  • In today’s episode, we head back for some $1/3 NL Hold’em action at The Lodge in Austin, TX. We get seated at a $1/2 table for about an hour, building up our stack a bit before moving to our game of choice. We get a mad rush of cards, and eventually run into an interesting spot where we try to pick off a bluff with nothing but a pair of deuces in a $1.5K pot! Are we making the right call??

Thought the hand was odd. My honest feelings watching it was that he was either holding pocket Aces, double blocking the wheel. Or had AK and was blasting off hoping to force a fold from you. Ballsy call on your part, but the right call in the end! You are doing a great job with the videos. Keep em coming.

I like the call. Was expecting to see something like 55 where he turned his hand into a bluff.
I agree the 4 on the river makes it easier to make the call for sure though. Changes the nuts on the river, reduces his combos of trips, and when he hets that big he polarizes the hell out of himself. Still a ballsy call, but I like it a lot.

I think that last hand is more about knowing the player. Any small/medium pocket pair (5s to 8s) by a LAG could be played that way. Good call. I probably would not have committed all that considering there were more hands that beat you than bluffs on that board. But you made the right read and call so good for you.

A2s hand: Pre - good raise. I expect villain to have middle connectors, pairs 22-77 (maybe 88), all suited combos except 72s and A-Js+ and KJs+, A2o-AJo, K8o+, Q8o+, J9o+, T9o, T8o, 98o, 97o, 87o, 86o, 76o, 65o, 54o. Otf - most of villain's range has draws here. Offsuit cards higher than 6x (with no draws or made pairs) are gone except Ax, maybe Kx. When villain raises, I assume he has a pocket pair, paired the board (and doesn't want to allow overcards to draw), or a straight draw or bdfd. Calling is the only option here. Can't fold for such a small price. When villain bets large ott, he's either got a set, a straight, or nothing. The Q did not help any of the draws, so I lean toward nothing here. The 4 on the river improved villain's flop top pair hands, but I doubt villain continues betting large ott with those hands after the flop bet-raise-call. I sigh call here.
Great call on your part. Only a few good hands really made sense - either 65 or A5, 33, or 22. A6 is a really good bluff here because it blocks both straights.

    • @HuggiePoker

I've only played in 3 rooms in Texas so far, and they're all in the Austin area: TCH North Austin, The Lodge, and 52 Social. I like The Lodge the most simply because it has the most players and the best lighting. The other two are both nice rooms, but I'd like to see more players at both. (52 Social just opened recently, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it get a bigger player base over time.) Gotta bet the QTs. AND the J5s. When the previous round checks through, don't assume someone will bet for you. Bet something small, hoping for a raise (with the flush). Bet larger on a middling flop (T8s). Anyone could have a pair or draw that wants to see another card. What's the rationale behind betting bigger with top pair if you think villain probably "has air and can't call much" (AJo)? Shouldn't you be min betting or checking to get him to bluff?

On the last hand I probably would have folded. You raised pretty big preflop, so I'm not expecting your opponents to call with complete garbage. I'd expect suited connectors, pairs, and broadway cards, with maybe something like A5s. You led out on the flop and got raised on a rainbow board. Raising a made hand makes no sense here (but people do dumb stuff), and it's skittles so he probably doesn't have a flush draw either. Maybe the raiser had called preflop with 45s but more likely a medium or low pocket pair. Raising this size with an over pair or even a set actually does make sense. I probably would have called the raise, but when he bet fairly big on the turn I would have been done with the hand. If I did happen to make it to the river then I'd be a bit more suspicious of his all-in bet. He's repping a boat or quads, and I'm not so sure I believe him at this point. He could could certainly have it, but it just looks like he's trying to push you off the hand now. So I'd probably call the river if I got there, but I probably would have never got there. Upon seeing that my opponent had A6o then I'd know he is a knucklehead, but I'd rather be sitting to his left.

Yeah, I think it's probably hard to put him on a hand if you've not played with him before. Having sat with this guy a few times definitely put more bluffs & semi-bluffs into his range for me.

Not gonna lie, that seems like a lot of risk to catch a bluff. Yeah, you won, but he could have easily had 44-88, A5, A4, A3, A2 as well. I would have led, then folded to the check raise. Way to keep live poker alive though!

Yeah, it's possible he could have had those hands, but I just didn't feel like any of those hands coincide with the action across all streets. Maybe he could have done it with A5, but I would have expected him to call flop and raise turn more likely with that hand.

@@HuggiePoker you do you....and obviously you were correct. Be wary though, calling down like this can get expensive long run.

For sure, it's not something I do regularly.

Calling with A2 was really good as the villains line made no sense. Great call. If they really had a good hand, they would be betting smaller to keep you in. Not much logic in this person's play.

Thanks! I've definitely seen this player make aggressive moves, and I wouldn't have been surprised for him to have a hand like 54 on the flop. But the continued aggression just didn't make sense as the board played out, unless he was bluffing w/ a hand holding a Q that saw a lucky turn. I still might expect that to slow down on the river though.

A2s hand. Didn’t like it. Way overvalued your hand. But who can argue with success?

Yeah, fair enough. I think it's either a bluff or essentially the nuts, and I could have been paying him off when he's got the nuts there as well.
