  • TaNeel Filesteel, a Tribal Prosecutor for the Fort Belknap Tribal Government, asks us to challenge the definition and practice of American justice within our tribal criminal justice systems. She weaves poetry and storytelling into a powerful talk on healing inter-generational trauma, strengthening tribal sovereignty, and the transformation of education within Indian Country. TaNeel Filesteel is a citizen of the Aaniih and Nakoda Tribes of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation and Apsaalooke of the Crow Nation in Montana. TaNeel is a student at Salish Kootenai College majoring in Tribal Governance and Administration and has garnered an impressive list of accomplishments and attributes her early success to her family’s dedication to education and cultural value. In 2017, Filesteel was appointed to serve as the Deputy Prosecutor for the Fort Belknap Tribal Government, a position she continues to occupy until she attends Law School in the fall of 2020. She recently worked as the Regional Organizing Coordinator for the Montana Democratic Party, where she organized the Native Vote on the Fort Belknap and Flathead Reservations in the 2018 mid-term election cycle. Filesteel has learned many valuable lessons throughout her vast experiences and hopes to reform the tribal criminal justice system as an attorney. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    What an incredible speaker! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Your truth is clearly there for all to see. I remember back in 1993 I stumbled on a book called In the Spirit of Crazy Horse by Peter Matthiessen in an Alberta book shop. As i had an affinity with the native American culture I decided to buy it. When I read about the crimes being carried out against the beautiful people I was truly moved to tears on many occasions. The FBI were criminals who had declared war against the American Indian Movement. I feel your pain but 2022 will be the year where you feel the fruits of your efforts begin to materialise. God bless the native people and God bless humanity. We are all one.

    I do disagree that human trafficking is only a colonization issue. My dad has told me stories about his tribe being known for stealing women and horses before the European colonizers.

      Horses did not exist in the Americas before European arrival, at least not the kind we know today and not for millions of years. Also, that's not the same thing as Human Trafficking. Was it kidnapping? Yes. Trafficking? No.

    • @oakmaiden2133
      @oakmaiden2133 14 дней назад

      Trafficking is worldwide and has been happening since the first caveman clubbed a female and dragged her home. Children are bought and sold every day every where. Illegal adoption and abandonment. Socioeconomics playing a role.

    Idk why but her whole presence feels disingenuous and forced to try and get a point across. I believe tribals should just be left alone and when they ask for help then give them help. If you really care about tribalism stop wasting your time on tedtalks and get our and meet us.

    What has she actually accomplished though? Other than just promoting herself and bullying students at Salish Kootenai College? Shameful.
    There is a reason why she isn't well-respected in the community, but outsiders keep conveniently overlooking that because of how she markets herself.

      @@LitaMendoza07 By speaking my truth and not contributing to erasure of actual activists and advocates within the community. Part of the problem with our communities is that we don't want to hold our own accountable, despite the fact they are committing injustice and in her specific case, outright anti-Indigenous harassment, erasure, and misrepresentation. It's one thing to be proud of the culture, it's a whole different thing to give people a pass for problematic behavior. Check yourself first before spewing some ridiculous anti-Indigenous sentiment.
