Yup. It would be great to be in communion with Rome. I’m not sure how that would happen. I don’t think Orthodoxy would ever accept universal jurisdiction and I have a hard time seeing Catholicism giving that up.

@@JhokiOK Please look at the history of how Eastern Catholic Churches came to be. They are not a sign of the Orthodox Church being in union with Rome. At this point they’re mostly not second class citizens in the Catholic Church anymore and most of them have gotten over the coercion used to get many of them to join in the first place.

God uses numerology a lot in the Bible. 7 for example means completion, 3 is used for the Trinity, 6 means incomplete.
73 Books are in the Catholic Bible
66 Books are in the Protestant Bible
and we know what 666 means.....

As a Christian I can give you a couple.
Tobit, an angel teaches sorcery, God doesn't like sorcerers, Revelation 22:15. Besides, you cannot see sorcerers in the side of God and His Son in the whole old testament, but in not biblical book of Tobit.
Purgatory, comes from Platonism and Maccabees union. You cannot see purgatory in Jesus' or any apostles' or the half brothers' of Jesus writings. Catholics need Maccabees for a false doctrine of purgatory in the church, a teaching of Platon. You neither will find any teaching of a purgatory in the rest of the old testament. Money money money.
The same comes with perpetual virginity of the impostor virgin Mary goddess. They need a protogospel of James for that false teaching, never mentioned by any other as could be Paul's and Peter's writings, or Mary sons' with Joseph, James and Judas, half brothers of Jesus.
And on and on.

As a Catholic who specialized in the Lutheran Reformation, I would say that the key point that made Luther distrust these deuterocanonical/apocrifa books was not only historical, but doctrinal as well.
Since some of these books (Macabees 2, for instance) spoke about some things that were a bit Purgatory-ish, Luther stated that these could not be inspired by God since He said (according to Luther's view) a different thing in the New Testament.
I would also take into account that since the fall of Constantinople and the arise of Venice and Spain as major Latin powers, it was common by Germanic priests to condemn any Greco-Latin ("pagan") element from the "true form of Christianity", which some believed it was closer to biblical Judaism.

yup- I think so. Before you do, just look at what church is attacked by today's radicals regardless of their cause, the CATHOLIC church.... Jesus told Peter you are the rock I will build my church, not " the model for all my churches" or " for now Peter until Luther comes along where he will get it right for the coming age" Now the world has 30000 plus Christian churches .... yet the evil one only cares to attack priests/cardinals or radical groups to harm the Catholic church..... step back, look, observe, and don't miss the obvious events. Requires that I adopt an artificial division between the OT and NT in which the NT takes interpretive priority and overrides the meaning of the OT at key, prophetic texts.
Requires I abandon a Standard, consistent historical grammatical hermeneutics and adopt a Christo-typological interpretation of the Bible.
I have to overlook the profound impact Greek Philosophy and allegory had upon Augustine's views of the Bible.
I have to ignore the historical reality that premillenism was believed by and taught by the early church up and until Augustine made it unpopular with the publication of his "City of God.
Requires that I ignore all grammatical indicators that clearly distinguish between the Jewish people and the nation of Israel and the NT church.
I have to believe promises made directly to Jewish Israel of a future salvation and restoration is fulfilled entirely in the NT church.
The NT church is the same as the OT "Israel".
I have to understand Revelation 20 to be a recapitulation that takes me back to to the beginning of the church age rather than than following naturally and chronologically from the events in Revelation 19.

@@carealoo744 Lol! The Catholic Bible doesn't have extra books! Martin Luther removed 7 books from the Catholic Bible, therefore, as beautiful as the King James version is, the Protestant Bible is not complete.

@@carealoo744 I just read in one of the comments that the original King James Version of the Bible was complete. It never occurred to me that it was written before King Henry VIII broke away from the Church. We all learn something every day if we just open our eyes, ears and our hearts.

@@annarodriguez9868 And with those 7 books St. Jerome in the fith century also removed them stating they were good for historical context but not doctrine . Jerome was overruled by the roman Catholic church and the books reinstated. Luther comes along in the 1500's and that is who we all hear about. Prayers for the dead as a doctrine found only in 2 Maccabee's 12 in selected verses devoid of context and most roman Catholics are totally unaware of context that proves Judas as being wrong in chapter 12: Tobit another book that is contradictory to established scripture and yet because it is one of the 7 books rejected by some, is still counted as scripture? What I have found is that the vast majority of believers , whether roman Catholic or denominations , have not read the bible for themselves but are quick to say all the books of the bible are true!!
I recently started reading scripture daily, and as a former protestant, now a catholic convert, I have not taken scripture as seriously as I do now. It took a while to get to where I am, but God has gotten me on the right track

@@djays3232 It is possible. Catholics and protestants serve the same God, believe in the same trinity and Gospel message, and believe in the inerrancy of scripture. They are different approaches to the same religion. I am a protestant but still observe lent, and endorse the idea of confession, and so on. There are things each branch of Christianity could learn from each other. The most important thing, from what I understand, is that we focus most on the Good News which unites us
If only all protestants were like you, all this division is tiring..

My pastor said that we Catholic are too proud about our dogma, we often forgot about our bible. We always said that our bible is the most complete but dont give a care to read it. Thanks for reminding us Pater. 🤗
You're pastor is right. We also give lots of focus to the Father and the son(with great and obvious reason), but little in understanding of the holy spirit and how it connects in the Trinity.
How can we forgot our Bible when we read it every holy day at mass all over the world, in so many different languages?

Catholicism predates printing and developed visual means (architecture, mosaics, stained glass, statues, paintings, rosary beads, crucifixes, holy medals) to get its message across
I'm ethiopian orthodox and I think we have like 81 books... I was so confused as to why but now I sort of understand so thank you. Also, growing up in the west I find I've adopted the legalistic mindset so sometimes I get a little frustrated with orthodoxy but other times it's like a breath of fresh air lol.

The RCC's view of the church is completely at odds with the NT. It is the Scripture, and it alone, that is the guide for all Christians. The church on earth must submit to the Scriptures.
In addition , the idea that the RCC is the church that Christ setup, and that all believers must submit to it, is also rejected in the Scriptures in the strongest possible manner.
The RCC bears no resemblance to the church which is portrayed in the NT. Their view is only obtainable if one approaches the Scriptures with such rigid theological misconceptions that they must “mis-interpret” these verses to conform it to their own theological system.
Ong, If you are absolutely commit yourself to the LITERAL, GRAMMATICAL, HISTORICAL HERMENEUTIC you will be able to understand the "Full Counsel of God" and come to the conclusion the church is not the RCC.
KEY POINT: Literal, grammatical, historical hermeneutic is the same approach used in ordinary communication. In fact American jurisprudence rests upon this interpretive approach.
The dictionary defines literal interpretation that is "based on the actual words in their ordinary meaning...not beyond the facts.
In addition, it should be noted in passing that literal interpretation has been unfairly criticised on the basis that it adheres to a wooden, inflexible literalism that fails to allow for types, symbols, figures of speech and genre distinctions. Literalism does not preclude or exclude correct understanding of types, illustrations, apocalypses, and other genres within the basic framework of literal interpretation.
It is not too difficult to account for the widespread approval of the spiritualizing or allegorizing method adopted by many conservative theologians as well as liberal and ROMAN CATHOLIC expositors. Fundamentally its charm lies in its flexibility. The interpreter can change the literal and grammatical sense of Scripture to make it coincide with it own system of interpretation.

@@ronaller5209 I disagree. It is not scripture alone that is the guide for all Christians. It is *God* that should be the guide for all Christians. God gave us scripture, but He also gave us a Church, which is the "pillar of Truth".

...most of the Hebrew text of Sirach has been uncovered in the Cairo Geniza, at Masada, and in three Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. 2QSir designates Sirach from Cave 2 at Qumran, 11QPsª designates a scroll from Cave 11, which contained the canticle from Sirach Chapter 51:13-30, but which was found in the Psalms scroll! As with all ancient texts discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Hebrew Scripture was in consonantal text only. A manuscript with six chapters of Sirach was found at Masada. Survivors following the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD fled to Masada, a fortress on a mountain plateau built by Herod near the Dead Sea.
The consonant-texts are thus not Masoretic, are Hebrew predating it, and otherwise known as Square Hebrew or Aramaic Square Hebrew.

Secondly, the DSS contains many scrolls of the Old Testament, some partial and some more complete, some portions written in Paleo Hebrew, more from the Septuagint, and more from Square Hebrew (i.e., a Hebrew minus diacritic markings, predating, and distinct from Masoretic Hebrew).
In the overwhelming majority of cases where the LXX and the MT disagree, the Square Hebrew in the Dead Sea Scrolls agrees with the LXX, and the same also when the Square Hebrew disagrees with the MT, the LXX agress with the Square Hebrew, not the MT. I needed to edit that.

Jewish Christian here, and I find this a very interesting topic since I kind of feel like a bit of an outsider on this one. I see both sides and ultimately side with no one. I appreciate both arguments but I grew up with the tradition that the scriptures are a library of different books and that each book has a different purpose. Not all the books have equal weight, but they are all important. From what I can see, the books Protestants remove does nothing in the grand scheme of things to change the meaning of the scriptures, but the outright disdain for the removed books is worrying from some denominations. Not that there isn’t problems in every denomination and every branch of the church, but we can get into that fun topic of conversation at a later time. Overall I find that the one translation to rule them all tendencies to be much more of a problem than the Luther’s editing choices.
For the record, my scriptures does contain all the books Luther didn’t like but I also have almost every translation available for the reason that I don’t speak Greek (working on it) so I like my bookshelf to be overburdened with information.

@@gina5692 they can be called things like Messianic or apostolic. Mainly they keep and adhere to Hebrew traditions while acknowledging Jesus Christ as Messiah.
The reason many Christians aren’t expected to adhere to these traditions is because most of us are gentiles.

That is of course unless you’re a Catholic who bought Bishop Barron’s Word on Fire edition, then it’s understandable why it doesn’t look used because you want to preserve the fact it looks like a cathedral made into a book.
I may not understand your point completely. But I'd rather see a Bible with wear and tear because it's being used. Than one that's looks nice and isn't being used
I have Bishop Barrons Word on Fire edition. Absolutely beautiful. What strikes me most is that it provokes me to delve deeper into scripture than I ever have before. Kudos to Word on Fire! Wish I had bought the leather edition. I recommend it to Catholics and Protestants alike. Amazing.

why do people even take notice of a bible written thousands of years ago, that has been translated numerous times? It’s all utter nonsense
@@ZackKcaz Because newer translations have often come from the oldest versions we have available to us? Most versions are not as innumerably translated prior to publication as the KJV and Biblical scholars heavily emphasize early translations and interpretations for the purpose of understanding the original meaning.
It took me a few minutes to figure out what you meant when you said that Luther's exclusion of books "doomed the reformation." (Full disclosure, I'm a Protestant, grew up Lutheran and went to a Lutheran college, now go to a non-denominational church with my wife but still have a lot of connection to the Lutheran church). Because I viewed the Reformation as quite successful, given that the Protestant denominations haven't died out. However, after thinking about it more, the goal of Luther's reformation was not to split from the Roman Catholic church, but to reform it from within - and that was the failure of it. Thanks for the video - although I studied some of the deuterocanonichal books in college, I don't remember much about them. I've read the whole Protestant Bible, but I would be really interested in reading the additional books in the Catholic Bible (I'm making great pains not to say that one is correct or incorrect).
Try reading the Ethiopian Orthodox canon if you want to get the full-blown largest Christian canon (even the NT is larger).

I think Fr Casey saying that the Reformation was doomed because the Protestant denomination keeps splintering to a point that we now have myriads of branches within the reformed churches alone.
The "additional" books were the books subtracted from the Bible to suit Luther.
My teachers taught me when I was young (in a Catholic school) to never write or scribble in the Bible. We shouldn’t fold its pages or tear them apart. I always feel like something’s wrong when I see how Protestants use to take notes on the Bible’s pages.

I respectfully disagree. I am Catholic and I highlight and make notes in my Bible. It has really helped in my understanding. I owned my Bible for about 25 years before the Holy Spirit pushed me to read it in it’s entirety. Before then it was pristine and sat on a shelf, now it’s dog eared and my husband has had to glue whole sections back in for me. If I had a house fire it is one of the things I would grab because I love it so much. I was one of those Catholics that would never have dreamed of writing in a Bible but now I see things differently.
It really depends on the Bible. I would never write in my Luther Bible I got for Confirmation class, the paper is just too thin. But there are study Bibles with wider sides and thicker paper especially created for note-taking.

@@adrianasoares8549 Lutherans have Confirmation and Confirmation class. Catholics actually use the term Firmung in my language. It's quite funny that in English both are Confirmation.
One interesting thing I've found is that the message is the same one, no matter if you read the Protestant 66 books or the longer Catholic version. I've read both through. I always loved the stories of the Maccabees, however. Removal of the books didn't change the message, for me.
The Messege of the OT is to lead us and guide us to Christ the Messiah; meanwhile, NT is telling us more of Christ... the MESSEGE of both OT & NT, should we embrace which is to KNOW and ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST and Apart from HIM there is no SALVATION... (ACTS 4:12, JOHN 1:11-13, 1 JOHN 1:1-3, 5:11-13)

@Yusuf Ahmed Do not worry. It's only men that deal with religion. People get caught up in Jew or non-jew. Look at the people who had a relationship before Jacob. Adam, Abel, Seth, Enoch, Noah, Shem, Japheth, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac. It wasn't until Jacob came along and name was changed to Israel. Does that change the previous people's relationship with God? So whether a person is born a Jew or converts to Judaism has nothing to do with it. Muslims say Abraham offered Ishmael the Jews say Isaac. The point being God didn't stop the knife from His own Son.
In the beginning God made clothes for Adam and Eve. He did this by a sacrifice of His creation. ( The Bible just says animal skin). The point being that mankind needed a sacrifice.
The Jews just use the Old Testament. The Muslim the Quran. The Christian uses the Old Testament and the New Testament. Although I am not familiar with the Quran I did look something up:
“He formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord; then blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (Al Qur’an 40:64)
The question is always asked, Why did God create? Although God doesn't need a house, was it a place to dwell?

Here is the hypocrisy. Ask any single Muslim or Jew and they will say they are one person. Ask what happens after they die they both are buried and both go to heaven. What you are claiming is that Christians say there are 3 God's. This is false teaching. Just like you are not 2 people.
Allah gave Moses the Torah but men changed it? Then are you saying God is weak? He cannot protect His words? The problem is you run into some disturbing truths in the Bible. So are you saying just the Torah what Moses wrote? What about what the prophets writings? Are they corrupt also? It's neither all or nothing. Muhammad didn't write the Quran. He couldn't read or write so how sure of you of its accuracy? Muhammad could have said one thing but others wrote something else down. @Yusuf Ahmed What about the Chinese word for God, Shang Di? This means The Most High God. Is the God of Shang Di the same as Allah? Old China worshipped 1 God and thus they called Him The Most High God. They have writings that confirm the garden of Eden and the migration after the tower of Babel. It's the oldest writings own of man. Yes it predates Muhammad and Moses.
“Their Bible actually looks like it’s been used” made me laugh! There’s one Catholic Church in my town(I live in Mississippi and my denomination is Presbyterian) and I have friend that goes to it. One time when we did a church event at my high school and once she saw my Bible her eyes widened. “You write in your Bible!?” “Yeah, do you not?”😂

Also I have two Bibles, one for study and another that my church gifts seniors for guidance when we go to college. The second is for when I’m just reading for advice so I’m not studying the verses.

I am not Catholic but have always wondered why Catholic people pray to Mary. Our Bible says says the only way to heaven (or God) is through Jesus Christ. Jesus intercedes for us.

Honestly it's even harder to talk about the "Deuterocanons" in my country because our translated Bible is produced with a collaboration with the Protestants, so our own Catholic Bible has the Deuterocanonicals seperated from the OT, as if, implying that these books are not the same level as the others in OT. Fascinating! As a protestant and former theology student I'm ashamed to say I never knew this about the Apocrypha before. It is making me want to read it now. However, also speaking as a protestant and former theology student I will always go back to earliest sources to test church teaching and traditions. It is perfectly possible that an error has been repeated for 1000 years if people have felt spiritually bound to accept it.
The early church fathers have over 270 counts of support for the deuterocanonical books, and around 5 dissenting opinions.
Many local councils and bishops confirmed that canon, very early.

It doesn't matter how many times you read your history books or dig those ancient cities, the people who were there would stay more knowledgeable than us about the actual events and people at that time. The people who were there with Jesus, who was following him, who was listening and talk to him would know more of what he wants us to do than Bible scholars no matter how genius think they are. The Bible didn't even existed centuries after his death.
Many older Lutheran churches used Bibles that included the "Apocryphal" books, especially those written in German. I have the old English altar Bible from a former church that has them included.
In recent years, the LCMS has released a new version of them complete with Luther's commentary on each book...

Actually the earliest Protestant bibles contained the deutero-canonical books. For example Luther’s German translation contained them and later translations into English also contained them. These books were not removed. They were considered useful but sub-canonical which is the view also held by Jerome who created the Latin Vulgate and the view held by Pope Gregory the Great (died 604AD). The canon as Rome understands it today was not formally defined until the Council of Trent (16th century) and included the deutero-canonical books. This Council declared that anyone who disagreed with them on the canon was accursed by God which I guess included Pope Gregory. Prior to Trent there were differing views within the Roman Church. Some Protestant translations today contain the Deuteronomy-canonical books but solely for their usefulness.
Anglicans have 80. 14 Apocryphal books, which we don't consider canonical, but do consider them worthy for instruction. I'm glad that we at least include them under the label of Apocrypha rather than leave them out like some Protestant churches.

Thanks Father. You explain a difficult topic very succinctly. I’d have to rewind it many times to take in its complexity. One of my best friends is an evangelical Protestant, originally from Belfast but now living in my part of Ireland. As well as being a great friend, he is also a fascination because he is the first really believing Protestant that I have gotten to know. Ireland unfortunately has become incredibly secular, so while most people are nominally Catholic, they don’t really believe in anything, therefore they fall for everything. I have no desire to trap him, or try to win arguments, he’s a smart dude. He knows and loves the Lord. I would love for him to know the real intimacy of the Lord in the Eucharist. I know that in Heaven he will be kicking himself. But I know that I’ll be kicking myself too when I see how faulty my trust in that same Lord was too.

If I remember correctly, according to Alister McGrath's "In the Beginning", early English printers of the King James Bible dropped the Apocrypha (those 7 extra books) as a money saving effort. There were no major complaints, so they kept doing it.
Even though I'm not religious, I did find McGrath's book (the storey behind the production of the KJV) a fascinating read.
That makes for a fun anecdote, but it's not historically accurate (in that, it reminds me of "fornication under consent of the king").

Also Luther and the first generation of reformers didn't just remove the Duterocanonal books but placed them in an appendix and called them Apocrypha. It was latter Protestants who removed them outright.
you can still get modern versions of Luther's translations with Apocrypha, and they are actually between the Old and New Testament. But I don't know whether there are similar versions for English Bibles

One quick point.
Apocrypha means "hidden".
The fact is those seven books were never hidden, they were always known As part of the Septuagint used by Jesus and His Apostles.
The first official Canon decided and decreed by Pope Damasus at the Council of Rome of 382AD included the Septuagint with its 46 books. Today, we still have 46 books in our Old Testament together with the 27 books of the New Testament.

Luther was following the example of St Jerome, who included the Apocrypha at the end of his translation of the Old Testament into Latin. These books have been "second canon" or deuterocanonical (see how that works?) in the west for about 1500 years.

This was very good short video. Though there are some more in-depth takes on the how OT canon developed among the Israelites and later Judeans, and then the survivors of the Second Temple's destruction as compared with early Christianity, I found the explanations for the various Eastern canons to be enlightening. I sort of expected this to be the case where the East tends to be far more reserved with regard to dogmatically defining things as well as the idea of partial inspiration among SOME of the extra-biblical texts. 4th Maccabees is an excellent book that lends itself well in this category, especially being something of a commentary on 2nd Maccabees. I think that within Protestantism, especially the further away one moves from some of the original founders, it gets more legalistic due to the emphasis of Sola Scriptura. If that's the only source of supreme authority in which to bind the various factions of Protestantism together to ensure some semblance of orthodox cohesion, then you bet your rosary beads that they're going to need a definitive canon to work from. What's one to do in a debate on theology when people are coming at it from all kinds of extrabiblical sources, some of which are outright heretical? In that regard I can appreciate the dilemma that the more conservative Protestant communities find themselves in.
One small thing on the Duterocanon. Much of the original Hebrew for Sirach and Tobit were found at Qumran among the Dead Sea Scrolls.
One small thing but of gigantic significance. And another immeasurable significance is that the Dutercannocials were referenced from and quoted by Jesus & the Divinely Inspired apostles so the Dutercannocials are required in order to understand some of the OT references made by Jesus and the NT writers. These Books are God Inspired.

Question: why wasnt there a Reformation in the Eastern Church? Any thoughts? I always felt like it was the lack of legalism in the East.
The East actually do have reformations it's just that it's not as wide spread as in the west. Reformations in the east are more localised and occur usually within just one particular church rather than the whole of the orthodox Church and plus with the already small population of the orthodox churches these reformed churches are relatively even smaller and are thus unknown and overshadowed by the big reformed churches of the west. One example is the reformed Church known as true orthodoxy which was the result of the reformation of the Russian orthodox Church particularly and not as a Reformation of the orthodox Church as a whole hence its localisation and unknown popularity
The grass isn't greener on the other side. The East doesn't just have the Eastern orthodox but also the oriental orthodox. Both are not in communion due to conflicting theologies. Also, a schism happened between Constantinople and Moscow patriarchates.

Further more prior to this there was another schism about 20 years earlier during the counsil of ephesus between the Persian Christians (now churches of the East not to be confused with Eastern Orthodox) and the then pentarchy(now the miaphysite Christians (oriental orthodox) and the chalcedonian Christians (now eastern orthodox and western Catholic)
Briefly to say, here we're talking about the reformations that occurred after the east-west split beginning from the 16th century's protestat reformations onwards in the west resulting in the protestat factions and in the east these lesser known somewhat-protestant factions
I think that is because Eastern churches are authonomous to the extend that even the Constantinople patriarch is equal to, let's say, the Bulgarian one (though he likes to think himself above all other, that's not the case). So, lacking a single authority such as the pope there cannot be a full Reformation. Besides, as I can recall Luther considered the possibility to turn the Germans towards Orthodoxy but couldn't because of the problems it had at the moment, I.e. most of the Orthodox world was under Ottoman rule.
The Eastern Church had been mostly decimated by Islam. I honestly believe their problems were much bigger that their leadership selling indulgences.
I enjoy reading the Book of Tobit. Archangel Raphael is a part of the story. And a story it is. It’s entertaining and clever, and teaches a lesson about helping others, not giving up, knowing our guardian angels are with us, and trusting in God.
Dear Fr. Casey,
A bit confused about a point you make regarding the masoretic text.
Although the work of the masoretes was completed in the 10th century, which is later than the completion of the Septuagint, in my understanding, their work consisted mainly of creating a system of vowelization and cantillation markings to establish a visual coding system to accompany the received oral tradition of the proper phonetic and syntactic understanding/rendering/reading of the preexisting (consonantal) written Hebrew text.
However, the "unvowelized" text has been transmitted from scribe to scribe in an unbroken chain since first committed to writing by each prospective prophet and/or scribe, beginning with Moses.
So, although the Masoretic version of the five books of Moses with niqqud (vowel points) and cantillation markings appeared first in the 10th century in what has become known as the Aleppo Codex, the version read every week from Torah scrolls in synagogues all over the world is the same unvowelized and unmarked version that Moses first wrote 13 copies of (one to be place on the Ark of the Covenant and one for each of the twelve tribes) 3,374 year's ago.
In fact, this "unmarked" or "non-notated" version is the only one it is kosher to read from publicly, so a "ba'al koré" (Torah reader) must do his homework... with the masoretic reminders or otherwise... before reading from the scroll itself if his reading is to be acceptable.
(i know personally because i've filled in on occasion to read from the Torah, and a lack of proper preparation beforehand can lead to painful mistakes, embarrassing pauses and loss of the privelege of being called upon to be ba'al korê again.
On the other hand, most Yemenite Jews are so well versed in reading the Torah by a young age, that in many communities, each man called up can read his own portion without the help of a "ba'al koré" from the age of his bar mitzvah at 13... often, i've heard, from oral training from the scroll alone with a competent adult without recourse to the written notes of the masoretic text)
Strictly speaking, the term Septuagint most accurately applies only to the translation made of the 5 books of Moses for King Ptolemy by the 70 Jewish sages. The rest of the Hebrew Bible and other writings which were translated into Greek afterwards can't really be called the Septuagint in my understanding because, although written in Greek, they were:
1) translated much later
2) not written by the same Jewish sages
3) (and are) the subject of doubt as regards the authenticity and canonicity of content within the Jewish community of its time period

Jerome, the originally ordain translator of the Bible literally noted that the extra books of the catholic Bible were not Canon. It wasnt until the council of Trent that those books were added.
Athelanasius even said books like tobit and judith are not canon. Specifically. The man you cite openly said not to include those books in the canon.
Finally, neither Jesus nor the other Jews make mention of those other texts as canon. Meaning in addition to Luther being mistaken, Jesus would have been as well in that line of reasoning.

Jerome did initially write this. He later completely rescinded it after the Councils of Rome and Carthage. He said he completely accepted the authority these councils came to.

Yes they do, Paul quite frequently quotes from them a lot. But to play Devil's advocate if Jesus never mentions them, he also never mentions:

Ruth
Ezra
Esther
Ecclesiates
Song of Solomon
Lamentations
Obadiah
Zephaniah

@@Cklert the point about Athanasius is that you can’t just say that the Roman Catholic canon was some clear choice for centuries when it was absolutely not. Athanasius doesn’t need to have the Protestant canon to prove my point. The point is that a debate was present for a very very long time. And the apocrypha was always up at the top of the most debated books. That is, at the very least, undeniable.
The fact that many weren’t sure is probably why the Appcrypha was included in many Bible but with annotations specifically calling those books deutero canonical or apocryphal.

The Septuagint (LXX) and Dead Sea Scroll 11Q5 have Psalm 151, which is lacking in the Masoretic Text (MT)
