We are a family of four, working hard to eat healthily, live frugally, pay off our mortgage early and save/invest for retirement. We’ve lived below the poverty line for many years and have now got our heads above that line. Our household income remains well below the national average in the UK but we have paid off all of our debt, including our mortgage.
It’s all hands on deck to save and invest for our retirement and for our children’s futures. We hope that we can put them in a position where they don’t have to struggle financially, as we have, and that we can break the generational cycle of poverty that we have experienced.
We all have different issues with food, including food sensitivities, so I shop to work around those considerations.

Hybrid hens are very sweet natured ,mine seek out petting time ,often one will hop up to achieve this ,some of the pedigree ones do too ,but hybrids are renowned for being super chilled around people and great around children .

Lovely to see Eggsmerelda make such a good recovery, it’s amazing how quickly animals can recover sometimes isn’t it. While I don’t use the oven often, when I do I only cook I thing at a time. I’d be interested to see you show how you plan cooking multiple items together as I’m always put off by things needing different temperatures. I’ve also been concerned about mixing sweet and savoury in case the sweet stuff picks up the savoury flavours.

Your chick peas inspired me to plan some spicy chick peas (dry) this coming weekend, which is a 3 day holiday and the unofficial start of summer here in New England. 🙂

You did very well , one my girls was bit off with the beginning of sour crop ,I massaged her crop a few times ,next day she was fine ,such a relief ,it’s a good idea to once a week put apple spider vinegar ( with the mother ) 20 Ml per litre of water once a week ,it balances the crop PH and helps to prevent sour crop .,make sure it’s the only drinking water available for a Day ,
I wash and clean there free standing drinker every day ,so have a routine of one day week they get apple cider vinegar water.
Love to you and your girls ,good idea too to keep a poultry purple antiseptic spray it’s invaluable for foot injuries ,i’ve had hens cut toes on stones while scratching about ,the purple spray stops any little cuts getting infected,as they won’t stop scratching about .
Love to you yours and your pretty hybrid girls.

Lovely to see how caring and good you are to your chickens. I didn't know they could be so adorable actually sitting on your lap and liking affection and sleeping. So nice. I use to get cardboard boxes from my supermarket to ship things in. When they unload their boxes to put stuff on the shelves I would just ask him if I could have some of the boxes. I've never been turned down. If they have an opening on the bottom i just put a piece of cardboard inside and it's just fine. Never had any trouble.

Great video Tess. I recently had one of our hens with sour crop and impacted crop as well. I ended up emptying her crop as it was full of liquid then gave her water with apple cider. As she'd lost quite a lot of weight I fed her some scrambled egg doused with olive oil and gave her several crop massages and next morning she had an empty crop. I think it was caused by long grass.

What a lovely chilled out chicken. Was the protein in the scrambled egg the answer? Great free storage ideas. My husband loves removing labes, he loves this job. He used metholated spirits for stubborn labels. We used to be able to pick up free poly styrene brocolli boxes from our local super market. However, now we have moved to a more rural areas shops sell tham from between $3 to $8 each. The $3 ones look used whereas the $8 look brand new. I used these boxes from storing craft to making wicking vegetable containers.

I’m glad Eggmerelda is better after her brief illness. It’s hard when an animal gets sick and you aren’t sure what is wrong with them.
I had to separate out one of my hens from the flock because the rooster got very aggressive when mating and broke her head feathers off. She was bleeding and then everyone was attacking her.
The rooster has been separated from the hens and thankfully after about a week of rest and treatment Olivia was able to return to the flock.
Roo my rooster will be going to freezer camp just as soon as my 3 new rooster chicks get a bit bigger.
I picked breeds that are very docile, much quieter and hopefully won’t be aggressive when mating.
I am constantly saving containers and jars from whatever I buy to reuse for storage. Years ago a friend of my husband’s got my a bunch of 5 gallon buckets with lids that I use for bulk grain storage.

Good practice to roast/bake as much as possible while it's on. That is where meal planning is useful - if you know what you need to cook then all can be cooked at the same time and then frozen for later use or just reheated the next day. I generally make things altogether that can be frozen easily, since it's just me and my dad. I also save jars and bottles of things I have purchased for storage - also spray bottles for reuse. These things are not new to anyone though. I can't think of anything I do that is unique and useful.
