Yeah I’m used to most people bad mouthing it, wish he mentioned the Gregorian calendar though, I believe it was the Catholic Church that promoted it the most. Could be wrong
@@notlogical4016 The Gregorian calendar was made under Pope Gregory (insert number) in order to keep Easter in the correct season. The Julian calendar had shifted by a week or so over 1500+ years, so Easter wasn't lining up with the spring equinox well, iirc. There was also a massive delay in some Prtestant countries adopting it because it was associated with the pope, so the American colonies didn't actually use it until the mid-1700s. They had to skip about a week and a half of days to catch up.
@@MidwestArtManyeah i think that’s why Eastern Orthodox has Christmas and Easter not on the same days as the Catholic Church. Easter orthodox used the Julian calendar I think.
I'm a Catholic seminarian, and I just want to say that I am really impressed by how consistently fair you are towards every group you talk about, especially fellow Christians. It is pretty hard to find people who are willing to present other groups in a positive and unsuspicious way. Keep up the good work, and God bless!
Have you happened to come across Gavin Ortlund's channel, Truth Unites? He's protestant (reformed baptist), In my opinion his behavior is the one of the most charitable towards fellow Christians of the Christian youtubers Ive seen. Also, as a Protestant myself, his videos have done a massive service for me personally, in elevating both my view of history, the Catholic & Orthodox churches and Protestant dialogue relating to C&O as a whole.
Fellow protestant here, I had many misconceptions of Catholicism, but this video cleared up many of those misconceptions and stereotypes. Keep up the great work and have a blessed day!
@@antokaknee. His statements are as if others are misinformed instead of speaking truth about the doctrines that they follow and practice. All one would have to do is use scriptures as the standard. Read the comments and see how dangerous his ideas are. He is behaving as if there are misconceptions or bias against the Catholics. Instead of using Scripture as the standard. For instance, is it okay to pray to the dead? Should you speak to the dead? We know scripture says it is wrong and is witchcraft. You cannot get around it! If someone in my family was praying to dead people but said oh , I don’t believe they are REALLY dead so it’s okay to get them to intercede that would be lying. You don’t measure truth by what someone believes, truth is measured by the Word of God. If it does not line up it is a LIE. Let’s talk about Mary. Mary is worshipped!! Just because someone says they don’t consider it worship does not mean it is not worship. You must use a standard to judge. That standard is scripture. What did Scripture say about Mary? Mary was blessed because God chose her to give birth to the savior but. She as Not sinless! No where in scripture does it state this. Scripture tells us Mary had other children and Joseph did not “KNOW” her until AFTER the birth of Jesus. This contradicts the doctrine of Immaculate Conception and perpetual virginity. I could go on ….. it is clear that they have deified Mary to a status even Jesus did not give her. As a matter of fact Jesus said who is my mother, who are his brethren? They were his earthy family but spiritually we all are that do his will! Where did the Apostles instruct this kind of worship toward her? Did they mention to pray to dead saints or Jesus earthy family? To answer your question again. The Content creator lied because IF he is a believer in Christ Jesus his first stance should be truth in stead of acting as if others are misinformed. I can tell you without any doubt that this would have been a heretical church in the days of the apostles. May eyes be opened and ears able to hear the truth!!
@@CoffeeCrazyWell, I was a cultural catholic for the majority of my life, I didn’t know much about the faith and didn’t live like it, so if you were to look at me 5 years ago and use me as an example of what Catholics were, it would be a misconception. So being a former catholic doesn’t mean that you were a good catholic, and should be taken with a grain of salt.
As a recent convert to Catholicism (I grew up PCUSA like yourself and even served as an advisor my delegate to General Assembly in 2018) , I think this is one of if not the most charitable and accurate depictions of the Catholic Church by a Protestant that I’ve come across. I also enjoyed the comparison of Catholic scholasticism vs Eastern Mysticism, I’ve talked at length about that with friends over the past 5-6 years. God bless you.
Let's get down to facts though. The RCC teaches you can hope for the joy of heaven based on good deeds (CCC 1821). However, Scripture teaches no such thing. How do you respond?
@@ThornyCrown-l5d Paragraph 1821: We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere "to the end" and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God's eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ. In hope, the Church prays for "all men to be saved." She longs to be united with Christ, her Bridegroom, in the glory of heaven: Hope, O my soul, hope. You know neither the day nor the hour. Watch carefully, for everything passes quickly, even though your impatience makes doubtful what is certain, and turns a very short time into a long one. Dream that the more you struggle, the more you prove the love that you bear your God, and the more you will rejoice one day with your Beloved, in a happiness and rapture that can never end. 1 John 2: 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. --- It’s not that the good works CAUSE the salvation, any more than fruits CAUSE the roots of a tree to exist. But any true salvation WILL lead to good works, just as any apple tree with healthy roots WILL bear fruit. Jesus makes it clear all over the NT that following him absolutely demands action. Another good example is Matthew 25: 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ -- Notice that the basis on which Jesus says he’s separating the sheep from the goats is how they lived, since it gives evidence of whether they truly knew him or not. After all, even the demons believe-and shudder.
Catholics do not match the Bible. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Matthew 23:9 for example. The Bible strictly forbids witchcraft, idolatry and necromancy in Deuteronomy 18:9-12. The only exorcism in the Bible failed because they are not Christians. Acts 19:13
I converted to Catholicism a few weeks ago and I want to tell you that your channel is a gem. Very well researched and eloquently presented. Thank you.
I held many of those misconceptions of Catholic until I met some on your Minecraft server began to talk with them instead of attacking them. They are now very close friends of mine through our talks and actually meeting them irl. Catholic are brothers and sisters in Christ, not curropted pagans like I used to think
Thanks for understanding. Us Catholics hold the same view. Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox. Doesn't matter all that much. What matters is were all brothers and sisters brought together through faith in the LORD Jesus.
The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit speak to each other and about each other like they are seperate people. There are passages where God speaks in the first person in the Old Testament, and Jesus will quote these in the first person about himself. He will claim things that are titles of God alone about himself and tells us he can not only hear our prayers but has the ability to answer them too. Psalm 95:7 - for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice, Isaiah 43:13 - Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?” Deuteronomy 32:29 - “See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. Two of these are God speaking in the first person, one about God. John 10:27-30 Jesus speaking, - 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[a]; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” It continues to 33 with the Jewish audience picking up stones to kill Jesus, he asks for what good works do you stone me, and they say not for good works, but you being a man make yourself out to be God. John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. John 5:19-23 Jesus said that he does everything exactly as he see the Father does and does everything the Father does and that Jesus will be judge and the Father will judge no one. John 8, Jesus says that he saw Abraham and Abraham didn't try to kill him like the Jews were and Abraham was glad to see him. John 8:58, Jesus said that before Abraham was, I AM, which is what God told Moses his name was. John 1:1,14 Jesus is the Word who was there in the beginning with God, and who was God, who took on flesh and dwelt among us. A human being is what I am. trenititybrehm is who I am. God is what the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are. One God, who is three people. The only reason the Trinity exists is because scripture teaches that the Father is God, Jesus is God, and that the Holy Spirit is God. Jesus said, "Destroy this temple (meaning his body) and in three days, I will raise it up!" He did not say his Father would raise him, although the Father and the Holy Spirit are each explicitly given credit for raising Jesus. Isaiah 43:11, God said there is no savior besides him. Titus 3:6 Jesus is called our Saviour. John 6:46, Jesus says no one has seen the Father, yet Abraham spoke face to face with God in Genesis 18:19, Moses spoke face to face with God in Exodus 33:11 and Moses and the elders of Israel went up Mount Sinai and saw the God of Israel seated on a throne and ate with him. Jacob wrestled with God in Gensis 32:22-32. Jesus is the one who ascends and descends out of heaven and the appearances of God throughout the Old Testament is Jesus. This is why he said before Abraham was, I am in John 8:58 Gensis 19:24 "Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah-from the LORD out of the heavens." When LORD is all caps it's using God's holy name in Hebrew, and Abraham was just pleading face to face with God to not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Gen 19:24 says Yahweh rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah from Yahweh out of heaven. Jesus is the Yahweh who spoke to Abraham face to face and called sulfur and brimstone out of heaven from Yahweh the Father. Jesus is God with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus IS the Messiah friend. The Trinity is what scripture taught from the beginning because it is from the scripture that the idea of the tri-unity between the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit as being God teaches. Not something come up with later. Mark 1:1-4, the very first verses of the very first chapter of what is cited as the very first Gospel calls Jesus God. It refrences Isaiah 40:3 and Malachi 3:1 where Yahweh says he will send his messanger who will be like a voice in the wilderness to make the way before he himself comes to his temple. Mark says John is that voice in the wilderness, making the way for Jesus. John 1:23 and Luke 3:4 also say the exact same things. In Mark 10:18, Jesus said,"Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God." Meaning: "You call me good when only God is good, do you understand what you are calling me?" To further the point, Christ then lists the 6 commandments that relate to how people deal with each other and asks the man if he's followed those. The man says yes. Then, instead of listing the 4 commandments on how to relate to God and asking if he's followed those, Jesus tells the man, "Follow me," because following and worshiping Christ is following and worshiping God. In Mark Jesus heals the paralytic man, but first, he tells him your sins are forgiven. The Pharisees around thought in their hearts this was blasphemy, because only God can forgive sins. Jesus instantly know what they were thinking and called them out on it, and said to prove to you I can forgive sins, get up and walk and the paralytic could walk. Jesus proved he is God for only God can forgive sins, only God knows the hearts of men (Jerimiah 11:20 and 17:10), and only God can heal people. Jesus did all three IN MARK'S GOSPEL, which is often considered the oldest of the four. Read Hebrews 1:8-12. Old Testament scriptures are quoted that are talking about God creating the universe, and Hebrews 1:8-12 quotes them and attributes the Father calling Jesus God, the Lord who created the everything, who is eternal. Hebrews 1:10-12 Is directly quoting Psalm 102:25-27, where the Psalm is talkling about Yahweh (God) and Hebrews is talking about Jesus, the Son. Philippians 2:6 and 1 Timothy 3:16 call Jesus God as well. So does Revelation 1:17-18. Isaiah 48:16 “Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord God and His Spirit Have sent Me.” (God is speaking, saying he was there from the beginning, and that the Lord God and His Spirit sent him. The Trinity in the Old Testament.) John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 15:26-27 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. John 16:13-15 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. 2 Samuel 23:2-3 (David calling the Spirit God) “The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. 3 The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, Ruling in the fear of God. Acts 5:3-4 (Peter calling the Spirit God) But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
I joined the Catholic Church about a month ago, and it has deeply transformed my relationship with Christ. I used to be a Baptist, and I was caught up in legalism and routine. Reconciling helped me develop a real relationship with the living God again. Thanks RZ for helping me learn about basic Catholic tenets in the early days.
Catholic here and you did a great job! Caught one error, however, at 6:35: The desire to sin CAN count as sin if entertained, wanted or indulged in. If a desire for a sin is unwanted, then it is not a sin, such as unwanted and intrusive thoughts, temptations, etc.
To give an example You get a thought, you ignore it doesn’t matter However You know the thought is sinful, and despite knowing that you indulge it, and if it’s grave matter, it’s a mortal sin if you know it’s serious and still willingly and knowingly indulge in it. However, if you get tempetation, but ignore the urge and continue without it, again no sin. A reassuring thing in catholic theology Is that a mortal sin is = Grave matter ( something serious)+ full knowledge ( knowing it’s serious at the moment you about do it), and still choose to do it ( full consent). Without all 3, it’s a veinal sin. What I define as Lust which is probably most common struggle is engaging is inappropriate sexual actions, or indulging in a fantasy or thought in your mind
There's another error there too... Catholics do not believe in original guilt like Protestants. They have the same view as the Orthodox that we are not guilty of Adam's sin, although he stated the opposite.
Dear Redeemed Zoomer, you're literally the most respectful Protestant Christian I know out there! May God bless you and thank you for making this video, because as a Catholic myself, I shall use this :)
At least for Americans or "first world" country. But if you go to Mexico and ask a random Catholic person if he/she worships the Virgin Mary, they without hesitation would say "Yes, I worship her". (No joke, you can watch the Edgar Pacheco live stream from the Basilica of Guadalupe and he literally ask that, and you'll see people going on their knees all the way to the Basilica with a image of Mary of Guadalupe).
@@chad7070 Could that be because English is a second language for many of them and they can’t articulate the difference between “worship” and “veneration”, which is subtle yet substantial? If translated from Spanish, and so could it be a translation issue as the meaning of the words could seem similar to a translator outside the Catholic context? Additionally: What any individual believes and what the faith teaches are sometimes two different things. There are plenty of “first world” Catholics who go against Church teaching in very substantial ways. But the same is true for most religions. The difference is that what Catholicism teaches is so specific and so decisive when there is a teaching, that it’s relatively easy to see when a practitioner is out of step with official doctrine.
@@JustinColletti Sorry friend, it's not the case at all. We also have words for "Veneración" y "Adoración", and they literally were asking for "Veneración" and how do they do it for "Maria". In any case, in the practice nothing change. They don't know about "hiperdulía", "latría", or any of those fancy words to hide idolatry. And I know what Rome teaches, sadly, this always leads to idolatry, specially with those who can barely read and that has attached pagan practices so intrinsically on their cultures (Read about the "Virgen de Guadalupe", which is basically the exchange of an idol for another [Mary]). Obviously the Clergy is okay with it. And I can say a lot of wild stuff that's happening in countrys like Philippines and so on (III WC's), but for your mental health and mine, better not.
@@chad7070 I’m a bit puzzled by your comment, because in contemporary usage, “veneration” is indeed the correct word for respect shown to Mary, while “adoration” would be the correct word for appropriate respect shown to God. So either they actually got it right and you got confused, or you mistyped it backward here. In any event, even if they DID get it wrong, you could look at it in one of two ways, depending on what you believe the “default” view is. If you were to incorrectly see the default view of humanity, and of the Latin American world, as one of monotheism and Christianity, then it would be somewhat understandable if you thought that potential over-veneration of Mary could lead to paganism. But that’s backward. It’s exactly the other way around. The default view of the world, and of Latin America, IS one of paganism. In that context, the opportunity to venerate Mary is a way of using potential pagan instincts and directing them instead toward the worship of a single God, and toward Christianity. This is one of the brilliant things the Church has done throughout the ages, dating back to at least Paul, in the respect he showed the Greeks in scripture over their “unknown God” as one example. Similarly, the use of channeling potential pagan instincts through Mary toward Christ probably helped Christianity more swiftly take hold in Latin America. Mary, who is traditionally seen as the greatest of God’s created beings within Christianity, has her status specifically because of the grace given to her by God, and because of her intimate connection with Jesus Christ, who is also seen as being God in the Christian tradition. People who soften up on Mariology often unwittingly soften up on their Christology as well. The two go hand-in-hand. To deny Mary veneration as the greatest creature made by God is to swiftly fall into the heresy of Nestorianism in practice. There are plenty of ways to come to Christ, and a healthy Church has ways of helping direct people to Him, whether they are hyper intellectual, or effectively illiterate, or anywhere in between. I hope that helps make sense of it.
I'm a devout Catholic. Thank you. It was refreshing to not hear straw mans and to see someone who respects my Church. I absolutely love the intellectual tradition of the church, I really fell in love with it when taking philosophy and reading Aquinas. This explained what we believe really well.

Thank you so much for representing us the right way! You’re the first person of a Protestant denomination I’ve seen to accurately teach what the Catholic Church believes
Zoomer, thank you very much. As a Catholic marrying a Lutheran next February and a lover of theology, I've struggled over the past few years with people's inability to discuss our differences with open hearts. Often, conversations either fall into theological indifference or turn mean-spirited. Your videos have been a great help to me and my bride, aiding us in understanding each other and others without hardening our hearts. So, thank you, my brother. May God bless you, strengthen your relationships, and guide you in your beautiful work. People like you serve the principle of Christian unity in a unique and wonderful way. I believe we work together, building the Kingdom of Heaven here on Earth. To everyone else, especially my Catholic brothers and sisters, I ask that you always remember the virtue of charity taught by Saint Paul: listen, be patient, avoid unnecessary judgments, and convey the love of Christ to others. As someone who has suffered and still suffers from the judgment of others for wanting an interconfessional marriage, what has most strengthened my faith in Christ has been the love I received from my Lutheran fiancée and from other Christians who saw the beauty of our union. Brothers and sisters, let us love one another as God has loved us.

@@joaco4619yup, they're all bishops in the end, but Archdiocese usally means bigger than standard and/or has an important History. Cardinals don't usually preside over a diocese, but are pretty much like buerocrats.
Correct -- they are internal offices within the ranks. In the Holy Orders there are three ordinations: deacon, priest, and bishop. Within the bishops then the individual may or may not head a specific diocese or just be a "staff officer" to one, so to speak; and archbishops are those holding office in larger or more important jurisdictions. Meanwhile "Cardinal" is an office of the central Church and the individual can be in any of the other types of posting at the same time or just work directly with the Vatican.
Coming from a lifelong Catholic, Redeemed Zoomer did a fantastic job explaining what the Catholic Church is in an unbiased and honest way. Much respect
Such a fresh breath of air to see a Protestant accurately speak about Catholicism. I pray this video goes out into the Protestant community and clears up a lot of those misconceptions you cleared up.
Zoomer, as a catholic-- one learning more every day about my faith-- I'd like to say thank you. I see a lot of hate for you on social media, which may or may not be just memes and good fun (I don't keep up with the lore), but despite your disagreements, I'll say you've always been very kind with how you talk about the church and the faith as a whole. It's so easy to take pot-shots at us, but you keep it very educational, simple, and unbiased. Many times I understand my own faith better after hearing you describe aspects of it that I find hard to understand. Thank you, you have my respect
I like this. I've learnt something and probably need to unlearn some assumptions of Catholics. I know not every Christian & Catholic represents Christ well, but Jesus loves them, so I must love them too. I apologize for my ignorance & self righteousness. God bless those who do his will and may the Holy Spirit convict those who stray [including me.]
As a Baptist, this was very enjoyable to watch. At the end of the day, the nicene creed is what brings us together the most just behind God himself. God bless our my fellow brothers and sister in Christ
The condemnation of Origen was a later accretion. It was not original, as Father Norman Tanner points out. Origen has some of the greatest theological works, and the church is very much indebted to his thought even if he didn’t get everything right!
He helped me get a lot of anti-Catholic lies out of my head. I probably wouldn't have to him if he was Catholic. We need more Protestants like him in the world.
It's because he's explaining what Catholicism believes rather than what he believes. It was a very graceful representation devoid of all criticism, echoing the Catholic churches teaching of itself. Which is why it sounded as if the explanation was coming from a Catholic person.
I love this station because I've been spending a lot of time on Alex O'Connor's station evangelizing to atheists. This is a breath of fresh air after listening and responding to all the negativity from atheist. I feel like I walked into a different world on this site after experiencing all the anger that is spewing out in the comments on that site. But they are hungry so it is worth it. Thanks for being a source of peace -- giving me strength before I go back in the wild.
Excellent analysis. As a former Catholic who is coming back to the faith, I very much appreciated this video. You, sir, earned yourself one more sub. God bless!

6:16 Catholic here. For this point, I'd like to clarify that we don't believe that we're guilty of original sin as if we had committed it ourselves. Rather, we believe that we suffer the effects of original sin, also called the stain of original sin. It's sort of like how a child can be negatively affected by their parents' divorce without the divorce being their fault.
Converted to Catholicism from a formerly Southern Baptist or Non-Denominational upbringing. I appreciate all of your videos, and especially how you and Trent Horn both use respect to discuss Church and faith with everyone. One of the most heartbreaking things with the faith today is the amount of vitriol Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants have with one another.
This was fantastic. Thank you so much for explaining Our Lady. My own supervisor, a pentecostal, asked me if it's true that Catholics don't pray to God. I was stricken. Another coworker, a self professed Baptist, took me aside and told me, breathlessly, that I am saved through Faith alone. Again, I took it silently. I wish they'd all read St. Teresa and St. Louis de Montfort.
I’m Greek Orthodox, always have been but on a surface level. I’m getting deeper into my faith, and catholic people and faith has always been taught to me in a foul way by atheists or other western folks, and you guys are beautiful. Great video @redeemedzoomer - would be good to also mention the religious life and mysticism of the Catholic church which is so important and unique. Benedictine, Carmelite, Franciscan spiritualities and many others are a real gift within Catholicism
I found your channel a few months ago. I decided to listen to you talk about this stuff mostly when I lift weights in the morning. Long story short I’m going through RCIA to become a Catholic. This process and decision took a long time and had many contributing influences, but your channel was definitely a contribution to that influence.
No, catholic means universal. In history, the Catholic church hasn't always been just Roman. And the Roman pope wasn't universal and supreme. @@arturmonteiro8541
I was baptized in a Catholic Church (Mother) but attended an Armenian Apostolic Church (Father). But I truly found Christianity in prison (luckily a relatively short stay). I was amazed by the amount of faith inmates have and it was inspirational and uplifting. We had inmate-organized prayer meetings each evening and even the most "vile" inmates participated and believed. (Black Muslims had their own meetings too and I enjoyed talking to them too. Christians and Muslims, at least in my prison, were always respectful to each other at least faith was concerned.) Now that I'm a "free" man, I take the time to read scripture each morning and pray before starting my day. I'm still learning and have many questions, but I feel so much better. Also, God answered every one of my prayers while I was in prison; although he never spoke directly to me that I know of. Although other inmates claimed to have heard him speak to them. But I'm convinced I met an angel while in the county jail when I was initially arrested. Anyway, this video is about Catholicism and I wanted to thank you for answering some questions I had regarding Catholicism and clarifying some things.

Thank you for a correct representation. Would've liked the Eastern Catholics being mentioned as a bridge between Western and Eastern theological differences.
Hey RZ, I stayed away for awhile because I felt that your videos had been misrepresenting Catholic tradition and practice, but this was a well researched and nuanced presentation. Great explanation RZ. I love how in your explainer videos you never take any potshots at any particular denomination and this one was very fair and accurate. Well done 🎉

I really appreciate this honest description of the Catholic faith.. especially considering it is from a non Catholic. Despite our disagreements I pray we can all be a reunited church of Christ some day. A wise man once said "when the enemy is at the door, feuding brothers reconcile." The world is full of enemies of Christ. I pray our common cause against them can reunite us.
As a Catholic, great video! One minor thing I noticed that isn't quite accurate ... The graphic for the church hierarchy seems to imply that cardinals are in charge of archbishops, who in turn are in charge of bishops. This isn't quite accurate. Cardinals are just bishops who have the extra duty of participating in the election of the next Pope. They aren't directly over other bishops in authority. Similarly, archbishops are just bishops who are in charge of an "archdiocese", i.e., a larger or more important geographical region. They aren't directly over other bishops in authority. Just wanted to mention it in case any one was curious!
Agree with everything for the most part. The Archbishop has some responsibilities for the province but I don't really know if they have any authority over the other Bishops in the province or if it's just over that diocese when there is no Bishop. I think this diagram simplifies a little bit too much in that we need to actually include the breakdown with Diocese/Archdiocese/Province and include the religious orders that don't fall directly in this structure.
Wow. What perfection of explanation. This really helps me in my faith journey to the church God wants me in, specifically from your slide about the differing views on sin. Thank you as always, Reformed Zoomer! 🙏🏾
The point about intercession of saints is a really strong argument for the Catholic viewpoint, so you can ask your protestant neighbour Billy Bob to pray for you, but not the saints? Whom we know lived extremely holy and good lives, and are still alive, even more holy now in heaven?
@MwangazaIssaare you really saying after death there is nothing? No need to remind that that would make you hardly a Christian at all. If it's a Biblical reference all what you want, then in the Revelation are literally described "the Saints" in front of the Throne of God in Heaven and "the prayers of the Saints".
It is always a breath of fresh air to see non-Catholics who do not misrepresent our beliefs or otherwise lie about us.

He is lying to you!! Look up former Catholics, my family were Catholics. Do not be deceived by this young man. Believe the scriptures !!!
@@CoffeeCrazyI do not see how he is lying….? He is stating the general outline of Catholicism and its reason for beliefs…

Let's get down to facts though. The RCC teaches you can hope for the joy of heaven based on good deeds (CCC 1821). However, Scripture teaches no such thing. How do you respond?
@@ThornyCrown-l5d
Paragraph 1821:
We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere "to the end" and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God's eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ. In hope, the Church prays for "all men to be saved." She longs to be united with Christ, her Bridegroom, in the glory of heaven:
Hope, O my soul, hope.
1 John 2:
3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
---
It’s not that the good works CAUSE the salvation, any more than fruits CAUSE the roots of a tree to exist. But any true salvation WILL lead to good works, just as any apple tree with healthy roots WILL bear fruit. Jesus makes it clear all over the NT that following him absolutely demands action. Another good example is
Matthew 25:
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
--
Notice that the basis on which Jesus says he’s separating the sheep from the goats is how they lived, since it gives evidence of whether they truly knew him or not. After all, even the demons believe-and shudder.
I am very impressed, no strawmaning just unbiased facts .
Acts 19:13
I'm surprised this is how I see Catholicism and this is why I don't believe in Catholicism but Jesus Christ.

until you listen to the leader of catholics (Pope) who is pro LGBT and says all religions lead to the same God. oops
Thanks, protestant brother.
Psalm 95:7 - for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
Isaiah 43:13 - Yes, and from ancient days I am he.
No one can deliver out of my hand.
When I act, who can reverse it?”
Deuteronomy 32:29 - “See now that I myself am he!
There is no god besides me.
I put to death and I bring to life,
I have wounded and I will heal,
and no one can deliver out of my hand.
30 I and the Father are one.”
It continues to 33 with the Jewish audience picking up stones to kill Jesus, he asks for what good works do you stone me, and they say not for good works, but you being a man make yourself out to be God.
John 14:13-14
And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
This is why he said before Abraham was, I am in John 8:58
Gensis 19:24 "Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah-from the LORD out of the heavens." When LORD is all caps it's using God's holy name in Hebrew, and Abraham was just pleading face to face with God to not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
Isaiah 48:16
“Come near to Me, hear this:
I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there.
And now the Lord God and His Spirit
Have sent Me.”
(God is speaking, saying he was there from the beginning, and that the Lord God and His Spirit sent him. The Trinity in the Old Testament.)
John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
John 15:26-27
But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
John 16:13-15
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
2 Samuel 23:2-3 (David calling the Spirit God)
“The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me,
And His word was on my tongue.
3 The God of Israel said,
The Rock of Israel spoke to me:
‘He who rules over men must be just,
Ruling in the fear of God.
Acts 5:3-4 (Peter calling the Spirit God)
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
Thank you

Reconciling helped me develop a real relationship with the living God again. Thanks RZ for helping me learn about basic Catholic tenets in the early days.
@ Zeke,
Were you infant baptized Catholic or no?
Catholic here and you did a great job! Caught one error, however, at 6:35: The desire to sin CAN count as sin if entertained, wanted or indulged in. If a desire for a sin is unwanted, then it is not a sin, such as unwanted and intrusive thoughts, temptations, etc.
I noticed the same thing. Still a wonderfully informative video of our faith
To give an example
You get a thought, you ignore it doesn’t matter
However You know the thought is sinful, and despite knowing that you indulge it, and if it’s grave matter, it’s a mortal sin if you know it’s serious and still willingly and knowingly indulge in it.
However, if you get tempetation, but ignore the urge and continue without it, again no sin.
A reassuring thing in catholic theology
Is that a mortal sin is = Grave matter ( something serious)+ full knowledge ( knowing it’s serious at the moment you about do it), and still choose to do it ( full consent).
Without all 3, it’s a veinal sin.
What I define as Lust which is probably most common struggle is engaging is inappropriate sexual actions, or indulging in a fantasy or thought in your mind
Yep
There's another error there too... Catholics do not believe in original guilt like Protestants. They have the same view as the Orthodox that we are not guilty of Adam's sin, although he stated the opposite.
@@Somethingsomething233

Wow, I’ve never heard a Protestant understand and describe Catholic belief so accurately and fairly. Nicely done.
We have to appreciate RZ's efforts

As someone who has suffered and still suffers from the judgment of others for wanting an interconfessional marriage, what has most strengthened my faith in Christ has been the love I received from my Lutheran fiancée and from other Christians who saw the beauty of our union. Brothers and sisters, let us love one another as God has loved us.

archbishops and bishops are essentially the same, except that they preside over an archdiocese instead of just a diocese. Just some extra info.
this + cardinals aren't above bishops nor archbishops, cardinals are just normal bishops (and there have been priests too!) with more obligations
@@joaco4619yup, they're all bishops in the end, but Archdiocese usally means bigger than standard and/or has an important History. Cardinals don't usually preside over a diocese, but are pretty much like buerocrats.
@@Rafael-qd3yqMost cardinals seem to be archbishops (or retired archbishops) of archdioceses: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_cardinals
@matheuscaneta1194non bishops have been cardinals in the past.

Watched the video. The catholic church is still a false church that emphasizes pagan traditions over Scripture
"Jesus is still human, also Origen is stupid" floored me! 🤣
The condemnation of Origen was a later accretion. It was not original, as Father Norman Tanner points out. Origen has some of the greatest theological works, and the church is very much indebted to his thought even if he didn’t get everything right!

Catholic revert here. This video was excellent. Concise, direct, and most of all, accurate. Thanks for posting.
This may be the most charitable representation of Catholicism I’ve ever seen from a member of a Protestant church. Thank you!
As an Eastern Catholic: Great job! I feel very well presented and represented by that video.
Flee from the false church. Return to Scripture
Wow! Thanks. I'm Catholic and i really appreciate this and I'm so excited to watch! I love your channel, RZ. Keep it up!
You're a better Catholic Apologist than most Catholic Apologists.
Thanks for the charitable and accurate overview.
God bless you. Praying for you!

The world is full of enemies of Christ.
@MwangazaIssa That's so interesting you think they're dead. I assume you also think Jesus is dead? A liar too, perhaps?
@MwangazaIssa I don't know what religion you are, but in Christianity those who put their faith in Christ do not die. John 3:16
@MwangazaIssa Now you've got it! So, the question remains, do you believe in the ressurection or do you think Jesus was a liar?
@MwangazaIssaare you really saying after death there is nothing? No need to remind that that would make you hardly a Christian at all.
If it's a Biblical reference all what you want, then in the Revelation are literally described "the Saints" in front of the Throne of God in Heaven and "the prayers of the Saints".
Nigerian Catholic here, just so so so impressed.
I didn't think a non-Catholic would be this fair and unbiased in explaining stuff.
