As an old ultimate player who's never really gotten into disc golf... THIS might have been the thing that makes me give it a real chance. Awesome video, Destin. Awesome factory, Brad and Chad!
I got into disc golf after ankle surgery ended my ultimate career (if pick-up games and rec beer leagues counts as a career). It just felt really good to be throwing discs again.
How the discs fly, and in particular, the forces that cause them to roll or "flip" are some of the most confusing concepts to explain to a beginner. Having a video that explains these things in the way that only you can would be incredibly valuable for the disc golf community!
@@Janne_Markus I have some that I still don't understand how to predict/control the roll 😂 I'm mediocre at best lol a video like that would be super awesome and probably way more helpful than I could imagine.

I work in a machine shop as a CNC Setup guy and we have some injection mold machines. Ive been in a good number of plants in my life and I just have to say this manufacturing line is absolutely GORGEOUS. Props to whoever was involved in getting this up and running, it is absolutely incredible
i dont play this sport but... this clean and complete inhouse manufacturing is something north america has been lacking for a very long time. This type of thing isnt happening enough. The fact they do all their own inhouse recycling as well is an absolute bonus. Great video. Made in America. As a Canadian... i love and appreciate.
You should get out there and try it. It’s saved my life. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but my life has been in turmoil for a while, and I’ve been playing for 13 months. Being outside, walking and throwing plastic is my happy place, and there was not much, if any, happiness in my life. It’s the healthy addiction I needed.
that opening line where destin says he wishes to see such organic grassroots grown factories all over america - that is an actual unity ticket right there. no left or right politics, just reasonable, sensible application of sound economic principles which anyone would agree with. including the recycling, which is actually beneficial for the business too, since they cut down on waste. just good ol american ingenuity, coupled with passion, all budding from a community of shared interest.
@@alveolate I hate to rain on anyone's parade but doing this kind of thing in America is only possible in places like Marlette Michigan because there's nothing else there and people are willing to take these low wage jobs. It inevitably always breaks down into left or right politics because factory owners are always resistant to paying factory workers a fair wage.
I was absolutely baffeled by how fast this sport took over here in Estonia. Within 5 years we went from just a few Disk Golf courses to pretty much having full courses in even some of the most rural areas of the country. It literally helped bring life back into areas that people never went before. I stopped playing myself because of a shoulder injury but I loved the simplicity of it and the fact that this could be picked up by almost anyone.
@@smartereveryday, the comment to make a short from the robot footage is a brilliant idea. I would show that in every single manufacturing presentation I give to the high school kids. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
I work in manufacturing, and I absolutely LOVED the moment where the two owners just eagerly, instinctively pointed right at the controller for their whole line. Couldn't just walk over, they just had the magnetic connection to their equipment. Getting a glimpse into all the details of a different process than I'm familiar with was super interesting. Fantastic video!!!
[YOU WANT TO HUG SOMEONE AND YOU DONT KNOW WHY] there is a new golden standard for captioning being set by you and your people Destin. Keep up the good work.
"your speakers are railed, theyre probably still screaming in that field" 🤣 I hadnt had the captions on but I went back because I figured I knew which moment you were talking about, turned them on and CC did not disappoint 🤣
As a mechanical engineer, the physics of the flight is super fascinating. Explaining how the gyroscopic precession causes turn and fade is definitely worth a video on it's own!
Hey Destin. I think it would be really cool for a follow up video if you were to get with one of MVPs professional players and learn the biomechanics of throwing a disc.
@@smartereveryday Simon lizotte would be a great example for this. Also made a video about robots throwing discs. Made another comment about that then I saw this.

I like how they told the story of the 250 ft golf shot. They made it about the golfer, and the shot, without overtly making it about their product, letting the listener make the connection that it was one of their -disks- discs that was used.
Oh my goodness, Destin.....You have no idea how much you just made my day. I am 46 years old and my friends and I have been playing Disc Golf since 1997. Disc golf is such an amazing sport. Just like its ball counterpart, disc golf is so much more than just a sport...it's a social event since most if the time you are not actually throwing your disc but rather walking between your throws which leaves a lot of time for conversation. My friends and I are all subscribers and I think you will find that a majority of disc golfers are fans of engineering, science all things tech. That is why I think you will get a lot of views. There have been videos on RUclips where DG manufacturers have discussed the manufacturing process of discs but nothing this in-depth. I never would have imagined that DG would be the sport it is today. Back in the 90's early 00's, DG was not nearly as popular as it is now. Now, DC has exploded in popularity and you have done your part in helping expose more people to this great sport. Bravo.
As a disc golf professional for over 30 years spending a lot of time playing in Huntsville & Decatur Alabama, this was a phenomenal video showing a great company that has made such an impact in the sport I love. Please keep making more of these videos!
Any time I see a big RUclipsr (but especially the science guys) make a video about disc golf it makes me so happy. The more people that see the holy shot the better. The most electric moment in our sports history.
This is hilarious but I also have to sigh at the memory of a recent new MVP disc I tossed in the bin because the flashing made it too uncomfortable to even grip tightly (and I did a crappy job trying to remove it). Basically, I purchased 3 Trails from 3 different vendors. The one that arrived from Infinite Discs was so bad that I think it somehow bypassed a trimmer machine. The Trails from the other vendors were absolutely perfect. I’m completely flummoxed how that one disc had such crazy excess and very sharp flashing. I’m 53 years old and started playing disc golf in high school with a regular frisbee. I’ve purchased probably over 1,500 or maybe even over 2k discs in my lifetime. I keep a spreadsheet of all currently owned discs (130+ at the moment) broken down into types, flight numbers, and weights. I only mention this to let you know that, yes, I do have lots of experience owning and understanding the feel of different discs, including those that are clearly better manufactured (hello you beautiful Latitude 64 Royal manufacturing process with your exquisite Grand plastic). Anyway, I own lots of MVP discs, love them, and that single Trail was the one and only example of really any significant flashing on one of their discs. Something weird happened with that particular run and it was not good…
@@smartereverydayI don't know if you watched the entirety of that scene from the doc, but I was the director and editor of the project and that CC bit is the most validated I've ever felt in my profession at purveying emotion 😂 absolutely excellent bit 👏👏👏
As a disc golfer. This is not a video I ever expected on this channel and I love it! The PDGA World Championship just finished up and I live close enough to where it was this year and so for this video to drop so close to when the event happened is awesome!
This video was really freaking cool. I work in injection molding/3d printing and love disc golf. I remember seeing the holy shot live on tv and it was insane.
We have a disc golf course over here in west ga. I personally haven’t tried it, but the community really enjoys it and I always see a ton of UWG students out there.
I know I can't tell the distance, but that drive was not something that looked like a novice. Between the form and the placement, he's probably better than is being let on 😎
There are so many disc golf fans smiling as they watch this video, enjoing the enthusiasm of Brad and Chad. Hoping for more as you show off the physics of Anhyzer and Hyzer shots, disc aerodynamics, and throw mechanics.
@@williamstrachan there was a company that called latitude 64 that experimented with dimples on a disc called misslen back in the 2010 area. Was the "fastest" disc produced of it time based on in-house describe flight numbers. Which is a whole other conversation and it isn't really based in facts. Anyways, from my personal experience, that was also echoed by the pros, there was no noticeable difference.
@@williamstrachan Dimples have been tried before, but they've never seemed to work all that well. The disc has a cross sectional shape similar to an airplane wing, where a smooth surface is usually best. Disc designers use very subtle differences in the shape to make discs that turn more sharply or glide farther. While the most important factor in how a disc flies is the skill of the person throwing it, a large part of the fun of the sport is learning how differently molded discs will fly in different situations. It's a very interesting and fun sport!
I love how genuine they feel. A big thanks to MVP Discs for allowing us an insight into how a passion project can turn into something as big as this. As a michigander, I had no idea this place even existed. What a cool story! My idea that I would love to see is a Smarter Every Day special edition disc with a cool give-a-way at the end.
Dustin, the best thing about your channel, and something I didn't realize in the beginning of watching you, is that sometimes, I look at your thumbnail, and read the title, and I think to myself, I don't think that's something I'm interested in, or, no, I don't want to watch that. But then I see that it's your channel, and I remember that there have been many times where I felt that way, and watched it anyway. Those times I believe have been some of the most interesting and most enjoyable videos I've watched. This video was that way for me. While I have no interest, at almost 60 years old, in disc golf, I found this video to be so much more than I ever could have realized. Not only is your production quality spectacular and engaging, the content is always much more than I can imagine from the title. I will continue to watch your content until the day I can't, because of you. YOU make the content enjoyable, engaging, and inspiring, all at the same time. I have so much to learn in life, even at my age, and the thirst is never quenched, thanks in part to you and your channel. Thank you.
What a kind thing to say. Thank you so much. There are many of us that end up putting our mark on a video like this before it's done. Thank you for loving this as much as I do!
So glad I found this vid today what an incredible process! Those machine and the engaging involved is so interesting and mind blowing I loved learning about this today! Now time to go play! Disc golf is so much fun!
The captions on this video are top tier. They not only faithfully transcribe the speech but they also beautifully convey to robotic noises and the feeling from the crowd in that golf shot.
There's something about the "impossible comeback moment" in any competition that I think connects with people on such a deep level that you don't even need to be personally invested in the sport to appreciate it. I've gone disc golfing probably a dozen times, I'm not deep into it by any means, but the crowd reaction told me everything I needed to know.
I saw that clip randomly on Reddit just after it happened. I used to play Frolf when I was younger, so Discgolf has always been at the back of my mind, for decades, but that clip really planted the seed for me to actually get into the sport, which I decided to do this year.
I was much closer to his shot than he was when it went in. I skipped watching hole #17 to get right next to the green for hole #18. The atmosphere was incredible. About halfway through, everyone saw that it was on the correct line, and then when it stuck, the place exploded!
Destin, great video and thanks. One thing that I think needs to be explained is why discs get more "understable" over time. I think the surface roughness increases as the disc gets beat in, which changes where the flow separates...laminar to turbulent, your fave! This obviously would change the lift's torque and thus the gyroscopic precession.
Having played Disc Golf for over 20 years, it brings me immense joy to see the game get so much love and recognition these last few years. Disc Golf is for everyone, it has improved my quality of life and those around me. You couldn't ask for a more joyful and welcoming community to become a part of. Just grab a disc, go to a field, pick your target and throw! Thanks for this Destin :)
As someone currently in education to become a process operator, whose main hobby is disc golf, I find this video super interesting and it's really well done. Might have to show it to my teachers.
I hope you’re planning to do a video on flight characteristics. Disc flight is fascinating and I’d love to see your take on explaining it. I love your channel and disc golf. This video made my day. 😊
I work for one of MVP's suppliers on master-batch colorant. Never thought I'd see something that we make on this channel. The glow in the dark pigments are a pain to work with for our process, but obviously they're worth it for the end product. As for what we call LDR (let-down ratio) - most places will use about 4% colorant to 96% resin or what we call 25:1. We're a very tiny part of the overall process, but obviously very important for customer satisfaction in the appearance of their discs.
As an avid disc golfer it was an absolute treat to see this, and to mention the holy shot in such a way was icing on the cake. Its impossible to watch it even now without getting goosebumps, such a gigantic moment in time.
The best thing about these videos about manufacturing are the super excited and nice people showing how all these things work. Keep it coming, Destin! We love it!
James Conrad is an AWESOME guy. I spent 4 or 5 years with him in Blacksburg and he taught me a bunch about disc golf that I never knew people ever THOUGHT about. He's a monster on the course, but it's also an insane talent that people never knew about 3 years before he won everything. And yet he's still the most humble people I know...even before he lived in a van.
As so many other disc golfers have shared, thank you so much for shining a light on our beloved sport. Disc golf is such a fun way to get outside and the community is awesome.
I love when you find folks as passionate about the way things work as you are. You can see their genuine eagerness to tell you every little detail about how everything works, as they've clearly had their hand in every aspect of building it. Another great video!
You and me, buddy. In the 70s/80s, playing when it was a new activity (just maybe becoming a sport), picking out a notable tree in the distance and using our one and only disc to play. Then, that day of insight when it's realized that Frisbee makes different discs for stability and long throws and you bought your first 'driver', but not yet ready to call it that. Total imaginative fun.
Sooo cool to see this, my favorite creator covering my favorite sport and my favorite manufacturer! I've played disc golf for almost 40 years and I had never gotten this type of insights into the manufacturing process, thank you so much for doing this! There have been several people trying to make a throwing robot to more accurately profile the flight characteristics of a disc, and I frequently thought about how that would be a really good subject for you to cover.
ive only played a few times but man its such an awesome sport! I never knew how exhilarating that shot could have been... the sound of the crowd and everyones reaction; just incredible.
At 4:25, _“MOI”_ gets introduced, but I don’t remember hearing its definition in the video. I’m pretty sure it’s _“moment of inertia,”_ but you might want to toss a note on screen or make a comment in passing. Regards.
16:35 I love that. The coding equivalent would be an if statement you throw in to the beginning of a function to filter out some weird inputs that only sometimes show up and you don't know exactly how or why but you just need them gone.
That whole process in that one cage is gorgeous. Picks up the centre with the little suction cups, pokes any inadvertent extra discs back into the stack, locates the centre onto the other part of the head, then catches the overmoulded disc with the little suction cups, fits the new centre into the mould, then puts the overmoulded disc on the belt... rinse and repeat, all on one arm. It's so clean!
As someone who disc golfs every weekend and just loves the sport in general, and loves your videos, seeing this video pop up was very surprising and made me very happy.
It's true what they say: get someone to talk about something they love and you can listen for a long time. SED proves this with every upload. Thanks for another winner, Destin!
While I'm no safety Pro, I work in IT for construction companies. I'm constantly taking the same all employee training they do, and it's part of everything we do at all levels. I totally love seeing how this place is set up. I loved the basic green vs red strip lights that were alternating colors at the accessible side of the more dangerous arm.
I love disc golf and SmarterEveryDay. This was an awesome collaboration, I love that they showed all of the really cool and clever pieces that they have in place to solve issues in their process. The wiggle on the robot arm, magnets to catch metal shavings, and all of the other pieces that Brad and Chad shared. They seemed very connected to the entire process which was neat to see. I am an automation engineer and seeing the universal language of manufacturing is so awesome so see! I have a unique pleasure of having a job now that lets me help my customers make anything from salsa and sausage, to cars, Lubricants and water treatment. The parts that truly made me feel so seen though are the flicker on the end of the robot and the “wiggle” to make the disk settle! I love my job in manufacturing and automation so much and this whole series has really made me feel more pride and joy in knowing that smarter folks than me enjoy the process as much as I do!
Every time you visit a manufacturing facility, I feel like every person you talk to is violating an NDA that they signed and giving away proprietary business knowledge. At the same time I do notice the digitally concealed text where they didn't want a particular detail being released, so someone Okayed everything. You just seem to have a way of asking a simple straightforward technical question to people who do this everyday that invites them to geek out over it with you, and the rest of the world just happens to also get to see it. Thank you!
Those robot shots were priceless! As a former industrial electrician who worked with robots, I really appreciated that footage. Many blessings to you and your family!!
I'd love to see a video about disc golf baskets! How the chains catch the disc, angles of approach on the way in, why a perfectly placed putt suddenly spits out for no apparent rhyme or reason?!? Yeah, I'd like to see a video on spitouts.
Something I notice you do and try to replicate more. Even when you already know or were introduced to a concept, such as drying the granules (Kodak) you listen as if you never heard about it and let your guide explain. I'm sure it's much more pleasant for your counterpart than interjecting yourself.
Listening is something no one seems to be able to do anymore. Everyone always interrupts to interject their thoughts before they even know what you are talking about.
Just two days ago a friend asked me if I disc golf. I said that I do not, but I have discs. He wants to go play. We have several courses very close by, some of the free to use. Now I'm inspired. Thank you, Destin.

Give it a try! Go with a buddy, it's a good time
I picked it up two months ago and have fallen in love. It feels so good to throw a disc again!
Would love to see a video with physics about flight profiles. Why different disc have different flight profiles, how they design it and test it.
Oddly...it's both more complicated.... and simpler than I expected.
How the discs fly, and in particular, the forces that cause them to roll or "flip" are some of the most confusing concepts to explain to a beginner.
Having a video that explains these things in the way that only you can would be incredibly valuable for the disc golf community!
@@Janne_Markus I have some that I still don't understand how to predict/control the roll 😂
I'm mediocre at best lol a video like that would be super awesome and probably way more helpful than I could imagine.
@@smartereveryday Yeah.. Overstable Vs Understable. Mid range vs distance. Explaining all the numbers on the disk and how they effect flight. Complicated, but simple once you get the hang of it.
Pete Ulibarri, Paul Ulibarri's brother, actually has a great video explaining the physics of nose angle, high speed turn, and low speed fade.
I love how they didn't even mention it was their disc he landed that shot with until you asked. Shows the humility of those guys. I'm checking my discs after I post this. If I don't have an mvp in my bag, I'm putting at least one on order
Agreed. I don't buy discs too often, but next time I do, I'll be sure to be an MVP to show my appreciation. I want a Smarter Every Day stamp!

@@alexrogers777 so, it's been tried elsewhere? examples?

I was absolutely baffeled by how fast this sport took over here in Estonia. Within 5 years we went from just a few Disk Golf courses to pretty much having full courses in even some of the most rural areas of the country.
It literally helped bring life back into areas that people never went before.
I stopped playing myself because of a shoulder injury but I loved the simplicity of it and the fact that this could be picked up by almost anyone.

Yes! Even if it triggered my motion sickness a little bit 😂. Awesome video.

Interesting idea.

Play every day. I love this sport, and this was one of the best breakdowns of how a disc is made. Great video 👍
I like how they told the story of the 250 ft golf shot. They made it about the golfer, and the shot, without overtly making it about their product, letting the listener make the connection that it was one of their -disks- discs that was used.
Disc golfers call that throw "The Holy Shot". I never expected James Conrad to be mentioned on "Smarter Every Day"!
They really should call it The Hole-y Shot
@@cottonkeef5633this name is particularly good when you also know that James Conrad is widely known as "Disc Golf Jesus."
Bravo.

Disk golf is around for 30 years 😮
I love how excited they are to show off the cool technology in their factory instead of just doing a pr/branding thing
It's so cool to see the robot POV, but those beautiful motor sounds make it just perfectly satisfying!
MVP: "This is the flashing trimmer."
Prodigy: "The what now?"
ouch :D
Prodigy discs are a golf disc and steak knife rolled into one unit.
"Ouch" is what you say after throwing a Prodigy disc lol.
Something weird happened with that particular run and it was not good…
Prodigy discs really go after the idea of grip over comfort they really dig in
Literally at a Disc Golf tournament right now about to tee off and I get this notification. Awesome!
Good luck!

I want to know if dimples have been explored in disc golf or... You know, a potted history of different disc types and how they developed and why
I absolutely loved that these guys are so involved that he knew what the elbows on his supply vacuum system were made of. Awesome video!

The captions on this video are top tier. They not only faithfully transcribe the speech but they also beautifully convey to robotic noises and the feeling from the crowd in that golf shot.
Yes, agreed! I have loved the captions on these videos for a long while.
The holy shot clip gives me goosebumps every time and I’m pretty sure it always will. What an incredible moment!
Same. That pop of the crowd cheering when the disc goes in absolutely gives me chills.
Every. Single. Time!
They have their craft figured out so good
Destin, great video and thanks.

At the same time I do notice the digitally concealed text where they didn't want a particular detail being released, so someone Okayed everything.
