A few disclaimers:
1. While I tried to mention everything, what I focused most on was influenced by what I am (American Mainline Protestant) so I focus most on the history of Protestants and American Christians.
2. This is nowhere CLOSE to an adequate summary of Church history. This is meant to give people a starting place to begin learning more in a way that's understandable to all.
3. It's impossible to make this completely unbiased, so I understand that the way I tell some of these narratives are disputable.
Also, thanks to Bill Wurtz's famous "History of the entire world, I guess" for the inspiration.

I have a feeling that you can sum up most of the church’s history as they telling different groups of people “Stop it, That is NOT what Christ meant.”
Not sure i quite agree with your assessment of the "mainline" church, but i do have to say this is one of the best quick denominational breakdowns I've ever seen.
👍
Yeah, I also disagree with the assessments of "mainline" churches since it feels incredibly America-centric.
Not only are much of the large body denominations VERY much not liberal (Eastern and Oriental Orthodox stick out in particular), but are inherently rather conservative, and still rather influential. It's incredibly noticeable, unless you're tunnel-visioned like this dude and completely ignore both East Europe and Asia.
It's a shame too, because it's a noticeable damper on an otherwise pretty great instructional/entertaining video.
Yeah, I feel like hyper liberalism is more of a fringe thing with most denominations. At least I think it is with Southern Baptists.
@@beastlycrawdad6412 I think it’s a little more complicated than that. It’s true that a lot of mainline churches in America toe the Democratic Party line, but most of them don’t usually go much further than that (at least on economic issues).
At any rate, most of those churches are losing their congregations pretty rapidly because when people believe that God doesn’t really care if they go to church and realize that they can hear what they’re hearing in church pretty much anywhere else, most of them don’t really see a reason to keep going.
I hate how accurate this is for being only 15 minutes
Why do you hate it.
It’s kinda inaccurate lmao
I felt that lol
It's incredibly inaccurate, though.
I found myself cringing from inaccuracies just 20 seconds into the video, and it keeps going.
What's inaccurate just 20 seconds in is that the apostles were told, that Jesus would come back before the disciples had preached throughout Israel [Matthew. 10:23] or when the gospel has been preached throughout the world [Matthew 24:14]
There are also verses where Jesus tells us that he would return before all of his disciples had died [Mark 9:1; 13:30;] "Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done."
@@Thor.Jorgensen Those verses are referring to "the Kingdom" expressed in the events like the Resurrection, the Pentecost, or the destruction of Herod's Temple. The old kingdom of Israel is no longer God's sole inhabitance, but he has come into the world for Jew and Gentile alike. That is the New Kingdom (or New Testament), not the Second Coming or New Creation that Revelation talks about.
This is a prime example of why pride is a sin. Everyone was worried about being right that they veiled the reason a church exists in the first place. Thank you so much for this video.

It was good untill he got to the reformation and then basically ignored the Catholic Church except to take a jab one or twice.
I agree as a Catholic I was a little confused on a few things but then I realized he was saying the same meaning differently for a few things but with the Reformation (the creation of Protestantism not talking about the Catholic Reformation) obviously as Catholics we have a different view on that but I just ignored that since he said he's American Protestant

Its called Catholic Church
As absurd as it sounds, this is actually happening in Catholicism. Yeah, virtually everyone in charge is a screaming secularist, but nobody but a really committed Catholic wants to become a priest these days. Priests are completely distrusted with children, so predators don't want to join. The secular world absolutely adores homosexuality these days, so there's no draw there anymore either. The pay stinks. Everyone hates them. Why on earth would someone join? Oh yeah, because they believe.
Fast forward ten years, you aren't going to find many replacement bishops that aren't believing priests. Fast forward twenty, you won't find many replacement cardinals that aren't believing bishops. Fast forward one old man dying...

On the whole "non-denominational churches are actually Baptist" bit, I feel like most start as Baptist churches and keep growing and growing. Then at some point they bring in a younger pastor who wears ripped jeans, Jordans, and may or may not have a forearm tattoo, and then suddenly "West Lake Baptist Church" magically turns into "Lake Church"
Yeah, they eventually just become mainline churches, from what I've heard.
Many actually do belong to the Southern Baptist Convention, SBC, the largest Protestant denomination in the US, but its not really advertised and they'll drop "Baptist" from the name to appear more inclusive.
Maybe this pastor lives somewhere in Montana and wears cool sunglasses (please someone tell me they get the joke)

@@lot8113 Elaborate: what do you think he got wrong?
@Matthew Dunphy Portrayal of Islam is quite inaccurate. Most sources say that the treatment was overall very favourable. Their "conquest" just meant a change of leadership for the people, and they allowed Christians to stay Christians, assuming they would be availible to paying more taxes. That is a great, great deal. I really can't understate that. It was so great in fact, that some people started converting over time to Islam.
The portrayal of late developments of the situation is wildely biased and equates to straight up propaganda.

early Christians did not have bible, they had Apostles and their teachings, which later become sacred traditions, later compiled by Catholic church into bible
"Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours." 2Th 2:16
@gda86pl That’s wrong. They had the Old Testament and were very familiar with the teachings of the apostles. Later down the line people began to forget the teachings, so they compiled a Bible. But as he says in the video, the real universal church hadn’t really split during the Constantine era so it was also the Orthodox Church who compiled the Bible as well as the Catholic Church. So at that point it was just The Church before the great schism.
Paul or Peter I am not sure which one, I need to study to remember, calls his own writing scripture and Paul also said “All scripture is breathed out by God.” So he is basically saying even what we have written isn’t from us but from God. So we did still have scripture at the time, just not a fully compiled Bible. Which makes sense considering actual books didn’t become popularized until 200-300 AC.

@@icarojose6316 I get fellowship is important but that doesn't mean it's a necessity to go to church Jesus said in John Chapter 14:21 "he that hears my commandments and does them he it is that loves me and he that loves me shall be loved of my father and I will love him and I will manifest myself to him" and according to John 12:35-36 then Jesus said to him yet a little while is the light with you walk while ye have light lest darkness come upon you for he that walks in darkness knows not where he goes while ye have light believe in the light that ye may be children of light and also in proverbs 6:23 "for the commandment is a lamp and the law is light and reproofs of instruction are the way of life" meaning the entire law found in the books of Leviticus, numbers and dueteronomy is supposed to be kept because Jesus said to follow and believe in the light which is defined as the law except the sacrifices of course because as it is written in 1 peter 2:5 " ye also as lively stones are built up a spiritual house an holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ" because Jesus confirmed in the last supper in mark 14:23-24" And he took the cup and when he had given thanks he gave it to them and they all drank of it and he (Jesus Christ) said this is my blood of the new testament which is shed for many ". And his blood which is shed ultimately allows us to be cleaned of our Sins and to enter eternal life in the first place Romans 6:23 for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life from Jesus Christ our Lord
Apparently that means baptist
Please don't take this as some sort of forced conversion. It's just that I recently found out about this book and it's been really enlightning to me.
If your confusions regard the New Testament, maybe you could take a look at St. Thomas Aquinas' Catena Aurea.
There he covers all four books, chapter by chapter (or even versicle by versicle), giving many explanations from other Saints and scholars, and adding his own inputs for clarification.
I know the Bible's language can be difficult and confusing sometimes. You don't have to agree with what St. Thomas claims, but it seems to make so much sense and is helping me a lot on reading more the Bible.

@@griswoldthegoblin9420 * Non-denominational has two meanings: (1) a church that is not part of structured denominational organization but has a set theological-tradition of Christianity it is a part of (like an independent Baptist or Lutheran church with no connection to a denomination organization); or (2) an independent church that doesn’t have a set tradition in that it’s theological-tradition is a combination of several theological-traditions, for example a church that is some sort of combination between Baptist, Pentecostal, Mennonite, Wesleyan-Low Church Methodist, and Low Church Pietistic Lutheranism all wrapped up into one.
* Interdenominational(ism) has four meanings (a term used mostly by Evangelicals): (1) cooperation between multiple denominations and/or non-denominational churches that may (most of the time) have similar beliefs but aren’t one denomination for historical/geographic reasons or have medium-sized theological disagreements that haven’t impeded their cooperation (it ranges between Full Communion to Ecumenicism which are terms mostly used by Catholic, Orthodox, Theological Liberal, High Church, and American Mainline churches); (2) It can be synonymous with an independent/non-denominational church that is has a theological-tradition that is a combination of several traditions like a cross between Mennonite and Pentecostal; (3) A church that is a member of multiple denominations; or (4) A denomination that was founded by a merger of multiple denomination that have had their own historically distinct traditions but have come to a theological agreement (it is similar to what the Theological Liberals and Continental European State Churches call “United and Uniting churches”).

Hey Zoomer thanks for making me legit chuckle and laugh thru the history of my faith that i was ignorant of (raised "non-denom")

To be honest Bible school talks more of theological discussion than the history of the entirety of Christianity. Personally speaking as Jesuit, I did learn a lot and had a lot of discussions with fellow classmates and altar servers about the Bible and how we can make it more approachable while still retaining its fundamentals and core teachings.
Tbf you don’t really learn anything in Bible School lmao. Better off leading exegesis or just straight up reading the Bible
@@thestranger4894 I don't know where you are from but bible studies have been impactful to me and many people's lives. Forgive me speaking out like this but it just seems most people on the internet have the same response as if doing these Bible studies is meaningless. Maybe it is just me.

The fact that the Eastern Orthodox Church is barely mentioned in the video proves that.

I was mostly with you until the very end when you accused the mainline denominations of not having any believers in them. God loves us and lives in us and Jesus teaches us and the Spirit guides us also.
Looking forward to your attempt to "retake" the mainline churches... That should be fun!
As an Anglican Catholic who wants nothing more than unity, it does hurt to see how non-Christian some denominations have become. I think we can solve a lot just by reintegrating with one another. Good video!
I think the main goal of the enemy has been to keep us fighting each other.
I'm not a fan of the disunity either but I think it's inevitable. Unity has to be based on something, and besides the creeds there's so much disagreement between traditions and denominations that it's impractical to try and practice those beliefs together.
Like, as one religion? I'm sure that's mentioned in the bible somewhere.
Why not just become a Catholic then? If unity is most important then why be part of a denomination that's not in communion with the biggest church?
@@ttex_3450 I had a similar thought. Not criticizing OP but I know a lot of Anglicans who say they care about ecumenism and unity but would never join a baptist or pentecostal church. "Unity" tends to be subjective.
Such a good video, he legitimately summarized 2000 years of history in 15 minutes! As an Orthodox Christian, I highly believe that the sentence at the end should become a real thing, and that we should have another great reunion. Amen, departed brethren.
Honestly. Yeah. Individual differences be erm damned. That's more a more of how divided and fleeing we've seemingly adopted in various aspects. There's a lot of good perspective all around, but the core is generally there. The genuine support of the fellowship feels lacking in lots of areas I've been.
