Back in the 70’s and 80’s there was a husband and wife team that would put on quick draw shooting performances in and around the Houston area. Part of the show involved strapping the wife to a spinning wheel, surrounded by 6 balloons. The husband would proceed to draw and fire six shots in what sounded like a single shot, hitting all 6 balloons (not the wife). They were absolutely amazing! Does anyone out there remember them, or know who they were? They both wore very elaborate black and white western outfits with silver trim covered in rhinestones. Yeah it makes it look kinda silly when they lean so far back the holster is almost already pointing at the target. Maybe they need like a post to stand against so they cant lean back.

Selly, I myself do know that, but I guess I was thinking of a sort of umbrella term to include SASS as well as Fast Draw. The main thing is to bring home the point that shooting sports are FUN, for just about anyone. I used to teach reluctant adult females how to operate firearms safely, emphasizing the fun aspect of shooting rather than the more serious uses of firearms. There is room for everyone, from SWAT to SASS.
I shoot flintlock rifles and smoothbores and it takes between 45 sec to a minute to load so anything under a minute is fast shooting for me with that said this was so much fun to watch. I love how Bill checked that single action Colt cylinder at the very start. Thats how its done.

My question would be is there an IDPA equivalent that would require you to make the quick draw defensive gun shot on a bad guy silhouette, make that same quick draw but NOT fire on a good guy silhouette? If so, where and when?
Unreal. That must take a boat load of effort. Thank you. You know, I would think that an engraved gun would come out of a holster slower than one smooth and polished. I also wonder if those mouth blown balloons are measured with accuracy. A bigger balloon would stick out further in the target, giving that shooter a minute advantage..IDK...
They were taught by the best fast draw Arvo Ojala, created the Have Gun- Will Travel gun holster for Paladin! Arvo taught the majority of the cowboy shooters! I was proud to know Arvo. He mad a Paladin rig for me!
Do you have any recommendations on fast draw using the "cavalry draw"? I would appreciate any advice you can offer. I am both a history nut and gun aficionado. I've been a black powder reenactor/shooter since the late 1970s. My "personae" has been a "longhunter/frontier rifleman." I am now a "senior." My interest is cowboy action shooting. I've adopted a personae of a late 1860s army scout using a Henry 44-40 rifle and carrying two 1858 New Army .44 Remington revolvers (black powder). I want to use the "cavalry draw," so, I carry the pistols with the barrel facing backwards and down, grips forward. The SASS rules indicate that this carry/draw method ("cavalry draw") is okay. (For authenticity with my character, I'm using the standard Remington 7.5-inch barrel, much longer than usual short-barrel fast draw Colts I've seen used at SASS events.)
I like how he flips open the loading window and then looks at the camera and spins the wheel to make sure the gun was empty lmao. He checked 2 maybe 3 cylinders.
I wish they’d remove the accidental discharge the white bearded guy had when they started explaining the rules and process. That took my thoughts after the half checked cylinder. Shouldn’t put things like that in a video promoting shooting sports in my opinion. Doesn’t make the event look safe and gives critics a mistake to start picking at.
I know how stupid. In 10 yrs. They will be laying on their backs firing at the target. Contestants use to be disqualified if they leaned way back like these individuals are doing.
I was hoping someone would mention Munden in the comments. He could get at least two shots on target quicker than you can snap your fingers. Absolutely incredible and inhuman. And without any silly leaning.
Obviously everyone’s having a great time(ultimately the whole point of any sport ?) but most of the shooters in this Vid are no different to me from the competition shooters you see in the olympics with all counterweights and eye shields and gun straps and the like that get all their shots within millimetres of each other(the same with archery) . The way there leaning back hand already on the pistol totally focused on the speed of the draw , no wonder they can draw and fire in hundreds of a second BUT it looks like the speed has passed the function much like the Olympic target shooting sports . Me personally I found the ‘beginners’ standing upright drawing and almost aiming much more interesting to watch than the ‘champions’ with their micro-second shots much like I find the Olympic type target sports quite boring compared to target shooting with a simple longbow/iron sighted gun . Takes all sorts .👍
"(ultimately the whole point of any sport ?)" Not exactly. that's the whole point of a game, which isn't necessairly competitive. the point of sports is first and formost to compete, tho that can obviously be overlapped by having fun.

Oh snap! The host of American shooter! One of my favorite shows growing up as a kid! Subbed instantly
This is a great event to attend. I live in this little town , and was here when this was filmed. Lotsa fun
I would love to live there

The narrator has the right voice for the right video.
I am glad to have stumbled onto your channel. I love the History of American firearms. I own several BP guns. I have subscribed and liked. Also, instantly liked the host.
I remember watching these on CMT way back when. Saw Jin interview a couple of friends at an IDPA match once as well.
Good times.
- Enjoyed this a lot.
It's crazy how fast they move.
they should make leaning back illegal in this competiton
Yeah, what's the point of calling it quick drawing if you're barely drawing it
My back has pain just watching it. So Im totally sure its a massive load on their muscles and bones - this is a sport. And this is how its done.
How did I just find this channel??? I follow all the firearm channels, but I grew up watching Jim on “Shooting USA”. Man this is so cool to see him. Wish it was on my old crt television but ccommie tube works! I can’t get over hearing his voice again, brings me back!
Cowboy action shooting is a great sport. Fun, inclusive, something for everyone. Even being a spectator is fun
This is quick draw. Cowboy action shooting is a completely different sport.
Love to see the youth shooting. Winning against your mom/ coach must have been great but to win it all wow!
Nice video .. I was entertained watching .. it's nice to see people still gather for some quality community bonding. Looks fun
I love these stage names!
This is probably the most fun gun convention i'd like to be part of
I appreciate that they can get a shot off faster than me and I am definitely no one to mess with. This is an art being kept alive by just being alive.
I shoot flintlock rifles and smoothbores and it takes between 45 sec to a minute to load so anything under a minute is fast shooting for me with that said this was so much fun to watch. I love how Bill checked that single action Colt cylinder at the very start. Thats how its done.
Want to see speed? Jerry Miculek
Well they could do 3 shots per minute with smoothbore muskets, and I've seen demonstrations.
@@redtra236 Yes Sir you are right on target, pun intended. Drilling on loading and firing was so key. as these six gun champs have shown.
This community is great! Just people having fun.
Good family fun. I love it. More families would stick together if they got in something that would bring them all together like this
I like how Jim Scoutten removes his hat and his hair is still in perfect shape.
Even our grandpa's are getting into speedrunning.
Doc Holiday did not do the cheat lean, but these guys and gals are fast, amazing to watch
Very interesting video! I send you thanks from the Czech Republic y'all! :)
Though how fast they are, none of them will ever be better than Bob Munden!
Some of the shooters are leaning so far back, they may as well just lay down and shoot through the bottom of their holsters...
This, I would of liked to see in the REAL WESTERN day shootouts. lol
@@nojustno1216 Did people in the old west shoot fast draw at all?
@@nojustno1216 This is Competitive shooting, it is a lot different than Hollywood western movies. I was told by an old RCMP officer he thought the modern day tactical stances were all "stupid looking" *shrugs*
@@K0sm1cKid only documented to have happened twice. Wild Bill Hickok did it once
My only gripe with CAS is that it's become so far removed from any practical shooting techniques as to almost have become a carnival game.
would be nice to know if you are having a staredown in the saloon or on the old main road
@@virileagitur7403 you ain't gonna lean back like that in real life ready to quick draw on some bad guys
@@virileagitur7403 No, it's trick shooting. I'm not knocking them, it's a skill set, but it's a different skill set from the one used in competition shooting using live ammunition.
Watch some IPSC matches and then compare the techniques to what you see here. Again, I'm not being negative towards CAS shooters. They just have a different skill set, not a bad one.
I agree. The extreme backbenders look ridiculous.
My question would be is there an IDPA equivalent that would require you to make the quick draw defensive gun shot on a bad guy silhouette, make that same quick draw but NOT fire on a good guy silhouette? If so, where and when?
Remember: the farther back you lean, the more pro you are.
Joking aside, this is honestly impressive stuff!
It's stupid and they they didn't shoot like that In the old west😂
Hahah Yeah that is pretty ridiculous actually, but it's such an obscure hobby does anyone really care?
Nah it's the contrary. If you're willing to sacrifice milliseconds to look cool and still do good, that's actual skill
Unreal. That must take a boat load of effort. Thank you.
You know, I would think that an engraved gun would come out of a holster slower than one smooth and polished. I also wonder if those mouth blown balloons are measured with accuracy. A bigger balloon would stick out further in the target,
giving that shooter a minute advantage..IDK...
Many people never knew that Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis Jr were both accomplished fast draw artists
Great video.
Stopped in Fallon once on my way back from Colorado to Oregon. Didn’t think much of it in the middle of the night, I had no idea about this!
This is legit the coolest looking event ever. I want to join!
Saw my first fast draw on Wide World of Sports decades ago. It was demonstrated by an old man who was faster than lightning.
Bob Munden
I like how he flips open the loading window and then looks at the camera and spins the wheel to make sure the gun was empty lmao. He checked 2 maybe 3 cylinders.
Caught that too huh? Lol
Messed me up for the whole video. My inner monologue was, "And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how tragic events happen."

I’m blown away at the speed and accuracy.
Greetings from Canada. Love me some guns and role play. Nice mix lol
This is awesome
i feel like leaning so far back that your gun is basically already horizontal is kinda cheating but wtf do i know
More of Miss Lilly Bell,please!
Looks like so much fun!!! I’m so jealous. If my spine wasn’t too bad I’d be on my way there lol
" Fast misses dont mean a lot in cowboy fast draw" Quick Cal the champion .. true to the word
Interesting. But if Bob Munden were competing. I'd know who I'd bet on. That guy has got to be the best. Insane speed
Yup, and Munden doesn’t do that silly lean back pelvic thrust thing either.
I was hoping someone would mention Munden in the comments. He could get at least two shots on target quicker than you can snap your fingers. Absolutely incredible and inhuman. And without any silly leaning.
@@overbuiltlimited your right about that.
@@jzeke1712 I saw what you were talking about. He shot two balloons, holstered faster than I could blink
"(ultimately the whole point of any sport ?)" Not exactly. that's the whole point of a game, which isn't necessairly competitive. the point of sports is first and formost to compete, tho that can obviously be overlapped by having fun.
thats why if i watch Archery, Instictive Barebow is by far the most fun to watch
1:01...no matter what that barrier is made of or the wax bullets being used, that range setup is just waiting for Alex Baldwin to show up....
