I cant explain how frusterated I get when I "the Catholic Church kept the Bible in Latin so that nobody could read it." And I'm not even Catholic
The only people who could read at all were people who could read and understand Latin. For those who could not read, the Church had churches covered in pictures showing the scenes of the Bible. No one was trying to keep the Bible from the people.
Latin is called "a dead language" not because it isn't used, it's because it can't be added to, or subtracted from. It doesn't change.
Also, Latin has not changed for millennia so the words and interpretation of scripture cannot be misread or altered when different ethnic groups interpret the writings Christ's disciples. Because the apostles.were around during the Roman empire and scribes technically read and wrote in Latin, the words have always remained consistent within the foundation of Christ's Church through St Peter.
Except scriptures weren't translated into latin during the disciples time. It was more than a full century later and Jerome's translation into latin was around 400 years after. So yeah... When older greek manuscripts were found and rediscovered during the reformation era latin was off from the greek manuscripts. Now all modern bibles, catholic and protestant come from the same greek manuscripts. Although catholic church still uses some latin bibles and latin language especially in liturgy and in the academy to study old latin writings by scholars of their time.
no they wrote in greek ... that's why the new testament is in greek ... not latin
@@aitornavarro6597 it is precisely the mandate of pope damasus to st. jerome to translate the canonical books of the bible into latin that has allowed for the crystallization of the canon of the bible
For the same reason several sciences also use Latin.
@@frekigeri4317 Exactly! Latin was the Lingua Franca of scientific literature for centuries.
because it is a dead language, it's meaning does not change. to give you an idea, the lord's prayer in english, any language aside from latin, has changed and evolved over the centuries; but the lord's prayer in latin is static for 2000 years
Pope Francis is restricting and limiting Traditional Latin Mass and communities forgetting its Latin identity and roots.
Actually it was Greek then Latin
It bothers me as well that Vatican II allowed for mass to be celebrated in vernacular languages but personally I have never been to a Catholic Church where the mass was in Latin, the church I go to is in vernacular language with only a few chants in Latin.
In my opinion bibles in the vernacular languages are very good so people can study them on their own.
Great video! Very informative. Are you just a history nerd or do you have some formation?
@@MVicenteLima Thank you very much 🙏🏻 I'm studying history at university, but I've always been a big fan of history and theology.
because they hate the original text in greek.
the roman church is just a descendant from the roman empire.
they kept the language, and the titles (the pope has caesar's titles)
there is no reason to keep it except pride.
Unfortunately because of the language Rome had fallen behind in the early Church where the rest of the early Church used Greek all 4 other Patriarchates as Greek was like English is today an international language. There are words in Greek that do not exist in other languages so if we try to translate we use words close to the meaning but we depart from the true meanings of the words so therefore the meaning is diluted. There are truths in Christianity that are beyond our intellectual comprehension unable to be grasped by the finite mind of man our intellect knows them, is convinced of their reality and testifies to their supernatural existence. Also in translation you loose some of the heart felt spiritual and true meaning that can touch your heart and your spirit.
ALSO THIS CHURCH THAT IS MENTION IS NOT CATHOLIC CHURCH IT IS ROMAN CATHOLIC WICH WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1054 AD AFTER IT LEFT THE ONE HOLY CATHOLIC(not roman) AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH and took the name Roman Catholic and started with Heresies roman inventions and some times untruths to satisfy peoples' questions that have no answers.
@@kyriakosaronis4872 “Roman Catholicism” is Catholicism. The term Roman Catholic was first used a synonym for Catholicism in 1208 ad, 150 years after the east-west schism.
Later it was used as a derogatory term by anglicans, between 1595 and 1605. Those Anglicans wished to call themselves Catholics and referred to actual Catholics as Roman Catholics.
@@frekigeri4317 After the schism Rome took the name Roman Catholic then the other 4 Patriarchates had to take a name to distinguish between the 2 churches and they took the name Orthodox. We can see the Heresies the Roman inventions and in some instances falsehood. The Roman Patriarchate was Catholic just like the other four but after the schism and their misapplication of peter been the Petra where Petra is not peter Petra is the Faith. Also Toman Catholicism has more than 1000 different groups but as long as they send money to the Vatican it is ok?
In my Island of Kerkyra we have the incorrupt Body of Saint Spyridon in his Church on November 12, 1617 AD the roman catholic bishop ana the Venetian governor desired to change the church from Orthodox into a roman catholic but they did not succeeded an explosion occurred and both got killed and many more of their guests that had come from Italy to witness the change. The church still standing today as an Orthodox church.
@@kyriakosaronis4872 lol, you can see the heresies? Who made you the infallible determiner of heresy?
@@frekigeri4317 I have been a Catechist for the past 29years and i have catechized 3,1957 Catechumen coming from roman catholicism and from all different areas of protestant world and yet i do not have one who wanted to return back to their previous so called faith.....
@@kyriakosaronis4872 you think that means something? Joel Osteen “preaches” to 45,000 people every week and they come from various backgrounds as well. 🤣
Just another effort to legitimize the attitude that priests are more important than people in the Catholic Church!
By adopting Latin for the prayers during Mass etc., this kept people in the pews - watching the priests do everything.
Jesus came for all the people of the Earth, not just priests!
Priests exist to assist people to find God
not for people to find priests to find God!
@@leoinsf you know people in Western Europe used to speak Latin in antiquity and early Middle Ages right? They just maintained the tradition.
@@Imperial_Legacy
I don't think people spoke Latin to each other.
Latin is a written language!
In the Mass, Latin is a celebratory language of prayer.
Basically, what is wrong having church in "the language of the people?"
Martin Luther made that change to reach people and stop making Christianity about rank!
Again, a case of priests wanting to "insure they were needed for the salvation of people."
@@leoinsf No, Latin was a real language that people spoke in the Roman Empire. Eventually in the middle ages people were speaking different dialects of Latin that would eventually lead to the formation of modern romance languages like Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Romanian.
I agree with you because I never had mass in Latin, my church mass is in vernacular language so I can’t really say it would be better that it was in Latin. But I definitely agree that the Bible written in modern languages is good so that people can study it on their own. I acknowledge the reformers had good points and wanted to fix the church’s problems.
@@Imperial_Legacy
I am 88 years old and grew up in the 40's serving Mass in Latin. I never questioned this at the time.
Now I see it as another barrier to "a religion of the people."
The journey to God should be one of love, charity, acceptance, not complication!
Charity is the byword for what religion produces, not sitting in a pew and watching ceremonies!
@@leoinsf I totally agree with you! That’s what the journey to God should be about. Although I think preserving Latin is important, the religion is not about preserving Latin, it is about Jesus Christ and living life according to his teachings.
