Have you repented of your direction in life from following the world to following Christ ? Have you asked Jesus to forgive your sins and accepted His gift of salvation through faith? Do you need to join a church group with questionable history that claims to be the one and only church? You need to see yourself as a believer in Christ first, and a member of a church group second .

I try to explain it to my Protestant friends by comparing it to a marriage. Just because you say “I do” doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work at the marriage. Could you imagine if you didn’t tell your wife you love her, not spending any time with her, not communicating? What if you cheated and then said “yeah, but you agreed to marry me…you can’t leave me for that!”

so that no one can boast.” In Ephesians 1:14, we are told that the salvation explained in verses 3-14 is “to the praise of His [God’s] glory.” If the plan and process of salvation were from ourselves, based on our good works, then, when we achieved the necessary level of goodness to warrant salvation, we could boast. “I did it!” we might say, or, “I gave it my all and overcame tremendous obstacles, but I finally ascended to the highest levels of goodness and holiness, and God gave me what I deserved!” And we could look down on those who did not make it: “Those others failed because they lacked the fortitude, insight, and piety that I cultivated.” Boasting would abound. If the plan and process of salvation were based on human works, then we would elevate ourselves over other people and even in some sense over God Himself, because our salvation was our own doing, not His. Ephesians 2:8-9 says an emphatic NO. The plan and process of salvation is from God as a gift, it is by grace, and it is accessed through faith in God’s promises in Christ. Nothing about salvation is worked up from within ourselves, and it is not based on good things we do. Boasting in our own achievements is out of place, but, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:17, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Many people memorize Ephesians 2:8-9, and it is an excellent synopsis of the gospel, but the passage does not end at verse 9. Verse 10 is necessary to complete the thought. Someone might wonder what place good works have in the life of a Christian. We have already seen that chapters 4-6 are all about good works and right behavior. Just as chapters 4-6 come after chapters 1-3, so Ephesians 2:10 comes after Ephesians 2:8-9, not only sequentially but also conceptually and chronologically. We are not saved by doing good works, but we are saved for the purpose of doing good works: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Good works are a vital part of the Christian life because doing good is one of the reasons God saves us-He has things for us to do. But the sequence is all-important-good works are not the cause of salvation but the purpose of it. God saves us so that we can go into the world, doing good works in His name, and this brings Him all the more glory (cf. Matthew 5:16).
Given the truth of Ephesians 2:8-9, it is crucial to ask oneself, “What do I rely on for my salvation?” Are you relying upon good things you have done, or do you recognize that you have nothing to contribute and simply cast yourself upon the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ?

As someone who was already Christian, how is it now that when you ask forgiveness of sins, it's still a long way to getting forgiven. It used to be when you were convicted of sins, you confessed to God and you knew you were forgiven. Maybe you were compelled to need to confess to someone, because sin was heavier, or maybe you did someone wrong, so you needed to confess to whoever you wronged, but it was simple. In Catholicism, it's not simple. You have to confess to a priest. I have no issue w/ that method, it's a lovely sacrament and many find it very freeing. But then you need to do penance. You're not just forgiven, you need to go earn that somehow. But it's not over there, because you may, or more likely have build up of temporal sin and you have some time to do in purgatory. So then you need to seek indulgences, and do more works to try and lighten your time in purgatory. Maybe you have a relative you loved, but you know they are doing hard time in purgatory, so you need to seek indulgences for them too. I'm told it's not works based, but it seems the work doesn't ever really end to be a great Catholic.

@@jacobz2269, can you pls complete the Bible passage by continuing through Ephesians 2:10, and then, make a complete interpretation of the whole passage.
Otherwise, you are just cherry-picking Bible verses that suit private interpretation and belief without understanding the intended message of the whole passage.
Because as far as I know, since the 5th century when the Catholic Church condemned and denied the Pelagian heresy, we Catholics have never been taught that we can earn our salvation by our good works because salvation is essentially a free gift of God to us, as Fr Mike Schmitz has expressed.
But just like how you need to include verse 10 to verses 8 and 9, you have to make sense of the whole Biblical passage. Doesn't your pastor include verse 10 to Ephesians 2:8-9 when he made you understand their version of interpretation of the incomplete Bible passage? (I'm pretty sure he doesn't, does he?)

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. God abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. This is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
No one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit. Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will NOT count his sin. Even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved-through Faith. - And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
So now Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. It is the spirit that transforms you. From within. Everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. Jesus said "If you love me, you WILL keep my commandments.” You WILL. The is w characteristic trait of the legitimate regenerate believer.

As a Protestant, we are not very different in our interpretations. However, I’ve gotta point out that “saved by grace through faith” is scriptural quotation, but the “working itself out through love” is added. The scripture you quoted says “saved by grace through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not a result of works so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” You see, the impetus for good works is put on Gods saving grace, not in human effort. The teaching of scripture is you simply cannot do actual good works on your own, they must be done via living faith that the Holy Spirit provides. Saying “we must do the will of the father to get into heaven” is not scriptural, while saying “those who do the will of the father will enter heaven” is scriptural. There is a slight error in the one that can mislead. This is the argument prots have been making for hundreds of years. Salvation is through living faith, but it is still only by living faith. True faith. Faith that does. But by adding the “working itself out through love” we may introduce some error that can lead the well-meaning Christian into a soul-crushing effort to earn their salvation. We may not be far from each other though.

    • @JB-em9po
      @JB-em9po Месяц назад +4

Further - the argument you make about the guitar, I think misses the point James makes in his epistle. It’s not that you must use your faith for it to be saving, it’s that a faith that doesn’t work is no faith at all. True, living faith, the kind that saves, is a working faith. Someone who claims to believe that God exists, yet doesn’t truly care what God has told him to do, doesn’t have living faith. It’s a bare belief, without true faith. When Paul says you are saved by faith, he means living faith. James and Paul are addressing different errors, both important, but distinctions need to be made.

Father Mike, you inspired me a year ago after I had an experience of God and He lifted the scales from my eyes and I was given the gift of faith in a instant. I’m feeling the call to become a sister and help the little children broken by sexual abuse in and out of the Church. There was a video I saw where you cried and said don’t leave, help make it better. I asked God to heal me if it was His will for me to do that. He has. Without works it’s not real faith. @@ansbnansn The scripture is discussing whether gentiles should have to be circumcised in accordance with Jewish law. Is it the works of the law (in this case circumcision) that conveys righteousness or is it faith. Romans 2:25:26 (but really for multiple chapters). What good is works without faith? The scripture references Abraham's faith saying that he "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness" Abraham would have sacrificed his son. He trusted and he believed God and was willing to do as God commanded of him. He was credited according to his faith, because God knew his heart.
      Consider Romans 2:12-16
God knows all of our hearts. This is why Catholics do not believe that they are saved specifically by works but rather that works are an outward expression of true faith. It is not the works themselves that earn our salvation. It is God's grace that He makes available to us through faith and in faith we serve. Again, those who believe in God will at least try to do as he commands. Just like Abraham did as God commanded before God's angel stopped his blade. Gen 22:9-19 "because you have *done* this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed i will greatly bless you"

Father Mike, I just want to take a moment to let you know how much The Holy Spirit is using you in my life. I was baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church (nearly 46 years ago) but have lived my entire adult life as a Protestant. I have been struggling with chronic health issues since last fall. In early winter, I felt a call towards the Catholic Church. I began listening to you, at first by myself, but in January my husband and four children joined along with me. My oldest, who is 16, was completely opposed at first. Being a homeschooled history lover, and having learned through a Protestant lens, he had some pretty strong objections. I knew that I couldn’t push him, and that if it was The Lord’s will, the Holy Spirit would lead him in time, so I asked if out of respect for our family, he would just listen with us. Here we are eight months later, and the boy has grown quite fond of you! Recently, he shared at the dinner table how badly he feels that you are not married with kids. My husband and I assured him that you had made that choice. Nevertheless, this week he says (when watching a Protestant pastor online), “He has nothing on Father Mike!“ I jokingly said, “ you’re slowly coming to the other side.” He laughed. Anyhow, I would like to ask you to pray for him (his name is Samuel) and for our family. We are facing many challenges in this season of life and for reasons I won’t share here, haven’t planted ourselves in a church. I personally find myself “via media”, as the Anglicans say, but my husband tells me I’m already Catholic. We have so much to do with such little time and many obstacles in the way, but I’m confident The Lord is present and leading us in His goodness and in His perfect timing. The Lord bless you and keep you, Father Mike. You are reaching souls for His magnificent glory. Love in Christ, Amanda

If I were to encounter this at the Mass, I would say that being saved by grace is receiving the unmeritted love of God transmitted through scripture and explained to me in the homily, receiving that transmission in faith when reciting the creed and working itself out in love when I pray for the world in the prayers of the faithful. In this way the Liturgy of the Word saves us and prepares us to be in communion with Jesus in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Truly, the Mass is as close to heaven on earth as we can get.

It’s easier when you think of it as God already gave you an A in class. All you have to do is maintain it because you have faith in Him.
If you don’t do your homework, assignments, pass the exams you’re going to fail that class.
So without works faith is not faith at all. Works is needed for faith to work.

@@federaikkonerer What about someone who didn't believe that God gave him an A in the class but aced all the assignments, tests, homework etc. just out of determination and dedication? Supposedly, that person still fails because they didn't believe that God gave them an A, even if they had better test results than those who believed.

Salvation and Sanctification are two different things.
    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (ESV)

to William Kister, thank you for this distinction between salvation of 'be-ing' need and sanctification by 'doing' gift.
Thinking works as sanctification gift and heart having faith in need of salvation are inseparable and qualitatively equal.
Having faith is a need met by God's gift of faith.
That there are extreme tensions between gift and need is due to diseased family member identity need of union occult as hidden, incest connected as substitute mate, grooming of procreation role gift of emotionally and or psychologically vulnerable family members in their roles to purport to presume this gift is a need as a non-economic status of "higher vocation" (Pope St John Paul 2's Council for the Family "Guidelines", TTMHS, PCF, 1995, 35; cf. St Paul 1 Cor 7:25-34) for economic advantages of the families of these groomers by tax-exemption embezzlements and lower insurance cost by fraud.

James makes a valid point, however, one should not necessarily conclude that one HAS to do good works in addition to his salvation by Grace through Faith in Jesus. The truly saved person is saved by Grace by faith in Jesus and the result is one desires to do good works, not because he HAS TO, but because HE WANTS to. Thank you for the teaching. It is a pleasure to do that which we, the saved, want to do because of our love and appreciation of what Jesus has done for us. It's all about Him. Not us.

*John 14:12* sums up the Catholic view pretty well in my opinion. Catholics do believe that we are saved by faith. But understanding what it means to be faithful is the key. Faith is not shown by empty words. God sees our faith and love for Him by how we live our lives and if we do what he has commanded us to do. *Mark 12:30-31*

When we were young many years ago there was a saying which made us kids roll our eyes, which originated in the early 1900s “Put your money where your mouth (or heart in the 1800s) is.” meaning of course to fully commit everything of value that you had. Faith without works/actions is not “real” yet, think of the marvelous commitment/actions our priests and religious and laypeople ministries make as a life expression of Faith.

      Matthew 6:19-20
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Or do you take issue with your works revealing your faith in Christ?

    So a few things:
On Matthew 7: Those who said "Lord Lord" were NEVER known by God, so to say they had actual faith is just simply not possible. The point of that passage is that they DIDNT submit their intellect and will to Christ. They even did works but didnt have faith, they only claimed they did.
On James 2: Notice what is being defined here. "Faith without works is dead." This does not mean that works are responsible for your salvation in any way, but that instead works are demonstrating a living faith. That's the entire point of the passage; that works justify (or vindicate/prove true) a person when they claim to have faith! It is vitally important to understand the context of James 2. "Justified" is being used not in the theological sense of the word, but the dictionary definition, this is why a person isnt "justified by faith alone" because they are not proven to have living faith if they have no evidence of it! James' original question is: "Does that faith save him" so James is only distinguishing between a living faith and a dead faith. He leaves no possibility to claim works play a role in our salvation, otherwise James would be blatantly contradicting Paul in Romans 4:4-5 - "Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift, but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifes the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness"
If our works justified us before God, then we would have a contradiction, but we do not when we understand the correct context of what James is discussing.
On Matthew 25: Again, this shows how works are evidence of faith. Both groups claimed faith, but only one had true faith, demonstrated by living it out. Not every claim to faith is a genuine trust in Christ. We all know people who claim to be Christian and live lives opposed to him. This is why we need to understand the Bible in its entirety before making statements that contradict the writings of Paul explaining the gospel like Fr. Mike is doing here.
Believe Paul when he writes in Romans 1:16-17 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith'"
Live by faith, and you will naturally do the good works that "God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10b). We are saved by Grace through faith alone, and we walk and love in faith, as God has promised.

Baptism is part os dalvation too and that's biblical.
Good works don't save but are needed for salvation... the big protestant problem is saying that good works are not needed fo salvation. That's their faith alone evil doctrine. Biblical answer is in James 2, 14-26 and Matthew 25, 31-46.
We must be careful with those heresies that want to discard the church and make follow these so-called superheroes. You have to study about the first church and then see why there are 66,000 protestants sects. The Bible is clear in Matthew 16, 16-19. Jesus founded his church and it is indestructible... it's logical that it is the Catholic, the others go with the heretic Martin Luther. A traitor to the church who betrayed JESUS like Jude and ended up hanging himself just like Jude, who betrays the church, betrays Christ because the church is so important that it is the body of Christ. Ephesians 5, 23. 1 Corinthians 12, 12-28. Whoever leaves the church is not a Christian, he is an antichrist. 1 John 2, 18-19. John 17, 21 clearly says that JESUS wants unity and not sect divisions. Ephesians 3, 21 we must give glory to God forever in his church, which is the pillar and base of the truth. 1 Timothy 3, 15. We should not listen to those who come with new doctrines or stray from God. 2 John 1, 8-11. Galatians 1, 6-10.
      Isaiah 56.10-11
[10] His guardians are all blind, none of them know anything. They are all stupid dogs, incapable of barking. They would lie down, they would like to doze.
[11] Those voracious dogs are never satisfied, and they are the shepherds! They do not know how to discern, each one takes his way, all, until the end, in pursuit of his own benefit.
Protestant sects are neither evangelical nor Christian. Only the Catholic Church is truly Christian and evangelical. The others claim to be evangelical, but they are not. Example: The Gospel of John 6, 48-71 says that JESUS truly dwells in consecrated bread and wine, but Protestants deny the real presence and only say that it is a symbol. The Gospel of John never says it is a symbol. As John 20, 21-23 and James 5, 16 JESUS gives his church the power to forgive sins, Protestants say no, that they do not confess and that men cannot forgive sins and therefore contradict Christ and the word of God. John 2, 1 says that Mary intercedes even when JESUS has no plans to perform a miracle, Protestants contradict the gospel and say no. John 17, 20-26: Be one as the father and I are one, be united, but the Protestants separated from the church and among them are divided into more than 66,000 sects. John 19, 26-27 It says that JESUS gave his mother Mary as a mother to his disciple John and equal to the church, she is a spiritual mother. Protestants say no. Matthew 16, 18-19 JESUS gave Peter authority over the other apostles and left him as the main leader of the church, as pope, father or leader. Like Isaiah 22, 20-22, it says that when a king gives the keys to his servant who becomes the father of the community, JESUS is the king of kings and his community is the church, that is why the Catholic church has a pope. In Matthew 25, 31-46 JESUS criticizes very strongly those who do not do works for others, and Protestants criticize the Catholic Church because it teaches that good works should be done. Protestants teach that we are saved only by grace, when in truth we were saved in the past, JESUS gave himself on the cross by grace and saved us, but to do good works. Ephesians 2, 8-10. The key is in verse 10 that they do not read and in another book that Luther tried to eliminate because this agrees with the Catholic Church doctrine and contradicts that evil heresy. That book is James because in chapter 2, 14-26 it says that faith without works is dead faith and ask. Can that faith save you without works? Even stronger is what Jesus will say about works on the day of judgment. Matthew 25, 31-46.
Baptism, Galatians 3, 27 says that through baptism we give ourselves to Christ and JESUS said let the children come to me and do not prevent it. 1 Peter 3, 21 also says that through baptism we are saved ... because as Galatians 3, 27 says through it we give ourselves to CHRIST !! He also says that it does not consist of bathing to clean the body in a river or beach, that was the baptism of John the Baptist and it is over. So the protestants prevent children from reaching Christ and deny them salvation.
This is only a summary of the gospels, if we had to be other topics in the apostolic letters, we will also see other contradictions of the Protestants with the gospel of JESUS CHRIST! The cross, moving to another faith, prayer to the dead, purgatory, repeated prayers, the images, say that Mary had more children, they say that the bible is the truth and the bible itself says that the CHURCH is the pillar and foundation of the Truth 1 Timothy 3, 15. They say that it does not matter to be in any church, etc. Quite the opposite of what the word of God teaches!

James, Jesus’ brother, encourages everyone that believes in his brother to do something with your faith. Don’t just warm a pew every Sunday morning for 45 minutes! Become a pastor, teach a bible study or Sunday school, sing in the choir. It doesn’t have to be a church activity, volunteer in your community, deliver meals-on-wheels, visit people in nursing homes. Let your faith be active not passive!
