This was very, very helpful for a not-very-handy 67-year-old who is tired of paying repair people. I got through about 11 minutes and I was able to resolve my problem with the mower not working. I hope to remember to return to this, if I have trouble again.

Wow! I can't thank you enough! As another 67 year old, I came so close to loading my mower up and bringing it to the repair shop. I was doing my last mow of the season and my mower just stopped. I checked the battery, took my air compressor and blew it all off (not sure if that did anything, but ???) I even called 2 repair shops. Then I remembered how helpful RUclips is and low and behold your video showed up. It was the HANDLES! I unlocked them and slid them up and down a bit, then locked back into place and WOLLLAAAA!!! It worked. Finished up my yard, cleaned it all up and going to the garden shed until next spring. Again, THANK you for doing this video!

I was pulling my mower backwards and the handle hit my neighbor's retaining wall and it shut off. I just pulled the handle back out all the way. Voila, it worked.

Fantastic! What a time saver in troubleshooting my mower. I put it away running, three weeks later (California) go to mow and nothing! I went straight to the wires in that folding handle elbow and sure enough, in the smaller wiring harness I found the red wire almost cut in half. The insulation around the three wires is shrunk to fit and difficult to strip back so be careful not to damage the other wires. I made the repair and tried to route the wires in a more non-abrasive manner, even coating the area with silicon past to reduce the folding friction. I took some photos, but guess you can't add them in the comments. Thanks so much for the video.

Thank you so much! Mower died. Couldn’t find anyone to fix it. (Buy a new mower, they said). Lawn turning into a hay field. Oh, what to do? And then I found you. I bypassed the relay (under the hood) and, Eureka! the mower lives again. Only mystery is the spring and small plastic part that fell out when I took off the cover on the side rail to check that relay. (I couldn’t figure out how to fit them back in). Sure wish I knew what they did but, oh well, the mower runs just fine without them. So, thank you again. You’ve made me one happy, empowered 76-year-old lady.

I've had my mower for 5 years now. Last time I started it, it started with no problem and I took a few steps and then it stopped. I started it again, took a few steps, and it stopped again. Then it wouldn't start at all. I made sure the battery was seated correctly, that didn't help. The light on top the battery was green. But since I couldn't figure out what was wrong I put it on the charger . It went thru the charging, I took it and put it back in the mower, it didn't start. This time I noticed that the yellow light on the mower would blink and then shut off. I just wanted to say that I was so close to paying out 300 bucks for a new battery before I watched your video. In your video when you did the part about the handle , it made me remember that a couple years ago my mower wouldn't start and it was because the handle clip was not on tight on one side. So I just went back outside and sure enough one side wasn't clipped on tight. I fixed that and mowed my lawn.
So sometimes it's the simplest things that can be causing the problem. And your video helped me get mowing again. Thank you !

Thanks so much. While close ups would have been helpful, I'm thrilled that after following your first couple steps my lawn mower was running again. I've told my kids not to store it with the handle folded over anymore as well because I don't want the cords in the lower arm area to fray as u described. That's a great tip to prolong the Longevity of the mower wires. I'd gone to a repair shop this morning to find they only repair gas. Thays when I searched for a troubleshooting vid. U saved the day. THANKS AGAIN.

I panicked this afternoon when the mower wouldn't start. I knew the battery was fine. Luckily I found this video right away and was reminded if the handle isn't fully extended the power won't flow. Sure enough, I had forgotten to secure one side of the middle of the handle and it started right up. Excellent video - many thanks!

Thank you for your video. A close-up view of how you were doing the repairs would have been very helpful. Looks to me like pinched wires are a design flaw, as it happens when the mower is folded for storage. This issue will be costly to fix after the warranty runs out unless the mower is stored without folding the handles, which defeats the purpose of buying a "compact mower" to save on space!

I do think that if he is going to be barefoot while demonstrating with a mower blade rotating that he should at least have a comment "shoes recommended while working around rotating blades" or something about safety! haha!

  • @jamescameron8612
    @jamescameron8612 8 месяцев назад

I had the problem of the blade not starting to spin (self propelled always worked no matter what). Finally, I tried releasing the clips on the handle, pushing it all the way down into the portion of the handle attached to the mower, then pulled it all the way back out and locked it. Doing this fixed the problem and it starts every single time (when you do those steps each time). I'm going to guess that Ego thinks everyone is going to fold up and hang their lawnmower on the wall. I have no interest in that and simply roll it in and store it like I did my gas mower. I will say this stupid problem and an extremely expensive lawnmower was a huge disappointment, but thankfully the solution was as stupid as the problem they created. This is why I'm hesitant to buy much of anything anymore. No matter how much you pay for it (never buy the cheapest stuff, always at least mid level prices) the products produced now never seem to NOT disappoint! I hope this helps some of you.

Cool. So I just have to utilize my electrical engineering degree to fix poorly designed, easily anticipated electrical wiring problems with my Ego mower. I’m not saying these kinds of mowers need to be perfect, but it’s a little annoying when something like this ‘breaks’ when it could have been easily avoided if it was designed a little better. Great job, Ego.

I have a newer EGO mower (2135SP). The mower blades would randomly stop while using the mower. It seemed that the slightest movement of the handle would cause the safety switch to stop the blades. In most cases, I could restart the mower by pulling up on the handle and starting the mower normally. Finally, I became annoyed with having to do this.
With the newer models, the configuration of the safety switch is different. There is no spring. I opened the plastic components on the handle which houses the safety switch. There are several TORX screws holding the components together, so an appropriately sized TORX screwdriver is needed. The switch is configured as a Normally Closed (NC) switch. When the handle is not in the fully up position, the switch opens, and the blades stop. I first thought of removing the switch and permanently connecting the two wires together. I then opted for another solution in case I wanted to easily remove my modification.
The switch has an unused Normally Open (NO) terminal. I used a small piece of wire to connect the NC and the NO terminals together. This basically causes the switch to have no function. I reassembled the mower and now everything works great without interruptions. Of course this removes one of the safety components of the mower. Be aware that the handle will not have to be fully extended to start the blades.
I enjoy all the EGO mower videos on RUclips. I only wish more videos for the newer models were available.

Thanks for the pointers, very helpful. To others coming across this video I want to say this mower is no way worth the money. Besides this problem I've had to buy a second battery after only using the first battery for one season. Besides not lasting for my 15000 sq foot lawn it also stops pushing the grass into the bag well before it actually stops so you end up with droppings on the lawn. This means you have to switch out the battery even before it actually is out of charge. I'm sorry I bought this mower and would not recommend it to anyone. Assuming it makes it through the summer, I'm done with EGO and will sadly go back to a gas mower next year.

Well, it could be worth the price for some folks. Just to offer a contrasting experience: I have used my ego 21” mower for 7 seasons now, I’m still on the original battery, and have not needed to make any repairs or replacements. My lawn is only about half the size of yours, and I cut it all on a single charge.

Sorry you had a bad experience with the battery. A friend told me to store my battery in a cool place (the air conditioned house) rather than in the garage which seems to help with battery life. And to bring it into the house in really cold weather (winter) so that the battery doesn't experience temperature extremes

    • @CrazyLinguiniLegs

@@BuckeyeNutUG yep, after the last fall mow I charge the battery and bring it into the house until next spring.

I will have to disagree with this. Your battery is under warranty for longer than a year, for one thing. In my opinion it's nice to have two batteries though.
I use the grass catcher every time and when it gets close to full, you have to empty it or it will act like a mulcher instead.
My mower cuts the lawn as well as a gas mower and I haven't had to do any maintenance.
I've had my Ego mower for 8 years and my 5ah battery stopped working as well in year 5. I bought an Ego 16" chainsaw with a 5ah battery, 3 years ago and use that newer battery in my mower instead. It is an upgraded battery over my original, but the og battery still works as a back up to finish my lawn, while I put the other one on the charger.
I have used the newer battery for 3 years and it still works really well. I've been keeping my batteries in my garage or shed, which do get hot and cold but are dry (but humid in summer) and shaded.
I know batteries are expensive, so I would recommend getting one with another tool, like a blower or a chainsaw.

edit July 5: I disassembled my 2130SP (brushless mower) today and confirmed what I wrote below. There are NO relays in either the 2100 (in this video) or my model, the 2130. There are only lever operated micro-switches (more like mini), one used in the telescoping handle, and one in the upper handle (pushbutton and swing bar) and one used in the power body attached to the lower handle such that when the handle is stowed in the full forward position it engages preventing the mower from starting accidentally. So there's 3 total switches used and no relays. All are used for purposes of implementing "safety" interlock modes.
    July 3:
Umm, good video, however what you term "relays" are actually called "interlock switches" or simply interlocks in short form. I am an EE and we use interlocks in electrical engineering for numerous things. I have not taken mine apart yet but am looking at various videos to lessen the hassle but these minor things caught my attention.

Interesting video. Are those relays or switches? There is not much difference. A switch makes a connection when it's pressed (2 or 3 wires). A relay makes a connection when an electrical voltage is supplied (usually 4 or more wires). Both physically move a connector, but the relay typically uses a coil to create a magnet, and that magnet moves the internal connector.

It was working fine - last used a couple of weeks ago. The battery is fully charged but the blade motor does not operate this morning. The battery and the mower green lights show on, but the motor fails to spin. However the machine drives forward as normal. I have tried it several times, checking the handles are fully extended etc. Where should I look next? As I say, it’s only the blade motor that’s failing to work and I wonder if that suggests where I need to look first. The blade spins very freely when rotated by hand.

What type of screws did you remove to take off the cover (hex or phillips)? Does it require a specific tool/bit/extension?

Can you please answer a question for me? I am getting 27 volts on the main start relay at the top of the handle, should all 56 volts be going thru the relay? I know the battery is good and can't find a wiring diagram online anywhere.

That relay or wires must be the problem. THANKS

My mower won't start. Just hear a "clicking" sound from the motor area. Hope it's not that relay. This looks like more trouble than it is worth. Only had this mower 1 year. I will try and check the circuitry and hope I can find what is wrong. Yesterday it worked fine!!! Today nada. I have folded this mower up at most 3 times. Can't believe that the wires are bad.

5 years seems to be the sweet spot for this issue. Safety features are dumb. I used power grips to fix the dumb to by pass the kill switch. They should have just used a wire cable to pull a lever like gas mowers.

well, having my second problem. It went to Ace Hardware at the end of last season, and now, fully charged battery and it won't start AGAIN. Frustrated AF. When it was repaired, I was told it had something to do with folding the handle down over and over. Guess what, it's designed to do that for easy storage !!!!! Back to Ace Hardware. Hopefully the warranty covers it again. WTF

Hopefully it works out for you. I stopped folding mine unless I’m storing it for the winter. My new wires should hold up better, but it’s definitely a design flaw.

Why do you have to mow twice because of an electric mower? Does it cause your grass to grow quicker?

    • @jasonmelancon8096
      @jasonmelancon8096 8 месяцев назад +2

I think it’s because they don’t cut as low a conventional gas mower. My wife has a Kobalt and it don’t cut low enough with the deck all the way down. I personally think this is how they get the battery to last on a charge because if you cut the same high as I do with my gas mower the electric motor would be in more of a bind. I have been a small engine mechanic for 40 years and my personal thoughts are they are tinker toys. I own one because it’s easy for my wife to operate no gas or oil. But after 2 days it don’t look like she cut at all. Just my 2 cents
