Ryobi 40v Lawn Mower Won't Start - What to Check and Why
More about nothing...
How I fixed my issue with the Ryobi cordless mower. My mower would turn on, but randomly shut off once I made a turn or sudden movement. My model does not have the red safety button which many others have been troubleshooting. After about a month and a half of applying the fix, I have not had any issues. I hope this helps. Ryobi lawnmower shuts off fix. Stuck with a brand new lawn mower that won't start. I show how to fix intermittent shutting off issue with Ryobi 40v cordless lawnmower. I just used a T30 torx bit and tightened both handle's at the base. The screws become loose and prevent the handle bar from pushing in on/off safety switch. If none of this fixes your issue, you may have what we had last year where mice got in the mower and chewed up the wires. See this video: ruclips.net/video/HDv25ezD0SA/видео.html I hope you find the fix. Take Care. Please like and subscribe! 👍 Also, if you need new batteries, check out these: amzn.to/3goZ5Ii
I doubt the mice case as it was stopped suddenly while using it, no way mice inter during working, but may be some of the grass cause damage to a wire, I will see the video hope it will work
thanks so much

Mice battery does not charge
Same! Gotta love RUclips! And practical tips and guidance! Thank you!
@@robinjaffin3418 Thank you. Glad it was helpful.
I had the same issue and I tighten all the screws and I had to put the bag on and it works great. never seen so many safety switches. thanks.
One of many coming back to this video to say my handle wasn't fully extended. You're a legend, thanks for the video!
Haha, thank you. I still have to do it on mine sometimes.
Mine too, lol.
Thank you so much for making this video! I had the handles fully extended but one of the locks had come loose so all I had to do was turn it a smidgen and it worked! Thanks again.
Glad I could help! These things want it their way or nothing.
Thank god you posted this! We are so grateful. We couldn’t start the mower and the handle wasn’t pulled out. We had it stored and didn’t know it wouldn’t run without it being locked down and handle our fully! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful. Thank you.
Handles had come loose and were not fully extended. You saved me! Thank you so much?
From a grateful single woman who gets by on RUclips videos.
I am glad it was a simple fix. Thank you. RUclips helps me too.
Thank you very much for this video! I have the exact same lawnmower as in the video. I've had it for about 3 years now and just had to buy a new battery for it. Couldn't figure out why it didn't want to run. One of my safety switches wasn't locked. You da man!😊
Glad it helped! They are easy to overlook and there are so many of them. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, I was ready to put this lawnmower out on the curb and hope that someone would come by and take it but because of your video I was able to turn one of the clamps and got it back to life this afternoon❤
Glad it helped
Thanks, we have a different model, but your tips helped. Holding down the start button for a few seconds, and then pulling the black bar back seemed to do the trick!
Awesome, glad it helped.
Pulling the handle up fixed the issue. It has been 'dead' for over a year so big THANK YOU!!!
So glad that fixed it. Those safety features make the product so frustrating.
Thank you thank you. Haven’t had it a year and it kept turning off today. Battery was charged. Came in the house and went on you tube, and watched your video. One handle clip was moved.......whew, was an easy fix. A big hug!
Awesome. Glad it was not a big issue.
Thank you so much for fixing my mower! I have tried everything, gave it a good clean, and already was going to unscrew everything till I watched your video. And, oh boy, the handles were not fully extended 🤦♀️😂. Thank you so much!🙂
Glad I could help! Thanks for the comment.
If you ran over something and mower stalled and wont start- it is because the Mulch Plug is loose and is not properly installed. Take out mulch plug and reinsert and push down handle all the way into place. This has helped me three times. (Also make sure handles extended all the way and sturdily locked in place.) I love this mower.
Great info to know, thank you. Glad the video helps.
Thanks a bunch. You saved me hassle of packing the stuff back & the trip of returning to home depot. I thought I had be sold a faulty machine when mine won't start. Apparently the tip about the handle being fully extended & the bolts & all was well needed.
Glad I could help! Those safety sensors will get you all the time.
I barely had my mower a year and it wouldn't start. I just checked all the things you mentioned and sure enough, something wasn't locked in. Just started right up. Almost bought a new one today. Thank you!
Glad it helped and it started working. This stuff gets expensive.
Yeah, had mine a couple years, stored it for the winter. Then my wife wanted to use it, and we both forgot to extend the handle. Stupid user tricks.
Thank you so much, I have just immigrated, so I did not have any idea about lawn mowing, your video was so helpful for to understand how to start the mower, I missed to extend the handle, so my mower did not work, but now it is working. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks a bunch for posting this video.
I gave my Mom who lives an hour away my 2y old ryobi 40v mower because she wanted to enjoy gas free & quieter mowing. She called saying she couldnt get the mower to start full battery, key in place, correct start up procedure. I was getting frustrated and dissapointed for my Mom because this mower has always worked flawless
for me. When found your video i called back to make sure she had the handles fully extended and locked. That was it! Started perfectly! Thanks again!
I am so glad this helped your mother. I know the situation you were in.
Really appreciated this video, handle wasn’t extended and locked
New owner was very frustrated
Thanks !!
B
So glad it helped! I can totally understand. It's very easy to overlook some of the tiniest of things to make this mower not start.
Thanks a million! This trick worked for me. I was super happy because I thought that was the end of my mowers life.
Glad you found the issue. Hope it has many more years for you.
i bought an old one from flea market and it was not turning on. but after all the safety features that you mentioned were in place. it started right up. i was ready to take it apart to check what was wrong. but this video saved me all the time of troubleshooting a perfecting good one. thanks for making this video.
I am glad it helped and was something simple.
Dude, you just save my life! My handles weren’t all the way extended! Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thanks.
Dude I swear you just saved me some embarrassment & a trip to home depot on a memorial weekend Sunday LMAO 🤣
THANK YOU!!!! so much.
Glad I could help! I understand the frustration.
Your video solved my issue very painlessly. Sincere thanks for making it.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you - you are the one saved me from having to return this new lawn mower. The handle retracted after only 2 short uses. RYOBI web site is useless. Thank you again.
Glad it helped. They can be tricky.
Good call out about the many safety switches. Has to be perfect or it’s easy to miss the problem causing it to not start.
Yeah, sometimes they go a little crazy on the safety switches. My tractor drives me crazy with all the switches and beepers.
Thank you. Mower been in storage couple years, I forgot proper order of starting sequence. This vid helped me get it right!
Glad it helped!
Dude is a legend thank you for making this. Made my day so much easier!! My started wasn’t fully extended.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful.
Thanks for the video, it was a great tip. My handle was not fully extended, once I extended it, based on your tip, mower works fine. Thank you!
Awesome. Glad to hear it was minor.
You saved us a lot of hassle, thank you!!!
Glad it helped! Hope your mowing season goes well.
Thanks for the help man. Saved me a lot of trouble. Handles weren’t locked and dropped a little when I started mowing,
Glad it helped! Thanks.
Worked for me with my little 18 volt ryobi! Two little knobs on the handle weren’t locked in! Thank you! Thankfully no mice eating the wires!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks.
OMG you save me today my key got out all of a sudden and you helped me fix it in just 2 mins you are amazing ❤❤❤
Glad it was helpful. Thanks.
Thanks so much! I was getting really frustrated, but your tips worked!👍
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching and the kind comment.
Something so simple saved me so much time and headache. God bless you. thanks
Glad it helped. Take Care.
Bro my Ryobi lawn mower wouldn't start up after I just turned it off so I watched your video and pulled the key out and put it back and it started. Thanks for the helpful video
Glad I could help
IT WAS THE DAMN KEY. THE THING I HAVEN'T THOUGHT ABOUT SINCE I BOUGHT MY MOWER YEARS AGO
I feel you. It's always something small and not thought of. Glad that is all it was.
Ditto 😑
Electric mowers like electric car not time for them yet
Your the best!!!! Was the handles for me. I was getting hot and eaten by mosquitos and mad, thank you for the easy fix!
Glad I could help!
Damn Handles..🤣🤣 same here.
Thanks for this brother. This was my problem. I didn’t know they were so sensitive. Thanks again for the help👍
Glad it was helpful. Thanks!
Thank you!! I had turned the mower on its side to remove clumps of soggy grass. The handle extender lock had popped into the open position and I didn't notice! My model is different, but all the safety features appear to be the same. Thanks again!
Glad it helped. Those things are so easy to miss.
I almost took mine to Home Depot before finding this video because of this very situation 😂😂
Thank you for this video. It really helped me to figure it out what was going on with my lawn mower!!!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Very helpful, thanks. Just finished mowing the lawn up here in Alaska.
Nice. Glad it helped. I love Alaska. Can't wait to go back. Take Care.
Got my 2nd mom's lawnmower working. Thanks. Now I seem like a classic man, fixing stuff!! Lol
Awesome. Glad it was helpful. Looking good for the in-laws.
Just ran over a toy dog bone, and it came to a complete stop. Did everything prescribed here. Everything checked out, but still no go. So I took the chute cover off, and found a bit of limb debris within the chute that I cleared out by hand. I put it back in place, and it started up. Another little thing to check out, just in case. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the extra info. It's great you found the issue without too much work.
This saved me! I was mowing and one of the kids lacrosse balls was hiding in the tall grass and nothing I tried would get it to start. Tried everything in this video and from otherbhelp sites and still no luck. Following this comment I took off the chute and there was some dirt and debris but I think taking it off and back on reset the sensor. Worked just fine after that.
@@MatthewNelson104 I did the same, also. I removed debris from the chute, and the mower started up. Awesome. Thank you so much.
1:33 saved me. The handle wasn't extended all the way. Thank you very much.
Glad it helped. Those things are easy to miss.
Thank you! Now it's still my favorite mower.
Glad I could help.
Thanks for your vídeo my father in law was asking me about if I had an idea why his mower wouldn’t turn on and after seeing your video in less than a minute it was running. Thanks
Glad I could help
I eventually suspected it was the extension clasps causing the continuous shut down only a few seconds after start up . Thanks for confirming this. Now I know to also check the spring loaded handle locking pins if there are future problems.
Glad I could help!
Yayyyy! Just "fixed"mothers lawnmower! handle wasn't fully extended... A bunch of other people had looked at it for her already so I told her she needed a real man to do it🤣🤣🤣🤣thanks guy u cool
Glad you took care of that for mom!
Thank you....thank you....thank you! Those handle pins were my problem. Since I've only used this sucker two other times, I just assumed I brought a lemon! Thank you [again] for the tips!!
I am very glad it was helpful. Those still get me sometimes.
Thanks for your time to put this video together
Glad it was helpful. Thanks.
Thanks. I had to “fully extend and lock”. It was silly though, because it was going and then stopped. Guess it figured it out and made me then work for it.
Glad it was just that. I hear it's a real pain when the safety switches go out.
Thanks so much for this video. Of course I looked down and saw a big notice on the mower that said it would not work without the handlebars being fully extended. But I thought they were. Turns out they had slipped down so I pulled them back out and they clicked into place and IT WORKS! A handlebar clamp came undone. That should have alerted me. Next time I’ll know. Love my mower especially during fall for mulching leaves (fewer to rake!)
Glad it was simple. Happens all the time.
Thank you! These steps should be obvious, but I didn't even think about doing them one by one. I hit a tree trunk, and the handle was not "fully etended" any more, pulled it back and the mower is working again! Thank you!
Glad it helped. Little things like that happen to me a lot on mine. Those switches are all over the place.
I have a different brand mower but it seems they all work the same. You helped me a lot. Thanks.
Glad it helped. Thanks for checking out the video.
Thanks for info. My handle wasn't locked down and kept mine off. Easy fix.
Glad it was something simple.
Thank you! All of my safeties and the key were good, but I was pulling back the thing (lever?) before pushing the button, instead of after.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much! You saved me from a headache 😊
Glad it helped! You are very welcome.
I folded one I bought off market place .. watching this at the restaurant - going home to see if this is why it won’t start … ty for this !! Fingers crossed
Hope that is all it is.
I used my blower after I tryed everything you said to try! And blew out any old grass and stuff in any crevices in the arms etx and it started! Thanks
Awesome idea. Any little thing can make these stop. Glad you found the issue.
Thank you so much. You solved my issue.
Wonderful.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the video, I made my works because of your video. Thanks
Awesome. Glad you got it fixed.
Thanks for posting this! I needed a reminder about the starter key (which had come loose on mine)!
Glad it was a simple fix!
This video helped. I had no idea why it wouldn't crank. I unwrapped the latches and pushed my handle in, then pulled the handle back out an snapped the latches back down and it started. Guess it just needed a reset
Reboot!
Thank you for this video.
I have had my ryobi for 3 years now.
No problems. And suddenly it died and won't run. Now I know what to check besides handles extended.
Glad it was helpful.
Thanks brother, locking in the pins all the way did the trick!
Glad it was helpful.
Yes, the handle wasn’t locked on mine and would not start. Thanks for the help!
Glad it was helpful.
Thank you for video. My problem is solved thanks to you! 👊
Glad it helped. 👊
Omg haha thanks. Extended the handles all the way out and that worked.
Glad I could help! Take Care.
I love this video! Our friend mowed our lawn and I thought he lowered the handle. I also thought I had followed your instructions. "Fulled extended"? After watching this video several times, I followed the instructions. Duh!! I also thought it was the battery. I was going to buy another one. Thank you for the easy-to-read ( but not followed) instructions, for the fact that we do NOT need to pay for another battery and that my dogs will now wander into the yard!
Glad it helped!
It worked, thanks for saving the day.
Glad I could help
The freaking HANDLES! Thank you, I didn't even realize they had to click. It's running again!
Glad to hear it was simple.
I just wanted to add to the chorus of all the other people who are saying “thank you”. For me, I was pulling the lever towards the handle and then pressing the button (it’s weird that they have that the reverse way). Thanks so much for the video! Although now my wife says I have to get my butt outside and finish the lawn 😂
I am sure you can teach her how using the video. Make lawn work a family event.
Not too bad! Thanks for the tip about the mice and wires. Another thing with mine, though, is that if the grass bag is full or not attached, mine won't turn on for that reason as well.
I have heard that. Mine does not do that but I guess some models had that. That would be annoying. Thanks for the tip on that.
Thanks! Different model, but same issue. Just needed the handles extended lol
Glad I could help! It's so easy to overlook the little things.
The lawn mower LIVES ! thanks
Glad I could help. Good luck.
Thanks for this video. My key had shaken loose, and once I pushed it back in, the mower starts again.
Glad it helped and glad it was simple.
Thanks dude! Handle wasn’t fuuuly out. Wow.
Glad it helped!
Thank you very much …It does work now after I watched your video
Glad it helped. Thanks.
Thank you so much !!!!!! I just fixed the problem.
You are welcome! Glad you got it fixed.
Thanks. It was the first thing you pointed out, the circuit.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
the grey pull down arm has a tip made of soft plastic, that contacts the switch. after about 100 times actuating the bar, the tip will wear down, and stop contacting properly.
Yeah, sadly over time these things are going to wear out all over the place. I have been lucky with mine, but I don't break it down very often so the parts don't really move much.
Thank you for this. It helped me
Glad it helped!
This was very helpful, Thank you so much!!

Thanks for this video. I have a different model that suddenly stopped working. It was a simple safety feature not fully connected.
Glad it helped. Those safety switches are so safe they don't even let you use it.
@@SeidelRanch Yeah. It was just a simple thing that I overlooked not really being fully familiar with the product.

Thanks sir. This video helped me. I owe you a cup of coffee 😀
Thank you. I am just glad it helped. Take care.
Thank you. It was the Key, I didn't know about it.
No problem. Those get lost and then you wonder what was there. I totally get it.
It was the key! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped.
Thank you for saving me a trip to the dealer! I got it used and don't have a manual.
Glad I could help! I understand the frustration.
There's no dealer anywhere near me. This product is getting way too frustrating; I may just return it (80 mile round trip). I get so tired of buying just about anything and it doesn't work or doesn't deliver its promise. There's no quality control anywhere with any product anymore. I suppose the customer is the quality control department.
@@virginiamoss7045 Sadly I do understand your same issue. I see it all the time. These "made in china" and "build it the cheapest way" processes are making us the testing department.
Thank you so much for this video..I almost going to throw away our mower 😂..this saves me hundreds bucks 👍
So glad you found the issue. These things are cheap.
I see them at thrift stores. I'm going to purchase, fix it up and resell thanks to your info. Too bad those who donated away didn't watch RUclips for answers.
Brother, your 3 year old video helped me. Lol. It wasn't turning on and it was the handle not being all the way out. Lol. Thanks
Glad I could help
Thank you. At 1:42 was my issue, the clips looked like they were in, but not all the way.
Glad it was something simple. Thanks for watching.
Thanks bro! You solved my problem
Glad I could help
Thanks!
Checked the key, battery, bag sensor (replaced mulcher with bagger) and no luck.
The handle does have a tendency to retract but usually it comes unlocked and I just pull it back out and lock it again. But it must have vibrated closed.
Quick fix. Thanks!
Glad it helped. Maybe try a zip tie on the latch if you don't fold it up to store. I know my latches are kind of flimsy, so I can see where this can happen. Thanks for watching!
I was worried thank you ! 😊
You’re welcome! Glad it helped. It seems to be a great mower as long as everything aligns just right.
Thank you, it helped.
Glad it helped

Glad you found it. That one could be tricky.
Thanks! Very helpful!

Thanks... the handle not being FULLY extended was my exact issue.
It happens all the time. I'm glad that is all it was.
