I am very appreciate for people like you who take time out of your day to explain things to a complete novice and someone you don't even know like myself. You also go out of your way to explain things in such a way that a child could understand. Thanks!
WONDERFUL EXPLANATION!!!! ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS I NEVER SAW BEFORE. I have been working as an electrician for 35 years, some people ask me if I know some of sprinklers systems, I didn't know that it was so easy. Today I did my home sprinklers system for the first time and your explanation was so accurate and clear. Now I have a couple of neighbors who want me to do the work of sprinklers. TANK YOU ..... BEST OF THE BEST.
Dude thank you so much! Im going to do this for my grandma, she’s old and can’t water her plants anymore. And I can brag to my friends about it in school!! 💪
Great video. Couple things to note in PVC. PVC is interference fit so after you apply cement be sure to hold the fittings on the pipe. What's actually happening is the PVC is melting together. Apply a liberal amount of cement to the pipe and then apply a thin layer of cement to the inside of the fittings. Awesome video!
6 years later - greetings from 2021 lol. I'm extending my irrigation system to the back yard and bought a cover box and 3 rain bird valves expecting to make a PVC manifold. Stumbled across this Orbit 3-valve manifold at Menards and it was a no brainer. It costs only a few $ more than buying 3 bare valves and you get all the PVC parts as well! Unions alone would add $20 to the price of this thing. Nice watch - thanks!
Excellent video. I love the thoroughness. Just what I needed. I’ve always heard to not use petroleum based lubricants like Vaseline on rubber o rings. Instead we should use a water soluble version like KY that doesn’t break down the rubber.
I'm in the process of having to upgrade my irrigation system and find your information very useful. Just an F.Y.I. , I would be cautious using petroleum products [Vaseline, etc] on rubber gaskets as tends to degrade the rubber. A silicone base grease might be more appropriate.
Great video! Orbit is the ONLY? sprinkler valve maker that provides a ready made manifold + Unions for easy removal all for $50 is an amazing bargain. A few suggestions - better not to cut the box on top of the manifold as it strains the white pvc joints a lot. Also, the waterproof grease is silicone based - I use a tube of Faucet and Valve grease with an acid brush with the bristles trimmed in half to apply it. Great on electrical connections and for lubing o-rings, and on screw heads and threads to block corrosion. Also, better to trim the hole for the pipe in the valve box extra wide - protects the pipes if the box ever needs to be pried out to repair or extend system. Good to take a magic marker and label pipes & valves AND (wires with tags - eve though color coded makes it easier to work on valves without referencing the chart back at the box). Ex Valve "A1" "A2" etc the draw an arrow with flow - "A1 IN" , "A1 OUT" etc. Sand all connections before gluing PVC & use less cement - it can drip in to the pipe on the inside also excess cement is supposed to be wiped off as it can weaken the pipe. Put bricks under the box to add more space under the valves - easier to remove / install new valve. More room to work. Put gravel around the side of the box about 3/4 to the top, then lay fabric on top and cover with mulch.
This video was extremely helpful. One of my valves was leaking (fixed for now) but I am considering replacing the entire valve system. Much easier than I thought. Thank you for the clear explanation.
Just need to see how to install the real backflow oreventer, tie in to the actual water supply and wire up a control box... Very helpful video. Thanks for uploading.
Great tutorial. I like the clean install of the valve unit and the plastic enclosure. I'll be building our yard irrigation from scratch later this summer, so this video was helpful. I'll probably make my hole and valve enclosure extra long to allow for future expansion of more valves/zones. Thanks for the tutorial.
It went in as cool as I thought from the online pics. This vid answered something that wasn't properly answered online specs I found, AC or DC.. Since it doesn't matter which wire you picked for common that sounds like AC . Good tutorial (I will be using the piece underneath with the cutouts already there...) Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for being so thorough. We just bought a house with a similar system but we don't understand anything since we are first time homeowners. We also know we have to repair the pipes through the system since some leak, cause puddles, some don't turn on, etc. Thank you for helping me understand what I have.
My new place had wire nuts outside the box with jell, and I wasn't sure if the box was some kind of control thing. This helped by showing it's nothing special.
Thank you so much for this very informative video! I am currently getting quotations for an automated irrigation system and I am getting astronomical figures!! Now I understand how it works and how inexpensive it actually is. This is FAB :)
Very nice. Thank you for sharing, questions: 1. How to avoid dirty water from backing into the main line? 2. How deep should the values be buried to avoid the water pipes from damage in winter freeze? 3. Do I need a drain valve somewhere?
You use a backflow preventer to block the water from coming back. (I have a video on that) How deep? I guess that depends on where you live but really it does not matter because you should be blowing out your lines ever fall so that freezing is not an issue. Never leave water in your pipes over the winter. Drain valves are great. They make a few different types. I would put it right in the box along with everything else. remember to put it in the lowest part of the pipe lines so that it can drain all the water.
Adam, thank you so much for a clearly worded, step by step video. I believe you just saved me $800. I'm going outside to figure out which is the "com" wire. That seems to be my only question at this point. Again, awesome video. New subscriber for all my DIY projects (dozens in quarantine! LOL)
A good rule of thumb is to make sure your poly line's rated 100psi or better. That said, I prefer poly for the outgoing zones, and hard pipe before the valves. The run through the vac-break is traditionally copper, as it's stronger and isn't affected by sunlight..
When i watch a video and the guy is the type a guy that i go through 8 employees to find...i just enjoyed watching good ole sprink work..thanks man....
Is there a maximum distance you should put your valve manifold from where the actual sprinkler heads will be? I have a huge back yard and my main comes in from the rear of my back yard, and I'm putting grass in my front yard. Curious as to where I should put the manifold. Thanks for any help.
This is extremely helpful! I totally feel like I can do this now. My only question is about the other end of that wire...does it have a plug 🔌 on the end? Does it go into a timer? Does it need to be hardwired in? (How do I do that?!) and does it need its own fuse? Thanks so much!
I have a Toro 212 control sprinkler system, it's been tested recently and working fine, this is a 15 year system. The system was opened this year and I cannot get a rise out of any of the heads. The backflow has been checked there is water pressure coming into the valve and out, but no water pressure at the manifold. I have no leak physical leaks and my water bill is normal. One suggesting is, my tree roots is squeezing the pvc pipe to the extend that there is reduced water pressure going to the manifold. I need help.
Ewing sells rainbird valves for $16. You can unscrew the bonnet and leave the body in place. Done in 4 min and the probability of a leak is approx. 60 percent less. FYI.... to cut and weld PVC takes an additional 6 min.
Thanks that was very helpful. To better understand the wiring. You have 3 stations. Each station goes for example, the first on trees, the second on flowers and the 3rd on vegetables? A 12 zone irrigation system can handle 12 stations?
Nice video..I have a question..when a solenoid goes bad.do you need to cut the water presure off? in order to replace it .or can you do it with the water pressure on??
I just had a guy come over to give me a bid on a three phase. The pipes are already there just need what you did and he wants almost 1000.00 so I figured I'd come in here and see if a little ole 67 widow can do this and I think I can ty
Can you tell me more about the wires? Does your existing wire always have 6 small wires as I saw on the video? Or different wires will have different number of wires inside? Why did you leave the yellow wire and the 2nd red wire out? Can I connect the other 3 wires freely or I have to do exactly what you did in the pictures? Can I use one of the two extra wires to connect instead? Do you need to build a fence with bricks to prevent the soil come inside the box and to prevent the box tilt to one side due to heavy rain with a lot of water?
I wonder the technique that your are doing and practical train that you want to create an Idea to others who do not know this like me. please go on! Thanks.
Question: I saw you turn the valve to get water in the system, so I do the same then turn the valve off? I am a bit confused as to how that is set up. I turned it on and like yours, it leaks a bit. I have my timer and I am going hook that up like you explained. Will the timer open the valve on its own (inside valve)?
My water supply line from house is 3/4 inch.. Should I just up it to 1 inch PVC , or should I just use a reduction coupling at the manifold and keep it at 3/4 instead of 1 inch all the way. What was your situation? Does your house main water supply is 1 inch, or you just coupled it from (1/2inch) or (3/4inch) to 1 inch? Also, can you share what kind of sprinklers do you have and how are they connected to the 3/4 pvc zone lines? How many per line did you use in your setup?
QQ: do you need to worry about this manifold being “at least 6 inches higher than the highest sprinkler”? I’m replacing an anti-syphon system that was above ground.
Quick question; I have about 20 drip emitters lines watering 20 plants on a valve zone; in four of them (emitters) the water keeps dripping does not stop with the timer in the garage. Unplugged the timer in the garage, did not help. All this happened this morning, yesterday everything was working fine. Any Ideas?
I am wanting to install a sprinkler system to my yard. What is that pipe that sticks out of the ground for? I noticed at the end of the video that you capped that pipe. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
Great vid, so I wanta do a drip system with this type of manifold, but some vids I watched. They include psi regulator, filter, vacumn . Breaker with timer installed at hose bib. With this manifold installation does it need all that?
do you know the name or part number for that little cable box "goopie" that is used to waterproof the cable ends? mine didn't come with one and looking to get one.
If you insert the clip into the bottom of the wire connector box the other way, it will sit on the pipe with the wires facing the correct direction instead of having the 90° bend.
The plastic box you refer to as the "plastic insert you can shove your wiring in there" -- does it have a technical name so I can search for one online? It did not come with my sprinkler valve system.
Thank you for showing the fact that you cut into the boxes omg I just bought one and was like well this is stupid you have to cut them end then I thought I did it wrong but I guess I didn’t fuck it up so that’s good
Where is the pump and where is the controller? I do have the water pipe on the side of the house, but dont have power there! Can Install pump 30 feet from the well?
Can you explain exactly where the white wire is installed. Also, can you explain the purpose in more detail what the pipe coming up from ground that's by itself is used for? I love the video.
Thank you for your video! I have a question I have the same system but I need to reduce the pressure on one for my shrubs how do I do this? The drip tips keep getting blown off due to the pressure
A very informative and interesting video, thanks for taking the time to make and upload!! Question - is it still doing good after this long time? Also, would it be ok to use ordinary garden hose instead of pvc? I have 3 long hoses which would be ideal to use if possible.
Hello friend. Helpful video. Question: Did the wire clip that you used at the end (with the goo inside to protect the wires) come with your manifold or did you purchase it separately? I bought a 4 valve manifold and had no such part. Do you know where I can get one? Thanks.

I almost never comment or leave reviews unless I’m very impressed. Thank you very informative! Exactly what I was looking for !
The best tutorial for this yet. Now you need to show how to run the wires inside your garage.

Did my install this past spring. Purchased two to make 6 zones and highly recommend.
Thanks for sharing. You have demystified the timer and automatic sprinkler system.
Good video! Very thorough but not exhaustingly exhaustive.
Thank you for this Adam! Did the install today and it came out A1.
Adam, i was exactly looking for this guidance. clear explanation. great work, thanks for the video
My new place had wire nuts outside the box with jell, and I wasn't sure if the box was some kind of control thing. This helped by showing it's nothing special.
Awesome video dude! Thank you for posting. I now have more confidence to compete this project
You did an awesome job explaining this install. Thank you.

use only silicone grease with any type of water fittings. other greases might damage the rubber seals and o rings.

Thank you Adam, I really appreciate your patience. This helps everybody to understand how this device can be used at home or at work.
All useful, no filler. Good video

Excellent video, clear and concise instructions, I currently have a manual system. I'm replacing and installing the orbiter 3 valve system.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have the confidence to replace my valves.
Yes, very helpful... Didn't use this kit, but it helped me with the wiring of my existing system.
Did u also leave the remaining 2 wires open like he did too?

WOW! Excellent video! I'm confident in my decision to replace my system now. THANK YOU!
Awesome video!! Thank you so much for a how to video on this sprinkler setup
I was strangling to installnit thank you i learn much from you
Excellent presentation. Nice work. A big thanks to you.
This was such a great video! Thank you! Would you be able to show what to do before the snowy winter season comes?
how do you drain water lines in fall would it be possible to add a air compressor valve te blow out the lines
Nice, thanks! I watched it from start to finish.
Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
Now if you have one on how to find the valve system, that would be super 🙂
😀The best video. The instruction is very clear. Thank you so much Adam
I have 3 stations and a 9 zone timer system I'm installing when wiring do I daisy chain or run each wire run to its own valve system.
Great video! I always shove it deep until it touches the back.
jlb197736 I use a 1lb deadblow hammer.

Oatey has a pvc primer/glue combo that works pretty well
It's super simple, barely an inconvenience!
This is extremely helpful! I totally feel like I can do this now. My only question is about the other end of that wire...does it have a plug 🔌 on the end? Does it go into a timer? Does it need to be hardwired in? (How do I do that?!) and does it need its own fuse?

Does it matter what end your intake is on? Does it have to stay on the end that it came on? Does it only flow one way?

Google those q.s....u will find the answers...
great tutorial Adam. The best, simple and to the point. Thank you
I let the mulch cover the lid then brush it out of the way if you need access and back when done. Looks better that way.
Don't use regular grease on an o-ring. The stuff they use on "scuba watches" is silicone grease.
It jacks up the rubber o ring petroleum products and rubber don't mix
Very nice atomic water sprinklers and 5 years ago this video upload 4k 👌🏻👍🏻
This is great, exactly what I was looking for.

Thank you for taking the time to share.
How can i know if i can add more zones to an existing 3 zone sprinkler syatem

I am wanting to install a sprinkler system to my yard. What is that pipe that sticks out of the ground for? I noticed at the end of the video that you capped that pipe. Thanks for the video, very helpful.

Very informative and straight forward. TYVM!!!!!!
How many sprinklers can you connect to each valve?
Thank you so much for your great video 👍👍👍
Thank you for your video! I have a question I have the same system but I need to reduce the pressure on one for my shrubs how do I do this? The drip tips keep getting blown off due to the pressure

Great video! Thanks. What Orbit box for cables connectors did you use on 14:30 min?
Hello Adam,
Once I turn the water on is linking water a bad thing? I noticed one of yours leaks but barely.
Very professional works
Great video. Good job
How has it held up? I haven't heard good things of the orbit manifold, but that is what I want to use since its easier to install.
Since installation I have needed to hand tighten one of the caps only once. That’s it. No issues.
Good vid. I showed the kids what our unit looked like after we watched this one together.
Hello friend. Helpful video. Question: Did the wire clip that you used at the end (with the goo inside to protect the wires) come with your manifold or did you purchase it separately? I bought a 4 valve manifold and had no such part. Do you know where I can get one?

Why did you not need a PVB ?
