  • First I want to say I absolutely LOVE this EGO 56V Cordless Self-Propelled Mower Model LM2100SP. I've had it since June of 2017 and it has worked flawlessly. So this week when I went to mow the lawn and mulch leaves, I was really surprised when it did not start. However, after examining and troubleshooting I found the problem and wanted to share how I fixed it with you.
Please note that EGO mowers have a limited 3 and 5-year warranty and you should check with the manufacturer to see if you are covered by this warranty.
The "jumper wire" in this video is a 16 or 18 gauge "Primary wire" which is commonly used in automotive and general electrical applications. It has a single copper conductor (vs stranded) and is wrapped in PVC insulation. You can purchase a short length (off the spool) from any good hardware store for a couple dollars.
Home Depot does not show this model available any longer but here is a link at Low's:
    www.lowes.com/...
    Amazon
    www.amazon.com...
SAFETY NOTE: Please be sure to remove the battery when working on your mower and keep hands and feet away from the blade at all times.
Please give me a thumbs up AND subscribe to my channel if you enjoyed this video!
If you feel so inclined, you can make a small donation ($2, $5, $10) to the Mi-Tinker channel which will help us continue making future videos: www.paypal.com...
    Enjoy!

I imagine lots of folks will say it is a bad idea to bypass a safety feature, but frankly this particular one is bad design, not to mention somewhat redundant. I think your solution will solve the exact problem I am having with my EGO mower, and probably many others as well. Thanks for the video.

Yep a lot of safety features on this machine I don’t mind bypassing one of them. The jump wire has been working for 2 years now. I avoid folding the handle now as a rule to prevent any new problems with the wire harness. Thanks for watching and I hope this fixes yours!

My mower is back up and running thanks to your excellent video!!! I was able to diagnose the issue using the jumper-wire. However, I inspected the wiring for breaks, but all looked good. I was then able to determine the pins in the connector weren’t making full contact. After lightly bending the pins down in the male end of the connector, I was able to stop and restart my motor consistently. I wouldn’t have gotten to this level of troubleshooting had it not been for your video.

I was in the process and found your video helpful as I didn't know what wires to jump out the switch. I cut the plug on the bar side about 4 inches up, soldered the wires, and then used heat shrink on the wires. Removed the switch and 1 less thing to worry about going forward. Works like a champ, thanks for your video as it gave me the sought after information I needed!😊

4:26 awesome video and the solution worked like a charm ! My Ego is an LM2100/2102SP purchased March 2017 and also worked flawlessly until now. One thing that would be helpful is to add that the wire for the jumper should be solid (not stranded) 18 AWG. Same wire used on doorbells.

Mine had the same problem, I just replaced the wires from the pivot point to the connector and it fixed the issue and still has the safety feature, The big clicking relay that is visible is the relay for the drive wheels only, so when the handle is folded the drive wheels won't engage. Thank you! You showed me how to repair my (mostly well designed) Ego mower. I watched 4 other helpful RUclips videos before yours. Your video is efficiently edited and worded. Ego sent me an email that allows me to bring the mower to their (only) warranty repair shop in Georgia - an hour drive away. A two-hour round trip to bring the mower there and then a two-hour trip to bring it back weeks later. With the possibility a technician may return the mower with new problems. My lowest risk solution was to repair my mower as you explained. Thank you for your excellent, efficient work.

Fixed mine in less than 15 minutes thanks to your video. Thank you!
I want to add that when I thought my mower may need warranty repair (mine is same as your model that I purchased in 2018) I went online and saw endless reviews about how horrible (worse than horrible) the EGO customer service has been this past 18 months. We all understand that times have been tough, but from what I read, if I wasn't able to fix this myself, I was going to go with a different brand for replacement.

Thank you for sharing your fix. My 3 yo Ego started this exact same problem about a week ago. I'll be using your suggestion to get mine up and running again. Like you, I figured out the problem was in the handle extension and I was dreading digging into that joint to try to repair or replace the micro switch. Your jumper bypass is way easier. Other than the switch in the handle wearing out, my Ego is a great mower. In 3 yrs of a lot of use and this is my only problem, Ill take it. Had gas mowers that were a PITA within the first year.

    • @mi-tinker

Hi John, I do like my EGO mower indeed. It is Quiet and, except for this issue, started every time, which I can not say about any gas mower I've owned over the years. I'm happy not to be yanking on the cord, wearing ear protection, and changing oil!
The jumper fix is still working great this summer. We are now storing the mower (while not in use) with the handle in the mowing position (not folded) to prolong the wire harness life. I'm hoping to get many more years out of the mower. Hope you do too!

Thank you for this video. I have the same mower. It failed to start April 2021. I took off the protective case to look at the electronics and was completely lost. I took it to Home Depot. They shipped it off and called me 2 weeks later saying it’ll be $400 to fix and my warranty was voided because I removed the protective case. I found your video and told them to not repair, but send it back. They lost some of my mower (protective case and screws). It’s been a complete hassle dealing with Home Depot but finally got my mower back, 8 weeks later (still waiting for my case and screws- they’re gonna call me when they find them). But you’re technique worked! It started right up. I felt obligated to thank you!

Hey, just found your video after my mower died when I adjusted the handle height. The steps you provided were very helpful. I ended up finding a broken wire where the wire bundles turn at the bottom of the handle. The wire was barely kinked externally and there was no damage to the insulation, just broken inside. No one repairs these things so it saved me a lot of money. Thank you!

This procedure worked perfectly for us. Thank you so much! I love the mower but agree with Thomas Kelly that it is over-engineered a bit. A great solution to a puzzling problem. The only caution is that when we do things like this we may void any warranty. Also, remember to make certain the big relay underneath the housing is in place. When we first tested the bridge we forgot, so the mower wouldn't start. Rookie mistake on our part. You saved us $$!

I had the same problem. I was trying to figure out how to bypass this wire. I have been twisting the wire in different positions to get the lawn mower to work. Thanks for the vid. I should of figured this out myself but hey.... I think this is a common issue because my wire was kinked exactly how yours was. Over time of folding and unfolding the mower the wire breaks and shorts. I was about to buy a whole new wire harnes for $120.

Thanks, MI Tinker. I Just used mine for the 1st time since 2018. It's been in the shed in It's folded position. Battery Inside home, proper conditions & charged to 50%, 60%, 50% just to maintain balance. So today I go out install full battery, power to lights/wheels, but no blade motor. I opened it like you did, and to my surprise. Two connections not only was it disconnected, it was cut. I had to make wire splices, wow, out of the box. I never used it, I took a video of before & after to show EGO warranty department.

I thought my warranty had expired, but when I called Ego, they said I still had a year left and told me where to take it for repair. Didn't cost me anything.

@Larry Richards The problems you face is a break in one of the three wires connected to the speed control pot. These are colored Red, Green and Black. You don’t have to open the handle. The spot where the pinched wires were in the video, that is where the break in these wires happen. So either slice and repair these wires there, or in my case I totally rewired it using CAT5 Ethernet cable. Why Cat5? Because it was the cheapest solution. 6-7 feet cable in Lowes was $3. Replacing each colored wire with a pair of the wires inside CAT5 cable, starting from the speed control pot, and then stringing the cable outside the black covered harness cover ( I used closely spaced zip-ties ). It is a hassle, but not more than buying the very expensive replacement harness. It has worked for more than a year, since Ethernet cables are well protected and flexible.
      @MI-Tinker 👍 nice video.

Thanks for watching and subscribing! I’m sorry you are having problems with your mower, I can’t think of why there would be an oil leak on this mower. Being battery operated, it should not have any type of oil tank that I know of. Maybe put a piece of clean cardboard under it after use, and check the cardboard for the leak the next day. You may be able to better locate the problem based on where the leak is on the cardboard in relation to the mower. Maybe even post a photo of what you find (location of the leak and type of fluid oil or other) Good luck!

Hi Tacoma, thanks for the post. I did cut the harness near the hinge and could not see an obvious break… so it may have been up have been higher in the wire harness (near the slide extension) which means chasing it up the handle and more tearing apart… so i made a risk reward decision with the jumper wire fix vs going deeper into the rabbit hole. The mower was already out of warranty so I had nothing to lose by taking a half-day and seeing if I could fix it. Im happy to say the mower and the fix are still going strong 2 mowing seasons later.
