Ya know, as a Protestant, I always had to give the answer of “this is just my interpretation” because I had no authority as a Baptist over a Presbyterian. A Methodist has no teaching authority over a Pentecostal. It’s eventually just people giving academic Ted talks to each other. I used to hate the idea of tradition but when I really started analyze it, I began to understand why we need tradition. The Reformation alone shows why we need tradition and authority. Without the responsibility of holding fast to the WHOLE of the Christian Faith, we will be left in the chaos.

56pjr Faith alone? Bible never says we are saved by Faith alone this is a false man made protestant doctrine no Christian or early church fathers believed in Read James 2:24. Plus you claim Catholics arent Christian then according to your logic there were no Christians for the first 1500 years till the Protestant reformation took place, the word catholic means universal and was the church Christ established with Peter being his rock. A Christian is one who knows Christ Jesus is our Lord and the divine Son of God who came to take away the sins of the world with his death and resurrection at Calvary.

    • @georgeibrahim7945
      @georgeibrahim7945 5 лет назад +33

56pjr without the Catholic Church you wouldn’t even have the bible you have in your hands today it was the church which compiled the bible in the year 380Ad learn history and decided which 27 books out of a possible 300 were inspired and would be chosen in the New Testament. Problem with you protestants is you learn about Catholics from other protestants rather then asking Catholics.

START READING GODS HOLY SCRIPTURES MORE FOR YOURSELF THEN YOU WON'T HAVE A CHANCE AT BEING MIS-LED AND MIS-GUIDED,
YOU WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY FALSE DOCTRINE FOR YOURSELF BY HAVING STUDIED GODS HOLY SCRIPTURES BEING MORE SCRIPTURALLY PREPARED TO THEN BEING ABLE TO IDENTIFY FALSE TEACHINGS!!!
      *2 TIMOTHY 2:14-19 NKJV*
14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.
17 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort,
18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.
19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

He took my politeness as an "in" to join him in learning and understanding the bible according to his religion. I explained to him that I am a Catholic- I was born Catholic, I wandered for many years questioning my faith, but Jesus helped me realize that the Catholic Church is truly where I belong to learn of his love, wisdom and guidance. Needless to say, my conversation needed to end when he started to intimate that the Catholic Church has been infiltrated by Satan, and I am now following false prophets.....I wished him all the blessings of our lord Jesus, and went on my way, very content and comforted that I now know and am strong in my faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church- and that my faith has led me to your amazing weekly teachings!!!

Seyi, I think the best answer is that we don't know what matters, beyond what has been revealed by Christ. We know we have commandments from Christ that emphasize love, and we know that obedience to those commandments as well as other teachings impacts our relationship with Christ, but much beyond that, we aren't the Judge. I think someone in a rain forest tribe, who will biologically die without ever having an opportunity to even hear the name Jesus Christ, is not cut off from salvation. Christ told us Capernaum would be judged differently than Tyre, which in that metaphor never received the same signs as did Capernaum.

I’m in the same place. I’m 19, chronically ill, and still live at home. Most of the time I feel so isolated in my faith, because my mom is somewhat lukewarm in hers, and my dad is a militant atheist and anti-catholic. I definitely will be praying for you and offering my sufferings for you to find the deep virtuous friendships that you long for!! Just know (and this has been a comfort for me lately in my time of loneliness) that all of us are inextricably united in Christ through His Mystical and physical Body. And we are also always with at least five persons: The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit, our guardian angel, and Mary. I hope that you find what your heart is searching for :)

@@ilkka4716 how on earth can you jump to a false doctrine, noh only that, but the Bible is literally riddled with text showing how false Catholicism is.
The Roman Catholic Church sees Peter as the first pope upon whom God had chosen to build His church (Matthew 16:18). It holds that he had authority (primacy) over the other apostles. The Roman Catholic Church maintains that sometime after the recorded events of the book of Acts, the Apostle Peter became the first bishop of Rome, and that the Roman bishop was accepted by the early church as the central authority among all of the churches. It teaches that God passed Peter’s apostolic authority to those who later filled his seat as bishop of Rome. This teaching that God passed on Peter’s apostolic authority to the subsequent bishops is referred to as “apostolic succession.”
The Roman Catholic Church also holds that Peter and the subsequent popes were and are infallible when addressing issues “ex cathedra,” from their position and authority as pope. It teaches that this infallibility gives the pope the ability to guide the church without error. The Roman Catholic Church claims that it can trace an unbroken line of popes back to St. Peter, citing this as evidence that it is the true church, since, according to their interpretation of Matthew 16:18, Christ built His church upon Peter.
But while Peter was central in the early spread of the gospel (part of the meaning behind Matthew 16:18-19), the teaching of Scripture, taken in context, nowhere declares that he was in authority over the other apostles, or over the church (having primacy). See Acts 15:1-23; Galatians 2:1-14; and 1 Peter 5:1-5. Nor is it ever taught in Scripture that the bishop of Rome, or any other bishop, was to have primacy over the church. Scripture does not even explicitly record Peter ever being in Rome. Rather there is only one reference in Scripture of Peter writing from “Babylon,” a name sometimes applied to Rome (1 Peter 5:13). Primarily upon this and the historical rise of the influence of the Bishop of Rome come the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching of the primacy of the bishop of Rome. However, Scripture shows that Peter’s authority was shared by the other apostles (Ephesians 2:19-20), and the “loosing and binding” authority attributed to him was likewise shared by the local churches, not just their church leaders (see Matthew 18:15-19; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 2 Corinthians 13:10; Titus 2:15; 3:10-11).
Also, nowhere does Scripture state that, in order to keep the church from error, the authority of the apostles was passed on to those they ordained (the idea behind apostolic succession). Apostolic succession is “read into” those verses that the Roman Catholic Church uses to support this doctrine (2 Timothy 2:2; 4:2-5; Titus 1:5; 2:1; 2:15; 1 Timothy 5:19-22). Paul does NOT call on believers in various churches to receive Titus, Timothy, and other church leaders based on their authority as bishops or their having apostolic authority, but rather based upon their being fellow laborers with him (1 Corinthians 16:10; 16:16; 2 Corinthians 8:23).
What Scripture DOES teach is that false teachings would arise even from among church leaders, and that Christians were to compare the teachings of these later church leaders with Scripture, which alone is infallible (Matthew 5:18; Psalm 19:7-8; 119:160; Proverbs 30:5; John 17:17; 2 Peter 1:19-21). The Bible does not teach that the apostles were infallible, apart from what was written by them and incorporated into Scripture. Paul, in talking to the church leaders in the large city of Ephesus, makes note of coming false teachers. To fight against their error does NOT commend them to “the apostles and those who would carry on their authority”; rather, Paul commends them to “God and to the word of His grace” (Acts 20:28-32). It is Scripture that was to be the infallible measuring stick for teaching and practice (2 Timothy 3:16-17), not apostolic successors. It is by examining the Scriptures that teachings are shown to be true or false (Acts 17:10-12).
Was Peter the first pope? The answer, according to Scripture, is a clear and emphatic “no.” Peter nowhere claims supremacy over the other apostles. Nowhere in his writings (1 and 2 Peter) did the Apostle Peter claim any special role, authority, or power over the church. Nowhere in Scripture does Peter, or any other apostle, state that their apostolic authority would be passed on to successors. Yes, the Apostle Peter had a leadership role among the disciples. Yes, Peter played a crucial role in the early spread of the gospel (Acts chapters 1-10). Yes, Peter was the “rock” that Christ predicted he would be (Matthew 16:18). However, these truths about Peter in no way give support to the concept that Peter was the first pope, or that he was the “supreme leader” over the apostles, or that his authority would be passed on to the bishops of Rome. Peter himself points us all to the true Shepherd and Overseer of the church, the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:25).

Father Mike, as a Protestant, I want to say that I appreciate you. I appreciate your candor, your passion, your energy, and your heart. There is a need for dialogue. There is a need for civility. Christ prayed that we would be unified. I appreciate your attitude, and clearly, your teaching is thoughtful and well-intentioned. It makes my heart glad to know that there are godly men like you upholding the faith in Catholic churches around the country, and I am glad you have this ministry. I am glad that you have created a platform and are using your gift of teaching to instruct believers in matters of the faith. It is needed, and I pray for continued blessings and success in your ministry. I mean all of this truly.
I don't have to believe in the authority of the magisterium to accept the canon of the Bible. I can make that determination myself (with some divine guidance). Recently, I have read some passages from 1 Clement, The Shepherd of Hermas, and the Letter of Barnabas, and let me tell you ... I understand why these were left out of the canon. They made the right call ... but, I don't need to accept their authority to agree with them. I'm reading the same books they were. I'm seeing the same things they were seeing, and I am coming to the same conclusion. How can that be? I would say, because the same Holy Spirit which spoke to them as they were reading and deciding is the same Spirit which looks over my shoulder and gives me discernment when I am reading and deciding. I don't defer to the Roman magisterium. I defer to the Holy Spirit-just as the Roman magisterium did. They too deferred to the Holy Spirit when the councils came to this conclusion. That makes the Holy Spirit the ultimate authority-not the magisterium. The magisterium is just a middle man, and I don't have to go through them-not when I have access to the same Holy Spirit as they do. They are not "above me," and they must be submissive and open to the Spirit same as me. In this regard, we are not different.
Now, I appreciate their wisdom. I appreciate their thoughtfulness and care ... but, the magisterium has not always gotten everything correct-which makes sense, because they are men-subject to the same sinful nature we all are, but ... that said, you Catholics do a VERY good job on these things generally, lol! I think we Protestants would do well to "peek" at your Catholic theological homework sometimes, because the work is often meticulous and excellent ...
On Martin Luther cutting the deuterocanonical books-I agree with you. They should probably still be used in the Bible. One of the proof texts for Sola Scriptura that Protestants like to use is II Timothy 3:16 ... but, in context, Paul was clearly referring to the Septuagint indirectly-which included those books. Now, I sort of see why the Reformers cut them, because they were not in the Masoretic text, and, I think there is a case to be made for the Old Testament coming from the Hebrew tradition, so lets use the Hebrew canon ... but, the **APOSTLE** Paul seems to indicate at least indirectly that the second canon was "scripture," so ... I don't see why the Reformers feel justified in going against Paul ... Still need to consult a Protestant theologian to explain that one to me!
But the other thing you miss is that it wasn't ONLY the "magisterium" and those two councils which decided on the canon in the fourth century. The early church collectively made that decision many, many times for hundreds of years leading up to that point ... and it was *by the Spirit* which they made that decision ... The Corinthians decided to make copies of Paul's letters and spread them around. Were they members of the magisterium? By whose authority were they under to decide that was scripture worth preserving and spreading? What about pastors which chose not to do readings from the Gospel of Thomas in their services because they believed it to be heretical. Were they members of the "magisterium?" Clearly not. The problem with your position is that you ignore the role the Holy Spirit played in the process of canon formation, then, you place all of the credit and authority with the "magisterium" when it was actually the Holy Spirit the entire time. The only thing the councils of Rome and Carthage did was affirm the work the Holy Spirit had already done ... but I don't need their "infallible stamp" to convince myself of that fact. I can read the books and make that determination on my own-just as the early church did and just as the councils did ... and, I *do* find it comforting to know we all agree-as we should-because the same Spirit testifies to us all ...
So, yeah ... I do not buy your argument that as a Protestant I "accept the authority of the magisterium." I accept the authority of the Holy Spirit-which is where the magisterium should be claiming they get their authority from-but ... for me, they are just one voice. Sometimes God speaks through them and sometimes He doesn't-it's just them giving their opinion-but ... that's why God equips each Christian with their own truth detector: the Holy Spirit. And I don't fault Catholics for looking to the magisterium just like I don't fault Baptists for looking to their theologians for answers, but ... sometimes, "authorities" are wrong, and Martin Luther was right to say, "His holiness is not above scripture!" when the Pope claimed his authority superseded scripture. Sometimes, you have to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit and trust it even when it goes against the supposed "authorities," but ... that path must never be taken lightly. It takes a lot of prayer and meditation (and reflection upon the scriptures) to make sure that voice you are hearing is the Holy Spirit and not your own.
On Sola Scriptura, I believe the spirit of it-that the Pope and tradition should not be superseding the Bible, but ... Yes, Sola Scriptura is NOT in the Bible. I have ALL KINDS of problems with it ... I think we need the church and tradition as practical matters, but ... in the Reformation, it became "the Bible, Church, and Tradition" versus "Scripture Alone", and I REALLY hate the framing of that whole debate, because it COMPLETELY leaves out the Holy Spirit, which ... that is the third person of the trinity and the one who came after Jesus left ... Why isn't He even in the conversation? How are we leaving Him out of the debate when He had a role in authoring scripture and is the one who gives the church discernment and inspiration which led to healthy traditions? So ... I just don't like any of this framing and would prefer a complete restructuring with a new doctrinal framework which puts the third person of the trinity at the center instead of "infallible books" (which can easily be misinterpreted by the reader without guidance from the Spirit) and "infallible human teachers" (who, if they are hearing correctly from God, is only because of the ministry of the Spirit) ... which are roughly the Protestant and Catholic positions presently ...

You are very gracious in your response, but I’m not sure you understand the magisterium - it’s infallible in regard to doctrine. The Catholic Church supports individuals reading scripture and recognizing the Holy Spirit working in us while doing so. But not when it comes to doctrine. Case in point: since the reformation we have THOUSANDS of Protestant denominations who are teaching and believing different things, from baptism to salvation, all claiming it was brought to them by the Holy Spirit. Christ prayed for us to be unified, yet the Holy Spirit is inspiring a magnitude of different beliefs? Clearly Christ didn’t want that, which is why he left final authority to Peter and those who came after him in Apostolic lineage.
Imagine if the founding fathers of the United States just left the constitution to be interpreted by every individual citizen and not the Supreme Court. 😬 Same concept only a lot more at stake.

There is no weakness in the support of Sola Scriptura. It is biblical and is taught throughout the Bible.
      Jesus was a protestant.
      Isaiah 8:20
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
      Matthew 15:9
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
This is very interesting. I want to present something I recently came across.
If you read the converts catechism of Catholic Doctrine and go to part II, Section II, Chapter 5, number 3(the third commandment).
      Q. What is the third commandment?
      A. The third commandment is remember the Sabbath that thou keep holy the Sabbath day.
      Q. Which is the Sabbath day?
      A. Saturday is the Sabbath day.
      Q. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
      A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.
      Q. Why did the Catholic Church substitute Sunday for saturday?
      A. The Church substituted Sunday for Saturday, because Christ rose from the dead on a Sunday, and the Holy Ghost descended upon the apostles on a Sunday.
      Q. By what authority did the church substitute Sunday for saturday?
      A. The church substituted Sunday for Saturday by the plentitude of that divine power which Jesus Christ bestowed upon her.
      Q. What does the third commandment?
      A. The third commandment commands us to sanctify Sunday as the Lord's Day.
      According to their(Catholic Church) doctrine
The 2nd commandment in the Bible is not observed, the Sabbath was replaced by Sunday and the 10th commandment was broken into two parts thus fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel 7:25
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
The only commandment related to time is the 4th commandment.
God did not change the 4th commandment nor does he change. God does not change. He does not break his covenant.
The 10 commandments of God are a reflection of his character.
      Jesus is truth. John 14:6
God's word is truth. John 17:17
      Psalm 119:142,151
      God's law is truth.
      John 4:24
God's people worship him in spirit and in truth.
Malachi 3:6 - God never changes
      Psalm 111:7,8
God's commandments stand fast for ever and ever and are done in truth and uprightness.
      Psalm 89:34
God does not break his covenant.
The new covenant is not about the doing away with God's law, it's about where he puts it(in your heart; Hebrews 8:10).
God's saints, remnant keep his law: Revelation 12:17, Revelation 14:12, Revelation 22:14
I pray you study this out and seek what the word of the Lord teaches.
After all the warning in Revelation 14 is about worship of the true God.
The Pope is also known as: The Annuario Pontificio, the official directory of the Holy See, describes the office of the pope by the following titles: Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church.
The Pope is known as the vicar of Christ. The word “vicar” means to be a representative of; the pope is our leader who acts on behalf of Christ.
Christ never gave any man on earth his authority which the Catholic Church teaches was given to the Pope. Claiming that is blasphemy. That's why the Pope is referred to as the anti-christ or 666.

St. Paul tells the Corinthians, “I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you” (1 Cor. 11:2), and he commands the Thessalonians, “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15). He even goes so far as to order, “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us” (2 Thess. 3:6).
To make sure that the apostolic tradition would be passed down after the deaths of the apostles, Paul told Timothy, “[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). In this passage he refers to the first four generations of apostolic succession-his own generation, Timothy’s generation, the generation Timothy will teach, and the generation they in turn will teach.
“Of the dogmas and messages preserved in the Church, some we possess from written teaching and others we receive from the tradition of the apostles, handed on to us in mystery. In respect to piety, both are of the same force. No one will contradict any of these, no one, at any rate, who is even moderately versed in matters ecclesiastical. Indeed, were we to try to reject unwritten customs as having no great authority, we would unwittingly injure the gospel in its vitals; or rather, we would reduce [Christian] message to a mere term”- St. Basil the Great (The Holy Spirit 27:66 [A.D. 375]).
“It is needful also to make use of tradition, for not everything can be gotten from sacred Scripture. The holy apostles handed down some things in the scriptures, other things in tradition”- St. Epiphanius of Salamis (Medicine Chest Against All Heresies 61:6 [A.D. 375]).
“But in regard to those observances which we carefully attend and which the whole world keeps, and which derive not from Scripture but from Tradition, we are given to understand that they are recommended and ordained to be kept, either by the apostles themselves or by plenary [ecumenical] councils, the authority of which is quite vital in the Church”- St. Augustine of Hippo (Letter to Januarius [A.D. 400]).
“[Paul commands,] ‘Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you have been taught, whether by word or by our letter’ [2 Thess. 2:15]. From this it is clear that they did not hand down everything by letter, but there is much also that was not written. Like that which was written, the unwritten too is worthy of belief. So let us regard the tradition of the Church also as worthy of belief. Is it a tradition? Seek no further”- St. John Chysostom (Homilies on Second Thessalonians [A.D. 402]).
“With great zeal and closest attention, therefore, I frequently inquired of many men, eminent for their holiness and doctrine, how I might, in a concise and, so to speak, general and ordinary way, distinguish the truth of the Catholic faith from the falsehood of heretical depravity.
“I received almost always the same answer from all of them-that if I or anyone else wanted to expose the frauds and escape the snares of the heretics who rise up, and to remain intact and in sound faith, it would be necessary, with the help of the Lord, to fortify that faith in a twofold manner: first, of course, by the authority of divine law [Scripture] and then by the tradition of the Catholic Church.
“Here, perhaps, someone may ask: ‘If the canon of the scriptures be perfect and in itself more than suffices for everything, why is it necessary that the authority of ecclesiastical interpretation be joined to it?’ Because, quite plainly, sacred Scripture, by reason of its own depth, is not accepted by everyone as having one and the same meaning. . . .
“Thus, because of so many distortions of such various errors, it is highly necessary that the line of prophetic and apostolic interpretation be directed in accord with the norm of the ecclesiastical and Catholic meaning”- St. Vincent of Lerins (The Notebooks [A.D. 434]).

Bottom line... Sacred Scriptures comes from TRADITION. Sacred Scripture did not even exist in the form we have today until the 4th century. But the Church existed from year 1. So for 400 years the Church was guided by TRADITION, not scripture. And it is this TRADITION that was used to inform the Catholic Church as to which writings would be considered the word of God and thus Sacred Scripture.

YOU: So for 400 years the Church was guided by TRADITION, not scripture.
ME: The Catholic Church doesn't teach that. The church was completely guided by tradition up to the point of all the books of the NT being written, which was the end of the 1st century approximately. Thereafter, the NT writings were in circulation and read in the churches. Now, it is true that the NT canon was not formally established by church council until the 4th century, but there are ancient lists which contained MOST of the NT books even in the 2nd-3rd centuries. The earliest known COMPLETE list of the 27 books of the New Testament is found in a letter written by Athanasius, a 4th-century bishop of Alexandria, dated to 367 AD.

@@morelmaster The problem wasn't fully when each of the books of the New Covenant was written, but discerning which prospective books and letters to include. There were far more than 27, and even among the books selected, there were multiple manuscripts. So, it was bigger than 'Matthew, in, Thomas, out,' as in the case of Matthew's gospel there were almost 40 different versions to choose from. Now, all Christendom (Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant) trusts those bishops got it right (at least with the New Covenant).

I agree with you. Just saying that some of the NT writings were already considered Scripture during the time of the Apostles and were being used in churches.
And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. (2 Peter 3:15-16)

Sola scriptura is in the Bible and the teaching is very plain and clear that even a 2nd grader can understand:
      Isaiah 8:20
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
So therefore if you believe it's (Sola Scriptura) not in the Bible then you do not follow the Jesus of the Bible. There is only one truth, one way and one life and that is Jesus.
      Mark 7:7

As someone who comes from the mixed background of protestant/catholic I'm so glad to confirm everything fr. Mike presented is true. Protestant history of the Bible is so messed up and was a fruit of very egocentric movement amongst Luther's folowers and himself. The Bible is common masterpiece of God and Christians that was setp up by the Catholic magesterium over the centuries, more specifically in the first 5 centuries of Christianity. That's why we should be aware of the changes being made 500 years ago that were not accurate at all and left some people without the insight of other parts of the Bible that would most definitelly help them in their life and understanding God's teaching.

If you were born and baptized Catholic you were already born again. The Gospel of John (3:5) says we must be born from above (Greek translation) with WATER and the Spirit. That is baptism. The entire Bible is filled with the image of salvation through water.

You were born again when baptized.
      St. Justin Martyr
“As many as are persuaded and believe that what we [Christians] teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly, and instructed to pray and to entreat God with fasting, for the remission of their sins that are past, we pray and fast with them. Then they are brought by us where there is water and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For, in the name of God, the Father . . . and of our Savior Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit [Matt. 28:19], they then receive the washing with water. For Christ also said, ‘Unless you are born again, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’ [John 3:3]” (First Apology 61 [A.D. 151]).
      St. Irenaeus
“‘And [Naaman] dipped himself . . . seven times in the Jordan’ [2 Kgs. 5:14]. It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but [this served] as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions, being spiritually regenerated as newborn babes, even as the Lord has declared: ‘Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’” (Fragment 34 [A.D. 190]).
      Tertullian
“[N]o one can attain salvation without baptism, especially in view of the declaration of the Lord, who says, ‘Unless a man shall be born of water, he shall not have life’” (Baptism 12:1 [A.D. 203]).
      St. Hippolytus
“The Father of immortality sent the immortal Son and Word into the world, who came to man in order to wash him with water and the Spirit; and he, begetting us again to incorruption of soul and body, breathed into us the Spirit of life, and endued us with an incorruptible panoply. If, therefore, man has become immortal, he will also be God. And if he is made God by water and the Holy Spirit after the regeneration of the laver he is found to be also joint-heir with Christ after the resurrection from the dead. Wherefore I preach to this effect: Come, all ye kindreds of the nations, to the immortality of the baptism” (Discourse on the Holy Theophany 8 [A.D. 217]).
      The Recognitions of Clement
“But you will perhaps say, ‘What does the baptism of water contribute toward the worship of God?’ In the first place, because that which has pleased God is fulfilled. In the second place, because when you are regenerated and born again of water and of God, the frailty of your former birth, which you have through men, is cut off, and so . . . you shall be able to attain salvation; but otherwise it is impossible. For thus has the true prophet [Jesus] testified to us with an oath: ‘Verily, I say to you, that unless a man is born again of water . . . he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’” (The Recognitions of Clement 6:9 [A.D. 221]).
      St. Cyprian of Carthage
“[When] they receive also the baptism of the Church . . . then finally can they be fully sanctified and be the sons of God . . . since it is written, ‘Except a man be born again of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God’” (Letters 71[72]:1 [A.D. 253]).
      Council of Carthage VII
“And in the gospel our Lord Jesus Christ spoke with his divine voice, saying, ‘Except a man be born again of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’ . . . Unless therefore they receive saving baptism in the Catholic Church, which is one, they cannot be saved, but will be condemned with the carnal in the judgment of the Lord Christ” (Seventh Carthage [A.D. 256]).
      St. Cyril of Jerusalem
“Since man is of a twofold nature, composed of body and soul, the purification also is twofold: the corporeal for the corporeal and the incorporeal for the incorporeal. The water cleanses the body, and the Spirit seals the soul. . . . When you go down into the water, then, regard not simply the water, but look for salvation through the power of the Spirit. For without both you cannot attain to perfection. It is not I who says this, but the Lord Jesus Christ, who has the power in this matter. And he says, ‘Unless a man be born again,’ and he adds the words ‘of water and of the Spirit,’ ‘he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’ He that is baptized with water, but is not found worthy of the Spirit, does not receive the grace in perfection. Nor, if a man be virtuous in his deeds, but does not receive the seal by means of the water, shall he enter the kingdom of heaven. A bold saying, but not mine; for it is Jesus who has declared it” (Catechetical Lectures 3:4 [A.D. 350]).
      St. Athanasius
“[A]s we are all from earth and die in Adam, so being regenerated from above of water and Spirit, in the Christ we are all quickened” (Four Discourses Against the Arians 3:26[33] [A.D. 360]).
      St. Basil the Great
“This then is what it means to be ‘born again of water and Spirit’: Just as our dying is effected in the water [Rom. 6:3; Col. 2:12-13], our living is wrought through the Spirit. In three immersions and an equal number of invocations the great mystery of baptism is completed in such a way that the type of death may be shown figuratively, and that by the handing on of divine knowledge the souls of the baptized may be illuminated. If, therefore, there is any grace in the water, it is not from the nature of water, but from the Spirit’s presence there” (The Holy Spirit 15:35 [A.D. 375]).

Satan already caused division throughout history, especially the Reformation period, and now he is going after the only true Church, the Catholic Church, because his time is short. If someone is not teaching the truth, shouldn't they be excommunicated? You think they should be allowed to stay and teach error? Heretics being burned at the stake was done in a very short period of history by a few corrupt people, does that make the whole Church wrong for 2000 years?

@@dahelmang St. Peter excommunicated the first heretic. Protestants did plenty of burning of Catholics and other Protestant sects they disagreed with.
If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex-monk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517.
If you belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.
If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560.
If you are a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Seabury in the American colonies in the 17th century.
If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.
If you are a Methodist, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.
If you are a Unitarian, Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.
If you are a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, N.Y., in 1829.
If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1605.
If you are of the Dutch Reformed church, you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in New York in 1628.
If you are a member of the Churches of Christ your church began near the beginning of the 19th century in New England. Abner Jones, Barton Stone and Alexander Campbell were some of the most well known originators of your religion.
If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.
If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.
If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as "Church of the Nazarene," "Pentecostal Gospel," "Holiness Church," "Pilgrim Holiness Church," "Jehovah's Witnesses," your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past century.
If you are Catholic, you know that your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God, and it is still the same Church.
“The Lord says to Peter: ‘I say to you,’ he says, ‘that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.’ . . . On him [Peter] he builds the Church, and to him he gives the command to feed the sheep [John 21:17], and although he assigns a like power to all the apostles, yet he founded a single chair [cathedra], and he established by his own authority a source and an intrinsic reason for that unity. Indeed, the others were that also which Peter was [i.e., apostles], but a primacy is given to Peter, whereby it is made clear that there is but one Church and one chair. So too, all [the apostles] are shepherds, and the flock is shown to be one, fed by all the apostles in single-minded accord. If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he [should] desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?”- St. Cyprian of Carthage (The Unity of the Catholic Church 4; 1st edition [A.D. 251]).

      *JOHN 3:15-17 (NKJV)*
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
      *MARK 16:16 (NKJV)*
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
      ●*CONFESS:*
*MATTHEW 10:32-33 (NKJV)* 32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
*ROMANS 10:9 - 11 (NKJV)* 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
      ●*REPENT*
      *ACTS 2:38 (NKJV)*
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
*ACTS 17:30 (NKJV)* 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,
●*MUST BE WATER BAPTIZED* (Body Fully placed in water and brought right back up, not sprinkling, Female can not baptize no one, only A Male Already Baptized Brother of The Church of Christ can Baptize Believers):
      *MARK 16:16 (NKJV)*
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
*GALATIANS 3:27 (NKJV)* 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
*ROMANS 6:4 NKJV* 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
      *JOHN 3:3-5 (NKJV)*
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
      *ACTS 2:38 NKJV*
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
●*LIVE A WORKING FAITHFUL* *LIFE UNTIL DEATH:* *REVELATION 2:10 (NKJV)* 10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
●*TEACH THE LOSS WHAT* *YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT* *SOUL SALVATION:*
*MATTHEW 28:18 - 20 (NKJV)* 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

I am a protestant and I love Jesus that’s why I want to go to a church which Jesus himself founded. And because of reaserchers that I have conducted I gather some evidences that leads me to convert to Catholicism because being a protestant is chaotic there are thousands of existing denomination in the protestant world and all of them claims that they are the truth. Where in the Catholic it is the only church that did not changed its doctrine since it was first establish and lead by St Peter. I was an anti Catholic then but now I realize that maybe I should go back home because my Mother is a devoted Catholic and I used to go to mass every Sunday until I was converted to Pentecostal oneness which have this doctrine that God is a One person he was the Father in the Old testament the Son in the New testament and the Holy Ghost in the modern church I find this doctrine unbiblical because the Bible itself tells that Our God is a Triune God he is Three Persons in One being.

@@wesleysimelane3423 The Bible the Catholic Church gave us is perfect. It is man who is imperfect in his misinterpetation. That is due to Luther's heresy.

“And if you ever are visiting in cities, do not inquire simply where the house of the Lord is-for the others, sects of the impious, attempt to call their dens ‘houses of the Lord’-nor ask merely where the Church is, but where is the Catholic Church. For this is the name peculiar to this holy Church, the mother of us all, which is the spouse of our Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God” (ibid., 18:26).

Thank you Fr Mike for this great talk. In one of our Bible study discussions last week, someone asked where in the Bible is the word purgatory found? I was so happy to come across your talk on scriptures and church teaching. That is exactly what we all should be aware of. I forwarded your talk to my friends. Hopefully they will understand that not everything we believe in comes from the Bible alone. God bless you for all the good work you are doing for our Church. We need more priests like you!

      Mike's teaching is not truth.

Christ founded a Church not a book and chosen the Apostles to establish His Church. There was a time that there was no New Testament the Apostles had the Old Testament to teach from teaching as Christ had taught to them orally so you also have Apostolic Tradition.
As for terminology used to express a teaching such as the Holy Trinity in which there is one God Who is three Divine Persons the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit the actual term the Holy Trinity is found no where in Scripture but yet all Baptized Christians believe in the Holy Trinity. This could also be applied to the Communion of Saints, Transubstnation, and Purgatory in which these words cannot be found in Scripture but we know we are joined by God through Christ, we know during the consecration the hosts become the Body and Blood of Christ, and we know that there is a final purification after death which is why we pray for the souls of those who gone to rest. A person could use Scripture to support to prove their side regarding these matters even using historical evidence but it doesn't matter if a person refuses to believe. For example with Purgatory which is controversial with Protestants they don't seem to realize Purgatory came from Judaism a cleansing fire and purification is evident in Scripture the Jews call it Gehenna and remember Christ and the Apostles were Jewish they would had believed in a final purification after death.

I have been researching with an open mind and praying heavily on this. (I have been anti-denominational for years, and have studied/attended many different churches throughout my life thus far).
The main things that have prevented me from converting to Catholicism are: 1. Unsure how I feel regarding prayers to saints. 2. I struggle with the notion of Mary being a co-redemtrix, as well as being held on the same level as Jesus Christ himself.
    3. The treatment of non-Catholic Christians by the church. (This, I know, is a tricky one, as we all sin, and “the sin of man does not define the heart of God”. I am simply saying that I have seen a trend with Catholics being hateful towards protestants rather than having a loving debate with what you believe to be a misguided Christian. I know “true, Christ-like Love is NOT the same as being nice always”, and that is jot what I am referring to.
    Which leads me to 4.
    4. The idea that you cannot be saved if you are a Non-Catholic Christian. This is something I struggle with, as the people who I respect dearly due to their selfless, faithful, humble love and determination to follow Christ and worship through their actions daily are ALL non-Catholics. I have met few Catholics that have moved me this way. Regardless of this, I cannot believe that every person who has NOT been Catholic but has lived a life devoted to following Christ is not saved because they were not part of “the original church”.
I am diving into the debate of solo-scriptura and this is not a major red flag as it is with Protestants, as I can see the points from both sides.
I have been debating also going to a local Mass to feel it out in person, but am nervous due to my previous encounters with Catholics.
I say this with transparency and eager to hear what Catholics think.

    • @kentd4762
      @kentd4762 Год назад +6

Blessings on your search for the Truth. A few things: Catholics ask saints (souls that are in heaven) to pray for us--just like you or I would ask a friend or family member or people in our congregation to pray for us or our intentions. Souls in heaven are no longer limited by space and time and are in the presence of God, so they are in a great position to pray for us. Though you may not be familiar with her, a wonderful saint from the late 1800's who is very popular because of her childlike trust in God is St. Therese of Lisieux (in France)--a Carmelite nun. She died young of TB, but one of the things she is noted for saying is that she "wanted to spend her heaven doing good on earth."
Mary is not on the same level as Jesus; she is a human creature like the rest of us. Yes, she is held in high esteem because she was given the honor of birthing and raising Jesus, and like the Archangel Gabriel said when he greeted her--she is "full of grace" which also puts her at a higher (but not divine) level than the rest of us. We honor her as Jesus' mother and our mother (Jesus made her our spiritual mother right before he died on the cross--as exemplified by his "giving" her to St. John the Apostle). If it is a stumbling block to you, I wouldn't get too hung up on the title "co-redemptrix" as better understanding that can take some time and prayer (took me over 25 yrs).
I wouldn't let uncharitable Catholics (by no means unique; just read some of the Protestant remarks on Catholic YT channels) stand in the way either. We can use the few bad apples in any group as an excuse. Sadly, Church history, especially post-Reformation, is replete with persecutions of Catholics by Protestants and vice-versa.
I'm not sure where you're getting that non-Catholics cannot be saved. Fr. Mike in this video mentions "Dei Verbum"--the teaching document about Divine Revelation. Another teaching document that was written at the same time (early 60's, Vatican II) is called Lumen Gentium. It speaks to God's salvation for various peoples--as they seek truth. A quick summary of it can be found in Wikipedia (ref. chapter 2 of it).
Though you don't mention it directly, at Mass is where the Body and Blood, Jesus' true and real presence is made manifest and Catholics receive Him in Holy Communion. As a Catholic, I always wonder why Protestants don't take Jesus at His word in John chapter 6 and at the Last Supper when He says, "This is my Body" and "This is my Blood." The Eucharist as it is called is how Jesus stays present to the Church and the world in a material way--just like when He walked the earth--as opposed to simply only a spiritual presence. Jesus is literally present--in sacramental form--in every Catholic church/chapel. Truly present--to be visited, spoken to, received. Even though He ascended to heaven, He remains with us until the end of the age--just like he said in his true and real presence--body, blood, soul and divinity. His greatest gift to humanity--his abiding presence with us.
      Again, all the best.

I once believed as a Catholic. However after much research I had to leave because of videos like this.
Here is the doctrine of sola scriptura.
      Mark 7:7
7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
      John 5:39
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
Jesus is the word of God made flesh. He is the way, the truth, the life.

Since the first "scripture" wasn't written down until about the year 50, what did the early Church use? Oh yeah. They used an oral tradition, a handed-down faith tradition. I'm happy to be fed these short sermons through my home feed, I learn things that I've had questions about as I live in a community with the Catholic Church. As I've said before, I stopped corresponding with Bishop Barron for reasons of disapproval in the Catholic Church perverting scripture to approve the LGBTQ, albeit on a narrow road; we all have a narrow road to heaven and I can assure you the LGBTQ will be kicked off my high wire. Anyway, there is much we could discuss; trying to maintain my promise to Bishop Barron to let the Catholic Church go about its business in faith believing through hard work and repitition that the world will be eradicated of the LGBTQ by putting more heat on the wound instead of ice, I do continue to listen to both of you and more because I love my Jewish brothers and sisters.
I see their hate and to a certain degree understand it and have no problems avoiding those who do not wish to discuss common ground, it is their family history we are debating and refurbishing to our speculations. Jesus is the Master, and by my knowledge of the Bible, he's given me permission to be equally as stubborn but I had better be righteous about it or else I'll have some wounds to lick. So, I have this question for you: "Why did the Catholic church decide to set up church to be a reflection of the Jewish synagogue when Jesus was quite simple in his teachings and profound in doing so?" To be sure you understand me:
    1) You build grand churches, like Solomon did, and yet God through his profits spit on them saying "I don't need the temple, you do."
    2) You say priests are there to help people repent and seek forgiveness when Jesus said he did away with the need for priests, build a a relationship with God through me and take out the middle man. Here is where I see a very deep divide between the Catholic Church and my Jewish brothers and sisters in that the Jews' priests were married men, with children and the Catholic Church is not leading the same Christ; and from what my eyes have had to see all my life it could be the culprit in the rampant spread of LGBTQ because you foresake your woman for? Idol worship of a woman? To initiate a conversation of spiritual marriage between a man and woman thereby foresaking the tents God gave us to fine tune our souls? (This last question returns to their age old battle over slave labor when the Northern tribes seceded from the 2 southern of Judah. Northern became idol worshipers who foresaked the blood and fell to Babylon first, dragging their Judean brothers and sisters behind them in the wake of their perversions of truth, facts.) Truthfully, I am not trusting of why you would foresake a woman when it is apparent to me how nice it is for you and others to form a union with one; you are a good looking man, I'm sure your mother would have liked grandchildren. 🙂I felt the same with Bishop Barron, as if a ponzi scheme to be a fill in for when their husbands fall short of Jesus.
    3) Rules, where Jesus took 613 laws and boiled them down to one, both you and my stubborn Jewish brothers and sisters didn't stop there, you added more and our own U.S. supreme court website said the human brain cannot retain, let alone obey, too many laws. James 2:10 is helpful here for those who really strive to be diligent in their law abiding, and as for me I'm a rebel through and through and thank God for Jesus!

What's confusing you my brother. Our God is not a God of confusion
      Gods will be done...
Mary had no choice here. This is a false teaching which has led many astray from who God really is
      2 Samuel 7:16 (1000 years before Christ)
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me your throne will be established
      forever.
      God stands on His promises
      Isaiah 14:24
The LORD Almighty has sworn, "Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen.
      Propechy(between 800-700 years before Jesus
      7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
They give praise and thanks to Mary for this
      Isaiah 42:8
I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.
We can see the Fathers work detailed in the genelogy of Matthew and luke
Where He shows He kept His promise to King david( please look that's alot to put here)
I understand this may be a hard thing to grasp. As people first say. Free will. As if God was a tyrant.
Which is not the case. It was Gods will that Mary was created. Theres a difference between us. Who have no prophecy written.
      This was His craftsmanship
This is where it gets heavy.....
I wanna go further back to this.
      Exodus 7:3
But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt,
      Exodus 9:12
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart and he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said to Moses.
      Nothing can stop Gods will
As was seen by King Herod
      Matthew 2:17
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
This is where Mary now has become a false idol
To say that she had options is to also say
She had the power to turn God into a liar.
Which is simply not the case
. God is creator of the universe. Truely
      And He made her
One person says to me. Well he knew she was going to say yes.....again. He made her for this. This is not force of will. This was His will these things should happen.
      Collosians 1:16
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him.
      2 Kings 2:16
As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, "Strike this army with blindness." So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.
The lesson of the Fig Tree
      Matthew 21:19
Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered.
      Many lessons in that. But
We see God is displaying His sovereignty over creation.
This is why Christ taught us to pray for Gods will
Because only His will can answer prayers.
      Because this is His creation
He shows us this many times is we look
      Acts 9:7
The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
This is also profound. Because we dont like to think of it this way. Its uncomfortable.
But this is who He Is.
      Roman's 9:9
For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”
10 Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad -in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls-she was told, “The older will serve the younger. 13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses,
“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
19 One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?” 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it
      Roman's 1:25
They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
      Matthew 7:13
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
As beautiful as a story it is that Mary said "yes" it drowns out the truth of Gods handiwork . And takes Glory from the Master Craftsman. Who is Our Elohim
      Luke 1:31
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
      This was not a question.
      Luke 11:27
As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you."
He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
      The Lord of All
      El Shaddai
      God Almighty
      The Great God

I was in your position. Protestatism is confusion. So many denominations all claiming to be "true." All divided. Why would God want division? Its the element of confusion. The name Protestant came from the word protestation!
How can there be thousand of denominations all claiming to be true. Yet, they don't believe fully of what Martin Luther protestations were and he's the one who founded it. Even more confusing

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

      ABSOLUTELY!!!!! NOT!!!!!!
THE ONLY FOUNDER THERE IS OF GODS CHURCH IS GOD HIMSELF, ABSOLUTELY NOT, BONIFACE III; THE WORD *"CATHOLIC"* IS NOT EVEN NO WHERE IN GODS HOLY SCRIPTURUES, NOT AT ALL, SO WHY ARE PEOPLE BELIEVING IN A "MANS MADE UN-SCRIPTURAL BELIEF SYSTEM" THAT IS NOT EVEN MENTIONED IN GODS SCRIPTURES NO WHERE AND WHY ARE PEOPLE BELIEVING IN BONIFACE III WHO WAS NOT MENTIONED NO WHERE IN GODS HOLY SCRIPTURUES TO THEN PEOPLE BELIEVING IN A MAN MADE BELIEF CALLED CATHOLIC WHICH GOD IN HIS HOLY SCRIPTURUES SPEAKS NOTHING ABOUT CATHOLIC BELIEF, THE CATHOLIC ASSIGNED FOUNDER BONIFACE III IS A FALSE UNSCRIPTURAL FOUNDER OF GODS CHURCH AND CATHOLIC IS ALL FALSE DOCTRINE AND A FALSE BELIEF SYSTEM AND CATHOLIC ANYTHING IS ALL ABSOLUTELY NOT OF GOD, YOU ALL THAT BELIEVE IN CATHOLIC ANYTHING BETTER WAKE UP AND SERIOUSLY START READING GODS HOLY SCRIPTURUES AND NOT THE SO CALL FALSE CATHOLIC MAN MADE DOCTRINE VERSION OF GODS SCRIPTURES, CATHOLIC SO CALL GODS HOLY SCRIPTURUES IS FULLY AND COMPLETELY FALSE!!!!!!!

“That is why it is surely necessary to avoid them [heretics], while cherishing with the utmost diligence the things pertaining to the Church, and to lay hold of the tradition of truth. . . . What if the apostles had not in fact left writings to us? Would it not be necessary to follow the order of tradition, which was handed down to those to whom they entrusted the churches?”- St. Irenaeus (Against Heresies 3:4:1) [A.D. 189]).
“Well, they preserving the tradition of the blessed doctrine derived directly from the holy apostles, Peter, James, John, and Paul, the sons receiving it from the father (but few were like the fathers), came by God’s will to us also to deposit those ancestral and apostolic seeds. And well I know that they will exult; I do not mean delighted with this tribute, but solely on account of the preservation of the truth, according as they delivered it. For such a sketch as this, will, I think, be agreeable to a soul desirous of preserving from loss the blessed tradition”- St. Clement of Alexandria (Miscellanies 1:1 [A.D. 208]).
“Again we write, again keeping to the apostolic traditions, we remind each other when we come together for prayer; and keeping the feast in common, with one mouth we truly give thanks to the Lord”- St. Athanasius (Festal Letters 2:7 [A.D. 330]).
John Chrysostom (Homilies on Second Thessalonians [A.D.

This gives me a lot to think about as a Protestant (although my theology is rather mixed 😂) especially pertaining to sola scriptura. But this doesn't consider the Eastern or Oriental Orthodox churches that would claim they are the true church that has apostolic succession and authority. These matters are quite confusing to me. Thankfully as a Christian, I believe that anyone who accepts Jesus as the Lord of their life and believes in their heart He was resurrected will enter the kingdom of God. The gospel is much less complicated and confusing, as I believe, than most denominations make it out to be. Our God is a gracious God.

John 17:17

Father Mike (or anyone who can rightly answer this question) please help me! I am a protestant that is feeling very very drawn to the Catholic church, but Im struggling with tradition and the magisterium and would love help. I have come to the point where I see the many points you are making here, and see the logic, and certainly see that the idea of "sola scriptura" is impossible and not what protestants actually practice (we all have our own "traditions" and theologies to explain the bible, etc). BUT- my big problem is when it seems like the tradition and the magisterium seem to *contradict* the Bible. The biggest one that hangs me up is the emphasis on Mary in the catholic dogma and some of the logic and arguments behind why she is so important, why she was sinless, why she is "the queen of heaven", etc. The problem I have with all of this is that Jesus seems to contradict the notion that Mary should be revered more than once in the Gospels. In particular, Matthew 12:45-50 and possibly the most contradictory to the idea of Marian devotion is Luke 11:27-28, where a woman calls out, "blessed is the mother who gave birth to you", and instead of agreeing Jesus immediately responds, "better are those who hear the word of God and obey it". Can someone explain to me how these verses do not contradict the notion of Marian devotion? Im not trying to be argumentative I really need help as I have yet to have anyone explain it and I so long to be Catholic but as a protestant the notion of Marian devotion is so alien and seems to disrespect Christ and I just need help with this. Thank you.

The only Marian dogmas you have to believe to enter the Church are the virgin birth, the Immaculate Conception (that she didn't sin) and the Assumption. Other than those, Marian devotion is not an essential part of the Catholic faith. I struggled a lot with what I call "Mary stuff" when I was entering the Church. I came to the point of telling Jesus, "if you want me to have a relationship with Mary then I want it too, but You know how hard that is for me so You're going to have to help." It's been 4 years and my relationship with her is growing little by little. The sections of the Bible you quoted are actually good news. When Jesus calls Mary, "woman" he is explaining that she is the new Eve just as He is the new Adam. When He says those who obey Him are His mother and sister and brother it's good news for us... That we can enter into as intimate a relationship with Him as Mary had... It's a matter of doing our best to do His will. Hope that helps! Keep reading and praying! Tell Jesus what bothers you about Mary. I'm confident He'll help.

About Luke 11:27-28 being contradictory to Marian devotion. Jesus replies "...Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it." (KJV)
So did Mary do that? Absolutely! She heard it was God's will that she should bear a child. At the risk of being publicly shamed and stoned to death, she obeyed. Jesus said my mother isn't blessed because she's my mother rather because she heard the word of God and kept it.

According to the angel sent by God, Mary is "kecharitomene", fully graced - continuous present tense in Greek ie was and still is. Full meaning with no more room for anything else, like sin.

I'm a Polish Catholic and our Polish church has a deep devotion for the Blessed Mother. If you ever struggle with her role think about the first miracle in Kana. She told her Son about the trouble that the young couple was having and She knew with the whole confidence her Son will help. Hence, her words towards the servants: Do whatever He tells you to do.
She's the powerful mediator and advocate for us, our loving Mother. She never points to herself as the central point, always points toward her Son. The issue of not being effected by the original sin: how could God place His Son to grow under the heart of a woman who would be anything but pure? Only recently I've found a Jewish convert to Catholicism Harvard professor Roy Schumann. Based on his private revelation he converted and his deep love for Virgin Mary is astounding. I'll try to find a link and post it here.

Here is the doctrine of sola scriptura.

Of course, that is true. But we are talking about Tradition with a capital T, not lower case t.
Tradition is "the deposit of faith given to the Apostles by Jesus Christ" THAT Tradition, NEVER changes!
You are talking about what you think are man-made-traditions like: that Catholics supposedly "Worship Mary"; "Worship statues" ;"Think they can sin all the time and then just confess it to a priest and go happily to heaven" ; "Just go to Church and your are "saved'"; "that the Catholic Church "added to the Bible"; etc. THOSE are lies. Those are not Tradition, NOR are they traditions in the Catholic Church.
I was raised evangelical, dispensational protestant all my life. Even went to Bible College. I became a Catholic at age 45. Everything that I was spoon fed about "traditions' that Catholics think will "get them to heaven" are all, simply, complete falsehoods. But, all that I read that is the Tradition in the Catholic Church , I pretty much already believed,
      I only had to expand:
My view of The Body of Christ to include those alive and aware, in heaven,
Believe what Jesus actually says in the literal sense when he says "My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink" (why is that the ONLY place that Prods don't take the Bible literally?),
Believe all Jesus said to Peter about His plan to begin His Physical Church on earth, on him, Peter, the rock.
I still believe that I have to have FAITH and that I am only "saved" through the work of Christ on Calvary.
God has STRUCTURE in the way He wants to be worshiped and how He decided to dispense with His Grace, just as He did in the Old Testament, and God never changes. So the Catholic Church is HIS authority on Earth now.
And it is what EVERYONE believed for 1500 years!! And, by he way, why we live in such a safe, civilized society with hospitals, universities, science, charities etc.
      IT IS GORGEOUS!!

As I've always said, it is pointless debating with Protestants and other denominations about the Bible because there is nothing to debate about with regards to their beliefs in the "Bible alone theory of salvation." Their inferior understanding is just not worth getting all worked up.
True Christianity which is the Catholic Church, is not a Church based on compiled books it created.
We are a Church of Tradition, Apostolic Succession and Sacraments which all came first before the Church decided to compile the Bible.
So when a Protestant ask; "Where is that in the Bible?"
I simply say; "It is not in the Bible because the Bible is incomplete.
Again..We are a Church of Tradition, Apostolic Succession, Sacraments and The Bible. Even Christmas celebration came before the Bible was made. The funny thing is most Protestants celebrate Christmas but that part which is not in the Bible is taken from Catholic Tradition.
We are not a Church of just one book. Jesus created a Church not a Bible.
Besides Protestants have no authority to interpret the Bible since it was the Catholic Church that made it in the first place.

He also wanted to remove the New Testament book of James from which we get the famous line "Faith without Works is Dead'" which we see illustrated by Protestants all the time who express faith but do nothing for the poor or the elderly or the sick. 75% of world charities are run by the Roman Catholic Church. By their fruits you shall know them. Protestants cannot as a whole be bothered. They are too busy fantasizing about playing golf with Donald Trump. The entire Protestant obsession with "Faith Only" can be refuted simply by referring to the Second Coming. Jesus does not ask if you believe the Nicene Creed. He asks each person if they fed the hungry, clothed the naked, administered to the poor. It is so obvious that Luther was wrong from the start.

It's easy to be a Catholic when everything's going well but so much harder when you're under the scrutiny and judgement of your fellow Catholics.
My parish priest said I could take communion as long as I didn't remarry. It's been very hard to remain celibate since the age of 36 but God gave me the grace to refuse when I was tempted. I still consider my children's father as my husband in the eyes of God. It's helped me to think kindly and respectfully about him. Our children have grown up with a father and a mother, despite everything. I now have a very happy life because God's given me so many blessings. I can take communion which is the most amazing comfort to me.
Keep strong, keep the faith with the help of Jesus. The struggle is worth it.

Annette a My Goodness, may your faith be rewarded. I have tears and a lump in my throat reading your comment. ❤️

God is close to the broken hearted. There are many who have a misunderstanding about what the Church teaches in this regard. The Sacrament of Matrimony is irrevocable. Being divorced or separated does not keep us apart from the Sacraments that can indeed be a source of healing, especially the Eucharist, the source and summit of our Faith. Scripture merely talks about remarriage as adultery, the sin that keeps a person away from the Eucharist, unless an annulment has been attained.

Father Mike, I'm a bit confused, is Maronite considered Catholic like Roman Catholic and are Maronite Priests given the authority through the Catholic church to administer sacraments?

    2 Thessalonians 2:15
15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. - Saint Paul, 51 AD
Tradition came WAY before the Bible was compiled. It clearly has equal authority to the Scriptures. Thank you, Fr. Mike Schmitz 🙏🏻
