@@zachwoolard3260 Do you know if any stores have any in stock still? I missed the boat on that one. However l have a feeling Jawbreaker Buzzz's would come out puddle top from the factory. If I'm right l would pass if that were true. Now the weird thing is l don't mind my Jawbreaker Zone's being puddle top, because l'm not looking for glide in a zone!
Even for more experienced players, the Mako3 is a great one round disc. So many options for shot shapes and its slow enough to be used decently as a putter.
the mako3 is probably my favorite disc. The fact that you can just pick a point 250 feet out and throw a laser beam straight at it is so valuable. It's also an awesome tool to check your form and is great if you're trying to get better. Everyone should have one.
That was exactly our thought process when recommending this disc. Many people will say it’s too understable or “finicky”, but that’s the point. When you form is on and you need to throw a laser beam, there really is no other disc. Great that you agree! 👌
@Jim John Marks the buzzz just has better stability. You can throw it with a bit of speed and it can still fly straight and have a slight fade back. Mako3 is a bit more touchy but it holds your release angle better at slower speeds.
I hear what you are saying. For myself, the flight characteristics of the Buzzz and Roc3 are pretty similar, which is why I think they get compared. The molds are definitely different though as you say. My wife and I will be doing a comparison video in the near future, so look out for it!
The Mako 3 may be the most underrated disc out there. It forces the newer and experienced player to develop the proper release angles. Easy to grip as well. Thx for the video!
Daryl Capen Could not agree more! That’s why I feel most players would benefit from the disc. Everyone needs a straight flying discs for those tight gaps/moments where you can afford much turn or fade!
Warning about Sidewinders; the most inconsistent disc I have ever experienced in all the years I have played disc golf. I own 7 Sidewinders, and no two discs are the same. To be clear, and what is the most confusing, is that the flight variations have NOTHING to do with weight or plastic. I have a 159 g sidewinder that I cannot turn over if I try my hardest, then a 165 g that will flip terribly if I put a moderate pull on it. Then another 165 g that will fade like a Boss. If you are a beginner, don’t buy a Sidewinder, because you are likely to be confused and misled. The reason I own seven Sidewinders? Because the first one I owned, I liked, and in an attempt to have a spare one on hand, I got duped into buying more until I found one that flew the same as the one I liked. After buying six more, I have not been able to duplicate the one that I like, and again, none of the seven Sidewinders are the same as any of the others. This has not been a problem with any other discs that I have owned. When I eventually lose the Sidewinder I like, I will be moving on to another mold, and never buy another Sidewinder. Brutal.
@@johnetches9741 had a similar experience. Had one as a staple in my bag for years, when I lost I ran through 5 more without ever being able to get one I liked.
I wish I had read your post long ago. Two years ago "won" a league ctp and that was the disc obtained for said. Left it in bag and periodically threw it trying to figure out the roller. Fast forward to losing a disc on a round (common for me) and turning to the sidewinder for forehand throws. Stunned that it just went so straight (the glide) and only broke about what half of my boss throws do at the end. Now I throw it both back and fore. Which makes it odd given I throw 7 speeds best back and 11/12 speeds fore (am over 60 thus the lack of snap).
I bought a mako3 a few months back and it's my favorite disc i've ever had. As a beginner it feels really rewarding to throw a good shot with that compared to something else. On other discs i feel that there has to be some "luck" involved, because it's hard to release them on the exact angle and get them to turn at the exact moment you want it to turn. But the Mako3 just goes where ever you aim whether it's on a Hyzer/Anny/Straight.
Thanks for sharing your experience Hemlig! It’s a great disc for any skill levels, but it’s especially great for learning proper form. All around great disc that every should have! 👌
I'm just now getting back into frisbee golf disc throwing I'm Jason Falcon 76 FalconXstreaM fastest motocross Supercross one of greatest Freestyle Motocross racers I shattered both my legs on 1 20 01 but Highland park disc golf park longest driveways in the world Baton Rouge louisiana is my park. Thoughtfully reasoned and well produced. As for the beginner bag of Aviar-Mako3-Sidewinder, there's a lot to recommend it. I'd even go so far as to say it's a better beginner bag than the usual Innova starter kit of Aviar-Shark-Leopard. Well done.
Thanks so much Robert! We thought hard about what would work for all skill levels and we are glad that you noticed that. We will be doing another “3 disc everybody should have” in the near future which won’t include only Innova. Thanks for being a part of this community 👍
Great advice...a friend recently got a Sidewinder and we were both blown away with throws and additional distance he was able to produce with the disc!
Holden Byler Yeah its great disc for sure! Effortless distance for beginners, and big swinging shots/rollers for pros. It’s a win win! And thanks for the comment Holden! By the way, please message me on Instagram or email (justdiscjd@gmail.com). I’ve got a nice surprise for you! 👌

This video made me discoverer True North Disc Golf, I work close by and I didn't know there was a real disc golf store in the region ! So Happy to know about them now !!!
Over the last year I have incorporated all of these (plus the Caiman and Wraith!) into my bag and found ALL of them irreplaceable. Incredible discs and just stellar recommendations.
It’s so nice to hear you say that Eric! We appreciate you enjoying the discs we’ve recommended. That’s exactly our intentions, and we’re glad they’ve work out for someone like you. Thanks for the feedback 👍❤️
Definitely an improvement, can tell you were arming the disc a lot more in 2020. You got a lot more power you can tap into. I'd say 2 things you could work on next is first, don't look backwards too early, you want to keep the back foot square, coil on the very last step and reach "out". Second is, you're looking forwards at release and spinning out, so focus on looking at around 9-o-clock until the disc is gone. Really slam into your front foot, keep your head still, stay behind the hit, and let your momentum bring your head up and finish balanced on that front foot. You can work on it when you're just chillin at home. Cheers!
Love the feedback Ben, thanks for the tips to work on further improving! 👍 Not sure if I’ll ever be able to “slam” into my front foot as much as others, mainly due to my torn (and now repaired) ACL. I almost feel that I now instinctively try to avoid pivoting too much into my right knee :p Still going to work on those great tips though, thanks again ❤️👍
Judge is the disc I recommend to everyone starting disc golf ! Since I switched to Judges as my putting putter, approach disc, and driving putter-I have seen a great drop in scoring average and I have thrown my first 2 Aces ! The discs you described here are great as well! But Judge is my favorite ! Nice review !!!
This is a really well done video. I like your approach and how you mentioned similar alternatives for the putters. Sidewinder, great disc for beginner drivers
One of my favorite discs is the aviar, I actually have the 2 chain version and even though it's worth a lot of money I like it to much to get rid of it.
Great video! Sidewinder is one of my go-to's for threading the needle forehands in the woods, rollers, and big annys! I always say if you want to learn clean release and good spin on a forehand, grab a sidewinder. It doesn't hide any flaws and won't correct for you like a firebird does.
It’s true! We just recently did a video for the Falk and compared it with the Sidewinder… In the end, the Sidewinder is still the better disc. So many ways to use it and the performance is unmatched! 👌
I just got into disc golf, and the Mako3 is one of the 3 disks I have. I got it after playing disc golf with my cousins, and we'd all fight over who gets to use it, since it flies so straight and it is so easy to throw.
Good picks. I started with an Aviar for putting, moved to Judge and then to a JB Roach, but keep the heavier Aviar for windy approach over my lighter Mako. I'll have to try a Sidewinder, but so far have never been happy with Champion plastic - way to overstable for my slower arm speed.
My friend loves his sidewinder in the star plastic for anhyzer and rollers. I’m sure the star plastic would better suit you, especially in another weight! Looking at doing another one of these videos in the future and I want to include the buzz, leopard3 and one another disc. Any suggestions?
@@JustDisc you've about named my whole bag - Big Z Buzz, Pro Leopard, but a couple others I wouldn't be without: Champion Roc3, Prime Escape (they get beat up fast, but I like this plastic for an escape) and a 150g G Star Katana (forehands and drives and is very forgivable). I just love my Tern, but there always seems to be a better choice.
I've thrown 5 or 6 different discs in Champion plastic and every one of them goes about 20 metres and crashes into the ground. I hate Champion plastic. When I throw discs in Star or G Star plastic, the sail for a good distance and go where I want them. Those are my favourite plastics and all of my Innova discs are Star or G Star. BTW: I just got an RPM Piwakawaka in Atomic plastic and I love it. Atomic plastic is very close to Star plastic.
@@beatlesrgear I get ya. I'm on my third year playing and one week ago today my throw came together, seriously, as if by magic I can now pull straight through. I gained 10m over my longest throws and that's at 2/3 power. My big bag of G Stars are flippy and I'm starting to replace them with some of my hated Champions. Just saying, keep them tucked away. You never know.
Jason Falcon 76 my panther 171 grams can win any and all player's being 6'8 helps alot. Awesome to see other's throw 800 feet. Throws we all know 800 is a dream but possibly done from rollers after windsail after over throw 550 footers.
I totally agree with you about the Mako3. That disc is fantastic! I have it in G Star plastic because Champion plastic is too overstable. It loses it's arrow straight quality in Champion. The Sidewinder is OK, but I got rid of mine because I discovered the Roadrunner. My Star Roadrunner is far better than my Star Sidewinder was. Straighter flight, longer distance, better feel. I love the Roadrunner. I haven't tried out any Aviar putters yet. I put pretty well with the Judge and the Deputy (Dynamic Discs) and the Wizard (SSS & SSSS) by Gateway Discs. Another disc I think that is an absolute must is the Innova Mamba. This baby has glide for days and being understable, it is great for beginners and intermediate players. Champion Mambas are more overstable than Star or G Star. I find the Mamba and the Leopard are my "Desert Iland discs." I could not live without them.
As a putter I prefer DiscMania P2, it is actually pretty close to Aviar, and Aviar is also very good disc. I just got Mako3 as a christmas present, and i look out to spring to test the disc on fields.
Great video. Gave the Aviar a go, but the one I tried was too light for me, so my experience with it wasn't good. I am a big fan of the Wardens and Judges, but as you say, they get really beat up with that DX plastic. For me the touch on those discs makes for a lot of confidence at mid and close range putts. I also use them for forehand approaches at 50 - 150 feet on some occasions. I'd argue that the Dart in the Star plastic is a great putt approach disc that a lot of golfers should look at. It is a dome top putter, which I know is a turn off for some people. I tend to get a bit tense on the longer 50 foot plus putts, and end up either early releasing or overcompensating with my Judges and Wardens, discs I love on shorter putts. I know from throwing my Dart Stars in lots of situations that I need to dial back the throw even for longer putts, which helps me keep my form better. I also like the Dart Stars on days when I am dropping my Judge and Warden putts low on shorter putts, maybe because of nerves, maybe because of conditions. The Dart Stars help me overcome this tendency and get me back on track. I am very keen to pick up a Mako when I get back to the States in December. My golfing buddy has two of them and absolutely loves them. He's more of a power thrower than me and likes heavier weights, but those 5 extra grams he has with his discs make a big difference when I try and throw them. I'd like to have a Maco in 167-169 grams to see how I do with it. I am very curious about the Sidewinder, a disc that I have heard about but still haven't had a chance to throw. My go to drivers for different situations are the Shryke, the Wraith, and the Katana. The way you describe this disc make me feel that the Sidewinder could fit well in that repertoire. I will definitely look to get one or two when I am back Stateside. Thanks again for an awesome video!
No problem Phillip, it's our pleasure! The Dart is definitely an excellent disc and I used to use it constantly not too long ago (now replaced with the Berg). It has incredible glide, is great for spin putts, and can hold anhyzer lines beautifully! Anyways thanks for providing your thoughts on the suggested discs! Are there any other you'd recommend?
I think a typical Innova starter pack is great for beginners and those discs can become invaluable tools and reusable molds as the person gains more experience and perhaps wants to upgrade plastic type. I also prefer the Mako3 to the Shark because it's more neutral, which (like the Aviar) can be a great training tool over time. The Leopard I think is also great because for beginners it's not understable for them, and will allow them to get max distance, and in time they can upgrade to faster and more overstable discs, but the Leopard can still have a lot of use for forehand (most people don't throw as far with that as they do backhand. The DX Aviar is still my primary putter, and Star Leopard still my primary driver, though I sometimes use a Gazelle or TeeBird when I want something a little more stable. Lastly the FD is really good as a neutral driver, between the TeeBird and Leopard.
Yeah I was actually considering recommending the leopard3 over the sidewinder for this video, but I had just gotten a leopard3 and did not have enough practice and video clips to recommend it. It’s an awesome disc and I think everybody should carry one! As for the the FD, I haven’t tried one, but it’s interesting that you mention it would fit between the teebird and leopard. Thanks for the insight!
Wraith, Harp, and basically any putter would be a perfect starting trio. Imo it’s worth a few extra dollars considering the tremendous improvement in plastic and overall disc quality.
I have a Mako3 and a Sidewinder in the bag. I don't like Aviars as putters but prefer Proxys by MVP. I use the Mako3 for straight shorter shots that I don't want to fade or slide a long way (OB water long etc..) and the Sidewinder for straighter or longer wooded shots that don't have a backstop. If you like throwing putters you really don't need a Mako3 because it's just not a long range disc (I dont like throwing putters long). I think every beginner should bag a sidewinder though. If you don't like Mako3s you should look at a Truth (non Emax) because I find they fly very similarly once a Truth is beat in.
Mako3 solid disc 1st year golfer. After a year its worked its way out of my bag. My top 3 backhand is tournament plastic sword. Tourny warship and a prodigy pa-1 in 300 soft top 3 forehand lucid enforcer lucid justice and gateway devilhawk in hemp blend aka the better slammer
Hey Trail, thanks for asking! I would honestly recommend getting a starter pack that gives you 3 discs to start. It’s the perfect way to learn the game without over complicating things. Check them out! infinitediscs.com/Products/Starter-Sets?tag=0822d82a
It really depends on how hard you throw, your form, etc. It would be something where I’d have to see a few of your throws to recommend some discs. But if there is any disc I would recommend starting with, it would be the Mako3. And if there was any starter set I would recommend starting with, it would be the Discmania Evolution 3 disc set. Hope this helps! :)
Have 2 of the 3. The Mako3 is one of my absolute favorites and close behind as a Midrange is the Saint. I have the Aviar as well but use the steady as my primary putter and as for fairway driver I love the Thunderbird, but will check out the Sidewinder for sure. Thanks for the great video.
My beginner 3 would be: Putter, literally any that is in your price range and feels nice in your hand. They are so similar that unless you're an advanced/pro player you won't throw the minute differences. Midrange, Mako3 or even a Buzzz because of the subtle to no turn/fade that a newer player will appreciate developing technique and consistency with. Driver, honestly nope. But if you insist on beginning with drivers something no greater than a 9 speed. A River or T-Bone are nice neutral discs for example. Now if you don't care for technique and want to just have fun and play, pick the ones that feel good or look cool and have at it! It is just a fun game with friends for most of us after all
I bag all three 😂. I used to use the regular Aviar but have switched to the kc pro, and I’ve loved the star mako for my straight shots, and my champion sidewinder my forehand and backhand turn over disc.
The Mako 3 in star plastic was my first disc ever. Still have it in the bag and would still use it more if it didn't have so much sentimental value (need to get another I'm not afraid to lose). I love the flight of the Aviar but cannot stand the way it feels in my hand so I throw a Challanger. The Sidewinder is not a disc I would give a beginner it is too fast and really with it having such a good glide a beginner could probably throw a lighter (160ish gram) Mako 3 further than they could any Sidewinder.
Thanks for sharing Mike! Yeah a beginner would definitely throw a Mako3 further than a sidewinder, unless of course the sidewinder was a bit lighter. All depends on the player of course! :)
Early in my disc golf days I found a sidewinder in the wild (no name or phone number on it) - and lost it this summer. Needless to say I got a new one!
used to bag the Star Aviar, don't know why exactly I swapped it out, but I put with a westside shield these days, something about the tournament plastic just feels great... Have a Mako3 in the bag for soft straight shots or hyzer flips and turnover shots and when I need more stability in my midrange I pull out the Roc3. Also used to bag a roadrunner which I honestly loved for long hyzer flips etc, but I turned it over too much not long ago and it sailed away over the treetops never to be seen again. Some other highly recommended discs tho I would say are the Westside Underworld, Latitude Explorer and Innova Wraith. The underworld flies great, great glide and allows you to really work your angles, if you need a straight shot, but can't reach with a mid, just flip the underworld up and it goes dead straight , and if you need it to turn over you can just put a little more power into it. The explorer is just a really solid straight flying fairway with a consistent flight. It can handle alot of power and the smaller but deeper than usual rim makes it feel great in your hand. Despite being a 7 speed disc I can almost bomb that thing out as far as my distance drivers it's amazing. And last but note least the wraith, just a great distance driver, flips up and holds a slight turn untill it gets a reliable fade at the end. I've personally started throwing some faster discs lately as my technique and armspeed has improved, but the wraith is still my go to...
Thanks for the insight! - I pretty much do the same with my Mako3. If I need more stability I go for my King Cobra or Roc3 -I’ve heard good things about the explorer, but I have yet to try it! -And the wraith is now my favourite driver by far. I’ve literally bought another 3 so I think I now have something like 7-8 of them lol (only carry 2 though). It’s just a disc that can do so much and is the perfect speed for my throw. Love it! We did a review on that disc if you haven’t checked it out 👍
The Sidewinder if not that then use the Valkyrie in the plastic you want provided the disc is not in the super stiff possibly illegal stiff Champion plastic or even a Star run like this or a disc that is flat to slightly concave for a beginner. The flat to slightly concave Valkyrie disc will fly more OS like a worn in Eagle or that of a new Viking, I use a Star in the flat to micro concave for a Windier Valkyrie then my Glow Champion when going that flight then have a Messed up Champion Archon for more wind due to virtually no glide on the mold so the disc flies on the Valkyrie flight I need for wind but have a Star Archon for throwing my longest consistent knowing where the disc is going shot. One not mentioned is the Glide for the same reason the Mako/Mako 3 is used by others or the Wombat/3 by other players, to get the disc to fly in those tight gaps that nothing else will work or some longer tunnel shots. Similar disc I use is OOP with several backup Impact at the 170-172 and 173-174 gram weight sets with one 175 gam disc since those under 169 grams and the Impact over 170 grams do not work for throwing unless over powering .
I bought my 180gm Star Mako3 because of this video. It’s my favorite disc. I got 3 Birdies with it yesterday and was offered any 2 discs in another players bag for it. I said “Hell No!”
One I do not like is the Aviar due to the disc wing shape. I have found other putter Magent/Titanic in Proline for my putter mold and if they stopped both molds and I lost/wore out my molds, the Hydra beat in to fly more Magent like would be the mold I have for shorter shots and slightly longer would be Hydra nearer to new. The Shark now in bag for short midrange/approach to long putter shots that whole range and as driving putter would be taken out and would be using newer Hydra for the whole slot.
@@JustDisc My Dad too when he played more, for some short shots that either his Rubber Putter by Lighting oop brand owned by Gotta Go Gotta Throw now or his old hard Unknown baseline Wizard for a driving putter, for approach too with all but the Wizard. The Wizard is hard to control distance wise for approach stuff since Wizard is very unique in that it can be used as a putter better then approach up to very long distances and actually running OS putts similar to the Rubber Putter where that is for straight line putting/approach but can do approach putting. Of all the putters he has I think the Wizard is first out of his bag since the mold is not great for anything except driving putter or a longer putter and he has other molds that do specific longer putter/OS putter or all around better since his main putting putter is so floppy the Ching Juju in Supreme.
I really had to go look for the Notes to find a 'not sponsored by innova' i was really surprised. ... picking up the fact that all 3 proposed so called best disks mentioned are from innova i was expecting this to be a secret sponsored video.
Hey Sander! Yeah, it's not sponsored by Innova. The only reason for the TOP 3 was based on what I've used/had when the channel was just getting started. I didn't want to recommend something like the Buzz if I haven't thrown it consistently. We are doing PART 2 VERY SOON, which will include 3 DIFFERENT BRANDS. Be on the lookout! 👌
I bag one of these in my bag. But its Yeti pro aviar (better grip), Star sidewinder (hello flippy, I prefer leopard3) and mako3 Star. Have you tried out Halo Mako3? I was curious about it But imeveryone I seen been very domey
Never tried a Halo Mako3 yet, but we enjoy it in the champion to maintain better stability. For us, it’s kind of one of those discs that has a great straight flight right out of the box. Thus, getting it in the champion maintains its flight for as long as possible before having to replace it. But of course, that’s just our opinion!
There is only one size of Aviar in terms of diameter, but it comes in several different plastic types/molds. If you are new, I would just stick with the classic DX Aviar (Dx referring to the type of plastic). It’s the cheapest, the most comfortable and a good way to get started! Here is the Amazon link of the disc I’m talking about www.amazon.ca/dp/B00611Y2N8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2W44PJHM2617BK5BKB1J?psc=1 Hope this helps! 👍
I use sidewinder and Mako3. Sidewinder is a great fairway driver and get out of trouble disc. Mako3 until recently was my main putter and I still use it for far puts but I was consistently hitting 50-60 yard puts. I also found a champion mako3 so now I have the star and champion in my bag.
@@JustDisc I like the champion for midrange use because at least for me it’s a tad straighter and does better in wind. But the star doesn’t roll as bad so I put with that so it doesn’t roll as bad if I miss
Nice! Complete agree with you on the champion being more stable and better in the wind! That’s the plastic that I use. I did have the star, but I gave it to my wife. I agree that it would be better for putting!
@@JustDisc it’s great. I’ve saved countless games from being a disaster by getting long distance puts with it. And the approach with the champion is as good as it gets
It’s all really dependant on your skill level/experience, but I can help!:). What do you typically shoot, how far do you throw on and how long you been playing?
A brand new course just opened within walking distance from my home. I have not really thrown much since college, 30 plus years ago. I played what we used to call “frisbee golf” in college. I can see myself playing the course on the days I’m not biking so 2 - 3 days a week.
@@ExploreThe50 Well, as a general rule, anything below 5-6 speed I would get max weight (which is anywhere from 175g to 180). Usually putters are 175 and mid ranges (like the Mako3) are 180. As for fairway drivers to drivers, I would stick to 165-170 ranges, especially if you are older and/or haven’t thrown in awhile. Hope this helps! 👍😁
I feel like the Star Atlas from Innova is an underrated disc, I prefer it to a Mako3 any day of the week! I started out with a Mako3, but changed it to an Atlas later on.
It depends on what you mean by forgiving. The champion is a bit more stable, and it’s flight will stay the same longer. Having tried both, we recommend the champion 👍
i love your channel but have to disagree with your picks. Avair's are a classic pick but i think that putters need to be selected based on feel. As for the Mako3, I think a Roc3 would be a better pick, and for a driver i would pick a teebird or TL. My pick would all be in DX plastics so you can get used to those molds and start layering.
I hear ya Brian! We have a 2nd “3 discs every disc golfer should have Part 2” that will include a different brands of discs. As for the choices, remember that these disc choices are for ALL SKILL LEVELS. The sidewinder is debatable, but an aviar putter and Mako3 midrange are perfect, especially for beginners. Agreed that the Roc3 and Teebird are great all around choices, but not for a beginner
I personally like the buzzz much more than the msko3…. If I had to play a 3 disc round I’d use a judge, vroc & the buzzz…. Or maybe a foxbat instead of the vRoc
Hey thanks for the feedback! They were actually mentioned as other options and not as direct clone replacements to the aviar. I just know they are great putters in general :)
@@JustDisc I’ve been playing on n off for a few years now. Very comfortable with most shots. Just want something consistent for my forehand that has a slight natural tail.
Definitely get max weight if you are going to be using it for forehands. It’s not necessarily a good forehand disc, just because it can be a bit touchy. However, I still use it for forehand touchy approach shots when I need it to hold a specific line 👍
If you are just getting into it, just 1 disc will suffice. Preferably a midrange is ideal (like a 5 speed). If you start playing more frequently, then you can begin to carry a putter, midrange and driver. Hope this helps! 👍
Mamba and Sidewinder are both great choices. From my personal experience, the mamba is easier to turn over than the sidewinder, even though it’s 2 speeds higher. I think the star plastic for either or is a good choice. If you go with the mamba, don’t be afraid to go up a few grams and if you get the sidewinder, I think 170 -172 sounds pretty good! 👍
Im a beginner and the sidewinder wasnt available at my dicks sporting goods so i picked up the beast in champion plastic. I havent played a game tet but my forehand on the sidewinder is pretty accurate, so i wanted to get it but i couldnt. What are your thoughts on the beast by innova
Great disc Gavin, no reason to worry! My dad and friend love their beast. It’s a great disc to grow and get better with. IMO, it’s a way better forehand disc than the sidewinder in the long run 👍
I don’t like the mako3 maybe that’s an unpopular opinion. I’d rather throw a chariot for a straight midrange shot and a beat in chariot for hyzer flips to slight turn. And the caiman for all over stable mid range shots, it’s basically a faster zone with more glide, awesome disc.
@@JustDisc I have it two plastics-luster champion and DX. I prefer harder plastics to putt with. I enjoy that it’s flat topped and flies straight with less fade and more speed than the Aviar-which itself is a great putter. I find that the Invader isn’t as easily affected by the wind.
I prefer P2 over aviar but i really like aviarx3 for some throws but my luster c line p2 is better in my opinion. I had mako3 and i hated it so much i always flipped it and never got right angle so i gave it away. The sidewinder is very nice altought i dont habe it in my bag my understable fairway is essence i really like it for those straight to slightly right turning throws
Great video! I bag all three of these discs. I'm currently contemplating switching the Mako3 out for the Atlas, because it feels like the slight fade leads to more predictable flights. Have you thrown an Atlas?
Thank you! Yes I have thrown an Atlas and it is more stable/predictable. I’m personally not a fan of it due to the unique rim and the lesser glide. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad disc though, just not for me :) Personally, I would suggest the King Cobra. Its so stable for a 4 speed and has nice consistent slight fade at the end. It’s basically like a beaten in Roc3 or just a straight up Buzz. I love it and have been using it for years. May even do a video on it since I find it keeps almost any line I put on it. Hope this helps! 👍
Have the Mako3 and also the Discraft Buzzz! Love both these discs.... however I often come to a shot and am tossing and turning over which of these discs to use. Wondering if for confidence reasons I should take one of them out of my bag? I like both these discs.... any reason why I should have both in my bag? I mean as far as I can tell (and I am newer to DG) they are used for the same shot. Any tips or advice would be appreciated!
We love these types of questions! If you feel they both do the exact same thing, then take one of them out. If however you find that one of them acts a little different, like for instance, the buzz doesn’t turn over as easy or has more of a fade finish, then it’s a good idea to have both. If you need more clarification, let us know!
When I eventually lose the one Sidewinder that I like, I will be moving on to another mold, and never buy another Sidewinder. Brutal. Bad advice about Sidewinders in this video.
Hey Tor! Good question/observation but we’d like to clarify something. Please understand that this channel has only existed since March 2020. For the first year or so, we had to stick to disc golf equipment we already had, which was a lot of Innova and Discraft. Now that the channel is starting to be more successful, we are getting access to newer/different brands of discs! For instance, we actually have a Kastaplast Berg review coming out tomorrow! And we are super excited to share this video and talk about this disc. Personally, I now only approach with a berg and pig! In addition, we are going to be doing another 3 Discs Everybody Should Have video in the coming months, which won’t include just Innova. Hopefully his helps clarify! Merci!
@@JustDisc very good! Not only because we get to see a kastaplast, but that your explanation makes it easy to understand how to interpret your recommendations! I'm sure you had a good reason and now I know it :) Good luck with your channel, it's One of the better ones!
You aren’t the first to say that! I think it’s just because I grew up on it, and it’s hard using anything else because it works so well for me. Although, most of the top putters are pretty similar
@@JustDisc when available I'm going to grab the elevation koi putters. I love the interceptor midrange. Rubber putter might be interesting. That sounds like quebec canadian French correct? Btw love the content. Keep it up.
Can't stand any of the Aviar putters. They just don't work for me. It's the Discraft Challenger in Jawbreaker plastic. Mako3, I like it, worked well for me, but I prefer the Axiom Hex. Sidewinder is an amazing disc, I bagged it for a long time....but I use the Axiom Insanity now for that spot.
@@shotsie8822 oh ok I get your question! It’s just dependant on the type of aviar putter. Therefore, not all of them have a picture of a basket on them

Jawbreaker is a baseline plastic type for discraft. It’s not actually a mold
Yeah it’s a plastic type for mostly putters (should have been more clear). If I were to recommend a specific one, it would be the magnet or challenger

Now the weird thing is l don't mind my Jawbreaker Zone's being puddle top, because l'm not looking for glide in a zone!
As a beginner, the Mako3 would be my disc of choice in a one disc only round.
Even for more experienced players, the Mako3 is a great one round disc. So many options for shot shapes and its slow enough to be used decently as a putter.
Yea I agree can’t wait to scoop one up 🤘🏽
My goto is a r pro rhino
I just got into the game and my first disc was a Star Mako3.
Mako3 is awesome. For a beginner, it will show you what you’re doing. For everyone else, it’s incredibly neutral in it’s sweet spot for distance.
the mako3 is probably my favorite disc.
My Mako flies straight as an arrow
People hear sidewinder and put it in the roller only category. It is a fantastic max distance air shot disc for all arm speeds!!
For sure! If you get it in champion plastic at max weight, and it won’t be too understable 👍

@@johnetches9741 thank you, I was just thing of getting one as a beginner, still might but it seems its not the disc im looking for.

This video made me discoverer True North Disc Golf, I work close by and I didn't know there was a real disc golf store in the region ! So Happy to know about them now !!!
It’s a great store, pretty much anything you could want 👌
Not sure if I’ll ever be able to “slam” into my front foot as much as others, mainly due to my torn (and now repaired) ACL. I almost feel that I now instinctively try to avoid pivoting too much into my right knee :p
Still going to work on those great tips though, thanks again ❤️👍
Excellent. I had the Mako3 on my wishlist, I'll have to consider the other 2. Smash.
Thanks John! You are right, the judge is another excellent choice 👌
This is a really well done video. I like your approach and how you mentioned similar alternatives for the putters. Sidewinder, great disc for beginner drivers
Appreciate the comment Peter! We’ve got lots to videos just like this one. And don’t forget to check out Part 2 and Part 3 when you get a chance! 😎👍
One of my favorite discs is the aviar, I actually have the 2 chain version and even though it's worth a lot of money I like it to much to get rid of it.
100% agree. I don’t currently putt with classic aboard but the mako3 and especially the sidewinder are staples in my bag
Love to hear it! Make sure you check out our other videos in the series, Part 2 & Part 3! 👍
Ive hit multiple aces with both the base model and gstar sidewinder. Love it.
That’s so funny 😂. It’s a great disc! 👍
@@brokenrecord3523 Hmmm...you've got me thinking now......
sidewinder is the GOAT it was the first disc i could consistently throw
Exactly why we recommended it for all skill levels!
P2s are popular for a reason! And you can’t go wrong with a Mako3, even as you get better 👍
I love it when you said "The Discraft Jawbreaker"
That wall light is awesome!!
Had a sidewinder way back when. Found it in a creek! I also find the Flying Squirrel flies similar to the Mako3.
Never tried or even heard of it but thanks for letting us know!
Good advice!
I agree I use all three. Great Video.
Thanks for watching Adam!
Thanks for your input Jay!

@@JustDisc If you had three discs to purchase.. (I'm a side thrower).. which three would you recommend?
Thanks David!
Thats a high speed midrange in the saint that thing bombs off the tee 300+
My beginner 3 would be:
Putter, literally any that is in your price range and feels nice in your hand.
It is just a fun game with friends for most of us after all
Great advice Cade! Thanks for sharing 👍
I use the mako3 nonstop. a must have.
I bag all three 😂. I used to use the regular Aviar but have switched to the kc pro, and I’ve loved the star mako for my straight shots, and my champion sidewinder my forehand and backhand turn over disc.
I love my Mako!
I 2nd that statement
I love your mako
Great disc! 🙌
When I first started I used the leopard, and I loved it.
used to bag the Star Aviar, don't know why exactly I swapped it out, but I put with a westside shield these days, something about the tournament plastic just feels great...
If I need more stability I go for my King Cobra or Roc3
-I’ve heard good things about the explorer, but I have yet to try it!
Thanks Mike, we are glad you are enjoying the disc! ❤️
My friend loves his hydra!
I love your show, you are great!
I recognize the course at 1:50!
La fortune right?
Thanks for the great video and advice
Thanks Iain, we appreciate the feedback. And yes LaFortune! 🙌 It’s a beautiful course
How do you know what size to get for the innova aviar putt & approach? Never played disc golf before.
There is only one size of Aviar in terms of diameter, but it comes in several different plastic types/molds. If you are new, I would just stick with the classic DX Aviar (Dx referring to the type of plastic). It’s the cheapest, the most comfortable and a good way to get started! Here is the Amazon link of the disc I’m talking about www.amazon.ca/dp/B00611Y2N8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2W44PJHM2617BK5BKB1J?psc=1
Hope this helps!
Nice! Out of the star and champion Mako3, which do you prefer?
@@JustDisc I like the champion for midrange use because at least for me it’s a tad straighter and does better in wind. But the star doesn’t roll as bad so I put with that so it doesn’t roll as bad if I miss
Nice! Complete agree with you on the champion being more stable and better in the wind! That’s the plastic that I use. I did have the star, but I gave it to my wife. I agree that it would be better for putting!
@@JustDisc it’s great. I’ve saved countless games from being a disaster by getting long distance puts with it. And the approach with the champion is as good as it gets
I have an origin and I like it. As a beginner should I get another midrange like mako3?
Definitely not. If it flies straight for you and it’s getting the job done, there is no reason to get the Mako3. 👍
I enjoyed the video and looked at the discs recommended. How do you select the best weight in these discs?
Thank you
Champion Boss, champion excalibur, star teebird!
I feel like the Star Atlas from Innova is an underrated disc, I prefer it to a Mako3 any day of the week! I started out with a Mako3, but changed it to an Atlas later on.
Atlas is a great disc, definitely underrated 👍
Which one is more forgiving Star Mako3 or Champion Mako3? Thanks
It depends on what you mean by forgiving. The champion is a bit more stable, and it’s flight will stay the same longer. Having tried both, we recommend the champion 👍
Maybe I should say for beginner to intermediate player, we have been playing for two years on and off because the park is quite far for us. Thanks
@@twinkle04evr Yeah, get the champion. It’s a more popular choice for this mold
I just got it today, champion with the weight of 167, thanks
Anyone like the Raven, it’s been my favourite forever. I’m not always comfortable switching, it tends to mess me up.
We’ve never tried it!
JD... great videos, great presentation... especially for a new player like myself... you’re a great teacher!
Thanks Clay! We are having a blast making them and we greatly appreciate your comment. It’s people like you that keep us going! 👍❤️
i love your channel but have to disagree with your picks.
We definitely can’t argue with the Buzzz, it’s the best selling midrange for a reason! We put it in our part 2 video if you haven’t send it yet 👍
The Sidewinder was my first disc that I used to limit overhand distance. 👍
It’s a great disc. I’m thinking of bringing it back into my back 👍
Mako3 no question.
Think the Valkyrie could have made it in there. Great utility disc.
It is a great disc! 👍 We’ll be doing a 2nd version of the top 3 in the coming weeks so look out for it!
Ehh, I wouldn’t recommend the challenger or the judge for being a classic aviar clone, I’d say the Roach/Luna or the Warden imo
Hey thanks for the feedback! They were actually mentioned as other options and not as direct clone replacements to the aviar. I just know they are great putters in general :)
I throw a truth and it is pretty broken in but when I first got it it was a lazer
For the mako3, what weight? Does the grams matter?
How long have you been playing? Most likely I would get the disc in a eight anywhere between 170g to 180gs 👍
So you should have a putter, midrange and long range disc?
Are you new to the sport?
@@JustDisc yeah, ive been once lol.
If you are just getting into it, just 1 disc will suffice. Preferably a midrange is ideal (like a 5 speed). If you start playing more frequently, then you can begin to carry a putter, midrange and driver. Hope this helps! 👍
@@JustDisc thanks man!
If I wanted a more understable sidewinder for turn over shots should I get something like star plastic and like 170-172 weight?
What do you currently use?
I don’t currently have a reliable understable disc for hyzer flips/ turnovers. I’m an intermediate player.
Was thinking maybe mamba, roadrunner or sidewinder
Mamba and Sidewinder are both great choices. From my personal experience, the mamba is easier to turn over than the sidewinder, even though it’s 2 speeds higher. I think the star plastic for either or is a good choice. If you go with the mamba, don’t be afraid to go up a few grams and if you get the sidewinder, I think 170 -172 sounds pretty good! 👍
As for the roadrunner, I think it would just turn over too much for you, even at max weight
Oui oui, ils sont super ces discs! :)
Oui ils sont! On va faire une autre vidéo de 3discs à l’avenir, alors restez à l’écoute! 👍
Absolutely true all of it
I don’t like the mako3 maybe that’s an unpopular opinion. I’d rather throw a chariot for a straight midrange shot and a beat in chariot for hyzer flips to slight turn. And the caiman for all over stable mid range shots, it’s basically a faster zone with more glide, awesome disc.
I have the dd judge putter dd escape fairway and the dd truth midrange
Nice discs! 👍
The Invader has been in my bag since release.
Nice! What do you like about it? Never tried it personally
DGA breaker has shed many strokes off My game
Doesn’t mean it’s a bad disc though, just not for me :)
Personally, I would suggest the King Cobra. Its so stable for a 4 speed and has nice consistent slight fade at the end. It’s basically like a beaten in Roc3 or just a straight up Buzz. I love it and have been using it for years. May even do a video on it since I find it keeps almost any line I put on it. Hope this helps! 👍
Try the Gateway Prophecy
a paradox is a really good utility disc
We’ll check it out!
@@JustDisc great.... thank you!
I would also recommend a escape
Great disc!
Funny af that I have all three of those discs in my bag. And I run them All. The. Time.
When I eventually lose the one Sidewinder that I like, I will be moving on to another mold, and never buy another Sidewinder. Brutal. Bad advice about Sidewinders in this video.
I'm consistently missing kastaplast discs in your lineup. Is it because you don't like them or you're just focusing on American brands?
I'm sure you had a good reason and now I know it :)
Good luck with your channel, it's One of the better ones!
Very good choices.
Unpopular opinion though, I hate the way the mako feels in my hand and I use a panther instead.
All good! We completely understand 👍
Aviar is actually one of the few putt/approaches I don't like. Fell of the rim I think, not sure.
Keep it up.
You should include other brands as well
That will be in our next video! We have a 3 discs everybody should have Part 2 that will be arriving in august :)
@@JustDisc
Great!
Thank you for the first video😀
Roc, Aviar, Valkyrie
All amazing discs as well. If the disc choices weren't based on being usable for All Skill Levels, I would go Aviar, Teebird, Wraith
For me it will be Judge (Sorry Innova); Mako (not the Mako3) and Wraith
Wraith all the way!
@@JustDisc MORE than one :)
@@kedevash Yeah I can't stop buying them :S
Envy the best throwing putter ever made
Not too sure about that one 😝
@@JustDisc If your going for max distance and max accuracy I havent found anything that can beat it imo
I’ll have to check it out! 👍
Didn't know jawbreaker was a putter haha
It’s not lol. It’s just the type of plastic :p
My friend loves his Insanity!
And, all of the discs you mentioned/play with are all excellent as well 👍
He's obviously a Innova Disc Guy.....Valkyrie , Wombat and Judge are in my opinion a go too 3 disc
It’s just one of our earlier videos when we only had Innova discs
Excellent!
Thanks Mark!
Do some aviers have a basket on them
?
The basket picture
Like the putter in the Innova starter pack
@@shotsie8822 oh ok I get your question! It’s just dependant on the type of aviar putter. Therefore, not all of them have a picture of a basket on them
Thanks for answering my question I was just wondering
You work for Innova?
No, that was just one of our first videos when we had less experience with other brands
