Less than 24 hours until Limbus drops so I'm gonna write a new pinned to explain some stuff: 1) The video was done before any voiced trailers, so the genders I assigned to characters were guesswork and I missed some of them (notably Don) 2) The English and Japanese translators confirmed that "Ryoshu" is an alternative read of the Kanji used in "Yoshihide", so my theory there was completely off the mark. See you on the road, fellow executive managers
Dostoevsky himself was famous for his gambling debts. There’s a story that when he finally paid off his gambling debt, the casino put up a sign saying “Dostoevsky finally paid off his debt!”. The slot machines may be a reference to this as well.
@LastMinuteEssays also thanks for the pronunciation warning, that Russian transcended Russian 😂 Good job on the research as well. Must’ve been hard reading through these pieces of literature
@PastelesdeMono yi sang (the sinner) although primarily based off the main character from the book "the wings", yi sang (sinner) is also based on much of the other books and even life story of yi sang (the author) id really recomend reading or listening to the wings, its only an hour long and very good in its own right. it mainly follows yi sang (or, "i", or the husband, or the unnamed protagonist) and his depressino aswell as his wife who was adapted as yeonsim/sang yi in limbus company.
The opening line for the stranger actually states “Mamam” which is French for mama or mummy, which indicates a closeness for his mother so he wasn’t exactly apathetic towards his mother just wasn’t mourning in the way everyone was expecting him to Also interesting note albert Camus also has another protagonist going by meursault in his first novella A Happy Death
"Maman" is the term, but yes, Maursault is a very well done character, who never fits in with the people around him, but largely in the """socially incompetent""" manner, and if he were more recognized today, would probably be shot with the "autismcoded" label
Rodion in Crime and Punishment: Man who suffers from mental laceration, selfcontradictions, guilt and realisation that he was "trembling creature" Rodion in Limbus: FUCKING MOUTH OF THIS CASINO
There's a few lines in the end of Chapter, something Sonya says along the lines of Rodya thinking she was special, a leader, while she was really not, that reminded me of how in the original game Rodyon initially thought himself a superior being, to then go down
@dreameater8548 That is because Sonia is reminiscent of Jesus Christ. She understands Raskolnikov and forgives him even though he killed Lizaveta, Sonia's friend. Sonia also wears a thorn crown of her own, a prostitute's I.D. to support her family even though her parents treat her poorly at best. She conversates with prisoners and is loved by every prisoner, except Raskolnikov. Raskolnikov treats her like crap and Sonia still visits him. Raskolnikov views her as a leader not of authority but communication and faith.
i't"s ceartinly fnnuy considering hints being everywhere, how it is, in fact logical, that although most of the female characters originated from male characters, it was intentionally made to split the group 6 to 6. I know the real reason Don Quixote is a woman, since she's not don quixote, yet the real don quixote was even further from the original than the girl so the point still stands
after playing the game, the game is great and since it's also available on Steam, i've been able to enjoy the game without worrying about my phone storage.
@brigittahegarini7162 you can go to settings, account and then merge code. you can enter the code on either side and then choose which account to keep.
Project Moon be like: "alright, dungeon crawler with gacha mechanics. Let's make the 12 main fighters all references to fine literary works from around the world, and make the POV and storyline an allegory to Dante's Inferno."
@Toshizora Roland and Orlando are both names used by the same character, he appears in multiple stories about Charlemagne's 12 paladins so yeah, he is based on Orlando Furioso and Orlando Innamorato
Wait a minute. I just realized. At 21:27 the order of characters is literally the order of Cantos. 1-7 is the exact same and is the lesson and character defining things from it. and the next tease is Hong Lu canto. So after Hong Lu is Ryoshu, Meursault, Outis, then Faust as the last. Wow
Catherine specifically didn't want to marry Heathcliff because they would be poor, so instead she married rich so she could support him financially. He failed to realize this, however, and ran away from Wuthering Heights, leaving her alone in an unhappy marriage. It should also be noted that Heathcliff was abused and exploited by Catherine's older brother, so he had good reasons to run away.
It's also interesting that Meursault seems to be from N corp's wing. N corp is a ruthlessly authoritarian corp even by the city's standards that manages its backstreets with taboo hunters (Like Vespa from the Distortion Detective), his detachment from societal norms and the people around him is probably going to play around the structure of N Corp's taboos. I think Outis might have been an officer during the smoke wars judging from their bloodied kopis and the smoke and depictions of warfare in the background along with the giant trojan horse made of corpses and Odysseus himself having been a king and commander of men in the Trojan war whose strategies led to the massacre and razing of Troy. It's interesting to see all the hints about the characters' personalities and their possible stories both in PM's universe and in the litterature they are inspired by.
I find it weird that people keep thinking that Taboos and Taboo hunters are exclusive to N Corp. It never specified that. It's implied multiple times that each District has its own Taboo, and then there are Taboo of the City in general
Don Quixote also uses a lance, and has Rocinante written on her shoes, AND her ego is "Blood of Sancho" when translated. So many good references. As well as speaking like Don Quixote
@silly_Lord_arbiter_zenah that would explain why people trust her and her knowledge regardless of her status and why her voice and speech is often flat
Also you can just barely see a burning wooden horse in Outis's background, so Im positive you're right on the money wrt it being a trojan war reference
There used to be a phrase within the character’s art. The Woman with the Axe was “If only she could have blamed herself, how happy she would have been!” It was removed for copyright reason iirc
Well constructed characters, well paced growth for each of the cast, -99.99% predictable, and the game is a rollercoaster for a mobile gacha game. Project Moon Approved, Suffering Guaranteed, Gacha is at the background, Difficulty Vertical, Framerate semi-nonexistent.
A thing about Dante's ego being his real name: A common motif in fiction infolving alternate identities and what not is of the 'mask' being the 'real' identity, and vice versa. It's especially common in superhero fiction- consider Rorshach screaming GIVE ME BACK MY FACE when his mask is removed- but shows up here and there elsewhere as well. Maybe something like that is going on here? He's the only character who's 'face' his hidden in the art, so that may be significant.
A little late to the party, but regardless; there's an extremely important Italian playwright and author called Luigi Pirandello, who wrote about masks and their place in social interactions. In the novel "Uno, nessuno e centomila" ( one, no one and one hundred thousand ) the theme was first introduced with the phrase "You'll learn at your expense, that in the long path of life you'll meet many masks and few faces." Another quote from the same novel is: " A reality doesn't exist and hasn't been given to us, we need to create it ourselves if we want to be: and it won't always be one for everyone, for ever, but continuously and infinitely mutable." The mentioned masks are fake, arbitrarily created versions of ourselves that take over in certain social spaces, such as work, family, friends and alone, with the theory behind them being : " Man ( as in human ) accepts the mask he himself put on or through which others tend to identify him." Dunno how it could be related to the character but when I read the comment I immediately thought of this guy, so it'll be interesting to see if there'll be any connections.
The main idea of the book? For me it's the fact while Don Quixote was a really smart man, while he talks like a normal person, you don't really feel any happiness in him, it's like he doesn't have emotions at all, however everything that happened with him while he was insane everything was filled with joy, even with all the violence, he remained happy. I don't really know tho, since I have read that book in russian language
18:54 We can see a letter N in the background, which might be hinting to N Corp. It was mentioned in Distortion Detective that N Corp's entire Nest is full of white buildings with no other color
@Deltabolster Well, actually, I also couldn't find the meaning of 'Ha Yuung(하융)'. But, according to my online dictionary, '하(Ha, 河)' means 'River'. On the other hand, there are some meanings on '융(Yuung, 戎), like weapon, war. But the most used meaning is babarian, like 서융(Seo Yuung, 西戎) meaning the babarians who lived on west side of the China. So, my best guess is that '하융(Ha Yuung, 河戎)' means -'babarians living near the liver' or 'war at the liver'.- Edit1: if 하융(Ha Yuung) is the name of limbus Yi-Sang's weapon, then 하융 would mean 'weapon of river' cuz there won't be any babarians in PM's universe. Edit2: thx to the Jone/Jane Doe, I managed to fix the misprint(용,Yong -> 융,Yuung)
9:05 이상(Yi sang, writer name) =kim hae gyeong(real name) 이상 'Yi sang' was originated by the way that Japanese people called him his name 'Yi sang' can seem like homonym, so project moon used some puns in his preview video (It has same sound and shape with word 'ideal' 'abnormal' 'over and out' 'as mentioned above')
You putting EMIYA's theme over Don Quixote made me remember a sick fan design for a Don Quixote Servant who was a Foreigner based around the ideas of being a All Might like super hero in form with 3 different looking NP's. Honestly, these characters look great and now I have some book recommendations I guess.
4:05 - He planned to give the money to the poor(or turn the world to the better in some other way), but after the deed he hid all the money under the rock.
Yeah, I remember him panicking and hiding the money. Rodion falls under 'the poor' and making the world better falls under the same umbrella as viewing himself as one of the greats. I didn't mean to imply Rodion did it all to have funds for hookers and blow or anything along those lines, but the material disparity between himself and the despicable old money lender felt like it was portrayed as one of the wrongs he saw the need of correcting. Granted, I was 17 when I read the book.
Little did they know making the characters based on book brainrottified every comment section talking a book in which a character limbus company is referencing filled with Limbus company reference comments.
Hey, Thank you for the very detail reviews of the books. For the Yi-sang's part, I guess this is not ha-young(하영) but 하융(ha-yoong) which is the pen name of Yi-sang as an illustrator. (So your explanation is right. it is one of his aliases. Though his real name is 김해경(Kim hae-gyeong: 金海卿), he has various pen names such as Yi-sang(which has many meanings such as strange(異常:이상), utopia(이상: 理想), over(이상: 以上), and etc. in Korean), bi-gu(비구: swallow), bo-san (보산: it has two meaning, one is the respectful expression for king's age, and the other means the part of the temple) and ha-yoong(하융). There is no such a word as 하융(ha yoong) but when interpreting each meaning of the character, it may mean 'weapon as ink' since 하(河: ha) means water which alludes to paint, ink, or such kinda things, and 융(戎: Yoong) means weapon. Just in case, (if you are interested) though it is a Korean webpage, but you can check images that Yi-sang had drawn as an illustrator from this page: m.dcinside.com/board/lobotomycorporation/771921
As most people know, Limbus turned out to be a free-to-play game with additional monetization. Project Moon claims they're trying to establish it as a long-spanning project that can fund a bunch of other games. With that said, they opened pre-registration (by which they apparently mean tallying up Twitter follows and YT subs and giving all players bonuses depending on which milestone is reached) limbuscompany.com/tripbooking/
There's a theory running around atm that all the Limbus people are vaugely connected to the Associations we have atm. the reasons are as follows: 1. A number of the Limbus cast have numbers on their jackets. This is relevant cuz the Associations are numbers and among the ones we know, they match, Faust has the No.2 on her jacket and wields a Zweihander, Hong Lu has the No. 6 on theirs and is using a Guan Dao like some fo the Liu use. and Ryoshu who is theorized to be No. 4 has a katana like the Shi. 2. Even more so than this look at the nationalities of the authors and the languages the Associations use. Yi Sang is based on The Wings which is a Korean book- with Hana being Korean for 1. Faust is No. 2 which is German, like Zwei. Don Quixote is No. 3 and is Spanish- Tres is 3 in Spanish, So on and so forth. All the currently known associations match the Limbus Cast in their position. Even Oufi Association, German-Swiss for 11, matches with Sinclair as the Author of Demian is German-Swiss. People filled in the blanks after Faust came out but put Heathcliff in no. 10 cuz that was what was missing. but it was a bit weird that the tenth Association was English again since Wuthering Heights is a British novel. that meant Seven and Ten association would be English. but with Dante revealed and his Jacket having the No.10 on it the list seems to be this: .) Yi Sang- Hana (Korean) 2.) Faust- Zwei (German) 3.) Don Quixote- Tres (Spanish) 4.) Ryoshu- Shi (Japanese) 5.) Meursault- Cinque (French) 6.) Hong Lu- Liu (Chinese) 7.) Ishmael- Seven (English) 8.) Gregor- Osm (Czech) 9.) Rodion- Deyvat (Russian) 10.) Dante- Deici (Italian) 11.) Sinclair- Oufi (German-Swiss) 12.) Outis- Dodeka (Greek) 13.)Heathcliff- Thirteen???? Of course this is just a theory, and Heathcliff being in 13 is kinda weird but again theory.
Ah, yeah, I'm aware. Faust's Zweihander was the biggest tell and the Ruina artbook did mention 12 associations. So I did put them in order in the thumbnail. Gregor and Heathcliff have no number and Sinclair got 181, so I put him down for 10 (1+8+1) and placed the other two randomly. Dante being 10 threw that arrangement into trash but he was a big surprise in general
@LastMinuteEssays Yeah, the main reason people knew where Sinclair was is because of the Oufi association being mentioned in Library. That did leave Gregor and Heathcliff being interchangeable but now Dante fills in the hole. And i maybe reading too much into this but, Heathcliff might now be alluding to the new Association mentioned in the original after credits scene. Since it isn't established yet it could connect to Heathcliff having no jacket at all. But that feels like grasping at straws.
Spoilers . . . . . . Remember that in the first update of the ending in Library of Ruina there was a afther credits scene in which the Purple tear talked with the representatives of the associations about creating a new organization to deal with the distortion cases, she also told them about the E.G.O technology of lobotomy corp, that scene was removed in other updates, i asume they will add later a 100% completion scene pointing to Limbus company
@LastMinuteEssays The wings is an amazing book, took me almost three weeks to finish a short book. Had to reread a couple of times. Sadly I dunno kr, I'm sure some of the meaning was lost in translation and I didn't get the full experience. :( Go read crime x punishment :)
Being on Canto 7 now, your description for characters is so good. Which lead us to how good PM made them. So canonical-lore-accurate, and yet no less interesting and intriguing.
Even back in the bible, True Names have had unknown and somewhat mysterious powers to them and isn't something to be disclosed. Hence why Jacob wrestled with God just to get a new name, because with that name comes many things including blessings. Also to be noted is that Abram also got the new name Abraham, which, along with those names came divine blessings so to speak. What is even more interesting is when Jacob asked of God's name, the answer was practically "You know better than to ask", considering this is in Genesis, yeah, True Names, or names in general, has always held something of value.
@Ultra_DuDu I mean, it was really funny, like there was no explanation as to why Jacob kinda just saw this random man and decided to Wrestle with him. It also says the man saw that he wasn't prevailing against Jacob, so he touched Jacobs "the hollow of his thigh" and it went out of joint, however Jacob still didn't let the man go before he got a blessing. My man Jacob the chad wrestled with an angel or an avatar of God the whole night(well technically it doesnt say exactly when it started but), and won despite the opposing team cheated. What a guy.
I approve of your Chinese! Theres just a stutter and it has been well pronouved rest of the way. As a note for the quote, the translation is correct. 美中不足 is correctly translated, "all is good if not for one thing that is not good" 好事多魔 does have some in's and outs. 魔 meaning demonic, but it also sound the same as 磨, which means grind. There is a saying that the first character was used in place of second one. Depends on which meaning you follow, either " road to happiness (好事) is drenched with demons(多魔)" or "road to happines(好事)s is drenched with trials (and requires grinding, 多磨)" Both of the characters really implies a sense of trials before the happiness, which probably is what its core meaning is. also character is 鸿璐 (Hong Lu), not the 红楼(Hong Lou)some people expected; since this one seems to draw a reference to Hong Lou Meng (红楼梦, an example of Chinese classic literature), and in Korean the pronunciation is roughly Hong Lu Mong.
@pomegranate10017 Really depends on who you would read it? wether the “中不足” (not enough in it) portion is an adjective to the "美"(Beauty) or the entire thing "美中不足" is an adjective to something else. In first case, that would and can be "there's not enough in beauty"; but no one AFAIK uses it in this context. The second case is more common, when we talk about something (say an object) is “美中不足” (All is good except for that tiny spec of blemish).
This is a month late but my guess on the first character we get is *the executive manager of the company.* Considering the themes of books, the executive manager could be the first playable character we get that's customizable as they represent the insertion of self: with the logical guess being Dante from Dante's Inferno considering how we're being guided by the equivalent of Virgil and that the managers face is hidden to symbolize the player being inserted into the story
this video with this comment section is a a hidden gem for me. i love all the informations and personal insight’s of everyone. it really helps with having a summary of some literature pieces that ive wanted to check out for a while, and the correlation with the Lobotomy corp/LoR/Limbus Company worldbuilding. Especially with the infos on the district's! btw your french prononciation of Marsault’s quote was accurate! same for the summary, ive read the book and your summary is perfect just keep in mind that in french, when you see an o with an u "ou" you’re supposed to prononce it "oo" (like the word "boom")!
Im willing to bet that when its outis time, they aren't odysseus but rather Hectors child Astyanax who in the Limbus universe survived and led a bloody revenge with innocents caught in the cross fire
Imma be honest, I read hell screen cuz I saw it was short, and maybe it’s cuz I skipped the opening talking about the setting, but this video is the first time it occurred to me that it was an unreliable narrator. I was so confused about “wait who was the person who attacked the daughter then?” because I thought the narrator was as clueless as I was. As soon as I hear about a young girl in an old horror story, I dread something happening to her because I know it’ll likely be brushed over. I was waiting to see whether the lord was predatory or not, so when the servant said “the lord liked her but not in a sexual way” I gladly accepted it cuz I was too desperate for an answer. In other words, I’m a buffoon 😭
This is rather late, but since there's a lot of your analyses of these characters that mention relation to the self, there is one interesting one I think with Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Though not from Heathcliff, it's About Heathcliff and from his love interest/adoptive sister, Cathy, and is perhaps one of her most famous monologues from the novel. "Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being." Within context, it's from Cathy ranting to the former nanny accompanying her when talking about her plans to marry the Linton heir in order to use the family's title and money to assist Heathcliff, since she and Heathcliff couldn't marry due to his low status within the family and lack of funds. Heathcliff and Cathy's relationship is remarkably codependent and toxic for various reasons, but what Cathy describes is the core of it more or less. Cathy and Heathcliff are two very volatile people who see themselves in each other. And growing up in isolation in many ways, they conflate their own sense of selves with one another. After believing he's lost Cathy to her marriage to the Lintons, Heathcliff goes off the deep end due to feeling thrown away by her, and this self destructive behavior seeking her continues after her death with the famous scene of him digging up her grave and later wanting to he buried with her. And in the text, it's also implied that the reason Cathy died after childbirth was because Heathcliff leaving and eventually marrying another woman threw her into such raving hysterics it became a major detriment to her health.
I... Literally only just noticed that Meursault is standing on the symbol for Nagul und Hammer. I'm calling it now- Raymond was/is a high ranking member (not Großhammer high but high) in N&H and got Meursault to kill whoever is the in game version of "The Arab"
The line for hong Lu if you want a more accurate translation would be the imperfection in beauty, good things are always tied with much more evil/faults
Watching this video only makes me want to play Limbus Company right now. Coincidentally, I've been interested to read some of these literatures far before I know LC
I only found this video now??? What the heck?! Anyways, as someone who is Chinese and trying to get back to my original roots since I'm very detached from it, I'm the most excited about Hong Lu in this video. So my notes here (from the future lol) will be all about Hong Lu as add-ons to your statement. EGO: Hong Lu's base EGO is translated to "Land of Illusion". This has been noted in the original source material (I only found a translation and I might try my best to find the original Chinese version to read), the Land of Illusion is the world where the incarnations of Baoyu, the protagonist, and Daiyu, the deuteragonist, came from. Buddhism: Buddhism is one of the main religions of China alongside a few such as Taoism and Confucianism, hence why there would be Buddhism elements in this. If anyone has read or watched Dream of the Red Chamber and has reached the end, you would know what happened to Baoyu and it is related to Buddhism beliefs. If there's anyone who wish to correct me or add to my notes, go ahead!
This was such an interesting video! I’m really wondering how much of each character’s story from literature they’re going to work into the game, or if the characters are just going to stay as generally inspired by their literature and then do their own thing. Also I feel like it just needs to be said: Ishmael has *amazing* hair.
She rocks it, for real I hope they keep the general theme but don't try to fit the mold too much, there's not much that can be done by repeating stories when they already played an open hand with what these stories are
@LastMinuteEssays Yeah that makes sense. Obviously I don’t know what the ending of Ruina is yet, but I’m assuming that it’s possible these characters could be created from books in the Library? So they have all the character motivations from their respective literature but transported to the “real world”?
@PlayheadNorth Probably not. Some names in Ruina will be familiar to those who know of Charlemagne’s knights. I won’t go in detail on it in case you aren’t at Impuritas Civitates
Gotta love how they did Canto 6, In the original story Heathcliff kills everyone, thought Limbus heathcliff didn't, they still found a way to implement it, let's say the mirror was used so i dont spoil people.
So i noticed something when rewatching this video the splash art of each character release follow which order they introduced themselves in game which spoilers: Follows the order which sinner the chapter will focus on so Yi sang next poggers
So Dante's power which bring back the sin back to life by rewind the time, is not really rewinding the time but goes to some kind of dimansion which shows a gate of hell in chanto 1 one and pull the hands there which assumingly as the sinner hand and revive them. Same as a novel of his finding his wife soul with verg to bring her back to life. Oh got it
Right as i heard madoka magica music my heart rate went up i love madoka magica and i watched around the time i started to play limbus so my memories for both are intertwined
I feel like Ishmael was previously known as Bebe from Wonderlab. Im not sure if it has anything to do with, but the part where she was the one to live and tell the tales kinda eludes to how she and couple of employees survived the downfall of Wonderlab Branch of L Corp 🤔
Looking back at this video after finishing all 5 Cantos and in the middle of Canto 6. It’s kind of insane how accurate you are in a LOT of stuff regarding the sinners.
I recognize that song you've got playing for Faust's section. A friend just introduced me to Madoka Majica. Yeah, I had a suspicion about that little cat thing.
holy BASED making the conscious decision to use growing wings for the yi sang part, I can definitely tell you're into some peak fiction sir. im so glad when i first heard fly my wings i also happened to think of growing wings, i wish i had found this vid sooner i LOVE LIMBUS COMPANYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Less than 24 hours until Limbus drops so I'm gonna write a new pinned to explain some stuff:
1) The video was done before any voiced trailers, so the genders I assigned to characters were guesswork and I missed some of them (notably Don)
2) The English and Japanese translators confirmed that "Ryoshu" is an alternative read of the Kanji used in "Yoshihide", so my theory there was completely off the mark.
See you on the road, fellow executive managers
It's limbin' time.
Good lock to you too sir, on the sinner's journey towards redemption
You would not imagine than Ryoshu is called also Yoshihide now
@MainstrangeOr should Carmen say…. it’s distorting time
YOSHIHIDE SPOTTED
Dostoevsky himself was famous for his gambling debts. There’s a story that when he finally paid off his gambling debt, the casino put up a sign saying “Dostoevsky finally paid off his debt!”. The slot machines may be a reference to this as well.
Oh fuck you're right, I completely forgot the debts were his main motivation for writing as frequently as he did
@LastMinuteEssays also thanks for the pronunciation warning, that Russian transcended Russian 😂 Good job on the research as well. Must’ve been hard reading through these pieces of literature
Wait, so this game take references from real life author too? Not just the book?
@7.adityachandra925cuz why not
@7.adityachandra925 Yi Sang will surprise you
Lmao, yi sang being hard to analyze even with 4th wall breaking details fits well with the character
@prozorozo you actually have to read 4 books just understand one story
@7Ge7รซ7 Im really curious about this, care to explain please?
@PastelesdeMono yi sang (the sinner) although primarily based off the main character from the book "the wings", yi sang (sinner) is also based on much of the other books and even life story of yi sang (the author)
id really recomend reading or listening to the wings, its only an hour long and very good in its own right. it mainly follows yi sang (or, "i", or the husband, or the unnamed protagonist) and his depressino aswell as his wife who was adapted as yeonsim/sang yi in limbus company.
@ceredicsharrineditslol2208 italian ahh depression 😭
Ishmael didn't even get to be a rabbit, she unironically was one of the forgotten branches of R Corp, lol. Bloody Reindeers
The sus noise she makes
THE RAVENS HAVE BEEN SUMMONED
The opening line for the stranger actually states “Mamam” which is French for mama or mummy, which indicates a closeness for his mother so he wasn’t exactly apathetic towards his mother just wasn’t mourning in the way everyone was expecting him to
Also interesting note albert Camus also has another protagonist going by meursault in his first novella A Happy Death
Oh, that's neat, I didn't know that. Thanks!
Yeah, it really bugs me when people misunderstand Mersault and say that he didn't care about his mother, since he clearly did.
@Toothflick You shouldn't; Meursault being misunderstood is also part of what makes him great.
"Maman" is the term, but yes, Maursault is a very well done character, who never fits in with the people around him, but largely in the """socially incompetent""" manner, and if he were more recognized today, would probably be shot with the "autismcoded" label
Same guy who wrote The Myth of Sisyphus
Rodion in Crime and Punishment: Man who suffers from mental laceration, selfcontradictions, guilt and realisation that he was "trembling creature"
Rodion in Limbus: FUCKING MOUTH OF THIS CASINO
It's certainly peculiar. We'll see how she develops.
Probably like "I'M GOING ALL IN! I'M SURE I'M NOT GOING TO REGRET THIS!"
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
"I regret it."
There's a few lines in the end of Chapter, something Sonya says along the lines of Rodya thinking she was special, a leader, while she was really not, that reminded me of how in the original game Rodyon initially thought himself a superior being, to then go down
Rodion in Limbus:
"Yobaniy rot etogo casino, blyat. Ti kto takoy, suka, chtob eto delat`?"
I still find it funny how so many people thought Don was a guy lol
i't"s ceartinly fnnuy considering hints being everywhere, how it is, in fact logical, that although most of the female characters originated from male characters, it was intentionally made to split the group 6 to 6. I know the real reason Don Quixote is a woman, since she's not don quixote, yet the real don quixote was even further from the original than the girl so the point still stands
i declare myself guilty 😓
@whenbettermatters i mean the themes of papa don and don quixote (the book one) do match up
@whenbettermatters funfact, "don" means "mister" in spanish!
@imbaconplate8872 I am one of those people
Project Moon really coming out here and making a mobile game worth playing. Absolute madmen
after playing the game, the game is great and since it's also available on Steam, i've been able to enjoy the game without worrying about my phone storage.
@RenShinomiya121 The only thing I hate is that I couldn't connect the one in my phone with Steam... **cry**
@brigittahegarini7162 you can
go to settings, account and then merge code. you can enter the code on either side and then choose which account to keep.
@RenShinomiya121 Pretty sure the option to merge code didn't exist on the phone last time I tried, but I will try again.
@brigittahegarini7162 It certainly does. I used an emulator and then changed to my steam account this week
Project Moon be like: "alright, dungeon crawler with gacha mechanics. Let's make the 12 main fighters all references to fine literary works from around the world, and make the POV and storyline an allegory to Dante's Inferno."
I mean, Roland and his story is based off a French epic poem called the Song of Roland, so it’s not entirely out of left field…
@apollyonnoctis1291 Isn’t Roland’s story based on Orlando Furioso?
@Toshizora Roland and Orlando are both names used by the same character, he appears in multiple stories about Charlemagne's 12 paladins so yeah, he is based on Orlando Furioso and Orlando Innamorato
And somehow post Canto 7 that’s the least insane thing about it considering La Creatura De La Manchaland
Don't forget sprinkles of vergillius' works of literature
"The Odyssey has a purpose"
@DenkiinArt haha just like the corn subreddit
@JeremyMRR555 bro 😭
Wow
OH MY GOSH YOU’RE RIGHT
He probably had a vision
Bro is the real all seeing eye
That's the order each character had in their introduction in the prologue, so that's probably why.
@i.did.not.eat.your.pixels "vision" -David Baszucki
Man
I really gotta read DD
I find it weird that people keep thinking that Taboos and Taboo hunters are exclusive to N Corp. It never specified that. It's implied multiple times that each District has its own Taboo, and then there are Taboo of the City in general
@roowdy-dude Yeah but the only wing from the book that was ever described as white and solemn is the N wing
You're right! He confirms it in Canto 3.
Holy shit that bullseye on the connection between Meursault and NCorp is incredible. This dude is fucking clairvoyant.
Don Quixote also uses a lance, and has Rocinante written on her shoes, AND her ego is "Blood of Sancho" when translated. So many good references. As well as speaking like Don Quixote
"My name... is Quixote"
I think its worth mentioning that Faust created the LC bus' engine, called Mephistosteles
Something doesn’t bode well for her future all things considered
So faust soul is trapped in Mephistopheles?
@silly_Lord_arbiter_zenah that would explain why people trust her and her knowledge regardless of her status and why her voice and speech is often flat
Also you can just barely see a burning wooden horse in Outis's background, so Im positive you're right on the money wrt it being a trojan war reference
There used to be a phrase within the character’s art. The Woman with the Axe was “If only she could have blamed herself, how happy she would have been!”
It was removed for copyright reason iirc
The translation of the Yi Sang's poem was not public domain and the translator made a fuss iirc so they cut it for all of them
@LastMinuteEssays a shame really. I would love to see what the other characters would be!
Also Albert Camus is famous by his other work: "Myth of Sisyphus" which is where the meme "One must imagine Sisyphus happy" came from.
I'd say his most famous work is The Plague, honestly
Fun fact: "durante" also means "during", fitting with the time/clock theme.
A little late to the party, but regardless;
there's an extremely important Italian playwright and author called Luigi Pirandello, who wrote about masks and their place in social interactions.
In the novel "Uno, nessuno e centomila" ( one, no one and one hundred thousand ) the theme was first introduced with the phrase "You'll learn at your expense, that in the long path of life you'll meet many masks and few faces."
Another quote from the same novel is: " A reality doesn't exist and hasn't been given to us, we need to create it ourselves if we want to be: and it won't always be one for everyone, for ever, but continuously and infinitely mutable."
The mentioned masks are fake, arbitrarily created versions of ourselves that take over in certain social spaces, such as work, family, friends and alone, with the theory behind them being : " Man ( as in human ) accepts the mask he himself put on or through which others tend to identify him."
Dunno how it could be related to the character but when I read the comment I immediately thought of this guy, so it'll be interesting to see if there'll be any connections.
Reminds me of the play from The King in Yellow in chapter 2 The Pallid Mask
Holy crap I just realized the bug lying on its bed meme comes from metamorphosis.
Can’t wait to find out what book Don Quixote could possibly be referencing. It still puzzles me..
I think its green eggs and ham
@SpanishTuna1 No, Sancho, I shall not taste thy Green Eggs and Ham! I dislike them, Sancho Doth Am!
@Hacivat-i6r Sancho, I have conceived an idea most ingenious! GREEN EGGS AND HAM!!
A small correction for the Rodion: "To split" would be "Расколоть", but "Раскол" is specifically a "split"(as a noun).
It's a really nice breakdown.
Ah, I see. Thanks.
As Ukranian, i can say this is true.
On Yi-Sang - Yes, 하융 was one of his aliases. Specifically, it was the alias he used for his illustration works.
Ah, I see. Thank you.
So, my best guess is that '하융(Ha Yuung, 河戎)' means -'babarians living near the liver' or 'war at the liver'.-
Edit1: if 하융(Ha Yuung) is the name of limbus Yi-Sang's weapon, then 하융 would mean 'weapon of river' cuz there won't be any babarians in PM's universe.
Edit2: thx to the Jone/Jane Doe, I managed to fix the misprint(용,Yong -> 융,Yuung)
I unpin your informative comment with a heavy heart cause news on the game dropped.
Thanks once again.
@goldindeepond7882 uh sorry for replying on a old comment but just wanted to tell you the spelling is not 하용 but 하융, pronounced as Ha-Yuung
@레베유 아니 첫댓은 제대로 썼는데 그다음이 오타네;;; 늦게라도 지적 ㄱㅅㄱㅅ
20:00 *Sis Puella Magica plays in the background*
Character: *Faust*
Clever, very clever…
Reawakened my ptsd
9:05
이상(Yi sang, writer name) =kim hae gyeong(real name)
이상 'Yi sang' was originated by the way that Japanese people called him
his name 'Yi sang' can seem like homonym, so project moon used some puns in his preview video
(It has same sound and shape with word 'ideal' 'abnormal' 'over and out' 'as mentioned above')
19:59 IS THAT SIS PUELLA MAGICA ON THE BG?!?
@LastMinuteEssays her situation pretty much turned out similar
13:40 Yeah... Just don't touch the shoes
Little did they know making the characters based on book brainrottified every comment section talking a book in which a character limbus company is referencing filled with Limbus company reference comments.
The madoka magica music during Fausts part got me lmao
Thank you for the clarification on it!
Also, the words meaning utopia probably is the “ideal” yi sang keeps talking about
I just realized that the shape of the shattered mirror worlds behind Yi Sang could be interpreted as wings
@RedWolf34ef He also wrote a poem titled "Mirror"
As most people know, Limbus turned out to be a free-to-play game with additional monetization. Project Moon claims they're trying to establish it as a long-spanning project that can fund a bunch of other games.
With that said, they opened pre-registration (by which they apparently mean tallying up Twitter follows and YT subs and giving all players bonuses depending on which milestone is reached)
limbuscompany.com/tripbooking/
There's a theory running around atm that all the Limbus people are vaugely connected to the Associations we have atm. the reasons are as follows:
10 cuz that was what was missing. but it was a bit weird that the tenth Association was English again since Wuthering Heights is a British novel. that meant Seven and Ten association would be English. but with Dante revealed and his Jacket having the No.10 on it the list seems to be this:
.) Yi Sang- Hana (Korean)
2.) Faust- Zwei (German)
3.) Don Quixote- Tres (Spanish)
4.) Ryoshu- Shi (Japanese)
5.) Meursault- Cinque (French)
6.) Hong Lu- Liu (Chinese)
7.) Ishmael- Seven (English)
8.) Gregor- Osm (Czech)
9.) Rodion- Deyvat (Russian)
10.) Dante- Deici (Italian)
11.) Sinclair- Oufi (German-Swiss)
12.) Outis- Dodeka (Greek)
13.)Heathcliff- Thirteen????
Of course this is just a theory, and Heathcliff being in 13 is kinda weird but again theory.
Ah, yeah, I'm aware. Faust's Zweihander was the biggest tell and the Ruina artbook did mention 12 associations. So I did put them in order in the thumbnail.
Gregor and Heathcliff have no number and Sinclair got 181, so I put him down for 10 (1+8+1) and placed the other two randomly. Dante being 10 threw that arrangement into trash but he was a big surprise in general
@siahianjay1138 It's less that and more he was suddenly revealed and patched a hole in the theory very neatly.
Spoilers

Remember that in the first update of the ending in Library of Ruina there was a afther credits scene in which the Purple tear talked with the representatives of the associations about creating a new organization to deal with the distortion cases, she also told them about the E.G.O technology of lobotomy corp, that scene was removed in other updates, i asume they will add later a 100% completion scene pointing to Limbus company
@siahianjay1138 Dante would be the new manganer, just like X in LC, i asume thats why he doesnt have a face
These characters alone made me want to read the classic literatures.
Man I need to read some books
They got me to read The Wings and Hell Screen, so same here
@LastMinuteEssays The wings is an amazing book, took me almost three weeks to finish a short book. Had to reread a couple of times. Sadly I dunno kr, I'm sure some of the meaning was lost in translation and I didn't get the full experience. :(
Go read crime x punishment :)
I have! Over 10 years ago, but it was my favourite obligatory reading in high school
It caused me to read some as well. It actually helped a lot understanding the theme of Gregor’s chapter.
I completed “the stranger” today, it was the best book I read in my whole life, please go read it if you can guys, it’s worth it
Being on Canto 7 now, your description for characters is so good. Which lead us to how good PM made them. So canonical-lore-accurate, and yet no less interesting and intriguing.
``oh so thats why why mersault background is fully white´´
``IS THAT FUCKING TENSION RISING FROM KINGDOM HEARTS?!?!?!´´
``HE SAID NOBODY?!?!!´´
This man deadass used EMIYA's Unlimited Blade Works theme for Don Quijote and the layers that choice has tickle my literary bone.
10:50 oh man. Hearing those words now...
When I read "wrestled with God" I imagines Jacob going WWE with God.
美中不足 is correctly translated, "all is good if not for one thing that is not good"
好事多魔 does have some in's and outs. 魔 meaning demonic, but it also sound the same as 磨, which means grind. There is a saying that the first character was used in place of second one. Depends on which meaning you follow, either " road to happiness (好事) is drenched with demons(多魔)" or "road to happines(好事)s is drenched with trials (and requires grinding, 多磨)"
Both of the characters really implies a sense of trials before the happiness, which probably is what its core meaning is.
also character is 鸿璐 (Hong Lu), not the 红楼(Hong Lou)some people expected; since this one seems to draw a reference to Hong Lou Meng (红楼梦, an example of Chinese classic literature), and in Korean the pronunciation is roughly Hong Lu Mong.
That's really informative, thank you!
"Road to happiness requires grinding"
So fitting for a mobile game, lmao
i see 美中不足 as "there is not enough in beauty", would that work too?
Coming back after canto 7 is crazy
Hehe, I knew what you were doing turning on the song “Sis Puella Magica”
ofc he plays Madoka magica ost on faust part, Walpurgisnacht is also a witch in the story
I gotta thank to my primary school teacher she made us read Don Quixote and Moby Dick.. Making us understand more abt LIMBUS COMPANYY
this video with this comment section is a a hidden gem for me. i love all the informations and personal insight’s of everyone. it really helps with having a summary of some literature pieces that ive wanted to check out for a while, and the correlation with the Lobotomy corp/LoR/Limbus Company worldbuilding. Especially with the infos on the district's!
btw your french prononciation of Marsault’s quote was accurate! same for the summary, ive read the book and your summary is perfect
just keep in mind that in french, when you see an o with an u "ou" you’re supposed to prononce it "oo" (like the word "boom")!
Project Moon is going to hold me at gunpoint and gently whisper commands at me to read literature, and I don't mind it at all.
LMAO you putting Shirou's theme in Don Quixote's section was so good
9:04 think this part references to "Sang Yi" a character Yi Sang met while looking through Yeonsim, his mirror technology
Realised
I was way too late
So in other words... This is like the Korean bungou stray dogs. I'll definitely be checking it out
This is rather late, but since there's a lot of your analyses of these characters that mention relation to the self, there is one interesting one I think with Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Though not from Heathcliff, it's About Heathcliff and from his love interest/adoptive sister, Cathy, and is perhaps one of her most famous monologues from the novel.
"Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being."
Within context, it's from Cathy ranting to the former nanny accompanying her when talking about her plans to marry the Linton heir in order to use the family's title and money to assist Heathcliff, since she and Heathcliff couldn't marry due to his low status within the family and lack of funds.
Using Madoka Magica OST for Faust is quite fitting since Madoka Magica also took inspiration from Faust (the literature)
I feel like Ryoshu is going to be the villian of their canto
I LOVE YOU PROJECT MOON PLEASE DONT STOP
fun fact: I think this is the order in which the cantos have gone so far.
Every once in a while I like to come and see how accurate you got with each analysis.
I... Literally only just noticed that Meursault is standing on the symbol for Nagul und Hammer. I'm calling it now- Raymond was/is a high ranking member (not Großhammer high but high) in N&H and got Meursault to kill whoever is the in game version of "The Arab"
I love that some people come here and tell some facts from their culture or writer's lives.
It's really appreciated and why accurate cultural representation is always neat
@LastMinuteEssays yeah. Just started game today asked myself a question about sinners' names. Thank you for your work. It was great
I just realized the character are ordered coincidentally just like the cantos
the most ancient limbus company video
The line for hong Lu if you want a more accurate translation would be the imperfection in beauty, good things are always tied with much more evil/faults
Watching this video only makes me want to play Limbus Company right now. Coincidentally, I've been interested to read some of these literatures far before I know LC
I love coming back to this video after a new canto is released just to read all the theories, what people got right, wrong, etc...
9:11
"Who am I? You're talking to yourself. You can call me Ishmael"
mgsv reference fr fr
Playing Growing Wings over Yi Sang's part was clever and unexpected, and it has aged like fine wine
God bless you Project Moon, I really love the deep story in this game, Cant wait to play this game soon 👀
Can't wait for the scene that Outis is forced to get in the water
>huh, I wonder why they're playing Tension Rising during Outis's part-
>"Nobody is trying to kill me!"
...You sly bastard
Sly fox
Waiting for Don's Traumatizing Chapter XD
Don's analysis being accompanied by Unlimited Blade Works is such big brain parallelism
This was such an interesting video! I’m really wondering how much of each character’s story from literature they’re going to work into the game, or if the characters are just going to stay as generally inspired by their literature and then do their own thing.
Also I feel like it just needs to be said: Ishmael has *amazing* hair.
She rocks it, for real
I hope they keep the general theme but don't try to fit the mold too much, there's not much that can be done by repeating stories when they already played an open hand with what these stories are
@LastMinuteEssays Yeah that makes sense.
Not giving everything outright away but if we take Roland's entire backstory into account than we can expect them to do the same with these characters
Probably needs lots of free haircut coupons to keep it like that
i dont find the language imitations too disrespectful or offensive, but absolutely hilarious
Gotta love how they did Canto 6, In the original story Heathcliff kills everyone, thought Limbus heathcliff didn't, they still found a way to implement it, let's say the mirror was used so i dont spoil people.
So i noticed something when rewatching this video the splash art of each character release follow which order they introduced themselves in game which spoilers:
Follows the order which sinner the chapter will focus on so Yi sang next poggers
interested to see what Mersault is cooking, being that far along into the story
So Dante's power which bring back the sin back to life by rewind the time, is not really rewinding the time but goes to some kind of dimansion which shows a gate of hell in chanto 1 one and pull the hands there which assumingly as the sinner hand and revive them.
Same as a novel of his finding his wife soul with verg to bring her back to life. Oh got it
inferno (dante) made some people got scared of going to hell after reading this book and so many people in that time go to the church.
Yi Sang’s actual name is Hae-gyeong, yes. And Hayung was one of many pen names he had including Yi Sang.
This video taught me that Faust and Madoka Magia have the same inspiration.
I gotta read Wonderlab once I'm done with LobCorp, that's for sure
@LastMinuteEssays The author of Wonderlab personally defied this theory. Ishmael is NOT Bebe- they are two different people.
@mttbrandcherry6338 OOF thats too bad X(
Looking back at this video after finishing all 5 Cantos and in the middle of Canto 6. It’s kind of insane how accurate you are in a LOT of stuff regarding the sinners.
outis shows up: *tension rising starts playing
I saw what you did
Maybe in the end they're books who came to life
This is very fun to watch w later knowledge
The phrase "an impossible dream" Are the last words of don Quijote in the second part of his story, and as a spanish i was surprised to say the least
I recognize that song you've got playing for Faust's section. A friend just introduced me to Madoka Majica. Yeah, I had a suspicion about that little cat thing.
Now it's time for me to pretend i'll read all of these books...
holy BASED making the conscious decision to use growing wings for the yi sang part, I can definitely tell you're into some peak fiction sir. im so glad when i first heard fly my wings i also happened to think of growing wings, i wish i had found this vid sooner i LOVE LIMBUS COMPANYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Holy shit the Utena soundtrack with Demian, there's no music more fitting
surely next time we will have some polish representation..
next time..
I’m kinda sad that project moon will never make a worm reference but let’s be real they won’t because they have no idea what worm is
10:40 i like how the quote is used in the end of the chapter
That and Erlking pleading to be haunted just to not be left alone were immaculate moments
I love your choice of BGM for each characters. I can really sense your love for games, animes, and movies.
