It's been the best foldable I've ever used. Better charging speeds, better camera, better crease, mute switch, small (but useable) outer display, smooth animations, amazing speakers and better multitasking features. I've used the Z Fold 4 & 5, Pixel Fold a and Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Open still reigns supreme. I cannot wait for the 2nd iteration.
Me too! If OnePlus would just improve on their support and more consistent software updates/improvements, then they could dominate.
If only they could match the Chinese manufacturers and delivery fast wireless charging and pen support.
They are a Chinese manufacturer 🤦@@yashuady7803
Small outer display?
@@troydyall6624 Meaning it's perfectly capable of being a one handed device when closed. Easier to hold than either Pixel Fold, but still provides a better experience than the Z Fold.
I am still daily driving my OnePlus Open, and it has held up exceptionally well. I love this device.
Hi, What is the likelihood of encountering dead pixels near the hinge, for daily use?
I've had mine for 8 months and it's been flawless. Easily one of the best phones I have ever owned, and I've owned a LOT.
I had the same bump but an inch down from the top of the hinge. It developed into a dead pixel of which then developed into a black line down the whole of the screen. I contacted oneplus care and it was dealt with and returned within 7 days here in the UK. They replaced the whole screen and a new battery was also fitted all free under warranty.
Fantastic to hear, too many companies these days ignoring warranty issues and leaving you dry.
I actually just bought mine in the recent Amazon sale for my work phone. Plan on using it caseless for as long as possible. So far, loving it. Does not feel like its lacking in any way whatsoever despite having a year plus old chipset.
As far as I'm concerned the 8gen2 is superior to the 8gen3
It's still one of the best foldables in my opinion, even compared to Samsung's and Google's latest offerings. I had a ripped pocket so mine fell through my short pants and hit the pavement. So there is some damage to the hinge side and cover but impressively no damage to the screens. The hinge also is still in perfect condition, none of the sounds or surface bumps that Shane's OPO is showing. What really keeps this phone going is the 16gb of RAM. There is just nothing that it can't keep up with. To me it's the only "no compromise" foldable as it's a true flagship in terms of specs and build quality.
Exactly. When Samsung first dropped the 1st gen Fold, I really saw it as a form factor that would be perfect for hyper power users.
Only for Samsung to just kind of, well, hang out doing minor things. While the other companies doing foldables are going full throttle on the concept. Like OnePlus actually having fantastic specs to not only run hard, but to sustain it as well.
As a possible warning, my Z Fold5 started making that same noise a while back. I thought that I had gotten some dirt or dust particles in the hinge because of the grinding sound. It turned out to be the screen protector starting to lift off the inside screen itself. Shortly after the sound started it also developed a small bump or bubble at the top of the screen. Over the next couple of months the bubble started getting larger as the screen protector was coming loose until it was a huge lifted crease straight down the middle that I had to push down and smooth out every time I opened the phone. Shortly after that it developed a large black dead pixel near the top where the crease had originally started. I'm thinking that some kind of particle got in under the protector and eventually damaged the screen. Still, if you are hearing that crackling, I would suggest you look into having the inner screen protector replaced immediately. In the end it will be a lot cheaper than replacing your screen.
ain't no way it's closing in on the first year already...
btw the only thing I really dislike on this phone is that any custom dp value in the dev settings gets reset every time you reboot the phone...
@@keith5790it's so maddening!
@@BigdoggAU ikr! I also forgot that you need to force 120hz through adb commands to get it working on most apps every reboot as well.
other than that it's great 👍
I pre-ordered mine and I still love it a year later. I sold my Pixel Fold and my S24 Ultra and kept this. Waiting for the OnePlus Open 2.
It's the only foldable that didn't make me regret buying a foldable. So much better than Samsung.
Until you have a bump on the inner screen. Then we’ll see
@Leitefsj lmao Samsung is famous for that and their customer support is a joke
I got my OnePlus Open because of you, it is the only phone I use and it is still amazing and working so fast.
Had mine for about 8 months. Tested the Pixel Fold 2 ( as I will always call it ) and apart from the pixel specific software I still think the OPO is a better device. Ideal world for me would be to mix and match some of the Pixel features and get them on the OPO. The hardware is still very very pretty. Yes the Hubble space telescope is pretty unusual. But then again so was no external camera on SD 1 and then the proportionally massive camera bump on the SD2. OPO just need to get their software team to keep up with the hardware team. As someone in Finland I keep getting Nokia vibes. Great HW let down by the devs.
What are your favourite Pixel features?
Thanks for the update
Yes I absolutely love my device. I have the exact same bump exact same location but only on the left side of the screen (not the right side like yours)
Not knowing the exact origin or the "prognosis", of that bump, I did go ahead and buy a monthly $18 protection plan through T-Mobile.
The two-year cost of that BYO phone protection plan is slightly greater than the two year protection plan that OnePlus was offering
. But I've also seen that OnePlus customer service has been iffy (whenever you select repair) but if you select replace as an option (if you ever need it) reports are that process may be better.
Nevertheless this is the best device I have ever owned from phones to laptops to iPads, the multitasking is amazing
Being able to clone apps if you need two instances at the same time is quite cool
And Shane thank you very much for your channel, you have taught me a lot about other options I didn't even know
If I have any trouble within the first year of the phone I think the T-Mobile warranty plan would still force me to go through OnePlus but nevertheless I still feel better having a protection plan.
i've been researching all the foldables available in the US and its truly a difficult decision because they ALL have some major compromise. The OPO seems the best but it does give me pause that it costs what it costs and has an old CPU. I'm thinking of picking one up if i can get it for $900, but I wish Oneplus would go ahead and tell us exactly when the OPO 2 is dropping.
You will never notice the "old" CPU.
It has 16gb ram. That's MORE important than using gen3 over gen 2. Unless you play high end games all the time.
Some of those hinge designs do employ brushes to self clean the hinge so that could be the sound you're hearing and that bump pushing up under the screen. I have been tempted twice to buy this phone when on sale but it's so close to the second gen getting released that i can't bring myself to follow through.
That would be my guess, but I don't know for certain they use those brushes.
I bought mine december 3rd 2023
I had a lot of good devices before (Iphones and Galaxys, flip and fold) but the One Plus Open has been the best phone ive ever had by far, and im waiting for the 2nd generation 🙏
I got mine on October 28th and aside from a month I sent it off to a friend to experience it, it's been in my pocket for most of that time. And in spite of the fact that I dropped it on concrete in the second week that I had it, it's still solid. No problems with either screen or hinge. And honestly I love it still. The only thing I don't particularly like is that OnePlus is a bit slow with the software updates. I don't mind that the security patches are not monthly, but it was a long wait for Android 14 and I expect I will be upgrading it to the OnePlus Open 2 before Android 15 rolls out 🤷
I won't say it's the best foldable but it's great and definitely the one I would recommend to anyone who wants to try a foldable for the first time.
Nice review and wrap up. The Open has been my daily for the better part of that year. Its been quite durable. I have found the camera to be solid recently discovering the Master mode for some astrophotography. If theres a consistent weakspot for me it is the software. Coming from Pixels I miss the reliable update schedule. I'd like to see some of those bugs fixed and more customization in the launcher home screen. When it comes time for the next phone it'll be hard not to look seriously at the Pixel Fold based on my experiences with the Open, my first foldable.
@@Maxx134a I do similar. I use very few of the OnePlus apps except some of the photo editing and the Launcher because it does the taskbar and has best integration for multitask. A feature I use a lot and I think is really underrated is floating windows.
Im like you got this on release and and it's been amazing. From the superb ultra fast charging to the fantastic build quality and almost no crease. The speakers are By far the best I've ever had on any device. By now my fold 4 had fell apart after not even a year and this isnt even close to that ending. I genuinely hope here in the uk the put this phone into their trade in program for the open 2 next year 👍
I've been eyeing foldables for a long time but I always saw compromises for such a price. OnePlus Open is the only one that doesn't compromise on any front. Yes the software is a little unpolished but that's just really a minor issue compared to the competition at the time.
I got the Apex Edition for £1249.... amazing phone. Can't wait for OP Open 2
Been daily driving this beast since a year..the best foldable phone i have ever used
No issues with hinges or repairs?
Those bumps have been the reason 2 of my pixel folds broke. Hope it manages to find its way out 4:26
I've had them come and go on my Pixel Fold a couple times, this one is here for the long haul lol.
Ok. So this review made me do the following. Check for that bump...I'm good. Bristling. A little. Nothing crazy. Goated cover display. I love the 9 pro fold's but the OG shows there's levels to this. Still the best speakers on a foldable. Still the best for artsy shots but the 9 pro fold puts up the best fight against it. Software. Goat for multitasking for me. In all honesty? All this review did is make me want to take my sim out of the 9 pro fold and back in the open for a few days but the pixels features have me stuck. Great work as always.
What are your favourite Pixel features?
@@TheColourfulKid call screen, hold for me, now playing, voice dictation...I could go on. Pixel's features work best especially for my job.
Do you recommend to wait for oneplus open 2? Maybe oneplus open is so much cheaper now
man you make great content. Thank you!
Appreciate it!
I remember last prime day deal you posted a story of, influenced me to take the leap and just purchase the device because i know i will love it. There wil always be questions. To be honest, its the best phone, especially in architecture snd other similar fields
The bump and the sound you hear when closing are dirt particles stuck in the hinge , problem with folds very tiny particles in your pocket would get a way into the hinge
Loving this phone, just very nervous about the complete lack of dust protection and only IPX4 for water protection. So much do that I have bought another phone for when I'm outdoors (hiking, fishing, boating, etc).
Even Samsung Knights can't wait for OnePlus Open 2 to come out. Forget the original version let's start a countdown for Open 2 😂
i belive i got my oneplus a little after I saw it on one of your postd ,ya about a year ago. I love it so much i just boucht there oneplus Pad. Now i have had ipads, android pad and still do, but I have to say this oad it absolutely killer beats All the others out there right now. And you can use your phone from your pad if you want to.
Great review as always, ive had mine since last October, no issues at all. Can't wait until the open2, hopefully OnePlus gives some good trade-in prices
I still have mine, great device. The only thing i miss from my z fold 4 is the dex mode!
That brizzling sound is glue what you hearing.
Maybe due to heat the glue became warm and
got loosen a bit and you may have dropped phone.
To get that crease bump don't let water catch on it..
Looking forward to getting the OP open 2 but still hesitant of foldable's durability.
I’m waiting for the Open 2 at this point. Can’t wait.
On the launcher app drawer in pretty sure the letters are not there for you to touch and expect it to navigate to, if anything it’s just so you can hold down with one finger and slide very quickly to any letter.
I got this phone a few weeks ago and it's awesome.
Your little bump...your phone got pregnant
Great video. He has nailed the ability to talk about phones everyday.
yesterday i also noticed a little bump in almost the same spot at you have there, a little bit more to the center. Today the right side of the display failed. There is a big white line that goes from where the bump is to the end of the display. Its maybe 4mm thick or something. Huge bummer! I really hope they have improved the durability of the display on the open 2. If they havent, that is a huge concern
I’ve had this happen 3 days ago. The screen didn’t have a bump. But opened it on Wednesday and the screen was raised at the bottom and had a white line where it was on the right side. I’m not sure if oneplus will repair this. But I’m going to send it in.
@NLOApex such a bummer! Good luck with that . Also sending mine in.
Is it possible to use screen protectors for the inside portion? I guess the two pieces would need a small gap between them?
I had sold mine when i got my 9 fold pro but i miss it. Been thinking about picking it up again until the one comes out
I had a bump under my screen for a couple weeks towards the top and it went one day, I think it is debris that weaseled it's way in. That was about 2 months ago and I haven't had any issues with the hinge or screen at all afterwards.
Shane what screen protector did you use?
It was one I found on Amazon, but unfortunately it's no longer available. I forget the brand off hand.
Nova Launcher BETA might eventually fix the Experimental Desktop Mode bug (clears out your home screen of all apps, each time you use it)... There are other launchers, but gotta say, none are as smooth as stock, for me...
I get serious screen refresh rate issues on the cover screen on most apps but nothing on the main display when open? Also don't get notifications in drawer when locked! So many bugs!
14:39 i was beginning to think that I was the only one who noticed this bug. It has been present ever since oxygenOS 13.1, but hey, I think the stable build of oxygenOS 15 is out now… If you would be so kind as to say whether or not this issue has been fixed? Please? it’s very important to me
OnePlus has a good coupon right now. Couldn't help myself. Have some extra money so I grabbed one. Can't wait for it to get here.
Hey so I'm planning on buying the OnePlus Open 2 once it comes out. Do you think it would be able to survive for at least 3 years with daily use?
Anyone else having issues with there OnePlus open being sluggish and having RUclips glitching issue after doing the September update? When ever it does this I have to turn the phone off then back on then it seems to fix the issue for a few hours into it starts acting up again! I'm really regretting doing this most recent update for September.
yes ive had the same issue pop up today, youtube UI gets buggy/choppy and sometimes videos will freeze. hopefully this gets fixed ASAP as i use youtube on my phone a lot
Yes. I fixed it by side loading a specific set edit app and setting the fps to 120. The solution is on reddit. Hasn't happened since I did that
@@rayl9607 thank you, I'm gonna give this a try!
I'm thinking of picking this foldable up with the current price deal
That bump and that opening sound is 100% cause for alarm! My Google pixel fold had a similar bump on the very top and then it turned into a dead pixel then a white line and then eventually the whole screen broke on the inside. I've had my Google pixel phone for one year and 3 months before the inner screen died. What it seems to be is wear and tear of one of the hinges that are protruding too far up and will eventually break the screen. Unfortunately it sounds like that phone is on its last legs.
Also most camera issues are related to applications themselves switching out your camera application can do wonders sometimes Wonders
The sound has been present on virtually every foldable I've used, eventually. Likely just the brushes. Like I said, I've also had bumps like this come and go, I assume debris coming and going lol. Some luck there. I did find an image of the bump back from May, so it's been there a while now.
@scaryifliteral I couldn't pinpoint exactly what was the death of my Google Pixel Fold as I literally baby that thing and it's never been dropped, not even once, and it has a case on it. But the only thing I do know is that exactly where that bump appeared is exactly what turned into a dead pixel, so on and so forth. My replacement Pixel doesn't make any noise with the hinge so far, but obviously because it's brand new. I thought it was just growing pains with Google seeing how it's their first foldable that's why I decided to check out this video to see how other foldables are doing one year later.
I still want Microsoft launcher to emulate the Surface Duo UI
Just about a year for mine also. So glad for my investment. Thanks for the update.😊
Surprised you had any downsides to the camera, this thing never misses for me. Have never used action mode, standard photos "pop" more and dont really have an issue with blurry pictures.. the OIS on the 3x is particularly insane!! Main pixel stacked lens does WONDERS for macro shots.
Motion blur is by far my biggest issue. Shots like what I showed pretty regularly lol
@@shanecraigtech I guess my photography doesn't really involve a ton of motion, mostly just scenery and macros. Even whilst driving heavy equipment in construction I'm able to get a focused shot 2/3 times. I guess some steadiness goes a LONG way for all the lenses on this phone. Though I'm not really snapping pictures quickly, I always frame and focus
I have the same bristly sound too but less than yours on my oppo find N2 fold
And it's kinda terrifying the moment I heard yours
Let's not forget that a one year old phone is still competing with the latest and greatest others. Shout out to OnePlus!
The issues you describe would be a deal-breaker for me. At that price it should be absolute perfection for its entire lifespan.
You forgot the 4-finger swipe for multitasking fullscreen again lmao
I wasn't doing a super in depth demo of the multitasking. Just broad strokes. Didn't talk about floating windows at all, just wasn't the focus of the video.
Is do not disturb still broken?
Once they can nail dex implementation...it becomes by far the best
I'm tempted to get the Open or even wait for the Open 2 but still worried about fold phone durability in long term
Wait for the OPO 2. Foldable durability will always be an issue unless some company manages to make an inner display made of glass as strong as the main display. All the OPO 2 needs is better water resistance and better service support.
@@TheVision2 small update I've decided to go for the OP13, after weeks of research I kept seeing negative reviews of fold phone in general
I’m looking to purchase a foldable in the next month or so. Trade in deals on a new Z Fold 6 put it and a used Open in similar price range for me. Which would you choose?
I've had both... OnePlus is much better. Better form factor and better cameras. Charging speeds are crazy good as well
I like my oneplus open until this week. I flipped the phone open to watch a youtube video and the screen has broken. No I didn't drop it and have no idea how it happened. Submitted for a warranty on Monday and its still pending doubt it will be covered time to start shopping for a new phone.
Sad Days
I actually love all your screen wallpapers
I make them with Pixel Studio 😂
Android 15 coming to OnePlus on October 24th! Hope the Open gets it right away.
Hi, great video! Would you buy this phone a year later? I'm considering trading my S24U if OnePlus has a good black Friday deal on the OnePlus Open.
I would take the Open over the S24 Ultra.
It's the best phone ever, the feel of materials, speed, touch, everything is perfect
I am sorry, even tho i would love to test a OnePlus Open,i won't do it,because in my country the fold6 that i bought is now around 1100 or 1200$ while the OnePlus Open sells for around 1800 or 1900$.I literally have no idea why that is,but it is just the way it is
I didn't know where to share this, but I had my Open on my push golf cart at the golf course. The phone was closed with the outer screen exposed as it was in the cell phone slot facing me as I push the cart
Well, I went a little away from my push cart to work on some chipping and pitching shots. Unfortunately one of my shots got away from me and darn it can you believe it? The ball shot right at my phone and struck the outer screen
The outer screen OEM factory screen plastic protector had already been replaced with the dBrand (branded) glass protector.
Thank goodness dBrand was there instead, because their protector took the shot and cracked
but the native underneath OnePlus screen is A okay
I wish we got #2 This year 😭
Same here
After so long still no 5 icon per roll?
I am having problems keeping my separate apps and folders on my home screen. It's happened about a half dozen times now. I set everything up then they all get wiped out and I have to go back into my app draw and start all over again.😭 Any ideas of why this is happening? Thanks
A couple of things i don't like are if you wake the screen, sometimes it shows notification bubbles and other times will show no notifications yet they are there. Another issue i have with it is the depth of field from the camera. Trying to take a selfie with my wife and it focuses on one or the other. Tried to take a pic with a building i wanted in the shot and it blurred out. If anyone has any tips to resolve these i would appreciate it.
Mine got the inner screen bleed. Now im rocking the P9PF
still using mine, best foldable there is possibly except honor magic v3
That bump killed my fold 5.
Is there any clipboard on one+ open keyboard ?
It uses gboard, so yes.
Hey brotha. I want the one plus open cuz my fold 3 is glitching. Cant use my inner display after the update to 6.1.1. Im ready to get this and ditch Samsung
I cannot wait forthe OnePlus open 2
Ciekawa i konkretna recenzja pięknego smartfona OnePlus Open.
I was just buying this one and saw reviews on Amazon the folding screen got damage ... That is true ?
Are you asking me if it's true that someone damaged their phone?
After a year the inside screen got damaged, and I got a replacement in 5 days 😇❤️. It started with the same bump, and I pressed it 💩dead pixel! Haha
As much as I like my 9 Pro Fold, I sometimes wish I got this instead.
I love my Open. The only issue I have is that my home screens keep getting deleted. Anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Never had mine ever be deleted but have had my icons and widgets move around, my fix was to lock the desktop.
After iPhone 13 pro max, razor 2024, iPhone 16 pro max, I always go back to OnePlus open.
I just bought one.. Great prime day deal.. Works great and very zippy
One plus open feels like an unrefined foldable. Altho its great its the little things that would bother me like the way it doesn't fold open for 180° the software being half and half, the optimisation of apps etc etc
That weird sound even I am getting. It's like as if some dirt / sand got stuck or what. It's not making the phone dysfunctional or anything, just extremely irritating.
Pretty much the only thing that's kept me from trying this phone is that I used a OP 12 for a couple months and mostly hated Oxygen OS. It was really just a handful of little annoyances that gradually started adding up over time, and eventually I couldn't wait to get rid of it. The hardware of the Open is so good, but I don't understand why ColorOS / OxygenOS has to make so many arbitrary little changes for the worse to the way Android works.
@@Maxx134a the "issues" I'm talking about aren't bugs and glitches. There are things I just don't like about the design of OxygenOS. A big one is that any media you're playing becomes a quick settings tile instead of a swipeable notification like in other builds of Android. Another is the lack of autobrightness on the always-on display, or how the always-on display turns off in the dark after a few minutes and you have to tap the screen and get it back (both of which make it basically unusable to me as a bedside alarm clock), and just the overall design of the quick toggles in general. Most people wouldn't even care about any of that, but I was annoyed enough after a couple months that I just wanted to be done with the phone. Give me OP Open hardware with OneUI and I'll buy it on day 1.
That camera bump is hideous and its also a deal breaker when it comes to comfort for me. I knew it was a terrible design but I tried the xiaomi 14 ultra and it has same exact camera bump and ya its terrible for comfortability and just overall feel. Theres no real way to hold these phones with a firm grip without feeling the huge camera bumps.
Id just stick with google or samsung if you are like me.
My pixel 9 pro fold has that bump in the middle of screen like that
Watching in my one plus open
dude I regret buying pixel fold when it came out
And as an important little note for all you that have the OnePlus Open phone. And id you are also a member of there OnePlus Open 1 ,this is where saw the add anyway.... There is goine to be grand preview of The oxygen OS 15 and they will also show all the new devices that run on it.
On the 25 th of 😅october
The new software update has made floating window of WhatsApp awful, you can't type in floating window
Are Samsung and Google the last brands that refuse to copy iOS's quick panel and audio/brightness sliders? I hate how it looks and how impractical it is to me as left handed. Give me the sliders at the bottom, not top right corner of an already giant display!
