Do Catholics Believe in "Signs from the Dead"?

  • Does a passing blue jay remind you of a deceased loved one? Does a specific number or color call their loss to your memory? Could they be speaking to you through these signs?
Today, Fr. Mike opens up about navigating the loss of his own mother and finding hope and peace in the midst of that grief. The bottom line is, your loved ones can't cause these "signs" to happen-only God can work in nature in that way. But these unexpected occurrences can be a reminder to pray for your loved ones and to recall the gift of their lives.

My youngest daughter passed away at 10 weeks old in 2021. When you said “my baby was real.” It hit me hard hard. I repeated it to myself when I look at the few photos we have of her. But she was real, she was really here. For a short time we held and loved her. My baby was real. Thank you, Father Mike for this 💗 St. Capri, Ora pro nobis.

On the night that my mother died, I was smoking a cigar in my patio and felt a gentle breeze followed by a hand gently grabbing my right arm. After that, my Dad came out and told me Mom had passed. This wonderful gift is something I will always treasure ❤.

Anyone from the Chicago area is familiar with the tragic fire at Our Lady of the Angels school in 1958 that killed 92 students and 3 Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. One family lost their son, and his Sicilian mother was grief stricken, and could not stop crying. She stopped functioning, and it was up to the husband to keep his family going on with life. Several months after the fire, God sent a visitation to the mother. In her sleep, her son came to her. She could touch him. He was warm. She could smell his scent. He told her he was happy and with Jesus and he was sent to her so she could stop grieving. It worked and she was able to accept her loss and live again.

Yes, I'm a former Chicagoan & I remember Our Lady of the Angels school fire. I had a similar visit from my youngest son who passed away at age 22; he had just begun his career teaching school. I was heartbroken at the loss of this wonderful young man, a bright light in the eyes of his family and students. I was inconsolable. One night in a dream he appeared to me. We were on a beach, the sun was very bright but I didn't need sunglasses. He said "Mother, you can't touch me but know that I am at peace. I love you and will take care of you." I woke up and thanked Jesus and God for this miracle. Every time I see the date of his death 6/21 on the clock 6:21, I have looked away but also ask Kris to pray for my soul that one day I may see & hold him in my arms again. Thank U 4 giving me new insight into the date 6/21. I will now pray for him and ask that he pray for me. Thank you. God Bless all...

Shortly after my husband died, I was sitting and praying the rosary. I had my eyes closed and was crying. I saw my husband sitting next me, looking at me and smiling. He picked up my hand and kissed it and put it back down, something he would often do when he was alive. Then he was gone. I suppose it could have been a dream, but it gave me such great comfort. I believe he was trying to tell me that he was ok and that I would be ok. I understand what Fr Mike is saying about it being actually from God. I believe that, but I also believe it was my husband, that God allowed him to appear to me because I needed it. Before that, I would pray that God would take me in my sleep so I could be with my husband. But after that, I somehow knew he was ok and that I would be ok.

When I was 17 my mom died. The worst event of my entire life. Knowing how sick she was before her death I couldn’t tell her what was on my heart. When she did die I kept saying out loud I just want five more minutes to talk to her. One morning I woke up and couldn’t move anything but my eyes. There was a presence behind my headboard. I thought it was my mom and was so happy that God granted my wish. This happened again the next morning and then again on the third day. On the third day I was shown what was behind my headboard and it was a demon. I prayed to our lord Jesus Christ and asked him to take it away as my mom has always told me to do with evil. It immediately disappeared and was gone forever. Be very careful what you wish for and just trust that God has your loved ones in his arms. God bless you all.

About 10 yrs after my fathers passing and my mother in a nursing home, my sister and I were living together. She suffered from a couple serious illnesses and was unable to live on her own. Her future was always a concern for my parents and weighed heavy on them both, but especially my father. One night while her and I were cleaning up the kitchen from a big meal, I turned towards the dining room and to my shock there stood my father. He didn’t say anything and had his back slightly turned away from us. Almost as quickly as he appeared, he was gone again. I believe he visited to check on my sister to make sure she was ok. Upon hearing our conversation and laughter I believe he finally had peace and could rest knowing that she was being taken care of. What a special gift.

It's not a matter of God not being able to do it - He certainly can very easily. It's about not reading too much into anything. Have masses said for your loved one and attend those masses. Have 30 consecutive days of Gregorian masses prayed for your loved one (The Pious Union of St Joseph does this, along with many other Catholic places). Best yet, spend time praying for those you love while they are alive, have masses prayed fir them them while they are alive. Raise them to put God first in all things, etc.

My grandfather died in October and I requested a Mass to be said for him. I was told it could take a long time, but I waited and kept checking the church bulletin for his name to show up. On January 27th (Saturday) I really wanted to attend the 4:30 pm Mass because the next day was going to be too packed to squeeze it in. I was running out of time to get ready and to get my daughter ready and things kept coming up, preventing me from leaving the house so I reluctantly gave up and settled in my mind to go to Sunday night Mass at 7:00. That night my mother in law called and asked if I have seen the bulletin - it turned out, the Sunday 7:00pm was being offered for my grandfather. And here is the best part: Sunday was my daughter’s birthday. What a special birthday gift! My grandfather loved her, and her baptismal day actually falls on his birthday (that also wasn’t planned). And prior to this happening, I prayed for a sign to know where my grandfather is. I definitely felt like it was answered. Praise be to God!

A true story from last year....I was a police officer for 25 years and had a good friend and partner working together on patrol for many years. After we both retired my partner was sick with stage 4 cancer. Time made it worse for him and he was dying. I went to his house to visit and I could tell it wasn't going to be long before he was going to pass. I sat next to him as he lay propped up on his couch and barely able to talk. Although I knew he didn't believe in God I put my arm around his neck and with both our foreheads touching I whispered, "Don't be afraid, you're going to meet Jesus, just ask for forgiveness" Still not believing he answered, " It is what it is" Later that day he passed. Two weeks later I was sitting in the living room watching t.v. with my wife. We have about 12 pictures of family and one of me in uniform on the mantle. How I don't know but the picture of me in uniform all but flew off the mantle and crashed on the floor. Was that a sign? Did my partner and long time friend ask for forgiveness at the end? I like to think so. After all, knowing him tossing my picture across the room is something he would do...lol

Before my husband died, he told me on video that he would send me special birds to let me know he was there. He was an avid birder. Specifically, he said that a bird would walk up to my beach chair on our favorite beach, and sit next to me. One month later, on vacation at my favorite beach, a beautiful egret did just that. Walked up from the water and sat right next to me sitting in my chair for about 30 minutes. Extremely rare. At another favorite beach, a sandpiper, sandpipers who are afraid of people and run quickly from them, walked up to me sitting in my beach chair while I was half asleep in the sun, and started poking my foot with his beak. Then when I sat up to talk to it, it started running circle around my chair, then started poking my shoes. Even more rare. My husband used to like poking my feet when I fell asleep on the couch. One night while out for a short walk, my husband's favorite bird, an owl (we have no owls in our neighborhood), flew quickly past me, bumping my shoulder, then landed in front of me on the sidewalk, and sat there looking up at me for awhile, before flying away. 6 days after his death, when my windows were open, a red wing blackbird flew into my backyard tree and began to sing its heart out; note we have no red wings in our neighborhood either, but this is my husband's favorite bird song that he used to imitate when we would hike in the wetlands. Then a magnent on my file cabinet with lots of little characters stuck to it, flew off my cabinet, and the bird character on it came off and flew over onto the carpet. Lots of unusual bird stories. I believe he wanted me know he was watching over me.

I know it sounds unbelievable but I had a house and I needed a new washing machine. The day they delivered it they couldn’t hook it up because the hose didn’t fit over the outtake pipe and the sanitary tub was a few feet away. I pulled it out to the middle of the floor so it could empty into the sink. I was thinking I need to get a plumber to fix this problem for me. The people that lived in the house before me had left shelves in the basement near the sink. I never moved them. The next day I heard water running and came down the basement to see water running from behind the shelves. I moved them and there was an another faucet hookup for the washing machine I didn’t know was there. It was on full ! 😅 I asked a plumber friend if they would turn on by themselves. He said no. I believe it was my dad looking out for me. Saved me the money of getting a plumber out . I got rid of the shelves and moved the washing machine to the hidden hook up . Problem solved. This happened four years after my dad died.

Thank you so much, Father Mike.
I loved my grandmother, and still do, so much. She passed in 2020, God rest her soul. She always made great strides to follow Him, and I can only hope that she is up in Heaven with the Lord Jesus.
I was in Wales when she passed on, back in America. I thought that I could see the sun shining all the brighter through my kitchen window when I was listening to the most climactic build up of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" (when the bells start ringing, approaching the Finale).
I thank the Lord that He made the sun shine with His triumph and heavenly victory on that late Summer's day, letting me know that my grandmother was hopefully in the safest and loveliest hands ever.
I give thanks to the Lord for His grace and divine providence, and I also thank you, Father, and that He can speak through you, too.
    God bless,
    Erin 🙏🏻✝️☀️

As soon as we received the phone call that she may not make it through the night we jumped in our car and drove 5 hours hoping to see her before she passed. She made it four more days. During her last days a cardinal appeared at her window multiple times throughout those four days. After she passed on we never saw the cardinal again. She was the most devout Christian I ever knew and by her example and how she lived her life taught me to love the Lord with all my heart. 🙏🏻

I do believe God sends us consolations. Yes, God does care. When my husband passed I had profound grief. God knew I was inconsolable and I had 2 vivid dreams. I also heard my husband call out to me. It sounded like he was in the next room. It was real. I heard his voice. God permitted it. My husband was anointed and received the apostolic blessing He suffered an entire year from multiple illnesses. I like what you said that God is permitting these ‘signs.’ I am not inclined to believe in birds, butterflies, or pennies. But, I do think there is much we do not know.

Thank you for addressing this sensitive topic. I think that the most important thing is to never stop praying for a deceased person's soul regardless of what ever sign you get or think you get. I tragically lost my child. When my kids go somewhere, I have always asked that they let me know that they got there safely and that they are okay, even though they are adults now. It has been so brutally hard to not have a way to know for sure that my child is okay. The unknown is such a painful part of grieving and one of the reasons people look for signs. I know that I just have to trust in the Lord and pray but it still weighs very heavy on this mother's heart.

God allowed many visions to me, I wrote every one down in a journal by my bedside, I’m 20 months into her passing, while the visions have ended, I have a peace and trust in Jesus, a merciful Father, I trust in His promises.

This is a beautiful and comforting message, Fr. Mike! I think the example of St. Thérèse of Lisieux when she said, "After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth" can help us understand this topic too. She promised to send a shower of roses from heaven, and countless people have experienced this grace, receiving a rose after praying her novena as a tangible sign of her intercession. Since she is a recognized saint, and knowing that everyone who is raised to eternal life is also a saint, couldn't it be possible that our loved ones who have become saints can send us signs too? Based on St. Therese's earthly signs, I don't think it's a stretch to believe that our loved ones in the heavenly kingdom can also send us signs to reassure us of their presence and joy in heaven. Of course, nobody but God knows the state of someone's soul at death, but if they have indeed become saints, can't we assume they might also have the ability to send us comforting signs through God's grace? I think the visible display of St. Thérèse's heavenly fulfillment of her promise on earth shows us that our loved ones, assuming they lived holy and devout lives and have been raised as saints, can also send us signs to reassure us of their peace and presence with God.
I also think it could be possible that God Himself, in His infinite mercy, facilitates some form of connection with our loved ones to assist us in our grief. Knowing that tiny moments, like seeing blue jays fly by or numbers on a clock, will give us some sense of peace, He might facilitate these signs to bring us that comfort. He knows that we will find solace in these small signs we receive, and in His infinite mercy and love, He might grant them to us as His loving way of comforting us.
If anything, these small signs can simply remind us of the connection we still share with them through God's love - a testament to the communion of saints and the love that connects us beyond our earthly lives. Even if we will never know for certain if these signs are truly from our loved ones, they still serve as beautiful reminders to acknowledge their lives and pray for their souls.

My mother was dying as a child from blood poisoning -this was before antibiotics were commonly used. She was at hospital and doctors made it clear she wouldn’t survive. My grandmother prayed to St Theresa for help and a doctor from abroad showed up providentially and cured my mother against all expectations. Since then we have kept a devotion to St Therese , including ‘little St Therese roses’ around the house and on family occasions . I still believe that St Therese is watching over my mother and though this wasn’t planned at all and happened ´by chance’ my mother now lives not very far from Lisieux .

I agree about signs. But on three occasions in my life, I have actually had visits and clearly heard the voices of people I was very close to. Each time it happened, it was two to three nights after they passed. The last time was when my best friend died of cancer at 57. My two dogs ran to the door as if to greet a guest. They adored my friend Rick. Then I heard his voice. The message each time is along the lines if, "Everything is fine". The experience is always followed by a tremendous feeling of serenity. I was wide awake each time. I'm not particularly religious, but very open minded.

I have never been given signs, but I have been visited by the spirit of the person who died. In college, my grandmother in law visited me in my dorm room to tell me she passed on. About 20 minutes later I got a call from my mom, and I said "Let me guess, you're calling to tell me Waj passed away". That was indeed the case, and no, it wasn't like she was on death's door and expected to die at any day.

My mom's phone was turned off/disconnected and it rang on my SIL phone after she died. Very strange. A rabbi I love, Rabbi Gellman, who writes a God Squad column finally got a sign from his priest friend he wrote about in his column, years later. Great read if you look it up. I didn't have any earth shattering thing but after I heard my dad died, "In the Living Years" was on the radio on my way to the ER. When I left the catholic church, was because a lot of contradiction from it. I am more at peace now, because I follow more into Yeshua's step, rather than a religion. It used to be confusing, for the things that I can do, and was told not to do them. If you ask what it was, like healing, or bring people a bit of peace from love ones, etc... I understand that a priest tries to follow more so, the bible, instead of what it is really being told within from God/The Universe. I do not care if people call me crazy, or that I will go to he!! Been there, done that. I am not scared of "demons", more so of humans ignorance. Be free from what you may. If you want to be catholic, good for you. I just want you to be happy, and whatever it is that resonates with you. Much love ❤

I do not do rituals or anything to speak to the dead. However, I do pick up energies and stuff. After my mom died, my whole family stayed at my brother's house. I was the only one up. I felt a rush of vibrant energy. I felt my mom. I felt what she felt. She was so happy so free from her pain and all of this world. She came to thank me that I had a priest come visit her in the hospital and make sure she received communion and the last rights. She also let me know she was happy and OK. She didn't say it, but I felt everything telepathically. I only felt her presence one other time and then it was time for me to focus on the living.

If there's a deceased one we're getting 'signs' to think of or remember, it's that God is allowing these signs for us to remember to pray for them. Many saints have been visited by people in purgatory asking for prayers and masses offered for them to move forward. God allows them to do so, and some have said that they've been given the grace to come to ask for prayers. So maybe the whole point of this video is not to ignore the "signs" but to allow them to remind you to pray a rosary or to offer a mass for your deceased loved one. :)

After my father died I was driving up the highway we used to travel together often For about 5 miles I felt his presence in the passenger seat Didn't see him, didn't hear him speaking, just felt he was there for one last ride with me. My mother had died 12 yeas previously. Dad insisted he was going to drive his 13 year old Oldsmobile with almost 180,000 miles up the Mount Washington Auto Road because mom loved that car, and he wanted to take one last ride up the mountain with her. Told me if I didn't come with him he'd do it himself. He was 77 years old. Naturally I went. It poured rain on the drive up there. I was hoping the weather would keep the road closed. Overnight the rain stopped, we woke up to a beautiful sunny day. So up Mount Washington in that old car we went. Had a safe and beautiful trip. Not saying either event was a sign from mom or dad, but just God reassuring me they were still in my life, at least in spirit

Father , I am from India. Despite being born a catholic and bought up in a very strong catholical environment and household and having a very strong catholical ancestral roots in my family , I wasn't much interested in catholism. My focus and interest was shifted to other religions and denominations in Christianity to know the way they are different from us and the impeccablity of difference in beliefs in us and them. Only after watching ur channel videos I realized the beauty of my religion and my church as being the holy apostolic church founded by Christ himself through Peter. Only after watching your videos I gained a strength in my religion and become more interested in performing my religious duties as a member of the Catholic church. Thank you for inspiring us to embrace the beauty of catholism . Do continue your service for the glory of God by posting many videos like this and strengthing our faith in the Catholic church. It is only by your videos that I realized that our church is the very continuation of the church our Lord has established himself and not formed because of heretical movement protesting against and dividing the very Church , Christ has founded. Even now I don't know whether you will see this message or will reply to this message, but I felt that it is my duty to express my Thanks and gratitude to bring this 19yr old teenage sinner back to his home , and strengthing his faith in his holy family. I will always keep you in my prayers Father. Please do keep me in your prayers Father 😊😊😊

Father, is it possible to get your thoughts on the following: My wife took her life after we were together for 35 years. She had bouts of deep depression and anxiety.
I was in a daze... Just lost.
She came to me the first three nights after her passing and sat at the foot of the bed. I was very comforted. On that third night she told me she had to go. I begged her to stay, again she said she had to go. I begged her again to stay, again she said she had to go. I nodded my head and began weeping, I said I know. I didn't see her again.
She had a beautiful voice and was a singer, a Cantor for several churches.
About 3 months after her passing I came home from mass one morning and there were two doves sitting on the piano. As I entered the house I left the door open so they could escape if they wanted. They flew around several times in the piano room, then left through the open door.
There were no doors or windows open for them to enter... Amazing.
    I say thank you God.

I love Fr.Mike he speaks from the heart and has so much wisdom 🙏🏽 This message was so timely, and that's so important about mischevious or deceiving spirits and how to have discernment and being mindful of what is from The Lord and the importance of praying for deceased and not NEEDING a sign because we have faith in God❤

My mother was a very devout Catholic. On my birthday, after she died, a small white butterfly flew into my office and perched on the edge of my desk. The butterfly stayed there all day even though I would pass very close by it as I would get up to leave my office. Everytime I came back to my office, the butterfly was in the same spot. It never moved. At the end of the day, when it was time to go home, I felt a sadness to leave it behind because I felt that was a sign of my mother keeping me company throughout the day. My mother knew it was going to be a sad day for me. We had been very close. I received many flowers from family members and friends, which, of course, I was felt loved and appreciated, but that little white butterfly brought me consolation knowing that my mom had made it a point to be with me all day. The following day when I stepped into my office, my little angel was gone but I was left with a deep sense of peace. Thank you God for having made my special day extra special.

When my mom died 30 years ago, a few days after her funeral and I backed out of the driveway and put the car in drive, a dove flew straight up, (just like in the picture) directly in front of the windshield. That was a clear sign from my mom to me!!! Praise the Lord!!!

When my mom died, the morning of her funeral I had to go to the store and when I parked my car I sat for a few seconds, (she died in the hospital with all of her 8 children at her bedside praying the rosary for her) the last scent I remember with her was from the hospital, all of a sudden it filled my car, it stayed with me until I walked in the store, I knew it was her.
A few weeks later I went to her grave, alone, I was just a mess. As I stood there and cried on this dark and rainy day, the sun was exposed in a very small hole in the cloud and its rays came straight to her grave amid all the darkness around. It made me cry even more but the tears turned to joyful tears thanking God. It was totally astonishing!
On another day, my sister-in-laws, sister, had passed away and there was a mass said for her in my church. I always sat in the same place, in front of a life sized cross that hung over an entrance way. I adored that cross every Sunday. I was looking at the cross thinking and praying for her when all of a sudden her face was superimposed on that of my Lord. I loved Jerri Lee and missed her so I thought it was my imagination just seeing her. I looked away for a moment and closed my eyes. When I looked back she was still there. God is so good to me. Praise be to my Creator and Redeemer ❤🙏😇

I walked into my mother’s empty apartment after her death. Nothing was left in the apartment….no clothing, no furniture……..we had cleaned it out. I was alone and I smelled her perfume so strong!!! And it came out of nowhere. I cried for the first time since her death. I believe it was her telling me everything would be OK.

After my infant son passed away in 2005, I had a dream of being in a hut somewhat like a sweat lodge. With women from my family who had passed away across from me. A fire in the middle, and my son crawled towards the fire, turned into a hummingbird and flew away. I have had a bit of an attachment to hummingbirds since…but have struggled with grief. I sometimes felt like the devil wants me to be angry at God over losing my son. Although the dream was a beautiful and necessary experience in my grief, I do admit that losing my son made me reject God and the church for some time after his death. He would be 19 now and I now believe losing him made me appreciate the gifts that my other children are. And I wouldn’t be able to come to that conclusion without God. I also realize that I don’t have control of my dreams…so the fact that I even remember a dream like that is a gift in itself. But since returning to the church, I ask that only God speak to my spirit in a gentle way to guide me towards him. Thank you fr Mike for your inspirational videos. They have become a regular part of my prayer and mediation time.

I get what you’re saying, Fr Mike. The danger lies in us not taking our faith lives seriously like so many we know today who aren’t and haven’t. We can’t dismiss how we live and that we need to pray and continue to pray for ourselves and our lost loved ones. At the end of the day, we really don’t know for certain where someone is. We hope and we pray 🙏🏻❤️

In a homily concerning normal questions that cause many some degree of struggle to 'definitively know' the answers in order to fully believe, a young parish priest told us that, "In the end, it is a question of faith. As for me, I am willing to bet my life on it." That humble message was delivered likely 25 years ago and I still remember his simple, yet ever so meaningful statement and commitment. Since then, during trying times that are simply part of human life, I recall his wisdom and reinforce my own faith... in essense, double down on my own bet.

I’m very scared for a former schoolmate who died. It seemed that just before death he got into some dark pagan stuff which ultimately led to his suicide. I wanted to offer him words of comfort so I prayed to be able to speak to him, and I have never felt so convinced that I invited a dark presence into my room. I was actually almost too frightened to open my eyes! I prayed that God would protect me bc I wasn’t trying to do anything wrong or blasphemous, I was just dumb and felt so sad for the schoolmate and his anguish. I do believe that kept me safe, like there was a shield. It felt like the presence was the schoolmate in chains with a dark entity who was leading him around. 😭 So freaky. I will pray for him again daily - not to speak to him, but for him!! I will never make the mistake of asking to speak to the dead directly ever again. 🙅‍♀️

I don't know how true this is, but my Grandfather appeared to me a month after his death and told me I could not go with him because I had to take care of my Grandmother. He was VERY firm about this, so I promised I would do as he asked. Twelve years later, when Grandma had been in the hospital and needed someone to take care of her, I was the only one who could do it. I was Protestant at the time, but all of this was true.

To have a moment, minute or reminder of grace which allows us to pray for missed loved ones or just reflect on Gods goodness….is to have peace. i come from an atheist family (I converted to Catholicism/RCIA) but I’ll continue to pray for them and anyone who may need help, forgiveness or prayer, I’d like to believe everyone has peace after death or a chance at salvation.

I love birds, and really just all of nature. Nature brings me closer to God. When I hear a cardinal I think of guardian angels. Sometimes when I’m really anxious or have a special prayer intention, I’ll hear a cardinal. It makes me smile inside. God is always with us, and His angels to help us. Reading the other comments here too, it’s great to see so many people praying for the deceased. Praying for the souls in purgatory is so important. They can pray for us too.

I lost my nephew going on 4 years. The way l feel is when a person dies they are in the hands of God and l trust them to God. They are in a different realm. I went to grief counseling which helped me immensely. I have Masses said for his soul and l say a rosary for him every day. There will also be an empty place in my heart because he took a piece of me with him when he left this life. I now remember him with a smile. The holidays are still hard.

It could be a signal grace. You briefly allude to that by saying only God can make it happen. God sends signal graces in all kinds of ways including a well-placed, well-timed cardinal or blue jay sighting.
