One thing I learned from investing more time into reading the Bible is that a lot of what is said in mass is straight out of the Bible. It goes to show how beautifully intertwined our tradition is with scripture.
That's how Dr Scott Hahn became Catholic. It went to mass to disprove Catholic teaching, and was impressed by how each aspect of the mass had scriptural roots.
Exactly. Everything in the Mass is straight from the Bible. Including the fact that the Eucharist IS Christ. It doesn't memorialize him it it IS his body, blood, soul and Divinity.
I would suggest that you go to a priest and ask them so that your question will be answered clearly. I am also a Catholic but I don't understand, I have so many why like you, but I discovered the answer when I consistently go to mass and participate, and I eventually get the answer. But if you want to know the direct answer, then find time to talk to a priest. Why the priest, because they studied,research in so many years than us. members.

I’m a Protestant here in Singapore, but I love your videos. I have always felt that, from both sides, many of us don’t read our bible enough and hence, it leads to a miscommunication from both sides when talking about doctrines. I am not catholic but have found this particular video interesting and enlightening. It has answered many questions I have had. My nephew recently converted to Catholicism and I want to understand so I can have conversations with him. What I have found is the teachings of my church and of the Catholic Church differ very little. Thank you for the wonderful videos

When I met my Catholic husband and for the first time studied what is really taught, I had to become Catholic. Charles M L the thing about Catholicism is that there are rarely clear “proof text” verses for doctrines. The point is to take the Bible as a whole. For example, take teaching Faith + works, or denouncing “faith alone.” It’s taking “for by grace are you saved through faith” and putting it with “faith without works is dead” and affirming that both are true. Then putting it with realizing that Jesus was asked several times how to enter the kingdom of heaven and he didn’t say simply, “believe in me.” He told people specifically and individually what they had to DO. So I’ll say the Bible as a whole made me Catholic, no specific scriptures.

Yes I felt the same way. I was a protestant for about 10 years and I was a Catholic before that. I thought the Catholic Church was too strict. That’s why I went to becoming a protestant. Now I’ve returned back to the Catholic Church and I’m in Sacrament classes right now.
40,000 Protestant denomination, all founded by MEN. All preach Bible alone. But they all read the same book differently. Christ founded one Church, not a movement.

She is the Mother of Jesus, our Lord and deserves our respect. 2. Her role in our salvation is foretold in Genesis 3:15 when God told the Devil And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." She is the only human being whom God has chosen for His plan to save the fallen human race. God could have forgiven the Human race but He chose Mary out of His own free will to be part of His salvific plan for us. 3. As Jesus is the King of Kings, Mother Mary is the Queen Mother. God killed Uzzah in 2 Sam 6:6 to 7 for touching the Ark of the Old Covenant : When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God. Despite doing a good deed by stabilising a falling Ark, Uzzah was deemed unworthy and to have defile the Ark. The Ark of the old Covenant carried the Word of God in stone. Mother Mary carried the Word of God in flesh. She is thus sinless as she had to carried the Living Word of God in her womb for 9 months. Uzzah was struck dead by a mere touch. What's more 9 months of pregnancy? Thus we honour Mother Mary for carrying the Living Word of God. The sacredness and holiness of the Old Ark was evident by Uzzah's slaying, what's more the New Ark which is carrying Jesus. 5. Jesus the King of Kings bestowed Queenship on His mother Rev 12 :1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. This woman is Mary because she is in heaven where God is. The only human being God will allow Queenship in heaven is Jesus's mother - the Queen Mother of the King of Kings. This woman is not the Church as some Protestants claim because in subsequent verses.Rev 12 : 2 to 5 this woman gave birth to a son which will rule all nations and whom the devil wanted to harm but couldn't. The only human that can stand up to the devil is Jesus. REV 12 : 2 to 5 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. We honour Mother Mary because we are grateful to her for saying Yes to God, when she was still an unmarried woman but had to bear Jesus, thereby being instrumental in the human race's salvation. 7. We honour Mother Mary because she was obedient to God and is our model of ideal discipleship. She didn't ask for God's detail operation plan, what's going to happen to her when she is found pregnant in old conservative Jewish society, how to answer to Joseph when he found out she is pregnant before their marriage, how is Mary going to live on financially if Joseph divorce her, what role is her son going to undertake etc. Nothing. No details needed. No assurances needed. Just a simple yes to God. And God is pleased with faithful disciples just as He is pleased with Abraham for his faithfulness. For these reasons, Mother Mary deserves our honour - just as how the Early Church honours her for 1500 years till the Reformation. The Orthodox Christians who broke away from the Catholic Church honours Mother Mary. Martin Luther, the Father of the Protestant Reformation loves Mother Mary, honours her and prays the rosary. The veneration of Mary is inscribed in the very depths of the human heart. (Sermon, September 1, 1522). [She is the] highest woman and the noblest gem in Christianity after Christ. ..She is nobility, wisdom, and holiness personified. We can never honor her enough. Still honor and praise must be given to her in such a way as to injure neither Christ nor the Scriptures. (Sermon, Christmas, 1531). No woman is like you. You are more than Eve or Sarah, blessed above all nobility, wisdom, and sanctity. (Sermon, Feast of the Visitation. 1537). One should honor Mary as she herself wished and as she expressed it in the Magnificat. She praised God for his deeds. How then can we praise her? @@jeremiahong248 Honoring Mary is no different from worshipping another God in the eyes of God. Our dictionaries and definitions mean nothing compared to God. Deut 5:8 should make that clear, which is btw the verse not found in the RC Ten Commandments because you took it out to circumvent having statues and prayer beads, praying to saints and Mary, and kissing Pope rings. We should pray to, glorify, honor, venerate, worship, and all other synonyms thereof the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and nobody else, not even popes (Acts 12:22-23). Edit: Your sources on Vatican documents aren't Scripture and therefore invalid (Acts 5:29, Gal 1:8, 2 Tim 3:16-17).
Exactly. So many protrstants say we resacrifice Christ, no, it is that same sacrifice he made in Calvary. God transcends all time, and so his sacrifice is all bounding, and we partake in his flesh and blood OF that sacrifice. Addition: I also hear many Roman rite Catholics don't believe in it being the body and the blood, and that makes me sad, we need to reinforce this doctrine in the church, and make it known more and more, that it is not a symbol, it is the literal body and blood of our Lord.
@@withlove_eya There are many Catholics that don't know that Jesus is truly present in the Eucarist, and this is pretty sad but is mostly because of bad cathechisis and a lack of knowledge, rather than active disbelief.

This came at a perfect time as I have been recently attacked because of my faith in the Catholic church and surprisingly these were all the questions/arguments that we were discussing! Admittedly, even though I have gone to Catholic School, I am not fully versed and don't know everything in the bible, but that doesn't mean that my faith in God and my love for him is any less. With you pointing out all these wonderful passages, I feel that I have been given an invaluable gift and know how exactly I should respond to them.

Brilliant as usual. I think we Catholics were discouraged from reading the bible because we would misinterpret it. Given that the early church founders had the most scholarly people who knew all the nuances of tradition and cultures from the time of Jesus and going way back before. These scholars put the whole bible together assuming there was knowledge of the nuances. If we read the bible without the nuances and subtleties taken into account we move with an accumulated error diverging away from what the original writings were. We Catholics need to be guided and tutored into how to read and interpret the bible. Otherwise we just become like Martin Luther. I go online to official Catholic authorities to find out how to interpret our faith. This channel is brilliant for that.
This is one of the best and most concise apologetic overviews of these teachings that I've found so far! Great work, Fr. Casey! Although it might be a little tough to justify purgatory to a Protestant using 2nd Maccabees, since they don't believe it is canonical. Personally, I tend to use 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 to talk about that teaching. Thanks for the work you're doing!
Maccabees is not even in the Torah. It says nothing about Jesus, there is nothing to prove there is a purgatory. First Corinthians is not talking about any purgatory or works after we are dead. Paul is talking about living people. It says the works we do now will last forever. It has nothing to do with a place for the dead. You cannot pray for the dead or pay money to get people out of hell. There is one life and one death. The life we have now will either send us to heaven or hell. You must make Jesus your Lord and Savior. He and He alone is your Savior. It has nothing to do with baptism or works.
@@bcalvert321 Maccabees could not be in the Torah, as that is made up of the five Books of Moses only. It is not included in the Tanakh (the canonized Old Testament/Hebrew scriptures), which I think is what you were referring to (maybe?). Many scholars believe this is due to how late it was written (the events in Maccabees took place around 200-150 years before Christ’s birth), as the rabbis already had a pretty solid list of books they felt should constitute the Tanakh when the book of Maccabees was written. Maccabees also wouldn’t mention Jesus as you mentioned because, once again, it was written well before His birth. Neither of these points mean that the book(s) of Maccabees aren’t important or contain value. In John chapter 10, Jesus makes sure He is in Jerusalem to celebrate “the festival of dedication”. This festival is what we know as Hanukkah (“Hanukkah” means “dedication”). Guess where the story of the miracle of Hanukkah is recorded… The book of Maccabees! So Jesus certainly didn’t throw out the story as just non-canonical trash, neither did all the other Jews of His time. So maybe there is more value to this book than you’ve considered? Maybe there are tons of things that would be good for us to consider with a more open mind, hoping to grow in our knowledge and walk with The Lord? Blessings!
Since they are not mentioned anywhere except in their own books then It is not scripturally important. To the Jews, it is important because it was historically important. It talks about the razing of the Temple. The Jews of Jesus' time never prayed to the dead or for the dead. Again Jesus never mentioned the book but it was just a history story. The only open mind we need are to the scriptures we know are important and those of the NT.

The book of Jude quotes the book of Enoch (without giving it the citation you seem to feel is so necessary for authenticity) as an authoritative source of spiritual reality and history. Things aren’t as simple and Protestant as you might have believed! 😲 If Jude, Christ’s brother, considered this book authoritative… maybe you’re a bad Protestant for disregarding it? Maccabees wasn’t mentioned in the OT because it was written (pretty much, except for the finalized book of Daniel) after the books of the OT, so it couldn’t be mentioned. History is linear, ideally. The New Testament didn’t mention Maccabees specifically (though 2nd temple Jews - like Jesus - were celebrating Hanukkah) because… who knows? There are tons of reasons why this might be the case. Why are Naaman or the thief on the cross only mentioned in one tiny piece of scripture? Ehud? Balaam? Lastly, you do know that the Maccabees didn’t actually name their book, right? Our modern Bible uses descriptive names about subjects or audiences of books, as has always been done. All the judges didn’t sit around and write Judges, Romans didn’t write… you get it.

Thank you! I am in the process of converting to Catholicism and I have studied the Bible. I grew up in a Fundamental Baptist Church and I started studying the Bible and much of what I saw didn't line up with what the Baptist Church teaches such as Once-Saved-Always-Saved or that Baptism is symbolic or the Rapture the list goes on. But a major weakness the Catholic Church does seem to have is that catechesis doesn't seem to be as great as it used to be, many who convert in adulthood seem to understand the faith better than many who were born and raised in it.

Actually, Paul's teaching that we Protestants often pull out of context is from Ephesians 2:8 *For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so that no one can boast. However, they need to go to verse 10, which says: For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.* So, grace is a free gift that we receive simply because we ask for it, but that grace inevitably empowers and motivates us to walk in the good works that God has prepared for each unique individual, and the Church as a Body, to do. So, a true recipient of the free gift of God's grace (available only because of the finished work of Christ on the cross) will naturally do good works. He or she won't be able to help it.
I've always thought that one's works were a sign of one's continual acceptance of, and gratitude for, the grace of salvation poured out for us in Christ's Death and Resurrection. Without the works which help us become better followers of Christ, it is easy to fall away from the faith. Nothing we do can push away His Love, but we can push ourselves away from Him if we do not keep our faith alive by works such as prayer, receiving the sacraments, charity, etc.
@@jeremiahong248 Well said. Theoretically sound but unfortunately doesn't work out in reality when you think about Christ dying once and for all. Treating Grace like it's this bank of good works, and any time you sin, you need to apply for a loan, and in turn work off the loan defeats the purpose of Christ's sacrifice, and contradicts the following verse: "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." Ro 11:6 Let's look at the parable of the Pharisee and the publican. "The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." I've never seen so many people reading their bibles until I met her. Her and her friends all have bibles that are all very well worn. Whereas I don't recall anyone growing up in my Catholic family that read the bible on a regular basis. She got me into reading the Bible on a regular basis. Interestingly enough, the more I read it, the more I realize it points directly to Catholicism. Yet paradoxically, the non-denominational people that do read the bible regularly make me wonder if they actually understand what they are reading because I feel that if they did , they'd be Catholic.
Great video I was eagerly waiting for long time . Never saw such a clear video about catholism. Very simple straight forward and deep . It is really important in these times when people from catholic are not aware of there traditional church and move on other newly organized church evolved with no deep rooted doctrines

In confirmation class for 2 years we read the Bible and the nuns asked us to write a paper on what we read. Catholics don’t read the Bible because they are not encouraged by teaches of the faith or by parents to do so. That said we read the Bible every time we go to church. My mom used to say she was never encouraged to read the Bible, on time I said to her, “ But you had the Bible read to you every time you attended mass”.

May i add that when Jesus met with the two disciple on the road to emmaus and had dinner with them, he disappeared in the moment of breaking the bread, thus signifying he became present in the eucharist. Plus Beit lehem means the house of bread and baby jesus was put in a cradle in which the sheep eat from.

I thought Christ becomes present in the Eucharist when the bread is blessed. Looks to me like Jesus blessed the bread first, and was still physically present. He did not vanish until after He handed them the blessed bread.

I also have something to point about that last argument you made where you said that having faith only cannot bring you salvation. I've seen in Ephesians 2:8-9 (which is the foundation of our belief that faith REALLY is the only basis for salvation), that "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that NOT of yourselves, it is the gift of God: NOT of works, lest any man should boast." This is explicitly in the Bible, but you forgot about it. What a nice way to construct an argument.
But faith does safe but true faith produces works like praying for the sick , following the commandments, helping the poor a true Christian would do this and other good things and its a sing of faith which would get you saved And this is what salvation by faith and works mean (is an oversimplafied turn a Bad one) plus fr.Casey one said that faith is like a train ticket , You obtain it but You have to go to the train (something like that) and what that mean is that we are saved by faith in Christ but a true beliver would help the poor etc. But i hope You understand what i am trying to say but if You don't You can ask me what i'm trying to say but still tell me what i'm trying to say if You misread or misunderstood Have a Nice day and God bless you brother in Christ!!!
Read the Bible - we were never encouraged to read the Bible when we were young. It was not until I became an adult that I started to take an interest in it. It has been a long ride. I am glad I found you on RUclips. God bless you!
Nor does the bible encourage you to read the bible. But you should listen to the word of God and if you have been going to Mass all those years you have been listening to the word of God constantly.
Excellent video! I haven’t watched in a while and I truly enjoyed this. We need to completely revamp the catechetical process for all ages and start really truly instruction in the Faith so that young Catholics can embrace the fullness of life in the Church and be a witness to others.

Yes driven by the holy spirit through human authors and gave that authority to preserve, collect and canonize, to create, to decide which books belong to Old and New testament, to translate it, to put verses and chapters, to call it “bible” and to interpret it. All of that was done by the Catholic Church. 😊
@@CiaranRKelleher The Apostles and their disciples wrote the NT under the guidance and instructions of the Holy Spirit. They know Jesus and were under His personal tutelage. They knew the correct interpretation of the Word. They pass down the correct interpretation and understanding of scriptures to their disciples. That is why scripture says in 2 Peter 3:16 that scripture is hard to understand and need proper guidance. "He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction." The bible didn't drop from heaven. Understand how the bible came into being. In AD 393 - AD 400, the Catholic Church at the Council of Hippo and Carthage filter through all the letters and epistles that were ever written and DECIDED with the help of the HS and the authority given in Matt 18:18, which of these hundreds of letters and epistles were really the true Word of God, which were apocryphal and which were heretical. They , with divine authority given by Jesus decided which books should be in the canon of the NT. None of these books were removed, (though some were disputed by Luther but were overruled by other Protestants). So Orthodox Christians and Protestants as well as Evangelicals abided by the decision of the Catholic Church in the selection process. The canon of the NT has never changed since the Catholic Church decided on it 1600 years ago. The canon of the OT was not settled and decided during Jesus's time. The Pharisees used a different OT canon from the Sadduccee. The Catholic Church also decided on the OT canon at the above councils which were used till for another 1000 years until the Reformation which saw the Protestants threw away the 7 books against scripture teaching in Rev 22:18 - 19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
5-2020 I read the 4 gospels in the New Testament for the first time. I plan on reading the entire New Testament. I'm in my mid 40's. I love Jesus and God. I'm investigating Catholic faith and Protestant faith.

I chose to be a Catholic after studying the history of the Church, the history of the bible and comparing the theological differences between Catholics/Protestants. Jesus, has set up a Church headed by Peter as the rock of the Church to teach others what Jesus has taught and given divine backing to the Catholic Church that Satan will not over come it in Matt 16 :18 I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Jesus appointed His disciples to be His representatives on Earth by investing divine authority unto them when He breathed the Holy Spirit into them in John 20:20 Jesus gave the keys of His Kingdom to Peter and the authority to act on His behalf- to.bind and loosen in Matt 16 : 16 -19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. "The keys" are abilities to open and explain the Gospel truths, and a mission and commission from Christ to make use of them; and being said to be given to Peter particularly, denotes his after qualifications, commission, work, and usefulness in opening the door of faith, or preaching the Gospel first to the Jews, ( Acts 2:1-47 ) and then to the Gentiles, ( Acts 10:1-48 ) ( Acts 15:7 Acts 15:14) and who was the first that made use of the keys of evangelical knowledge with respect to both, after he, with the rest of the apostles, had received an enlarged commission to preach the Gospel to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. There are 32000 denominations each proclaiming to be the one true Church. The only way is to look back to see what Jesus taught and what the Apostles and early Church believed. They all.hold Catholic beliefs like the true presence of the Eucharist etc. The Apostles were also given the authority to bind and loose and the authority to retain / forgive sins in John 20:21 - 23 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you!As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Jesus promised to be with the Catholic Church till the end of time and the mandate to proclaim the Good News in Matt 28:20 teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Thus the Apostles have divine authority to represent Jesus on Earth and knew the correct interpretations of what Jesus taught. That is why they wrote the New Testament under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles passed on these teachings to the Early Church Fathers and their disciples. The teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church after 2000 years is the same as what Jesus taught and what the Apostles upheld. All of the present Catholic clergy can trace their ordination back to the Apostles. These are the biblical basis of the Catholic Church. All other 32000 denominations/churches are founded by men without any divine authority and are not found in the bible.
It's great that you're doing your own research. Me too! Like Jeremiah says, there are 32000 denominations, all claiming to be the one true church. Unfortunately, Jeremiah misses "the rock" that's referenced multiple times in the OT. This rock points to a person. Is this rock in the Old Testament pointing to Peter or Jesus? Everything Jeremiah asserts are what the RCC teaches. Facts like the pope (or 'papa' in latin; his true title is "The Holy Father") being "infallible" (which Jeremiah is saying is justified with "the keys to heaven" verse), the pope being the literal head of state of Vatican City, the selling of indulgences (which the RCC still practices), having a copy of the bible be a literal death sentence for a very long time and the entirety of mass being performed in a dead language should be enough evidence to support the statement that The Roman Catholic Church is in fact not the one true church. With all that said though, Matt, I hope we both get to the truth and build strong relationships with God. Peace!

If you can find one official reference that the Catholic Church still sell indulgences nowadays, I will leave the RCC and join your church. The rock is Peter. Jesus said so in the bible. Matt 16:18 (KJV) And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The bible says very clearly Jesus told Peter he is the rock upon which Jesus build His church. I understand English. I believe you do too. And I deliberately chose KJV so that you won't argue I took my quote from a Catholic bible. Mass is celebrated in a dead language ? Do you know that the Latin Mass is only celebrated by a small handful of parishes ? The majority of the Mass 99.9% is celebrated in the country's own language. I travelled internationally for my work. I attended Mass in Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Indonesia (Bali), Taiwan, HK, Macau, Shanghai, Australia and Singapore. All Masses have been celebrated in their own respective native languages.

Now...I love the way you defended our Catholic faith. This is the time, isn't it? Before not so many Catholic priests wanted to do that. They always laid low, humble, and avoided confrontation with our Protestants brothers/sisters. Faith without works is dead, because true faith will lead to works. Works is not something you can do to earn salvation, but rather it flows out of your regenerate heart in the form of good works.
Bridgefin What about being saved by grace through faith alone? You trying to earn your salvation with works? Even our best works are like filthy rags before God.

As a Catholic I sometimes hear things like this (you saying that blessing yourself "takes away venial sin by mini baptism"). But where does this come from? I'm not aware of it being in the written or oral tradition of the Catholic Church. I worry that these get confused with real church teaching and distract us from true prayer and practice of faith. I'll give you another example from around this area. There was a belief that putting a Child of Prague statue outside would bring good weather. One of my aunts fervently believed in this... and i remember when we were young she would put the statue outside ... with an upside down bucket over the statue just in case it rained 😂
If we qualify it with "some Christians believe", then much of this is true in the sense that there is no catechism of protestantism to refute it, and someone probably believes it, but I'd challenge that these are fair representations of protestant thought. The strong form of "sola scriptora" as it was described in the intro would be foolish (the church preceded the literal Bible, so had to be an authority in deciding what was canon). A generic protestant view would be that there is one gospel, that even through revelation we can but put the past forward, and "the church" may be most universally described in terms of the apostles creed. In short the point of disagreement there would be on apostilic succession, where protestants (broadly) would not deny communion to any who would say amen to the apostle's creed, but that cannot be said of the Catholic church. In this sense, it's worth considering the idea that protestantism accepts the authority of the church as understood from our first creeds, but that the Catholic church has moved away. On the Real Presence, definitely John 6 alone is the strongest argument in favour of some interpretation other than a memorial, except Jesus actually does clarify it, both within John (I would argue, John 13) but more clearly through direct revalation to Paul in 1 Corinthians 11. In a passover meal where one would say the egg "is the new spring", the herbs "are the slavery in egypt", etc., Jesus says that the wine "is" his blood, and reveals to Paul that this is "in remembrance" of Jesus, to "proclaim the Lord's death until he comes". He gave his flesh and blood, the real flesh and blood we could chew on (not as metaphor), on the cross. This would be a more fair representation of protestant thought, and consistent with the realness of the blood that a real human being knew he was about to gruesomely spill for us. On Sola Fide, I would suggest that if you asked a room full of protestants whether "belief alone" constitutes a saving faith, very few would agree with this, and no serious theologeon would. On this point, as far as I can tell you are right (we broadly agree on this point), but just keep in mind the implications of Jesus' statement to the man on the cross next to him, suggesting a saving faith is one that would have works, not one that does. On Maryology, the "charge" is not that these verses aren't in the Bible, but that it's difficult to hold up this interpretation alongside other scripture. Jesus says that those who do God's will are his mother and brothers instead of accepting the idea that Mary was to be thought of as his mother (Mark 3). He generalized the closest account we have of a "Hail Mary" in His presence to "blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it" (Luke 11). Further Mary states herself that God is her savior (Luke 1), so evidently she needed one (where only sinners need salvation). The other issue here is that Mary as "the new Eve" or "new tabernacle" seem (again) difficult to hold up alongside other scripture. How can we understand Matthew 27's tearing of the curtain of the temple, laying bare the separation between us and the holy of holy's, except to say that the days of tabernacles are gone? If we're reconciled through Christ as our righteousness, the whole idea of interceders seems to falls away. Maybe a finer point here - If you consider Kierkegaard's essay on the bird and the lily of Matthew 6, and his response to why we're more valuable than sparrows, with that view of salvation an immaculately conceived Mary could not "look up from lowliness" as a Christian could (granted this is a specific concept of Christian existentialism, not general to all protestantism). Anyway, I'd just strongly encourage you if you make videos about protestantism or controversies between Catholics and Protestants to make them more of a dialogue with people who can give a fair representation to the ideas that you're criticizing, or the criticisms that you're responding to. There are too many straw men on the Internet and I don't believe you're trying to raise more of them. I apologize if I sounded overly negative there as I honestly do enjoy a lot of these videos as they're clarifying on a few points not directly addressed in the catechism as clearly.
Your argument itself is a straw man. You are advocating and criticizing the Catholic Church for moving away from our first creeds. Thereby, implying that what he is saying is flawed and thus, so is Catholicism. It's like you didn't even watch the video. So in essence what you enjoy is agreeing on the facts/religious stances that you agree with. This is an erroneous summary, the point of disagreement is doctrinal and this created a dispute in apostolic succession. And so, your argument that the Catholic Church has strayed from the original creed is incorrect. More so, because the original creeds were brought about long before the Bible. Christ according to the Catholic Church appointed Peter as the head of His Church and gave him the authority to pass this assignation from Christ to a successor. If Protestant clergy truly followed the creed of the Apostles they would not marry and have children as well, since no apostle was married or had children. What you are doing is disingenuous but false in essence. He stated that Protestant's stance of justification as quoted by Luther only covers the refuse we are, in a nice beautiful covering, but that in essence we are refuse, not that good works are not required or encouraged. This is a separate issue from justification, seeing as justification for Protestants is not an ongoing process. Your points on Mary simply demonstrates what I have argued. And that is that you enjoy what you agree with and simply dismiss the other with a disingenuous way of politeness and addressing your concern for the proliferation of straw man arguments. Your points are valid from a viewpoint of your Christian sect, but they are not for the Catholic Church for the reasons stated in the video. I encourage anyone who is reading this to pay attention to the video and be honest about their stance in their comments. If you do not agree with what is being said, then dismiss his arguments based on your own religious stance and facts where available. But one should not change the nature of the argument one disagrees with simply to better defend their own position, this is falsehood. And if there's one thing protestants and Catholics and all Abraham religions agree with, it is that falsehood is a terrible sin that goes against the nature of God.
@@Aphorim I think you may be reading more than what I said, since even at points where I agreed with the priest (eg: on sola fide "as far as I can tell you are right") you say I ignored his argument and built a straw man, where I was in agreement and adding a point of clarity about protestantism. Keep in mind that my remarks were mainly to clarify protestant positions and correct those where I saw error; I was not trying to correct a catholic priest about what catholics believe. For what it's worth, particularly where I was responding to catholic positions, I hope you are right that I've misunderstood them, but you don't need to insult me. For what sounds like a charge of bad faith on my part, I really do take catholic positions seriously. I've read two books for the purpose of better-understanding transubstantiation alone, and I have probably spent more time reading the catholic catechism than any equivalent protestant 'discipline' document. I have concerns, where what I would "enjoy" is the opposite, and for a greater unity in the church overall. What I did was criticize your argument, because I don't think I was reading into what was said in your argument (I still don't). I am willing to concede I may be wrong, but there are several instances in your argument that lead me to believe otherwise. For one, you cannot claim to clarify Protestant positions, because the only true unified position of Protestantism is the rejection of the Catholic Church. There is no higher or centralized authority in Protestantism. As it is, there are eight major branches, without counting the smaller branches. The video addresses some popular Protestant positions, but by no means are they THE Protestant position, and it is careful to note that. In addition, although you claim to read about Catholicism, you fail to distinguish the difference between a Friar and a Priest, this is not the same thing. Lastly, your last paragraph in your original argument is exceedingly polite, but it is veiled with insinuations that are unkind. People often forget that the way things are said reveals more about someone's intent and character, than what they say.
@@Aphorim I felt that this video addressed inaccurate representations of popular protestant positions, rather than the positions themselves. With 30+ years spent in several different reform denominations, bible studies, sunday schools, etc., I know these arguments to be both different and stronger than those presented here. That is harmful, because it stirs division within the church that otherwise doesn't exist, and is a kind of rumour mongering about what "the other side" thinks. Broadly speaking, we do not think most of these things, where by "we" I mean any protestant sermon, lesson, or study group discussions I've ever heard. To put this in perspective, imagine if you saw a protestant preacher give a sermon on Catholicism, criticising practices like the worship of Mary, or of having a works-based salvation doctrine. That stuff happens, which is harmful/divisive, and I call that stuff out when I see it. This is the same kind of thing. Regarding insults, "dishonest", "disingenuous", that I "enjoy what I agree with", that I (as protestant) am "lax" regarding the sacraments, that I'm part of a "sect" (normally suggesting heresy)... None of this is a response to what I said, but rather these are judgements about my personal motivations, my sincerity, etc. They are personal insults.
That was his point about praying for the sins of the dead. The souls in Purgatory are heaven bound and being purified from any attachments to sin. Our prayers are for these souls in their purification.
Purgatory wasn't written in the Bible. Jesus Said in His Parable that there is only 2 places that man can Go. In the day of Judgement, it is the Heaven and Hell. Matthew 25:31-34,41 New King James Version

When a person dies and they are without Christ then they are going to hell. Jesus and the Bible are clear on that. You can not pray away a dead person's sins. It is too late.

I can only speak for my Italian experience, but I think it's because most Catholic churches don't really have Bible studies at their parishes. Catechism to children is based on the catechism books only. Nobody has a portable Bible (a lot of people will have a bulky fancy Bible at home though) and reads it but some will carry saints prayers and mother Mary devotions. Most people are praying known prayers but not reading the Bible. We need a Catholic Renaissance :)

It is grossly untrue to say of clerical celibacy that, "It has been a sign of ministerial leadership since the beginning." This statement is made at 2:10. In the early Church, clerical celibacy was not mandatory. Indeed, to this very day, it has never been mandatory in the Eastern churches, which were in full communion with the West until 1054. 1 Timothy 3:2 states that a bishop should have only one wife. Does this not count as the beginning? 1 Corinthians 9:5 states that some of the apostles were married, including St. James. There are numerous other married clergymen who have been entered into the Calendar of Saints in both the East and West during the first 1,000 years of the Church's history. I am certainly not asserting that there is anything illegitimate about clerical celibacy. God does indeed call men and women to a life of celibacy in His service. I am merely stating that celibacy as a sign of ministerial leadership "since the beginning" is untrue in the West and remains untrue in the East to this very day.
I think he was just pointing out that there is also Biblical evidence for celibate priests as part of that leadership “since the beginning”. While the East does allow married priests, he’s not wrong in saying the majority of the Church requires priests to be celibate as the majority of the Catholic Church is made up of the West. They’re is grounds Bibically for allowing married priests and for priests to be celibate. I may be wrong, but I think in the Eastern Church you still have to either be married before being a priest or you have to live a life of celibacy. You can’t get married after being ordained.
I assumed while watching the video he was referring to bishops when he said ministerial leadership. Even in the East, bishops are only chosen from celibate priests.

Fr, thank you for this particular RUclips. You have done the homework for the ones who won’t. And the ones that do, this will guide them for further understanding. One question: The celibacy part of the Priesthood for Roman Catholics. What about our other catholic brothers and sisters that do ordain married Priest? Being in the military I have celebrated Mass and received the Eucharist from Eastern Catholic Priest, who were married.
A tool I use that helped me read the bible was a bible handbook by Henry Halley. I would advise the Catholic church to publish a book like this to help Catholics read the bible more.
One thing I learned from investing more time into reading the Bible is that a lot of what is said in mass is straight out of the Bible. It goes to show how beautifully intertwined our tradition is with scripture.
That's how Dr Scott Hahn became Catholic. It went to mass to disprove Catholic teaching, and was impressed by how each aspect of the mass had scriptural roots.
Exactly. Everything in the Mass is straight from the Bible. Including the fact that the Eucharist IS Christ. It doesn't memorialize him it it IS his body, blood, soul and Divinity.

I am also a Catholic but I don't understand, I have so many why like you, but I discovered the answer when I consistently go to mass and participate, and I eventually get the answer. But if you want to know the direct answer, then find time to talk to a priest. Why the priest, because they studied,research in so many years than us. members.

Charles M L the thing about Catholicism is that there are rarely clear “proof text” verses for doctrines. The point is to take the Bible as a whole. For example, take teaching Faith + works, or denouncing “faith alone.” It’s taking “for by grace are you saved through faith” and putting it with “faith without works is dead” and affirming that both are true. Then putting it with realizing that Jesus was asked several times how to enter the kingdom of heaven and he didn’t say simply, “believe in me.” He told people specifically and individually what they had to DO. So I’ll say the Bible as a whole made me Catholic, no specific scriptures.

Yes I felt the same way. I was a protestant for about 10 years and I was a Catholic before that. I thought the Catholic Church was too strict. That’s why I went to becoming a protestant. Now I’ve returned back to the Catholic Church and I’m in Sacrament classes right now.
40,000 Protestant denomination, all founded by MEN. All preach Bible alone. But they all read the same book differently. Christ founded one Church, not a movement.

Catholics dont worship Mary but we honour Mother Mary because
1. She is the Mother of Jesus, our Lord and deserves our respect.
2. Her role in our salvation is foretold in Genesis 3:15 when God told the Devil
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
She is the only human being whom God has chosen for His plan to save the fallen human race. God could have forgiven the Human race but He chose Mary out of His own free will to be part of His salvific plan for us.

Mother Mary Mary intercedes for all of us. Reference the Wedding at CanaJohn 2 : 1 to 12 when Christ performed His first miracle, even though He initially said it wasnt His time yet. Mother Mary didn't tell Jesus what to do but directs the servants to Jesus, just as she directs us now to Jesus. The focus and glory is always in Jesus.
4. God killed Uzzah in 2 Sam 6:6 to 7 for touching the Ark of the Old Covenant :
When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.
Despite doing a good deed by stabilising a falling Ark, Uzzah was deemed unworthy and to have defile the Ark.
The Ark of the old Covenant carried the Word of God in stone. Mother Mary carried the Word of God in flesh. She is thus sinless as she had to carried the Living Word of God in her womb for 9 months. Uzzah was struck dead by a mere touch. What's more 9 months of pregnancy? Thus we honour Mother Mary for carrying the Living Word of God. The sacredness and holiness of the Old Ark was evident by Uzzah's slaying, what's more the New Ark which is carrying Jesus.
5. Jesus the King of Kings bestowed Queenship on His mother Rev 12 :1
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
This woman is Mary because she is in heaven where God is. The only human being God will allow Queenship in heaven is Jesus's mother - the Queen Mother of the King of Kings. This woman is not the Church as some Protestants claim because in subsequent verses.Rev 12 : 2 to 5 this woman gave birth to a son which will rule all nations and whom the devil wanted to harm but couldn't. The only human that can stand up to the devil is Jesus.

6. We honour Mother Mary because we are grateful to her for saying Yes to God, when she was still an unmarried woman but had to bear Jesus, thereby being instrumental in the human race's salvation.
7. We honour Mother Mary because she was obedient to God and is our model of ideal discipleship. She didn't ask for God's detail operation plan, what's going to happen to her when she is found pregnant in old conservative Jewish society, how to answer to Joseph when he found out she is pregnant before their marriage, how is Mary going to live on financially if Joseph divorce her, what role is her son going to undertake etc. Nothing. No details needed. No assurances needed. Just a simple yes to God. And God is pleased with faithful disciples just as He is pleased with Abraham for his faithfulness.
For these reasons, Mother Mary deserves our honour - just as how the Early Church honours her for 1500 years till the Reformation. The Orthodox Christians who broke away from the Catholic Church honours Mother Mary. Martin Luther, the Father of the Protestant Reformation loves Mother Mary, honours her and prays the rosary.
The veneration of Mary is inscribed in the very depths of the human heart. (Sermon, September 1, 1522).
[She is the] highest woman and the noblest gem in Christianity after Christ. ..She is nobility, wisdom, and holiness personified. We can never honor her enough. Still honor and praise must be given to her in such a way as to injure neither Christ nor the Scriptures. (Sermon, Christmas, 1531).
No woman is like you. You are more than Eve or Sarah, blessed above all nobility, wisdom, and sanctity. (Sermon, Feast of the Visitation. 1537).
One should honor Mary as she herself wished and as she expressed it in the Magnificat. She praised God for his deeds. How then can we praise her? The true honor of Mary is the honor of God, the praise of God's grace.. .Mary is nothing for the sake of herself, but for the sake of Christ...Mary does not wish that we come to her, but through her to God. (Explanation of the Magnificat, 1521).
Luther goes even further, and gives the Blessed Virgin the exalted position of "Spiritual Mother" for Christians, much the same as in Catholic piety:
It is the consolation and the superabundant goodness of God, that man is able to exult in such a treasure. Mary is his true Mother, Christ is his brother. God is his father. (Sermon. Christmas, 1522)
Mary is the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all of us even though it was Christ alone who reposed on her knees...If he is ours, we ought to be in his situation; there where he is, we ought also to be and all that he has ought to be ours, and his mother is also our mother. (Sermon, Christmas, 1529).
Catholics honour Mother Mary but we also believed that Christ is still the only mediator with God. Christ and Christ alone.

@@jeremiahong248 Honoring Mary is no different from worshipping another God in the eyes of God. Our dictionaries and definitions mean nothing compared to God. Deut 5:8 should make that clear, which is btw the verse not found in the RC Ten Commandments because you took it out to circumvent having statues and prayer beads, praying to saints and Mary, and kissing Pope rings.
We should pray to, glorify, honor, venerate, worship, and all other synonyms thereof the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and nobody else, not even popes (Acts 12:22-23).
Edit: Your sources on Vatican documents aren't Scripture and therefore invalid (Acts 5:29, Gal 1:8, 2 Tim 3:16-17).
Exactly. So many protrstants say we resacrifice Christ, no, it is that same sacrifice he made in Calvary. God transcends all time, and so his sacrifice is all bounding, and we partake in his flesh and blood OF that sacrifice.
Addition: I also hear many Roman rite Catholics don't believe in it being the body and the blood, and that makes me sad, we need to reinforce this doctrine in the church, and make it known more and more, that it is not a symbol, it is the literal body and blood of our Lord.

There are many Catholics that don't know that Jesus is truly present in the Eucarist, and this is pretty sad but is mostly because of bad cathechisis and a lack of knowledge, rather than active disbelief.

Brilliant as usual. I think we Catholics were discouraged from reading the bible because we would misinterpret it. Given that the early church founders had the most scholarly people who knew all the nuances of tradition and cultures from the time of Jesus and going way back before. These scholars put the whole bible together assuming there was knowledge of the nuances.
If we read the bible without the nuances and subtleties taken into account we move with an accumulated error diverging away from what the original writings were.
We Catholics need to be guided and tutored into how to read and interpret the bible. Otherwise we just become like Martin Luther.
I go online to official Catholic authorities to find out how to interpret our faith.

This is one of the best and most concise apologetic overviews of these teachings that I've found so far! Great work, Fr. Casey! Although it might be a little tough to justify purgatory to a Protestant using 2nd Maccabees, since they don't believe it is canonical. Personally, I tend to use 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 to talk about that teaching. Thanks for the work you're doing!
Matthew 5:21-26 is also an interesting allusion to it.
Maccabees is not even in the Torah. It says nothing about Jesus, there is nothing to prove there is a purgatory. First Corinthians is not talking about any purgatory or works after we are dead. Paul is talking about living people. It says the works we do now will last forever. It has nothing to do with a place for the dead. You cannot pray for the dead or pay money to get people out of hell. There is one life and one death. The life we have now will either send us to heaven or hell. You must make Jesus your Lord and Savior. He and He alone is your Savior. It has nothing to do with baptism or works.
@@bcalvert321 Maccabees could not be in the Torah, as that is made up of the five Books of Moses only. It is not included in the Tanakh (the canonized Old Testament/Hebrew scriptures), which I think is what you were referring to (maybe?). Many scholars believe this is due to how late it was written (the events in Maccabees took place around 200-150 years before Christ’s birth), as the rabbis already had a pretty solid list of books they felt should constitute the Tanakh when the book of Maccabees was written.
Maccabees also wouldn’t mention Jesus as you mentioned because, once again, it was written well before His birth.
Neither of these points mean that the book(s) of Maccabees aren’t important or contain value. In John chapter 10, Jesus makes sure He is in Jerusalem to celebrate “the festival of dedication”. This festival is what we know as Hanukkah (“Hanukkah” means “dedication”). Guess where the story of the miracle of Hanukkah is recorded… The book of Maccabees! So Jesus certainly didn’t throw out the story as just non-canonical trash, neither did all the other Jews of His time. So maybe there is more value to this book than you’ve considered? Maybe there are tons of things that would be good for us to consider with a more open mind, hoping to grow in our knowledge and walk with The Lord?

Since they are not mentioned anywhere except in their own books then It is not scripturally important. To the Jews, it is important because it was historically important. It talks about the razing of the Temple. The Jews of Jesus' time never prayed to the dead or for the dead. Again Jesus never mentioned the book but it was just a history story. The only open mind we need are to the scriptures we know are important and those of the NT.

The book of Jude quotes the book of Enoch (without giving it the citation you seem to feel is so necessary for authenticity) as an authoritative source of spiritual reality and history. What does mean to you? Are you ok? Shall I drive you to the hospital so you don’t stroke out over this revelation? Things aren’t as simple and Protestant as you might have believed! 😲 If Jude, Christ’s brother, considered this book authoritative… maybe you’re a bad Protestant for disregarding it?
Maccabees wasn’t mentioned in the OT because it was written (pretty much, except for the finalized book of Daniel) after the books of the OT, so it couldn’t be mentioned. History is linear, ideally. The New Testament didn’t mention Maccabees specifically (though 2nd temple Jews - like Jesus - were celebrating Hanukkah) because… who knows? There are tons of reasons why this might be the case. Why are Naaman or the thief on the cross only mentioned in one tiny piece of scripture? Ehud? Balaam?
Lastly, you do know that the Maccabees didn’t actually name their book, right? Our modern Bible uses descriptive names about subjects or audiences of books, as has always been done. All the judges didn’t sit around and write Judges, Romans didn’t write… you get it.

Thank you! I am in the process of converting to Catholicism and I have studied the Bible. I grew up in a Fundamental Baptist Church and I started studying the Bible and much of what I saw didn't line up with what the Baptist Church teaches such as Once-Saved-Always-Saved or that Baptism is symbolic or the Rapture the list goes on. But a major weakness the Catholic Church does seem to have is that catechesis doesn't seem to be as great as it used to be, many who convert in adulthood seem to understand the faith better than many who were born and raised in it.

Actually, Paul's teaching that we Protestants often pull out of context is from Ephesians 2:8 *For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so that no one can boast. However, they need to go to verse 10, which says: For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.* So, grace is a free gift that we receive simply because we ask for it, but that grace inevitably empowers and motivates us to walk in the good works that God has prepared for each unique individual, and the Church as a Body, to do. So, a true recipient of the free gift of God's grace (available only because of the finished work of Christ on the cross) will naturally do good works. He or she won't be able to help it.
So is that for Christians only ? what about non Christians, the "Good works" they perform are not good ?

Receiving the free gift is the first work. You can't separate faith from works. Believing is a active verb, an act or work.
I've always thought that one's works were a sign of one's continual acceptance of, and gratitude for, the grace of salvation poured out for us in Christ's Death and Resurrection. Without the works which help us become better followers of Christ, it is easy to fall away from the faith. Nothing we do can push away His Love, but we can push ourselves away from Him if we do not keep our faith alive by works such as prayer, receiving the sacraments, charity, etc.
@@jeremiahong248 Well said. Theoretically sound but unfortunately doesn't work out in reality when you think about Christ dying once and for all. Treating Grace like it's this bank of good works, and any time you sin, you need to apply for a loan, and in turn work off the loan defeats the purpose of Christ's sacrifice, and contradicts the following verse:
"And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." Ro 11:6

You make an excellent point at the end of the video. My wife belongs to a non-denominational church. I've been Catholic my whole life. I've never seen so many people reading their bibles until I met her. Her and her friends all have bibles that are all very well worn. Whereas I don't recall anyone growing up in my Catholic family that read the bible on a regular basis. She got me into reading the Bible on a regular basis. Interestingly enough, the more I read it, the more I realize it points directly to Catholicism. Yet paradoxically, the non-denominational people that do read the bible regularly make me wonder if they actually understand what they are reading because I feel that if they did , they'd be Catholic.

In confirmation class for 2 years we read the Bible and the nuns asked us to write a paper on what we read. Catholics don’t read the Bible because they are not encouraged by teaches of the faith or by parents to do so. That said we read the Bible every time we go to church. My mom used to say she was never encouraged to read the Bible, on time I said to her, “ But you had the Bible read to you every time you attended mass”.

May i add that when Jesus met with the two disciple on the road to emmaus and had dinner with them, he disappeared in the moment of breaking the bread, thus signifying he became present in the eucharist.

I thought Christ becomes present in the Eucharist when the bread is blessed. Looks to me like Jesus blessed the bread first, and was still physically present. He did not vanish until after He handed them the blessed bread.

I also have something to point about that last argument you made where you said that having faith only cannot bring you salvation.
I've seen in Ephesians 2:8-9 (which is the foundation of our belief that faith REALLY is the only basis for salvation), that
"For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that NOT of yourselves, it is the gift of God: NOT of works, lest any man should boast."
This is explicitly in the Bible, but you forgot about it. What a nice way to construct an argument.
But faith does safe but true faith produces works like praying for the sick , following the commandments, helping the poor a true Christian would do this and other good things and its a sing of faith which would get you saved
And this is what salvation by faith and works mean (is an oversimplafied turn a Bad one) plus fr.Casey one said that faith is like a train ticket , You obtain it but You have to go to the train (something like that) and what that mean is that we are saved by faith in Christ but a true beliver would help the poor etc. But i hope You understand what i am trying to say but if You don't You can ask me what i'm trying to say but still tell me what i'm trying to say if You misread or misunderstood

Yes driven by the holy spirit through human authors and gave that authority to preserve, collect and canonize, to create, to decide which books belong to Old and New testament, to translate it, to put verses and chapters, to call it “bible” and to interpret it. The Apostles and their disciples wrote the NT under the guidance and instructions of the Holy Spirit. They know Jesus and were under His personal tutelage. They knew the correct interpretation of the Word. They pass down the correct interpretation and understanding of scriptures to their disciples. That is why scripture says in 2 Peter 3:16 that scripture is hard to understand and need proper guidance.
"He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction."
The bible didn't drop from heaven. Understand how the bible came into being.
In AD 393 - AD 400, the Catholic Church at the Council of Hippo and Carthage filter through all the letters and epistles that were ever written and DECIDED with the help of the HS and the authority given in Matt 18:18, which of these hundreds of letters and epistles were really the true Word of God, which were apocryphal and which were heretical. They , with divine authority given by Jesus decided which books should be in the canon of the NT. None of these books were removed, (though some were disputed by Luther but were overruled by other Protestants).
So Orthodox Christians and Protestants as well as Evangelicals abided by the decision of the Catholic Church in the selection process. The canon of the NT has never changed since the Catholic Church decided on it 1600 years ago.
The canon of the OT was not settled and decided during Jesus's time. The Pharisees used a different OT canon from the Sadduccee.
The Catholic Church also decided on the OT canon at the above councils which were used till for another 1000 years until the Reformation which saw the Protestants threw away the 7 books against scripture teaching in Rev 22:18 - 19

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
"The keys" are abilities to open and explain the Gospel truths, and a mission and commission from Christ to make use of them; and being said to be given to Peter particularly, denotes his after qualifications, commission, work, and usefulness in opening the door of faith, or preaching the Gospel first to the Jews, ( Acts 2:1-47 ) and then to the Gentiles, ( Acts 10:1-48 ) ( Acts 15:7 Acts 15:14) and who was the first that made use of the keys of evangelical knowledge with respect to both, after he, with the rest of the apostles, had received an enlarged commission to preach the Gospel to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
There are 32000 denominations each proclaiming to be the one true Church. The only way is to look back to see what Jesus taught and what the Apostles and early Church believed. They all.hold Catholic beliefs like the true presence of the Eucharist etc.
The Apostles were also given the authority to bind and loose and the authority to retain / forgive sins in John 20:21 - 23
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you!As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Jesus promised to be with the Catholic Church till the end of time and the mandate to proclaim the Good News in Matt 28:20
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Thus the Apostles have divine authority to represent Jesus on Earth and knew the correct interpretations of what Jesus taught. That is why they wrote the New Testament under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The Apostles passed on these teachings to the Early Church Fathers and their disciples. The teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church after 2000 years is the same as what Jesus taught and what the Apostles upheld.
All of the present Catholic clergy can trace their ordination back to the Apostles.
These are the biblical basis of the Catholic Church.
All other 32000 denominations/churches are founded by men without any divine authority and are not found in the bible.
It's great that you're doing your own research. Me too! Like Jeremiah says, there are 32000 denominations, all claiming to be the one true church. Unfortunately, Jeremiah misses "the rock" that's referenced multiple times in the OT. This rock points to a person. Is this rock in the Old Testament pointing to Peter or Jesus?
Everything Jeremiah asserts are what the RCC teaches. Facts like the pope (or 'papa' in latin; his true title is "The Holy Father") being "infallible" (which Jeremiah is saying is justified with "the keys to heaven" verse), the pope being the literal head of state of Vatican City, the selling of indulgences (which the RCC still practices), having a copy of the bible be a literal death sentence for a very long time and the entirety of mass being performed in a dead language should be enough evidence to support the statement that The Roman Catholic Church is in fact not the one true church.
With all that said though, Matt, I hope we both get to the truth and build strong relationships with God. Peace!

Mass is celebrated in a dead language ? Do you know that the Latin Mass is only celebrated by a small handful of parishes ? The majority of the Mass 99.9% is celebrated in the country's own language. I travelled internationally for my work. I attended Mass in Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Indonesia (Bali), Taiwan, HK, Macau, Shanghai, Australia and Singapore. All Masses have been celebrated in their own respective native languages.

Faith without works is dead, because true faith will lead to works. Works is not something you can do to earn salvation, but rather it flows out of your regenerate heart in the form of good works.
Having faith requires work. Trying to separate faith from works is a distortion of reality.

As a Catholic I sometimes hear things like this (you saying that blessing yourself "takes away venial sin by mini baptism"). But where does this come from? I'm not aware of it being in the written or oral tradition of the Catholic Church. I worry that these get confused with real church teaching and distract us from true prayer and practice of faith.
I'll give you another example from around this area. There was a belief that putting a Child of Prague statue outside would bring good weather. One of my aunts fervently believed in this... and i remember when we were young she would put the statue outside ... with an upside down bucket over the statue just in case it rained 😂

If we qualify it with "some Christians believe", then much of this is true in the sense that there is no catechism of protestantism to refute it, and someone probably believes it, but I'd challenge that these are fair representations of protestant thought.
The strong form of "sola scriptora" as it was described in the intro would be foolish (the church preceded the literal Bible, so had to be an authority in deciding what was canon). A generic protestant view would be that there is one gospel, that even through revelation we can but put the past forward, and "the church" may be most universally described in terms of the apostles creed. In short the point of disagreement there would be on apostilic succession, where protestants (broadly) would not deny communion to any who would say amen to the apostle's creed, but that cannot be said of the Catholic church. In this sense, it's worth considering the idea that protestantism accepts the authority of the church as understood from our first creeds, but that the Catholic church has moved away.
On the Real Presence, definitely John 6 alone is the strongest argument in favour of some interpretation other than a memorial, except Jesus actually does clarify it, both within John (I would argue, John 13) but more clearly through direct revalation to Paul in 1 Corinthians 11. In a passover meal where one would say the egg "is the new spring", the herbs "are the slavery in egypt", etc., Jesus says that the wine "is" his blood, and reveals to Paul that this is "in remembrance" of Jesus, to "proclaim the Lord's death until he comes". He gave his flesh and blood, the real flesh and blood we could chew on (not as metaphor), on the cross. This would be a more fair representation of protestant thought, and consistent with the realness of the blood that a real human being knew he was about to gruesomely spill for us.
On Sola Fide, I would suggest that if you asked a room full of protestants whether "belief alone" constitutes a saving faith, very few would agree with this, and no serious theologeon would. On this point, as far as I can tell you are right (we broadly agree on this point), but just keep in mind the implications of Jesus' statement to the man on the cross next to him, suggesting a saving faith is one that would have works, not one that does.
On Maryology, the "charge" is not that these verses aren't in the Bible, but that it's difficult to hold up this interpretation alongside other scripture. Jesus says that those who do God's will are his mother and brothers instead of accepting the idea that Mary was to be thought of as his mother (Mark 3). He generalized the closest account we have of a "Hail Mary" in His presence to "blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it" (Luke 11). Further Mary states herself that God is her savior (Luke 1), so evidently she needed one (where only sinners need salvation).
The other issue here is that Mary as "the new Eve" or "new tabernacle" seem (again) difficult to hold up alongside other scripture. How can we understand Matthew 27's tearing of the curtain of the temple, laying bare the separation between us and the holy of holy's, except to say that the days of tabernacles are gone? If we're reconciled through Christ as our righteousness, the whole idea of interceders seems to falls away. Maybe a finer point here - If you consider Kierkegaard's essay on the bird and the lily of Matthew 6, and his response to why we're more valuable than sparrows, with that view of salvation an immaculately conceived Mary could not "look up from lowliness" as a Christian could (granted this is a specific concept of Christian existentialism, not general to all protestantism).
Anyway, I'd just strongly encourage you if you make videos about protestantism or controversies between Catholics and Protestants to make them more of a dialogue with people who can give a fair representation to the ideas that you're criticizing, or the criticisms that you're responding to. There are too many straw men on the Internet and I don't believe you're trying to raise more of them. I apologize if I sounded overly negative there as I honestly do enjoy a lot of these videos as they're clarifying on a few points not directly addressed in the catechism as clearly.
Your argument itself is a straw man. You are advocating and criticizing the Catholic Church for moving away from our first creeds. Thereby, implying that what he is saying is flawed and thus, so is Catholicism. It's like you didn't even watch the video. So in essence what you enjoy is agreeing on the facts/religious stances that you agree with.

This is an erroneous summary, the point of disagreement is doctrinal and this created a dispute in apostolic succession. This also led to Protestants being far more lax in the ritual process required of a convert. To this day the Catholic Church maintains these standards set by Christ Himself and continued by Peter. And so, your argument that the Catholic Church has strayed from the original creed is incorrect. More so, because the original creeds were brought about long before the Bible. Christ according to the Catholic Church appointed Peter as the head of His Church and gave him the authority to pass this assignation from Christ to a successor. If Protestant clergy truly followed the creed of the Apostles they would not marry and have children as well, since no apostle was married or had children. What you are doing is disingenuous but false in essence.

On this point you are completely ignoring his argument, he did not say that Protestants believe faith alone is enough. He stated that Protestant's stance of justification as quoted by Luther only covers the refuse we are, in a nice beautiful covering, but that in essence we are refuse, not that good works are not required or encouraged. This is a separate issue from justification, seeing as justification for Protestants is not an ongoing process.
Your points on Mary simply demonstrates what I have argued. And that is that you enjoy what you agree with and simply dismiss the other with a disingenuous way of politeness and addressing your concern for the proliferation of straw man arguments. Your points are valid from a viewpoint of your Christian sect, but they are not for the Catholic Church for the reasons stated in the video.
I encourage anyone who is reading this to pay attention to the video and be honest about their stance in their comments. If you do not agree with what is being said, then dismiss his arguments based on your own religious stance and facts where available. But one should not change the nature of the argument one disagrees with simply to better defend their own position, this is falsehood. And if there's one thing protestants and Catholics and all Abraham religions agree with, it is that falsehood is a terrible sin that goes against the nature of God.

@@Aphorim I think you may be reading more than what I said, since even at points where I agreed with the priest (eg: on sola fide "as far as I can tell you are right") you say I ignored his argument and built a straw man, where I was in agreement and adding a point of clarity about protestantism. Keep in mind that my remarks were mainly to clarify protestant positions and correct those where I saw error; I was not trying to correct a catholic priest about what catholics believe. For what it's worth, particularly where I was responding to catholic positions, I hope you are right that I've misunderstood them, but you don't need to insult me.
For what sounds like a charge of bad faith on my part, I really do take catholic positions seriously. I've read two books for the purpose of better-understanding transubstantiation alone, and I have probably spent more time reading the catholic catechism than any equivalent protestant 'discipline' document. I have concerns, where what I would "enjoy" is the opposite, and for a greater unity in the church overall. That (unity of the church) is my bias, if any, where here I read much "violent agreement" about the reality of points of disagreement if that makes sense.

What I did was criticize your argument, because I don't think I was reading into what was said in your argument (I still don't). I am willing to concede I may be wrong, but there are several instances in your argument that lead me to believe otherwise. For one, you cannot claim to clarify Protestant positions, because the only true unified position of Protestantism is the rejection of the Catholic Church. There is no higher or centralized authority in Protestantism. As it is, there are eight major branches, without counting the smaller branches. The video addresses some popular Protestant positions, but by no means are they THE Protestant position, and it is careful to note that. In addition, although you claim to read about Catholicism, you fail to distinguish the difference between a Friar and a Priest, this is not the same thing. Lastly, your last paragraph in your original argument is exceedingly polite, but it is veiled with insinuations that are unkind. People often forget that the way things are said reveals more about someone's intent and character, than what they say.
@@Aphorim I felt that this video addressed inaccurate representations of popular protestant positions, rather than the positions themselves. With 30+ years spent in several different reform denominations, bible studies, sunday schools, etc., I know these arguments to be both different and stronger than those presented here. That is harmful, because it stirs division within the church that otherwise doesn't exist, and is a kind of rumour mongering about what "the other side" thinks. Broadly speaking, we do not think most of these things, where by "we" I mean any protestant sermon, lesson, or study group discussions I've ever heard.
To put this in perspective, imagine if you saw a protestant preacher give a sermon on Catholicism, criticising practices like the worship of Mary, or of having a works-based salvation doctrine. That stuff happens, which is harmful/divisive, and I call that stuff out when I see it. This is the same kind of thing.
Regarding insults, "dishonest", "disingenuous", that I "enjoy what I agree with", that I (as protestant) am "lax" regarding the sacraments, that I'm part of a "sect" (normally suggesting heresy)... None of this is a response to what I said, but rather these are judgements about my personal motivations, my sincerity, etc. They are personal insults.

That was his point about praying for the sins of the dead. The souls in Purgatory are heaven bound and being purified from any attachments to sin. Our prayers are for these souls in their purification.

I can only speak for my Italian experience, but I think it's because most Catholic churches don't really have Bible studies at their parishes. Catechism to children is based on the catechism books only. Nobody has a portable Bible (a lot of people will have a bulky fancy Bible at home though) and reads it but some will carry saints prayers and mother Mary devotions. Most people are praying known prayers but not reading the Bible. We need a Catholic Renaissance :)

It is grossly untrue to say of clerical celibacy that, "It has been a sign of ministerial leadership since the beginning." This statement is made at 2:10.
In the early Church, clerical celibacy was not mandatory. Indeed, to this very day, it has never been mandatory in the Eastern churches, which were in full communion with the West until 1054.
1 Timothy 3:2 states that a bishop should have only one wife. Does this not count as the beginning? 1 Corinthians 9:5 states that some of the apostles were married, including St. James. There are numerous other married clergymen who have been entered into the Calendar of Saints in both the East and West during the first 1,000 years of the Church's history.
I am certainly not asserting that there is anything illegitimate about clerical celibacy. God does indeed call men and women to a life of celibacy in His service. I am merely stating that celibacy as a sign of ministerial leadership "since the beginning" is untrue in the West and remains untrue in the East to this very day.

I think he was just pointing out that there is also Biblical evidence for celibate priests as part of that leadership “since the beginning”. While the East does allow married priests, he’s not wrong in saying the majority of the Church requires priests to be celibate as the majority of the Catholic Church is made up of the West. They’re is grounds Bibically for allowing married priests and for priests to be celibate. I may be wrong, but I think in the Eastern Church you still have to either be married before being a priest or you have to live a life of celibacy. You can’t get married after being ordained.
I assumed while watching the video he was referring to bishops when he said ministerial leadership. Even in the East, bishops are only chosen from celibate priests.

One question:
The celibacy part of the Priesthood for Roman Catholics. What about our other catholic brothers and sisters that do ordain married Priest? Being in the military I have celebrated Mass and received the Eucharist from Eastern Catholic Priest, who were married.
The church was before the bible.
A tool I use that helped me read the bible was a bible handbook by Henry Halley. I would advise the Catholic church to publish a book like this to help Catholics read the bible more.
