I try to explain it to my Protestant friends by comparing it to a marriage. Just because you say “I do” doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work at the marriage. Could you imagine if you didn’t tell your wife you love her, not spending any time with her, not communicating? What if you cheated and then said “yeah, but you agreed to marry me…you can’t leave me for that!”
so that no one can boast.” In Ephesians 1:14, we are told that the salvation explained in verses 3-14 is “to the praise of His [God’s] glory.” If the plan and process of salvation were from ourselves, based on our good works, then, when we achieved the necessary level of goodness to warrant salvation, we could boast. “I did it!” we might say, or, “I gave it my all and overcame tremendous obstacles, but I finally ascended to the highest levels of goodness and holiness, and God gave me what I deserved!” And we could look down on those who did not make it: “Those others failed because they lacked the fortitude, insight, and piety that I cultivated.” Boasting would abound. If the plan and process of salvation were based on human works, then we would elevate ourselves over other people and even in some sense over God Himself, because our salvation was our own doing, not His. Ephesians 2:8-9 says an emphatic NO. The plan and process of salvation is from God as a gift, it is by grace, and it is accessed through faith in God’s promises in Christ. Nothing about salvation is worked up from within ourselves, and it is not based on good things we do. Boasting in our own achievements is out of place, but, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:17, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” Many people memorize Ephesians 2:8-9, and it is an excellent synopsis of the gospel, but the passage does not end at verse 9. Verse 10 is necessary to complete the thought. Someone might wonder what place good works have in the life of a Christian. We have already seen that chapters 4-6 are all about good works and right behavior. Just as chapters 4-6 come after chapters 1-3, so Ephesians 2:10 comes after Ephesians 2:8-9, not only sequentially but also conceptually and chronologically. We are not saved by doing good works, but we are saved for the purpose of doing good works: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Good works are a vital part of the Christian life because doing good is one of the reasons God saves us-He has things for us to do. But the sequence is all-important-good works are not the cause of salvation but the purpose of it. God saves us so that we can go into the world, doing good works in His name, and this brings Him all the more glory (cf. Matthew 5:16). Given the truth of Ephesians 2:8-9, it is crucial to ask oneself, “What do I rely on for my salvation?” Are you relying upon good things you have done, or do you recognize that you have nothing to contribute and simply cast yourself upon the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ?

As someone who was already Christian, how is it now that when you ask forgiveness of sins, it's still a long way to getting forgiven. It used to be when you were convicted of sins, you confessed to God and you knew you were forgiven. Maybe you were compelled to need to confess to someone, because sin was heavier, or maybe you did someone wrong, so you needed to confess to whoever you wronged, but it was simple. In Catholicism, it's not simple. You have to confess to a priest. I have no issue w/ that method, it's a lovely sacrament and many find it very freeing. But then you need to do penance. You're not just forgiven, you need to go earn that somehow. But it's not over there, because you may, or more likely have build up of temporal sin and you have some time to do in purgatory. So then you need to seek indulgences, and do more works to try and lighten your time in purgatory. Maybe you have a relative you loved, but you know they are doing hard time in purgatory, so you need to seek indulgences for them too. I'm told it's not works based, but it seems the work doesn't ever really end to be a great Catholic.

@@jacobz2269, can you pls complete the Bible passage by continuing through Ephesians 2:10, and then, make a complete interpretation of the whole passage. Otherwise, you are just cherry-picking Bible verses that suit private interpretation and belief without understanding the intended message of the whole passage. Because as far as I know, since the 5th century when the Catholic Church condemned and denied the Pelagian heresy, we Catholics have never been taught that we can earn our salvation by our good works because salvation is essentially a free gift of God to us, as Fr Mike Schmitz has expressed. But just like how you need to include verse 10 to verses 8 and 9, you have to make sense of the whole Biblical passage. Doesn't your pastor include verse 10 to Ephesians 2:8-9 when he made you understand their version of interpretation of the incomplete Bible passage? (I'm pretty sure he doesn't, does he?) Let's see, @jacobz2269, kindly make sense of verse 10 in relation to verses 8 and 9, and explain it to us here... Thanks.

John 14:12 sums up the Catholic view pretty well in my opinion. Thank you for standing up for the truth and correcting the misrepresentation of what Catholics actually believe. As you say, we believe that God paid for our sins and that our works do not earn our ticket to heaven. However, if you love someone, you'll show it. Why would God desire only empty words? We show our faith by how we live our lives and through true faith we are saved.
As do I. I may not always agree with everything the Catholic church teaches, but Father Mike has a God-given ability to explain the nuances of Catholicism in a simplistic manner. And, at least in this case, my Protestant understanding would agree with his. I'm thankful for his ministry to us.

@annalovesjesus16 exactly. If you believe, you will act a certain way that shows it. But it is still a gift from God. If you give me a gift, it doesn't mean now I have to mow the lawn of your house!
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever [believes in him] shall not perish but have eternal life. Romans 10:9-10. If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and [believe in your heart] that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Acts 10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who [believes in him] receives forgiveness of sins through his name. 1 John 5:13. 13 I write these things to you who [believe in the name of the Son of God] so that you may know that you have eternal life. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you are [saved through faith], and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift from God, so that no one can boast. Romans 3:28. 28 We conclude that a person has [God’s approval by faith], not by his own efforts. John 6:40 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and [believes in him] shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. God abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. This is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does. No one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit. Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will NOT count his sin. Even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved-through Faith. - And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. So now Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. It is the spirit that transforms you. From within. Everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. Jesus said "If you love me, you WILL keep my commandments.” You WILL. The is w characteristic trait of the legitimate regenerate believer.

Father Mike, I just want to take a moment to let you know how much The Holy Spirit is using you in my life. I was baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church (nearly 46 years ago) but have lived my entire adult life as a Protestant. I have been struggling with chronic health issues since last fall. In early winter, I felt a call towards the Catholic Church. I began listening to you, at first by myself, but in January my husband and four children joined along with me. My oldest, who is 16, was completely opposed at first. Being a homeschooled history lover, and having learned through a Protestant lens, he had some pretty strong objections. I knew that I couldn’t push him, and that if it was The Lord’s will, the Holy Spirit would lead him in time, so I asked if out of respect for our family, he would just listen with us. Here we are eight months later, and the boy has grown quite fond of you! Recently, he shared at the dinner table how badly he feels that you are not married with kids. My husband and I assured him that you had made that choice. Nevertheless, this week he says (when watching a Protestant pastor online), “He has nothing on Father Mike!“ I jokingly said, “ you’re slowly coming to the other side.” He laughed. Anyhow, I would like to ask you to pray for him (his name is Samuel) and for our family. We are facing many challenges in this season of life and for reasons I won’t share here, haven’t planted ourselves in a church. I personally find myself “via media”, as the Anglicans say, but my husband tells me I’m already Catholic. We have so much to do with such little time and many obstacles in the way, but I’m confident The Lord is present and leading us in His goodness and in His perfect timing. The Lord bless you and keep you, Father Mike. You are reaching souls for His magnificent glory. Love in Christ, Amanda

THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN: IT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS THAT MAKES ATONEMENT FOR YOUR SOUL AND NOTHING ELSE: God, speaking to Moses, declares: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”-1 Corinthians 15:1-4 The sacrifice of Jesus and the shedding of his blood on the cross is what makes atonement for the souls of believers.
I was saved two years ago as an adult. Grew up in a family who hated Jesus. Then baptized in a Protestant church and my whole life and heart changed. I am convinced that *most* Catholics and Protestants are describing the same thing just in different ways. How salvation has been described to me both by Protestants and Catholics matches with what I have experienced.
Help me Lord. You'll always use my gifts the best that I can. I try but sometimes I get frustrated when people are lazy and try to make you do more. Forgive me for those times

More than one pastor has told me not to worry about confusion. They said that if I believe in Jesus and say the magic words, ‘Jesus, I believe in you,’ then I’m golden and going to heaven. I wish I could write and explain as clearly as you. You have a gift that is easy to spot, but I will continue to pray for you because I am aware of how badly the devil attacks a good priest.
I'm probably going to become Catholic, I have been so wrong about so many things and I'm sorry for fighting against the church so much. I'm tired and I want to come home.
@@ExodusPrime-x5h, Welcome home, prodigal son or daughter! I became Catholic 6 years ago after a LOT of homework. Always thought “those Catholics” were wrong in all of it. I believed all the lies and propaganda put out by non-Catholics. I decided to attend RCIA, just for information and to gain weapons for fighting Catholicism. And now I’m a Catholic. 😄 Welcome home, @Given_Grace!🙏🏼💕💜
I surrendered to the lord after 52 years and was confirmed into the church at this year’s Easter Vigil after going thru the RCIA program! It has been the greatest gift of my life.
Read the Book of James, especially 1&2. It is a condemnation of the entire protestant movement. Luther, the original protestant, could see the problem but amazingly no protestant can reconcile this in their mind, though they try to. Luther referred to it as a work of straw. Faith and Works. There is no ‘faith alone’. They have inserted the word ‘alone’ and thereby corrupted our sacred text and perverted their minds.
Ask your friend how they reconcile this verse John 14:12. I'm truly curious. This particular verse from Jesus's own mouth makes the relationship between faith and works crystal clear.
@@Kjvbible1611t The scripture is discussing whether gentiles should have to be circumcised in accordance with Jewish law. Is it the works of the law (in this case circumcision) that conveys righteousness or is it faith. Romans 2:25:26 (but really for multiple chapters). What good is works without faith? The scripture references Abraham's faith saying that he "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness" Abraham would have sacrificed his son. He trusted and he believed God and was willing to do as God commanded of him. He was credited according to his faith, because God knew his heart. Consider Romans 2:12-16 God knows all of our hearts. This is why Catholics do not believe that they are saved specifically by works but rather that works are an outward expression of true faith. It is not the works themselves that earn our salvation. It is God's grace that He makes available to us through faith and in faith we serve. Again, those who believe in God will at least try to do as he commands. Just like Abraham did as God commanded before God's angel stopped his blade. Gen 22:9-19 "because you have *done* this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed i will greatly bless you"

At 3:37. I’m a non-denominational Christian who is soon to marry a Catholic. That’s a whole thing that she and I are working to pray for guidance from God as far as where He seeks to place us, so I won’t get too deep into that. From my understanding, and you’ve so far in the video said all things I agree with, we are saved through a relationship with Christ, and if we truly have faith, God will call us to action, to serve, to spread the Gospel, etc. It’s easy for people to forget that we largely hold the same values, Protestants and Catholics. I believe God will place me and my future wife where He needs us most, church-wise. Where He needs us to serve His kingdom and raise the next generation to know Him. Edit: Yeah I agree with all that, even as a non-Catholic :)
Thank you GOD for the number of lives, thinking and perspectives you change through Fr.Mike.. I pray Fr.Mike gets the grace and zeal to continue and expand this work of amazing grace.. 🙏

As a protestant, this is exactly what I believe and almost all of my protestant brothers and sisters believe this as well. Those that just "believe" and go on their merry way to do whatever, have NOT read their bible. Another great video Fr. Mike 😃
So you claim Jesus Christ lied when he said "It is finished"? Why does he cite the Book of James when the Book of James is about fellowship, not salvation? If you're catholic you have an excuse to not read the Bible, but you are without excuse while claiming to be protestant. Are you sure you're not catholic?
@@cba4389 Yes, very much a protestant. As for my statement, I can see why someone would misunderstand what I meant. First I do NOT believe that there is one thing anyone can do to "help" in gaining their salvation. What I was trying to say was that there are those that think that saying a little prayer and then continuing to live life on their terms without a changed heart have a issue. We all continue to sin, but Christ changed my heart and I can see and repent...AND I know that Christ saved me from death. Others just hold the attitude that they can do what ever they want because they have a "get out of jail free" card....heart has not changed. I Totally reject works based salvation !
@@Vintage_GenX You are implying a merit system that requires a minimum level of spiritual maturity or grace is revoked. I understand that God offering salvation with no strings attached and no small print sounds too good to be true. With God, it is true. You also act like living spiritually has no benefit and nobody would do it unless it was required for salvation. Its the difference between not committing a crime because you might get caught and not committing a crime because it's wrong. Grace is the only option that insures the only motivation is a love for what is right.
I thought the guitar analogy was too extended at first, but then I realized it makes sense to explain the faith/works issue. You can receive a guitar for free, the best, unlimited classes by the best instructor, and even free guitar repairs if it breaks. But all of that is worthless unless you play the guitar, and strive to deepen you guitar skills and knowledge.
Protestant here. I'm very thankful for Father Mike. While I don't agree on everything, he truly has a gift for explaining difficult concepts in simple ways.
I have been catholic for 55 years and god does give me so much mercy and grace. Looking towards him gives me JOY. It is still hard to follow sometimes, but My Lord will save me and us all. Good piece Fthr. Mike; did I do something or not do something? With the Grace of God I pray I get there through faith and works!
I don't understand how anyone could listen to this man and not be moved to become Catholic. I'm convinced Fr. Mike is a living saint; on fire with the Holy Ghost. God bless him and all of the people at Ascension Press.
James makes a valid point, however, one should not necessarily conclude that one HAS to do good works in addition to his salvation by Grace through Faith in Jesus. The truly saved person is saved by Grace by faith in Jesus and the result is one desires to do good works, not because he HAS TO, but because HE WANTS to. Thank you for the teaching. It is a pleasure to do that which we, the saved, want to do because of our love and appreciation of what Jesus has done for us. It's all about Him. Not us.
I'm Catholic and this was one of those things I just had to take on faith because I didnt understand it despite years of people trying to explain it to me. The guitar metaphor helped. I think I understand now. Thank you!
It’s easier when you think of it as God already gave you an A in class. All you have to do is maintain it because you have faith in Him. If you don’t do your homework, assignments, pass the exams you’re going to fail that class. So without works faith is not faith at all. Works is needed for faith to work.
@@basstheangelo What about someone who didn't believe that God gave him an A in the class but aced all the assignments, tests, homework etc. just out of determination and dedication? Supposedly, that person still fails because they didn't believe that God gave them an A, even if they had better test results than those who believed.
earlier today i seen a video that talked about this same topic & getting another one today by Fr Mike is just great reminder we must help those who are less fortunate, God Bless everyone on Earth.

The way it was explained to me - we are saved by faith but the way you prove your faith is by works - faith is the substance of things hoped for, works are the substance of faith.
Why did Luther notice that believers often do not do the good works that result from saving faith. He blames them for taking advantage of the liberty they have and for not being committed to the gospel. The Gospel, by which they have been delivered from burdens and troubles so manifold, and might feel a little shame because like pigs and dogs they retain no more of the Gospel than such a lazy, pernicious, shameful, carnal liberty! Why wasn’t Faith alone enough for him Luther asks this question can you answer it How can it be that some people have enough faith to be saved but not enough to do good works that are pleasing to God? 1 Corinthians 13 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. "SEE HOW A PERSON IS JUSTIFIED BY WORKS AND NOT BY FAITH ALONE" James 2:24 "IF I HAVE FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS, BUT HAVE NOT LOVE THEN I AM NOTHING" 1 Cor 13:2 "THE ONE WHO ENDURES TO THE END, THE SAME SHALL BE SAVED" Matthew 24:13 "FAITH OF ITSLEF, IF NOT ACCOMPANIED BY WORKS, IS DEAD" James 2:17 "JUST AS A BODY WITHOUT A SPIRIT IS DEAD? "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God--not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:8-10) Romans 2:6-7 Here’s what Paul says: For he will render to every man according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.😉😉
Don’t confuse works with your track record with sin! Works is the actions you take by faith for God. Good stuff! The more you do in love for God and people can get you rewards and crowns in heaven!

Matthew 6:19-20 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Or do you take issue with your works revealing your faith in Christ? James 2:19 “But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James 2:22 *Speaking of Abraham* “You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works.”

I have been watching Fr. Mike’s videos since April. Off and on, as a former Protestant, I’ve struggled with what I’ve been brought up to believe as a non-Catholic Christian. But now, a few months later, in the early hours of the morning at almost 5am, I have fully decided to start OCIA in September and actually commit my life to Christ as a Catholic. I know it will take a lot of work, time, prayer, and effort, but I’m willing and excited to do this because Jesus was willing to give up everything for me. And I want to enter into the Church He created. ❤️✝️❤️🔥🙏🏻
You left the Proteatants for these insolent... Just kidding. I am an ecumenical Pentecostal, and I believe in the brotherhood of all congregations of Christianity.
My parish priest once told me that we were saved at Baptism, we are being saved currently as we live and got to reconciliation, and we will be saved at the end in the final judgment. Thank you Fr. Mike, this is such an important topic. 👏
Baptism is part os dalvation too and that's biblical. Good works don't save but are needed for salvation... the big protestant problem is saying that good works are not needed fo salvation. That's their faith alone evil doctrine. Biblical answer is in James 2, 14-26 and Matthew 25, 31-46. We must be careful with those heresies that want to discard the church and make follow these so-called superheroes. You have to study about the first church and then see why there are 66,000 protestants sects. The Bible is clear in Matthew 16, 16-19. Jesus founded his church and it is indestructible... it's logical that it is the Catholic, the others go with the heretic Martin Luther. A traitor to the church who betrayed JESUS like Jude and ended up hanging himself just like Jude, who betrays the church, betrays Christ because the church is so important that it is the body of Christ. Ephesians 5, 23. 1 Corinthians 12, 12-28. Whoever leaves the church is not a Christian, he is an antichrist. 1 John 2, 18-19. John 17, 21 clearly says that JESUS wants unity and not sect divisions. Ephesians 3, 21 we must give glory to God forever in his church, which is the pillar and base of the truth. 1 Timothy 3, 15. We should not listen to those who come with new doctrines or stray from God. 2 John 1, 8-11. Galatians 1, 6-10. Isaiah 56.10-11 [10] His guardians are all blind, none of them know anything. They are all stupid dogs, incapable of barking. They would lie down, they would like to doze. [11] Those voracious dogs are never satisfied, and they are the shepherds! They do not know how to discern, each one takes his way, all, until the end, in pursuit of his own benefit. Protestant sects are neither evangelical nor Christian. Only the Catholic Church is truly Christian and evangelical. The others claim to be evangelical, but they are not. Example: The Gospel of John 6, 48-71 says that JESUS truly dwells in consecrated bread and wine, but Protestants deny the real presence and only say that it is a symbol. The Gospel of John never says it is a symbol. As John 20, 21-23 and James 5, 16 JESUS gives his church the power to forgive sins, Protestants say no, that they do not confess and that men cannot forgive sins and therefore contradict Christ and the word of God. John 2, 1 says that Mary intercedes even when JESUS has no plans to perform a miracle, Protestants contradict the gospel and say no. John 17, 20-26: Be one as the father and I are one, be united, but the Protestants separated from the church and among them are divided into more than 66,000 sects. John 19, 26-27 It says that JESUS gave his mother Mary as a mother to his disciple John and equal to the church, she is a spiritual mother. Protestants say no. Matthew 16, 18-19 JESUS gave Peter authority over the other apostles and left him as the main leader of the church, as pope, father or leader. Like Isaiah 22, 20-22, it says that when a king gives the keys to his servant who becomes the father of the community, JESUS is the king of kings and his community is the church, that is why the Catholic church has a pope. In Matthew 25, 31-46 JESUS criticizes very strongly those who do not do works for others, and Protestants criticize the Catholic Church because it teaches that good works should be done. Protestants teach that we are saved only by grace, when in truth we were saved in the past, JESUS gave himself on the cross by grace and saved us, but to do good works. Ephesians 2, 8-10. The key is in verse 10 that they do not read and in another book that Luther tried to eliminate because this agrees with the Catholic Church doctrine and contradicts that evil heresy. That book is James because in chapter 2, 14-26 it says that faith without works is dead faith and ask. Can that faith save you without works? Even stronger is what Jesus will say about works on the day of judgment. Matthew 25, 31-46. Baptism, Galatians 3, 27 says that through baptism we give ourselves to Christ and JESUS said let the children come to me and do not prevent it. 1 Peter 3, 21 also says that through baptism we are saved ... because as Galatians 3, 27 says through it we give ourselves to CHRIST !! He also says that it does not consist of bathing to clean the body in a river or beach, that was the baptism of John the Baptist and it is over. So the protestants prevent children from reaching Christ and deny them salvation. This is only a summary of the gospels, if we had to be other topics in the apostolic letters, we will also see other contradictions of the Protestants with the gospel of JESUS CHRIST! The cross, moving to another faith, prayer to the dead, purgatory, repeated prayers, the images, say that Mary had more children, they say that the bible is the truth and the bible itself says that the CHURCH is the pillar and foundation of the Truth 1 Timothy 3, 15. They say that it does not matter to be in any church, etc. Quite the opposite of what the word of God teaches! ruclips.net/channel/UCRT7jcpX9kOtrlwhyV9X30A
Father, I have been away from your video for a while. Just wondering have you been out in the sun a lot? It’s so beautiful to hear your explanation of what the Lord works on having us to understand. It’s like God is the Doctor in saving our lives, and you’re his nurse.
Thank you, Father for the excellent video explaining the difference between faith and works. It wasn't until I came into the Church that the word "participate" was used & it came as a revelation - rather like seeing sunshine for the first time. Your efforts are deeply appreciated. Pax.
Thank you so much for this message father! I am a new and upcoming Catholic, and this in particular was a facet of faith that I was unsure about. This video came at just the right time! God bless!
*John 14:12* sums up the Catholic view pretty well in my opinion. Catholics do believe that we are saved by faith. But understanding what it means to be faithful is the key. Faith is not shown by empty words. God sees our faith and love for Him by how we live our lives and if we do what he has commanded us to do. *Mark 12:30-31*
When we were young many years ago there was a saying which made us kids roll our eyes, which originated in the early 1900s “Put your money where your mouth (or heart in the 1800s) is.” meaning of course to fully commit everything of value that you had. Faith without works/actions is not “real” yet, think of the marvelous commitment/actions our priests and religious and laypeople ministries make as a life expression of Faith.
Thank you Fr. Mike, for everything you do. After listening to this I finally feel clarity. I have bounced around in many different churches in the past 20 years trying to put words to what I believed in my heart. The "Bible in a year" is also filling in all the gaps and providing context for what I have learned in piecemeal thus far. I am only a 100 days into the Bible in a year, but I am comforted and have peace in my path now. May God lead me wherever He will. I am all in. God Bless You
This is so helpful for explaining the Catholic position. We believe Jesus has come to save us by grace, so we work out our salvation by loving those who He loves! ❤
I’m blessed to be a practicing Catholic. Hod has carried me through many trials. I am so grateful. I praise His Beloved Son and greatly honor His Beloved Queen, Mary! ❤❤❤❤
Jesus and His Word teach... You are saved by faith and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). All who rely on observing the law (commandments) are under a curse (Galatians 3:10). Salvation occurs at the moment you believe the Gospel .....How that Christ died for our sins, was buried & rose again 3rd day..... (Jesus made himself the substitute for our sins & our sins are dead & buried & forgiven / He rose the 3rd day as proof that God the Father accepted his shed blood as the once and final payment for our sins ) (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 / Ephesians 1:13-14/ Hebrews 9:12/ Act 20:28/ Romans 3:25 / 2 Cor 5:21 Colossians 2:13). Jesus purifies sin (Hebrews 1:3). You can know for sure you are saved (1 John 5:13). The sacrifice of Jesus is finished (John 19:30). The Pope and his church teach... You are saved by faith plus works. Obedience to the commandments is a condition for salvation. Salvation is a process from baptism through purgatory. Purgatory purifies sin. You are condemned if you claim to be saved. The sacrifice of Jesus continues in daily Mass. As you can see these two teachings directly oppose one another. One is based & rooted on scripture, the word of God. & the other on the word of men. You must make the choice as to which is true and which is deception. Your choice will determine your eternal destiny.
l’m thinking this Fr Mike video is his best ever. The fact that our proof texting separated brothers and sisters are screaming their opposition verifies that it is. Jesus is the reason for the Catholic Church.
Jesus also said, those who remain in me (faith) will produce good fruit, the branches that do not produce fruit (good works) are cutoff and thrown into the fire!
Salvation and Sanctification are two different things. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (ESV)
to William Kister, thank you for this distinction between salvation of 'be-ing' need and sanctification by 'doing' gift. Thinking works as sanctification gift and heart having faith in need of salvation are inseparable and qualitatively equal. Having faith is a need met by God's gift of faith. That there are extreme tensions between gift and need is due to diseased family member identity need of union occult as hidden, incest connected as substitute mate, grooming of procreation role gift of emotionally and or psychologically vulnerable family members in their roles to purport to presume this gift is a need as a non-economic status of "higher vocation" (Pope St John Paul 2's Council for the Family "Guidelines", TTMHS, PCF, 1995, 35; cf. St Paul 1 Cor 7:25-34) for economic advantages of the families of these groomers by tax-exemption embezzlements and lower insurance cost by fraud.
I have a always believed that you have to have faith in Jesus then you can do works and when you have faith you want to do works for Jesus! Amen Amen Amen 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻
You made this so clear, thank you so much. Been Catholic my whole life, never heard this explained so clearly as you just did hear Father Mike. God bless you. Keep the truth coming....thank you.
James, Jesus’ brother, encourages everyone that believes in his brother to do something with your faith. Don’t just warm a pew every Sunday morning for 45 minutes! Become a pastor, teach a bible study or Sunday school, sing in the choir. It doesn’t have to be a church activity, volunteer in your community, deliver meals-on-wheels, visit people in nursing homes. Let your faith be active not passive!
And also. Works are required for Salvation. Why? Because if Christians don’t do the work of the Church, the next generation will never know Jesus. We need to work like the Apostles - like the Saints. Not for our own boasting but to be the Body of Christ and for His plan of Salvation for the World. You cannot separate Faith and Works. Thank you Lord for giving us your Church so that we might know your Truth!!!
You are WRONG-Works are NOT required for salvation. THE ONLY REQIREMENT TO BE SAVED IS Acts 16:30-31 KJV-And brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED, and thy house. Works play NO part in salvation. Faith plus works is a FALSE gospel. It is 100% Grace by which we are saved. Mixing works with grace is a FALSE gospel-There is NO mixture. The works we do here on earth are the rewards we get when we get to heaven, NOT for salvation. Romans 11:6 KJV-And if by grace, then is it no more of works:: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Salvation is a FREE GIFT only received by FAITH, and going to heaven is FREE, NOT worked for or earned-Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV. Romans 4:5 KJV-But to him that worketh NOT, but BELIEVETH on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. TO HIM THAT WORKETH Romans 4:4 KJV-Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. Salvation is a FREE GIFT and NOT a reward that is worked for or earned. We contribute NOTHING to our salvation apart from BELIEVING the gospel 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV-Death, Burial, Resurrection by Grace alone, faith alone, on Christ alone. PLUS NOTHING, MINUS NOTHING. Very, very sad that people think that they can add their own merit (filthy rags) Isaiah 64:6 KJV to the FINISHED works of Christ Jesus. ALL THE GLORY BELONGS TO GOD.
So a few things: On Matthew 7: Those who said "Lord Lord" were NEVER known by God, so to say they had actual faith is just simply not possible. The point of that passage is that they DIDNT submit their intellect and will to Christ. They even did works but didnt have faith, they only claimed they did. On James 2: Notice what is being defined here. "Faith without works is dead." This does not mean that works are responsible for your salvation in any way, but that instead works are demonstrating a living faith. That's the entire point of the passage; that works justify (or vindicate/prove true) a person when they claim to have faith! It is vitally important to understand the context of James 2. "Justified" is being used not in the theological sense of the word, but the dictionary definition, this is why a person isnt "justified by faith alone" because they are not proven to have living faith if they have no evidence of it! James' original question is: "Does that faith save him" so James is only distinguishing between a living faith and a dead faith. He leaves no possibility to claim works play a role in our salvation, otherwise James would be blatantly contradicting Paul in Romans 4:4-5 - "Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift, but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifes the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness" If our works justified us before God, then we would have a contradiction, but we do not when we understand the correct context of what James is discussing. On Matthew 25: Again, this shows how works are evidence of faith. Both groups claimed faith, but only one had true faith, demonstrated by living it out. Not every claim to faith is a genuine trust in Christ. We all know people who claim to be Christian and live lives opposed to him. This is why we need to understand the Bible in its entirety before making statements that contradict the writings of Paul explaining the gospel like Fr. Mike is doing here. Believe Paul when he writes in Romans 1:16-17 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith'" Live by faith, and you will naturally do the good works that "God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10b). We are saved by Grace through faith alone, and we walk and love in faith, as God has promised.
Fr Mike, we are missing Fr Mark Beard here in Louisiana. I have always listened to you also and have been sharing your talks to everyone via Facebook. Appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for our Faith. We need this so badly in this world now🙏🙏🙏🙏😘
As a Protestant, we are not very different in our interpretations. However, I’ve gotta point out that “saved by grace through faith” is scriptural quotation, but the “working itself out through love” is added. The scripture you quoted says “saved by grace through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not a result of works so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” You see, the impetus for good works is put on Gods saving grace, not in human effort. The teaching of scripture is you simply cannot do actual good works on your own, they must be done via living faith that the Holy Spirit provides. Saying “we must do the will of the father to get into heaven” is not scriptural, while saying “those who do the will of the father will enter heaven” is scriptural. There is a slight error in the one that can mislead. This is the argument prots have been making for hundreds of years. Salvation is through living faith, but it is still only by living faith. True faith. Faith that does. But by adding the “working itself out through love” we may introduce some error that can lead the well-meaning Christian into a soul-crushing effort to earn their salvation. We may not be far from each other though.
Further - the argument you make about the guitar, I think misses the point James makes in his epistle. It’s not that you must use your faith for it to be saving, it’s that a faith that doesn’t work is no faith at all. True, living faith, the kind that saves, is a working faith. Someone who claims to believe that God exists, yet doesn’t truly care what God has told him to do, doesn’t have living faith. It’s a bare belief, without true faith. When Paul says you are saved by faith, he means living faith. James and Paul are addressing different errors, both important, but distinctions need to be made.
I will go with the teaching from the Church, Jesus, Himself, founded 2,000 years ago. Not the concept that was formulated by a man who divorced Jesus' Church around 500 years ago. God Bless!!! Matthew 16:17-19 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
You are saved by faith! A Man can save 10 People form a burning Building and die in the process. If that Man, did not trust Jesus and except him as his personal Savior, I don't want to say where his Soul is going. Trust in Jesus, alone, only Jesus can save you! Praise God! Don Blake ❤✝
But as a guitar player I totally appreciate your analogy, Father Mike!
so that no one can boast.” In Ephesians 1:14, we are told that the salvation explained in verses 3-14 is “to the praise of His [God’s] glory.” If the plan and process of salvation were from ourselves, based on our good works, then, when we achieved the necessary level of goodness to warrant salvation, we could boast. Boasting in our own achievements is out of place, but, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:17, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Many people memorize Ephesians 2:8-9, and it is an excellent synopsis of the gospel, but the passage does not end at verse 9.
That is a brilliant analogy
And I know what your Protestant friends say: “You don’t understand Protestant teaching at all.” And we can’t blame you with videos like this.
Excellent comparison.
You don't do good because you want to earn love. You do good because you love.

Welcome home

The problem with saying you are saved but you still live in the world , shows us that there has not been any transformation from the flesh led life, to the Spirit led life. Those who proclaim they are saved and still embrace the world are deceived.
Salvation is dependent on God, not us. Jesus atoned for every sin we have committed , are doing and will do and He even nailed the punishments for our sins to the cross Coll 2:9-15
Lots of exhotations to maintain a right relationship with God , there is no denying that , but God does not take His gift of salvation away for any sin, the Holy Spirit never takes away His mark on the believer for any sin ,

Love in Christ, Amanda
im not a priest but will pray for you and your family and just add that it would be great if you spoke to a priest about recieving Confirmation as an adult. Then going to confession and partaking in holy communion where you receive the body and blood of Christ, will transform your life. God bless you
Thank you.
I contacted my local Catholic Church and am starting RCIA courses there next week after listening to Father Mike’s podcasts

7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

Eph 2:1-22 is pretty clear . Salvation is a gift.
Salvation is not maintained by you .
Salvation being a gift means you do not work for it as it is free.
Salvation being free does not mean you accept and go back to the world Roman 6:1,2
Salvation being free and not ever taken away from the believer for any sin 1 John 2:1 means you can live for Christ knowing you are eternally secure.

@@Defender_of_Faith This seems to be the concept that roman Catholics are taught , that protestants who go by faith do nothing . That is false as all believers are to be spreading the gospel in word and deed and showing Christ by how they live .
Faith without works is a dead useless faith which is what James points to . However salvation is a gift not worked for and faith in God's promises is paramount not works to enhance God's free gift.

Hey brother thanks for the nice explanation! I used to be a catholic and now I go to a non denominational church who loves the Bible. I’m glad you are making a movement that’s more bible based rather than church traditions. It’s not about Catholics vs Protestants but Jesus’ prayer in John 17, which is for the unity of all believers in Jesus Christ. My hope and prayer is that one day all churches can be united and stand firm against the worldly influence of the world. May God continue to bless your work being the light in the Catholic Church.

Consider Romans 2:12-16
God knows all of our hearts.

From my understanding, and you’ve so far in the video said all things I agree with, we are saved through a relationship with Christ, and if we truly have faith, God will call us to action, to serve, to spread the Gospel, etc.

Not us.

Romans 2:6-7 Here’s what Paul says:
For he will render to every man according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.😉😉
Don’t confuse works with your track record with sin! Works is the actions you take by faith for God. Good stuff! The more you do in love for God and people can get you rewards and crowns in heaven!
That is exactly opposite of what scripture says.
@markmeyer4532
To which part do you take issue? For receiving eternal gifts?
Matthew 6:19-20
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Or do you take issue with your works revealing your faith in Christ?
James 2:19
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
James 2:22 *Speaking of Abraham*
“You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works.”
Thank you Fr.Mike for all your Godly messages. Ive subscribed and listening to your Bible in a year podcast too. You are such a blessing to our Catholic Church. I Thank God and praise Jesus our Lord for working mightily through you. ❤
THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN: IT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS THAT MAKES ATONEMENT FOR YOUR SOUL AND NOTHING ELSE: God, speaking to Moses, declares:
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”-1 Corinthians 15:1-4
The sacrifice of Jesus and the shedding of his blood on the cross is what makes atonement for the souls of believers.
I'm not Catholic but this is the best treatment of faith and works. Faith working by love.
I'm not Catholic, I'm a non-denominational Christian, but I appreciate this video. Very true points here! God Bless you!
God bless you Fr. Mike! ❤🙏
Faith without works is like words without actions
I was raised in a Baptist church and I agree 100% with this truth.
You left the Proteatants for these insolent... Just kidding. I am an ecumenical Pentecostal, and I believe in the brotherhood of all congregations of Christianity.
Father Schmitz is a blessing from God.He has changed my life and I love him with all my heart.
I believe in the most high in this message. Working is a must. Believe in faith and hope is always or all ways.
Basic Instructions Before Living Earth = B.I.B.L.E.
Thanks, Fr Mike. Thank you for your constant encouragement. It's very uplifting. May the Lord bless your efforts. God Bless. Claire.
My parish priest once told me that we were saved at Baptism, we are being saved currently as we live and got to reconciliation, and we will be saved at the end in the final judgment. Thank you Fr. Mike, this is such an important topic. 👏
You also have to believe in what He taught.
Isaiah 56.10-11
[10] His guardians are all blind, none of them know anything.

Amen. Well said
Father, I have been away from your video for a while. Just wondering have you been out in the sun a lot?
It’s so beautiful to hear your explanation of what the Lord works on having us to understand. It’s like God is the Doctor in saving our lives, and you’re his nurse.
Father Mike we need more like you. Thankfully for you.❤
You Father Mike have the God given gift of explaining so clearly the gift of God's complete love. Thank you
Thank you, Father for the excellent video explaining the difference between faith and works.
Thanks for choosing to be a Priest. Moreover, thanks also for striving to be an exceptionally good Priest. Dima
God Bless You
May God bless you Fr Mike, and may you always be in good health both in body and soul. You have helped me a lot with my Faith.
Thank you Father Mike!
This is so helpful for explaining the Catholic position. We believe Jesus has come to save us by grace, so we work out our salvation by loving those who He loves! ❤
James 2:24
See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
❤️
I’m blessed to be a practicing Catholic. Hod has carried me through many trials. I am so grateful. I praise His Beloved Son and greatly honor His Beloved Queen, Mary!
❤❤❤❤
Jesus and His Word teach...
You are saved by faith and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9).
All who rely on observing the law (commandments) are under a curse (Galatians 3:10).
Salvation occurs at the moment you believe the Gospel
.....How that Christ died for our sins, was buried & rose again 3rd day.....
(Jesus made himself the substitute for our sins & our sins are dead & buried & forgiven / He rose the 3rd day as proof that God the Father accepted his shed blood as the once and final payment for our sins )
(1 Corinthians 15:1-4 / Ephesians 1:13-14/ Hebrews 9:12/ Act 20:28/ Romans 3:25 / 2 Cor 5:21 Colossians 2:13).
Finally ! Thank you! I have protestants bugging me about this. Thank you for saying this correctly !
Fantastic as usual ! Thank you Fr. Mike !
The guitar that Fr. Mike mentioned is a 1959 Gibson Les Paul with golden sunburst finish and the man giving guitar lessons is Jimmy Page.
Awesome
l’m thinking this Fr Mike video is his best ever. The fact that our proof texting separated brothers and sisters are screaming their opposition verifies that it is.
Jesus is the reason for the Catholic Church.
Thanks Fr Mike without Grace and Faith and Good Works! Suffering for Souls God's Love Reign ❤️ 🙏🏻✝️📖📿
Jesus also said, those who remain in me (faith) will produce good fruit, the branches that do not produce fruit (good works) are cutoff and thrown into the fire!
Salvation and Sanctification are two different things.
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith.
Great video! Thank you Father Mike!
First 🥇
Your instruction and wisdom are invaluable. Thank you for your wonderful ministry 🙏🏾
Thanks!
The greatest explanation I’ve ever herd thank you 🙏
Father Mike, you teach me something each and every time I truly appreciate it. God bless you.
TO HIM THAT WORKETH
Romans 4:4 KJV-Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
So a few things:
On Matthew 7: Those who said "Lord Lord" were NEVER known by God, so to say they had actual faith is just simply not possible.
And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifes the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness"
If our works justified us before God, then we would have a contradiction, but we do not when we understand the correct context of what James is discussing.
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith'"
Live by faith, and you will naturally do the good works that "God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10b). We are saved by Grace through faith alone, and we walk and love in faith, as God has promised.
Jesus is one you need in fist place
Second you need his church, sacraments aka, means of salvation given by Jesus to us and repentence
Fr Mike, we are missing Fr Mark Beard here in Louisiana. I have always listened to you also and have been sharing your talks to everyone via Facebook. Appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for our Faith. We need this so badly in this world now🙏🙏🙏🙏😘
*Don't be afraid, John.* ✝️
It's contradictory to have faith and not act upon it! ❤
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.
Gal.5.6
It is scriptural.
I will go with the teaching from the Church, Jesus, Himself, founded 2,000 years ago. Not the concept that was formulated by a man who divorced Jesus' Church around 500 years ago. God Bless!!!
Matthew 16:17-19
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
God bless you my brothers and sisters.
So grace is given to us and we have to do the rest of the work. Gotcha. Jesus only did part of the job.
