For all it's bleakness I really love the Fire Punch has Togata whip up an afterlife on the spot to comfort Agni and from then on it's treated as main conception f the afterlife and treated with unflinching sincerity. Fujimoto has a bunch of criticisms of religion as a means of control but seems to understand the benefits of the comforting parts that make existence less scary.

Back again with another comment. Idk much about Fujimoto’s background, and this might be just another coincidence, but now that I think more about it “Fire Punch” reminds me so much of the Buddha’s “Fire Sermon”:
(…) “The ear is burning, sounds are burning...
The nose is burning, odors are burning...
The tongue is burning, flavors are burning...
The body is burning, tangibles are burning...
The mind is burning, ideas are burning, mind-consciousness is burning, mind-contact is burning, also whatever is felt as pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant that arises with mind-contact for its indispensable condition, that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hate, with the fire of delusion. I say it is burning with birth, aging and death, with sorrows, with lamentations, with pains, with griefs, with despairs.” (…)
“Fire Punch” was a fucking wild ride: edgy at the start, an absolute spiral both downward and upward in the middle, before suddenly casting the spell of eternal bliss onto its characters and us readers in the end after what feels like an eternity. In a sense, I think Fire Punch was also about letting go, about moving on from grief, from hate, from trauma, from memory itself and from the cycle of life and death. Agni’s fire and Luna’s loneliness only ceased to exist when they find each other again, when two once more become one, the circle finally closes upon itself. Maybe that’s why the memories of Fire Punch lives on so vividly in its readers: by its own language and aesthetic it helps us reflecting upon the human conditions that we all go through, honestly.
"When he finds estrangement, passion fades out. With the fading of passion, he is liberated. When liberated, there is knowledge that he is liberated. He understands: 'Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived out, what can be done is done, of this there is no more beyond.”

idk I thought the dog scene was not that bad in the sense that it doesn't ruin the story cause it seems like its pointing out the fact that the guy is ok with zoophilia and pedophilia but not homosexuality and how bad things can get normalized while normal things can get demonized basically arbitrarily, but I would agree with people that say it's very edgy cause it very much is but if I were to play devils advocate then maybe starting with something very edgy can set the tone or something like that for the overall story, idk I don't think dog sex is that important to the story and probably could have been replaced with something else that says the same thing about the post-apocalyptic society if all the other things we saw already didn't, but tbh I still think it's funny to see that guy lose his shit because it's not underage zoophilia with a girl but with a boy.
I promise that I have other thoughts about Fire punch just the length of my comment about the dog sex scene concerns me and will probably concern you.
