I think MVP responding here makes perfect sense and isn't crazy at all. Let's be real. MVP is selling these cheap discs to recover what would otherwise be lost costs. Generating a bunch of online conversation and giving some small group of people a way to figure out which cheap moulds to buy to match discs they know they like just means reducing storage times in the warehouse. Smart business all around. Great creative solution to reduce inefficiencies and allow them to do more with their resources. You love to see it!
Yeah, I think this is good practice especially for the beginners who look for cheap discs to try out. Instead of getting a Swedish baseline plastic disc that gets destroyed in a month or a Chinese disc that can't handle a gentle breeze, they can buy an actual premium disc for the price of a throwaway beginner disc. Although a little bit of marketing would make it work out even better.
It's possible $12 will become $16, but also maybe not... The purpose of these discs is to clear out their materials and make use of assets (molds) they've invested in. From a business perspective they're probably interested in getting this product sold.
@@cup_and_cone this!! And I sure hope they stay low.... I got 4 of their molds in, and they fly like money. Basically brand new streamline and TSA plastic
@@cup_and_cone Does the plastic go bad after awhile? I have a hard time believing MVP needs to move material when they have MVP/Axiom/Streamline and also TSA and Mint. They just made like 500k worth of discs for Mint last year.
Well damn.. tell me why I wanna buy every mold now of remix disc when I don’t even need them at all? 😂I’m just a mvp die hard. That price point is… on point for remix disc
This is what AI (Bard) had to say, so you can take it with a grain of salt: Chad Richardson's nickname, VoDR, is a portmanteau of his initials, V.O.D.R., which stands for "Very Original Discs Research". This was the name of the company that Chad and his brother, Steve, started in 2005 before it was eventually renamed MVP Disc Sports. Chad is a co-founder of MVP Disc Sports along with his brother. Chad is the engineer for all MVP products, including and especially the beloved GYRO Overmold. He is also a very active member of the disc golf community and is always willing to help out new players.
This happens a lot in all industries, and makes total sense for disc golf to do the same. It’s good info though, I needed a few new inexpensive discs for the bag😂
I'm a "MVP" only thrower. I've had some TSA discs that I've thrown for fun but recently picked up a Mint Freetail because I noticed the Sublime plastic was Plasma, which is my favorite. I fell in love with that disc and slowly picked up every TSA Ethereal or Mint Sublime disc I could and replaced the MVP/Axiom/Streamline equivalent I had in the bag. I knew the plastic was the same but never knew why. I've been frustrated trying to get some of those Ethereal or Sublime discs that are out of stock. Now, thanks to your video, I can sleep knowing I did everything I could.
This is a great video for sure! Only thing I'll say is the torpedo I have is DEFINITELY thinner than the pathfinder. Not sure if I got one different but it is noticably thinner. But I do notice that yeesh you got it right with which molds are matching to other molds at least feel wise. I didn't know the ronin was an apex though so that's good to know! Thanks!
If you like the praxis grab the eldritch they are identical as well. Very different blends than what I’m used to with the mvp family. Some truly great discs on molds that are well proven.
I remember Chad’s enthusiasm on DGR when he fell in love with the game. Hyzer flipping DX Teebirds! I believe the revelation of Wizards having a thinner top with a more dense rim lead us to where we are today with MVP. Great video Bodanza!
Dude thanks for the need out session!!! So interesting! I have a buddy I just got into disc golf and I told him to pick these up cuz theybare great flyers and at such a great price! I wish when I started I knew about this!!! Then I wouldn't have a giant rack filled with 20 - 25 dollars discs haha keep up the great work man
The cool thing is people can buy a disc to fill a slot if they miss a disc, or they want a specific disc, can't find it anywhere, they can get the same essential disc from another brand. Or in this case with Remix, a cheaper version of the same disc.
“And we would have gotten away with it too…If it wasn’t for you and your pesky following” really cool they replied. Glad that so many brands are out there growing because of great companies like mvp. I wonder if LSD has anything like that going on 🤔. Off to find mint discs in plastics I don’t have. Also eternal alphas BEFORE eternal alphas. Crazy
Really interesting topic here. On a side note, regular disc mold are actually three parts. If you look you can see there is one parting line on the outside edge, but also one on the bottom where the wing ends. So there is a top, wing underside and an 'inside' of the discs.
Interesting Magnus! I didn't know but I guess makes sense! And I don't think it's the core, like Chuck says, the Core that Chad was referring to I'm 99% sure is the blank of the disc they get before putting on the overmold, because MVP doesn' thave a parting line, just wing height
Based on your first video, I ran to Amazon and looked at Remix. I got an Eldritch because I'm a fan of the Bullet. Also, the picture under the disc reviews was in Mint's Eternal plastic(proton?). What I got was a disc in Mint's Sublime(Plasma). I was excited because the don't make Bullets in Sublime. I threw it next to a Mason Ford Apex Bullet. Flies the same. Now, I live in Central Texas and will support Mint as my local company. That said, I know I have a cheaper option for, say, water hazards as an example. Plus, it's a little fun to get a mystery "sport" plastic. Again, Mint doesn't make a Sublime Bullet, but now I sort of have one 😂
The spartan and trace i have are drastically different. The wing shape is similar but the spartan is 1cm thinner rim and significantly lower wing height. I could hyzer flip lazer beam the spartan back when my max power was only like 300ft.
This is really interesting. I hope we can get someday a proper deep dive into this topic with confirmed information. Would be especially interested to hear how the companies leasing MVP's molds respond. In the mean time, as I do not like this trend at all, I shall only purchase discs from companies that have their own machines. Just to be on the safe side. Funny how it's the exact same thing with whiskey. So many small whiskey companies getting their alcohol from the same massive distilleries, slapping a new label on the product and coming up with a silly story for their brand. It's all so... cheap.
This also gives some answers to one of my long-time questions: Why Innova has sister brands like Hyzerbomb that never have discs in stock 😁 I used to throw Hyzerbomb and Millennium for a while but had to give up after waiting for restocks that never came. Discmania was about to become another one of these surplus outlets, so they had to start producing their own...
Yep, Discmania was going to be the next surplus outlet, as they were more a side brand Innova sold Disc Though, The Way Millenium was in the 2000's to very early 2010's before they became an outlet for extra plastic. I think that they only have one brand that is being made by the company.
i jumped on the Envy bandwagon since James Conrad's Holy shot and recently built a full MVP bag after Simon's switch, and im having lots of fun with it! great info and very cool how they responded like that, funny that he had to make an account just to respond lol im guessing he wasnt actually trying to hide who he was, considering you have a good following and someone was gonna figure it out eventually. luckily it was someone who's got status in the company coz if this were some new employee or something, im sure theyd be fired hahaha prolly ur most informative video yet lol Thanks Chad!
That IS nuts. Ha! And on Canadian Amazon they're not cheap. They're around $50. Which is expensive compared to what I normally pay for a mid to premium disc ($20-$30). The most I've spent on a single disc is $40. So I will not be checking these out. Lol.
So to summarize: yes. It's good business to minimize waste and maximize margin while allowing us to be responsive to demand without just undercutting ourselves because these are slightly different than the flagship disc you pay the premium for.
