So sorry to hear of chickens passing. Chickens often hide their illness as instinct tells them that showing weakness equals being picked off by a predator. So chickens and rabbits are good at hiding it. You gave her a great life!
I’m sorry to hear of Eggsmarelda’s passing. I know you gave her a wonderful home and life and I’m sure she appreciated everything you did for her. I know how hard it is when you lose a pet, especially one you are close with. Good idea using the camping stove instead of your main stove to save some money.
As someone who has two cats, three dogs and 20 chickens, I completely understand why you have pets as part of your frugal lifestyle. My pets are soul-nourishment, therefore, they are necessary. Sadly, commercial hens are bred to have very short lives, so Eggsmerelda may have died mainly due to old age (in addition to her other symptoms). Our heritage breeds often live more than twice as long (makes sense…they lay a lot less). Lovely to see you posting more frequently. I love you and the content you make xx
You gave Esmeralda 2 years of love and a great life she would never have experienced otherwise. Sorry about your loss, I too am a chicken lover, such funny characters.
How brilliant you finally found your blocking mats, and the first aid kits are a great idea. I would add a few safety pins in your car one - not for specifically injury related instances, but I know a few times we have been out and a safety pin would have been really useful. I cannot wait to see an update of your crafting when you can, and how you have got on with your loft declutter and renovation.
You brighten my day with your encouragement. I am in Minnesota, US and really enjoy my European RUclipsrs that I follow! I also use the kids Foam Mats for quilting. Mats for Blocking my knitting.
I do think that’s key - to deal as best we can with the economic crisis, the rises in food prices, fuel costs, and just about everything else, but also to continue living a life as you do so. Anyone could choose to live solely eating beans, wearing three jumpers, hat and gloves indoors, trying not to spend any money and never do anything outside the home, but I’m sure you really wouldn’t enjoy such a life very much. We’re here for such a short time, we need to find the happy medium for our own circumstances in order to make life worthwhile.
I'm sorry you loss your sweet hen Esmerelda. Loved the picture at the end of you and Esmerelda and you petting her. She was a very pretty color. 😢 It was a great idea to use the children's blocks for blocking your knitted items. Using your portable camper stove to save costs is a great idea. Energy usage is just too high these days. Growing your own kale will be fun as well as saving money. Thanks for the lovely video.
I'm sorry to hear of Eggsmeraldas passing. Our animals quickly become our family and their passing can be quite hard on us. 😢 The foam children's blocks were a great acquisition !!
So sorry to hear of your precious feather-baby's passing...our pets can be like our children, so they leave a painful void after they've gone. I pray for your comfort and cheer in the days to come...she was such a pretty bird, and lived her best life in your care. And your idea to use those foam blocks for sweaters was genius! Here in the States, they sell those for $1.25 at the Dollar Tree...perhaps you might have something like that in your pound stores? Good to see you, friend...hugs xo, Pam
Dear Tess, So very happy to find your video. Such good tips about your gardening. I am so very sorry about your losing your wonderful chicken. That was very sad indeed. I like you and your family love animals very much. She will be happy and running in chicken heaven with all the other animals that have passed away. Please may I ask? Have you spoken or seen our dear Frugal Jo.? I can't seem to find her on my RUclips but maybe it's just my phone which does act up once in a while. Please if you have any contact with her could you please give her our love and tell her we think of her often.Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Again, so great to see you. .you look so healthy and happy. Sincerely, With love from Debbie and Dexter-Dog my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua companion living a quiet crafty life in southern California USA. 🙋🐾🧑🦽🙏🌻🐦🐤🎃🐝✝️ Greetings to your husband and wonderful boys too!
Hi Debbie and Dexter-Dog. It was very sad. Bob, our one remaining chicken now has two new friends. ❤️. I do see Jo regularly. She is doing great. I'll tell her you asked after her. I hope you and yours are well and happy xxx
Great idea on the first aid boxes. I would add antihistamine cream and tablets in cases of stings/ allergic reactions and maybe aspirin. Aspirin is advised by ambulance call staff in case of chest pain ( not meaning to scare you) I also keep Lavender and Teatree oil as antiseptic, anti fungal and antiviral x
I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your chicken, but what a lovely thing that you were able to give her some extra years of living, being loved and looked after 🧡
Sorry for your loss. I know it is hard when they pass especially when you have rescued them and watched them thrive once put of the cages. I have a few rescue hems and love their company.
your videos introduced olio to me for the first time, and I'm so glad I watched them! it's been a great way for me to save some money as well as make sure my old belongings go to a good home :)
I’m so sorry about Esmerelda. I remember what a beauty she was. Chickens are so smart; I’m glad her friends could see her. She had a good life with your family. 💜
Hi Tess, just wanted to let you know that using camping gas is massively expensive compared to mains gas - I told Frugal Lizzy Bee the same thing. It works out at a whopping £1 per kWh (based on 4 canisters costing £5). I suppose if you aren’t going to use the gas for anything else or replace them, then you may as well use it but otherwise you would be better off using your main hob!
Hi Jenny, As I just paid £5 for the stove and 4 cannisters of gas, I'm happy that it's cheaper than that in this instance. I mainly see it as a back up supply, but if I can buy the cannisters very cheaply at car boot sales I will 😊
Agree about maximising quality of life. My current energy saving obsession is having a lid on a pot at all times. I have a couple of silicone lids hanging by the hob so they are handy.
So sorry to hear about your chicken Tess. I use the kids playmats for blocking too, didn’t get them free but I thought perhaps a yoga mat could work too 🤔
I'm sorry to hear you've lost a well loved hen. I, too, have rescued hens. I had 4 who came to stay with us in May '22. I lost 1 too sadly, but the other three are beautiful 😍and lay eggs regularly. Like you, it's probably cheaper atm to buy eggs. However, the big plus is I know they are truly happy hens. I don't mean to be rude, but can I suggest you put a lid on your pan when boiling water. It will be quicker, and you will save on gas. Also, pour any extra into a flask for later. I, too, picked up colourful floor tiles recently like yours. I use mine on the stone floor of my pantry. Insulation for my feet and a bit of fun.❤ Thank you. X
Re the first aid boxes, I would add nail clippers ( mine migrate to wherever the multiple pairs of tweezers are😂) and also something for insect bites, I use something called Afterbite which I bought in Tesco's many moons ago and it is brilliant on wasp stings.
So sorry you lost one of your hens. I lost 2 in the last few months. They were both older ladies called Sarah and Percy. Yes Percy the hen. Named by my neice. She laid beautiful speckled eggs. We miss them too.
For your first aid kit I would include tape, tongue depressors and small piece of card board for splinting. Also you could make a sling out of an old piece of fabric. Also sudafed OTC and calamine lotion.
I am so sorry about your hen. It is hard when one dies but you gave her a good life. Pets/animals are expensive but you worked hard to be a good steward of your money. They do give much pleasure. I buy eggs from a co- worker who has hens. They are more $$$ than the grocery store but are better I think. People don't realize how expensive chicken feed is plus building a chicken house for them. Then there is the birds flu in the states plus predators get into the coops sometimes. I remember this from my grandparents' farm. You are frugal. To me cheap has a while different meaning than frugal. I do enjoy your channel. From NC in the USA
So sorry for your loss but think of the good life you gave her. How is your canner account going? Able to save much? Hope you will be able to get it soon. Keep on keeping on!!!
Hi Tess, sorry to hear about you chicken’s passing. You gave her a lovely life❤️ I find it handy to have a triangular bandage in the first aid kit in the car. I love your camping kettle!!!! Thank you for your lovely video🥰 Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Nice to see you back posting videos again. I’m sorry above your little chicken. ❤ I do have a question tho. Can you please do an update on your cat head scarf you were knitting before Christmas? It was really adorable!!!
I think I have a family of Borrowers in my home. I can't find my tweezers either. They are probably using them for cooking tongs lol. I use the larger foam pads too, because those blocking kits are crazy expensive here too. I wish we had Olio going here in Windsor, I think it is in Toronto. Sorry about Esmerelda...thankfully she had a couple of lovely years having your family as her home.
I'm so sorry u lost your chicken, I had a rooster showed up at my house one day n just made his self at home he was a real character. He became best friends with one of my cats n was fun to watch them interact. He had so much personality, he passed 2 yrs ago, he was here for 10 yrs, I sure do miss him
Nothing to do with first aid kits but I always have a high vis jacket in my car, bottle of oil and a 2 litre bottle of water just in case oil and coolant lights come on when I'm out and about.
Dear Tess, I’m so sorry about your chicken. Wonderful of you to rescue her as you did. We lost out 16 year old cat last Friday. That was and is so very hard. He (Tommy) had a remarkable personality-a cat who thought he was a dog! No, just a very, personable, cat. .
Hi Tess, it’s always lovely to see you. I thought I would throw in my two cents. From watching way too much RUclips I have come to realize that having a tourniquet in your car first aid might unfortunately become handy. Hope it helps.
I detest the word cheap when applied to a frugal choice. Using that word to describe a lot of manufactured goods is where it belongs to my mind. i prefer to be thought of as a wise steward of our resources. Sorry for the loss of your pretty Esmerelda...Susan
Sorry to hear about your chicken. For the car first aid kit, you might want to consider foil blankets - if you have an accident and someone is in shock, they are very useful. Also, if its cold and you end up stranded somewhere.
So sorry to hear your sad news. Our pets give us so much pleasure and I know we would not be without our cats. May I suggest you put some disposable gloves in case you have to give first aid to someone bleeding when you are out and about. If you are talking about camping walking etc.water sterilising tablets may be useful; and finally maybe some sterile cotton wool and tape of different widths for strapping fingers etc.
I forgot to say that I also pop in an instant ice pack into my first aid kit that accompanies any outing plus some piriton liquid (antihistamine liquid that's suitable for children & adults), can give you extra precious time if someone is having an unexpected allergic reaction as recommended by the pediatric nurse that taught the baby & toddler first aid class I took ages ago.
Sorry about Esmeralda. 😢 Regarding the first aid kits: Do you have dollar stores? I would add small tubes of antibiotic ointment, cortisone cream, and maybe some diphenhydramine tablets, and Imodium tablets.
So sorry you lost your little lady. We used to keep hens until Mt Fox wanted dinner one Christmas day, very sad Xmas that was. So glad she had a couple of happy years with you Thank you for another great video..
So sorry to hear of chickens passing. Chickens often hide their illness as instinct tells them that showing weakness equals being picked off by a predator. So chickens and rabbits are good at hiding it. You gave her a great life!
I have always kept at least one thick sanitary pad in the car. Makes a great compression bandage if needed.
Great idea!
I’m sorry to hear of Eggsmarelda’s passing. I know you gave her a wonderful home and life and I’m sure she appreciated everything you did for her. I know how hard it is when you lose a pet, especially one you are close with.

We boil the water then put it in a flask so we can have our extra cups of tea without boiling the jug again. ✔️
I feel like I've spent tha afternoon with a treasured friend..thanks for your company Tess.. keep well luv .💐x
That's lovely of you Jan. I'm so glad you're here. X

Oh Tess, I am so sorry. We love and cherish our pets too, I understand how difficult it is to lose one. Lots of love. ❤

Your camp stove is beautiful.. I have one and I use it ALL the time instead of my electric stove.♥
So sorry to hear about your pet passing
Those boxes for first aid look fab, ours have come in very handy (especially the tick remover!).
Very sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear about eggsmararlda she was obviously very loved xx
A sad one today for sure Tess, sending lots of lovexxxx
It's sad but sometimes we lose pets and we don't really know what was wrong with them. I believe you did what you could for her
Sorry to hear about your chicken. For the car first aid kit, you might want to consider foil blankets - if you have an accident and someone is in shock, they are very useful. Also, if its cold and you end up stranded somewhere.

i know you dont go on holidays but you used to team up with frugal jo for days out....any chance of that happening again....
Absolutely agree, but I think Frugal Jo moved a bit further away with the house they bought. I really enjoyed Tess and Jo together.
Maybe so :-)
@@Tess-FrugalLiving typical just saw frugal jo's latest video
Any antiseptic cream or wash in there, 🤔 love your channel 😊
Hi
Sorry about Esmeralda. 😢
Regarding the first aid kits:
Do you have dollar stores? I would add small tubes of antibiotic ointment, cortisone cream, and maybe some diphenhydramine tablets, and Imodium tablets.
Good ideas! Thank you 😊
You are missed
Tess have you discontinued your YT channel now...hope not? X
I'm still here. 🙂. I've just posted a community post with an update. X
you cannot afford any extras nor can I
Did she have “bird flu”?
No. We've kept the birds undercover all winter and the other two were fine.
Sorry for the loss of your chicken /pet .
So sorry for your loss. She had the best time with you all. Sending hugs 🐓💔 xx
So sorry you lost your little lady. We used to keep hens until Mt Fox wanted dinner one Christmas day, very sad Xmas that was. So glad she had a couple of happy years with you Thank you for another great video..
