@@AR15andGODYeeaa. I was kinda shocked how people could believe Calvinism to be true, then I understood it a little more and started leaning more towards that way (a lot of smart studied believers start going that way) but I’m at the point now where I’m thinking “somehow both have to be true but that’s impossible”.
Anyhoo, I’m leaning towards Arminianism again but convinced Calvinism has to be true inside of that for at least some people (Paul for example).
I’m bout to read Nicholas Cambells book (Christ is the cure) on the two views, should be a really solid read.

@@ZachFish- I don't think its impossible for both to be true, I think the term is antimony, the idea that two (seemingly) mutually exclusive things are true at the same time. Its the case with the trinity, how can God be one and three persons? And Christ being both 100% man and 100% God. You should look up "Understanding Antinomy: A Key to Peace in the Calvinism Debate?". I would say that's the closest to where I land in the debate. There's also a great quote from CS Lewis' Perelandra that I really like too: "Ransom could not, for the life of him, see any difference between these two statements [whether Ransom had completely lost his free will or whether he had been completely freed from any outside influence]. Predestination and freedom were apparently identical." I would say that just as animals exist in a state below reason, so too some things must be understood in a state above reason :) Hopefully that helps

Almost cried hearing, “I realised that my story, just like the story of every believer is a story about God trying to find me”. I had this exact same realisation too. Every experience that I had and life decision that I had made in the lead up to me becoming a Christian is evidence of God drawing me closer to Him, rather than it being a choice that I made for myself. If someone told me this time last year that I’d stop being a long-time agnostic and become a devout Christian, I’d have laughed in their face.

@@ZachFish- Arminianism isn't really a thing. It's really just Calvinism (a new interpretation and church founded in the 1500's) vs Christianity. Jacobus Arminius happened to take up the role of arguing for what most people already believed for 1500 years. If your a minority group and you want to attain more credibility for your cause, it's really effective to repackage the argument as one of between two equal choices. Calvinists were able to do just that. They reframed Arminius' arguments as if he were representing new ideas that he came up with vs. Calvin who also had some new ideas. Instead of David vs Goliath, it's Coke vs. Pepsi. Masterful marketing. In reality, all of the verses Calvinism relies on have easy explanations as to how it's referring to corporate election, not personal election, meanwhile predestination undercuts the entire foundation of the purpose of the creation and our role in it. Easy choice.

It's wild to see how young your audience is, based on the comments it's mostly teenage boys struggling to find their place in the world. As a slightly older 20-something who never lost the faith (though as anyone who knows me can tell you, I've a long road to reach holiness, God help me), I have some simple advice for all you young men:
Never give up! Not on yourself or the faith. If you fail by sinning miserably at something, or if something horrible outside of your control happens to you, don't do anything reckless. You mustn't let your shame or your anger let you do something you'll regret even more. When hard times come, the best thing to do is "take the L" and soldier on. That doesn't mean do it alone, for indeed the Church, the heavenly host, and the Lord Himself is with you should you seek righteousness and rest.
If you sinned and then suffered its result, repent of it, confess if you are able, and do better for everyone's sake. If something completely out of your control happened, the wisest thing to do is accept whatever occured with humility and perseverance to continue doing good, as Job did. That's easier said than done, but in my experience it's easier to leave the uncontrollable things in God's hands; Perhaps it may have been out of your control then, but by God's grace you may find a way later to bring it under your control for the sake of everyone, like the doctors (many of whom were Christian) that developed vaccines for smallpox and eradicated it.
Keep the words of *1 Timothy 4:12* close to your heart:
"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

    • @KnoxEmDown
      @KnoxEmDown 10 месяцев назад +13

Also, please don't be an "internet Christian" that hops around claiming to be different denominations (or more horrifyingly, different religions entirely) as the whim strikes you while continuing in your sins. I know this is especially hard for boys raised by the Internet more than their parents, but cruelty towards others on the Internet (yes even when it's funny and/or the people you're mocking are massive sinners/hypocrites themselves) is still sin. I was never a "net Christian", but I am having to repent of being cruel online despite knowing better. Love your enemies, and have some genuine conviction in your beliefs, even if they are ecumenical in the Christian sense and you aren't ready to sincerely commit to a church. Woe betide anyone who blurs the line between Christendom and pagan or misotheist doctrines. Don't even get me started on what is/isn't heresy beyond the essentials, we'll be here arguing nuances and semantics until the Second Coming.

I have always been incredibly interested in science and evolution, which often led me near the point of total atheism (Though, mostly thanks to my very conservative (But not Christian) Father, I was always right of center). Eventually I found your channel and really began to develop an interest in Theology (which stemmed from my preexisting interest in Philosophy, even read a little, tiny bit of Kant) and I eventually found myself being a Lutheran, recently I even began to attend an NALC church. I do in-fact hope to get baptized soon, hopefully in that church. I do also have the problem of being in a suburb of Philadelphia, which is practically just as liberal as your area, and I often feel that in school I face similar trials to the ones you describe. Of my friends, the vast majority are Atheist or Agnostic, and only 1 is actually right of center like me. But seeing as im an Autistic, Nerdy, and Abrasive middle schooler, they are all I have and I hope to convert them.

i was building a mob farm in minecraft, and your pastors video started autoplaying, so I decided to see whether I would have a similar experience to yours; playing minecraft while listening to theology/preaching. Most of the interviews played through, and I have not so thoroughly enjoyed something in quite some time. Gore and Fr. Robinson in particular were A JOY to listen to, but this format of Q&A with them about important theological topics is so delightful to listen to. Constant justification by Scripture, endless knowledge on the Church and the teachings of it, and proper deconstruction of modernity in it's entirety. Thanks Zoomer.

Hi Redeemed Zoomer. I loved listening to your story. I work as a summer camp councilor, where my job is to basically share Jesus with elementary and middle school kids. It can get discouraging at times because you just don’t know if the spark you lit will grow or be snuffed out when the kids leave camp. There’s always a fear that your seeds won’t land among good soil so to speak.

It's crazy how we have a really similar testimony (except mine is more recent and ongoing) I mean I grew up in a small Christian town but I moved to a leftist city when I was 11, and it seemed only the gays would except me there, but I literally was a marxist, had an emo phase, dated an atheist, claimed to be panromantic, and for a day genderfluid but it just felt wrong. I wanted to convert to Islam for a week or so and then I cried and felt like that was blaspheming our sweet sweet Yahweh (I couldn't 've cared less about Jesus at the time ) (8th grade was pure drama) of course at the point where I wanted to be Muslim I considered more conservative ideologies started watching redeemed zoomer discovered therians which made me decide transgenderism is silly. And this was like March this year so for literally 3 months Satan's ideology and gods kingdom battled for me and ultimately God won me over. It was a hot mess of a year but I can say truly after I have been baptised 12 days ago I have the holy spirit.

I appreciate you sharing. I attend a Lutheran church. One thing I like about Lutheranism is that it's focused on the words of the Bible and not the interpretations that aren't in it. My views on eschatology and God's judgment might differ slightly with other Lutherans or your church, but they aren't different in regard to the means of salvation, the creeds, the solas, etc. I don't think any church is unanimous on things like eschatology.
The only really big thing I differ on with most people in my church is statism, since I'm a voluntaryist. Unfortunately, in any church the entire spectrum from nearly totalitarian to anarcho-capitalist can be found, so politics is just one of those things you kind of have to surrender to some extent to be in Christian fellowship.

12:08 Yup, I relate. I had a Muslim girlfriend once because I thought Orthodoxy and Islam are similar enough to be friends (In Bulgaria there are a lot of Muslim people). I know exactly what you mean when you say "it ended up a disaster".

My story: "I believe because my grandma believes and my parents believe" -> zealous Catholic, but without studying theology -> Catholic Traditionist -> almost converted to Orthodoxy -> then traditionalist -> almost converted to Islam -> conservative post-VC2 Catholic -> first time I started to wonder about Calvinism -> then Conservative Catholic -> Continental Reformed -> Presbyterian

My story: Raised as grandson of Greek immigrants in Canada. I believe because my family believes (Greek Orthodox).
Ten year old me: “Mom, what if God’s not real?”
      Re-assured myself of God’s existence.
Twelve year old me: “What if God’s not real?”
      Re-assured myself of God’s existence.
Been fully devout ever since. Always participated in Easter Fast, my mission is to eventually do the fast for forty days like the Church teaches, last Easter I did 21 days, even inspired my parents to take it more seriously. My plan is to increase it by one week each year until I reach the full forty days. Also been trying to quit watching pornography, thanks in part to Zoomer here, God bless you. God bless all here.

My story: Born into the Jehovah's Witnesses > Mom gets booted when I was 8 so we were able to celebrate holidays and bdays > Previous JW memories caused me to be angry and think God really hated me so I was borderline athiest/agnostic by the time I was 12 > Befriended a guy who so happened to be a Lutheran-Christian and he understood where I was coming from so he started to teach me what Christianity was really all about and that my previous exp was indeed harmful (I was 21 at this time) > I am now moderate in my beliefs and somewhat teeter between Lutheran and Catholic when it comes to my beliefs (oddly enough) esp since I realized my late grandpa was a devout Catholic so I figured hey why not explore it and give it a go > Today at almost 29 I am still exploring my beliefs and reading all sorts of versions of the Bible while attending sermons, masses, you name it; on a semi regular basis. I still believe in evolution and I believe God exists outside of time which means 1 day for God could translate to 1000 years for us (for example). Am I a perfect Christian? Heck no. Have I reflected and grown throughout my journey? Yes. Now all I need to do is admit to my family that I am Christian--but because of everything we went through thanks to JW, I'm more or less debating on concealing my faith to only myself.
Sorry for the looong comment but I wanted to share my theism story too as of yet :P

I will pray for your continuing discernment and for you to be given the fortitude to tell your family about your faith. Your comment unexpectedly resonated. I suppose it's because I also had a chaotic internal journey to strengthen my faith with none of my immediate family being very religious and I have seriously considered converting to Lutheranism in the past.
We are not all called to be amazing apologists, but we can all be witnesses to our faith by everyday example and I can see that you going strong for this far.
What I most advise is to definitely attend church every week, whichever that may be for now. This is my personal experience (I am Catholic) but a regular, reverent sanctuary from all worldly distractions, in fellowship, is so very necessary, and an excellent way to motivate and structure my personal Bible reading.

The beginning of your journey is similar to what I’ve been going through so far. Right now, I am struggling with the fact that, of the only 3 friends I have one practices arts that are against God, another one believes in Him but is not christian, and the third one has a more philosophical view of Him.
I love them all and they’re most definitely not bad people. If our relationship has to end, the only thing I ask God is that it does in the most subtle way possible, without me saying “I don’t want to be friends anymore”. 😢 I don’t want confrontation.
I tried avoiding them, but it’s been difficult, especially one of them. We’re best friend, so it’s hard not to miss each other.
His will be done. God bless everyone.

pi does not have a decimal representation with finitely many digits, but it is not infinite information. it can be expressed in finitely many symbols, for example, as 2*arcsin(1).

A bit late to comment, but we share very similar origins. I was, and still am, a "leftist" although I don't like using that word anymore because of its generalizations. I recently came into faith but I haven't definitely found a denomination as I'm still learning (although, Presbyterianism makes more sense to me). Nonetheless, I am still a socialist but without the progressive connotations that are attached to it by the liberal crowd. I prefer to focus more on socialist economics paired with a socially traditional viewpoint, which is where faith comes in. I think I'll always be a socialist, and a Christian one at that. Politics is not so black and white as many people perceive it to be; I can be socialist and a conservative Christian. I'm not alone in my views, and I'm currently working with other fellows to create a group for like-minded Christian socialists. We need to show others that we can break through the stereotypes that "all leftists have to be atheist" or that "all Christians have to like free market capitalism".
