      Also, once the battery is removed before working on the mower, especially in the blade area, try starting up the mower first (without the battery installed) to discharge any energy which may be stored in a capacitor.

    Good video. I've had all my EGO products for about three years now, and I love them all. Use them every week. My tip for cleaning the mower is to just use the EGO leaf blower on it after you're done mowing. It doesn't get every speck of grass off, but the majority of it. Then every so often I take a shop rag and just give it a once over.

    Good video. I personally spray the wheels and topside. I put a plastic bucket on top of the battery compartment and spray but first I blow it out to keep the contacts clean.
    I have neighbors dogs that like to go on my lawn so there’s no question about hosing it down. I always blow off everything first. A blower removes a ton of grass and helps dry out the bottom. I have the SKIL (sister company of EGO) which is very similar. It bogs down a lot less than my gas Honda. It weighs about 39 lbs so I’m glad I didn’t get the self propelled version. It’s like pushing a toy. I have an old plastic bucket I plan on notching on the sides that will fit around the blades so I can spray with water. I now love cutting my yard with no intention of ever going back to gas. Cheers

    THANK YOU! My first battery lawn mower and I couldn’t figure out why the blades weren’t engaging when I was starting and self-propelling it exactly the way the manual told me. I went to RUclips in frustration and found your video. The minute I saw your demonstration I realized I was confusing the bail switch (what I think of as the throttle) with the self-propel triggers and was missing a step in the process. You’re right that the manual could use some work.

    This is the fix for the locking wheel problem (at least for me) I've posted this on other videos so that most people with the locking wheels will have some information:
    Had all the same problems with random locking up of the right rear wheel, and it showed up within months of owning a brand new mower.
    The cause of the problems are the "tumblers" not disengaging correctly. These tumblers are 5 tiny cylindrical pins that are supposed to disengage the powered drive system from the wheels, so you can manually push the mower backwards and forwards. What is going wrong is that there is too much factory grease inside the housing where these tumblers reside, and too much grease on the friction clutch (basically a rubber washer under spring tension) . In a short time it builds up around the tumblers and causes some of them to stay in the wrong location. Then, you move the mower around manually and that pin catches randomly because the gob of grease alone held it near the locking location. The clutch also doesn't have enough force to move the cam because it's so loaded with grease that it provides very little force to move the cam as well. One or both of these is basically rendering the whole engagement mechanism hit or miss.
    I took my wheel off. Disassembled the clutch engagement assembly and with q-tips and a rag, removed all the built up grease. I used what grease remained to lightly move it around with a q-tip to finely coat the surfaces. Not so much that you see gobs of grease, but rather a thin clear coat. Reassembled and now it's as reliable as can be! No more hanging/locking wheels. I tried every combination of everything to get it to hang and it wouldn't do it anymore. I even tried using the powered drive while manually putting reverse(pull) pressure on the mower to slow it down. The second I let off the power drive, the wheels released instantly and I was pulling it backwards freely.
    Steps:
    - Remove hub-cap on wheel. This caps just pops off. There is a tiny open groove on one side of the hub-cap where you can insert/pry a thin screw-driver.
    - Remove bolt.
    - Remove big C-clip. Careful. There is a spring under mild tension. Also, note the order of two washers under it.
    - Pull off nylon gear. Note black rubber washer under it. That is the slip-clutch. Most likely covered in lots of grease. Your call on whether removing some access is needed or not. I cleaned it and just left a fine coat of grease. It seemed to provide more clutching power to move the cam on the tumblers.
    - Remove small C-clip.
    - At this point you are removing the two-part engagement with the 5 tumbler pins. Don't lose parts here!
    - I took this assembly to a kitchen table with lots of light and cleaned everything up, getting the excess grease out. You will see that the pins like to stick, while some won't and will fall out easily. NOTE: When you put it together, the 5 sided cam has to be aligned correctly, or it won't fit over the shaft when you put it back together again. A little trial-and-error will help you figure out the right way. Look down the shaft hole to see how the flat sides need to line up.
    Just an FYI of how this engagement system works: The nylon cam basically moves in one direction, while the metal one moves in the opposite direction. If you look at the wheel, you will see the gears are engaged from opposite sides, causing them to spin in opposite directions at the same time. This happens when you manually spin the wheel in either direction. This keeps the power assist drive shaft disengaged. Now, if the power assist is driving the wheels, then the tumbler pins engage and drive the wheel. You can play with this when you have the wheel off. Just try turning each of the gears in opposite directions to see it work. If you move them in the same direction, they lock. Opposite direction, and they spin freely.
    Hope this helps. I'll do what I can to assist anyone that wants to try this out. I little mechanical know-how, a few tools, and patience are required.
    Steven
    BONUS FIX: Tired of that clunking sound front the front wheels? You know, that annoying "cheap feel" sound as you go over bumps in your yard? Pop the plastic hub cap off of your front wheel. Remove the bolt. Put a washer with a 1/2" hole over it and put the bolt back on. Repeat for other front wheel. It will take up the slack in the wheel on the black shaft. Your wheel should turn freely, but not wobble and make that "cheap sounding" noise anymore.

    This is exactly what I needed!!! Thank you! I have only used the mower once, and my husband did everything, and I cut the grass. I planned to finish decorating the Christmas tree, but my dogs were begging me to go outside and play, so of course I did. We have a really big backyard, lots of gumball trees. I don't know how to drive husband's 0 turn mower. I tried once and ran into a pole! I was going to rake and saw the EGO, so I decided to use it.
    I couldn't remember anything about getting it set up to mow! My husband is in Australia working its Saturday morning in Charleston SC, and it is Sunday, 3:00 am in Sydney. I don't think my problem is a good reason to wake him up.
    You're step by step video is the reason the Christmas tree is not getting decorated 😮
    I couldn't figure out how to put the mulcher part on. Mine looks a little different than yours.

    I use 3 things to clean my EGO mower. A Liberman kitchen broom, soft but firm bristles, a Liberman hand brush, and my EGO Leaf Blower. Always clean the mower after every use so the grass does not dry and stick to the mower deck. Using the Liberman broom you can clean the grass from under your mower in less than two minutes, and don't have to worry about the blades cutting you. Use the Liberman hand brush to clean the wheels and any stubborn grass/mud stuck anywhere the broom won't take off. If you have let the mower sit and the grass/mud has dried, then you can drip the broom/brush into a bucket of water to soften and remove the grass/mud. Lastly I use my EGO leaf blower to remove anything loose stuck to the mower, and the grass that has fallen loose on the deck from the broom/brush. Hope this helps someone.

    The trouble with the EGOs is that regularly folding and unfolding the handle will eventually result in damage to the control wiring, most likely at the point where you snap the right side locking tab. In my case, after two years of occasional use, the self propel mechanism began operating only at full speed. If you're handy and can keep track of numerous loose parts (photograph everything), then you can bypass the damaged wire and it's good to go. EGO's design should've better anticipated pinch points that would inevitably damage the control wiring. Trust me, there's zero extra wire length to afford proper flex and there's almost zero chance you can pull another wire through the wiring looms inside the handle even using the existing wire to pull it -- I ran a new wire outside the looms and hope for the best.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  2 года назад

      That's interesting. Now, I of course don't have the self propelled so I don't know of the possible issues that come with it. Now with mine, I fold the handle back down every time I am done using it. And it has been the only mower that I have used for my yard for over 3 years now. So, it sucks that you have had trouble with the self propelled component.

    I just picked up an Ego self-propelled mower recently & stumbled upon your channel. thanks for sharing useful info on the mower.
    2 questions...
    - how would I care for batteries, when they are not in use, or during cold (and sometimes wet) winter months?
    - how often should blades be sharpened, if i mow my (front & back) yard every 2 weeks?

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  Год назад +1

      @T Lin thanks for watching and thanks for the questions. First caring for the batteries is easy. Not leaving them on the chargers all the time is first. When they are done, take them down. Second what to do during winter when they might be used at all. The EGO brand batteries will actually take themselves down to a 30% charge after not being used for over a month. That is the best charge for Lithium Ion batteries during storage. Now I keep mine in the garage all winter long with no troubles. Though when it get's real cold out there, like when the garage stays below freezing all the time and I know I am going to need them for something I bring them in. A frozen battery does not charge well, nor have good run time.
      And for your last question. At the start to every season. Electric mowers need to have the blades sharpened more often because they don't spin as fast. They have the torque needed to power through long tough grass, but the fact is they just don't spin as fast. So keeping the blade nice and sharp is more important.
      Hope that helps. Have a great day!

    • @tylin168
      @tylin168 Год назад

      @@AroundTheHome1 thank you for the thorough explanation. I'll have to re-watched your blad sharpening clip & take down the names of the gadgets/tools (sander & such) needed to loosen & sharpens the blade.
      it def does go near below 0 here during wintertime & my garage feels/becomes an "ice chest", so I'm likely going to store the battery/batteries somewhere indoors. I just wonder whether a heat blanket is needed to keep them, as well as my other wares warm through the cold winter months?!

    Love the mower and the concept...but the batteries suck, IMO! Had mine three years and the batteries have gotten so temperamental I can barely get my yard done each week; and the price of replacement batteries is ridiculous when compared to other brands, again IMO.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  5 месяцев назад

      Sorry your battery crapped out at 3 years. They do have a three year warranty and I have had to use it just last season. They were good to replace it, but you do need to get it from an authorized dealer and register the warranty. They are not cheap, can't argue that. There are some generic options available. ruclips.net/video/fD89MR6yto0/видео.html

    • @AroundTheHome1

      It's three different ways to mow. If you want to mulch, then you just need the plug. If you want to discharge then just the shoot. And if you want the bag, no plug or shoot, just the bag. Now if you are bagging I do recommend the high lift blade. ruclips.net/video/mI1Ewtd2F_8/видео.html

    What to do when the exclamation mark is flashing

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  2 года назад

      That normally happens when you bog down the motor to much. This is when a gas mower would stop running, the electric shuts down to keep from damaging the motor. Normally it's just too much grass under the mower so move to a clear spot and get going again in a few seconds after the flashing stops. It is possible you have something wound around the blade that also needs to be cleared. Just remove the battery before working with the blade.

      No, that is the newer select cut mower and it is designed to use both to cut cleaner. I'm afraid that I don't have experience with that model, wish I did. Or, at least I am assuming that is what you have. There is supposed to be 3 different interchangeable blades for that mower. The mulching blade, which you see in this video. A high lift blade, that I feature in another video that helps with bagging. And an extended run time blade, that well does what it says. It helps to save battery power. I hope that answers your question.

      Oh excellent, I didn't know it kept the grass under to be cut mulched. Now I see the benefit. Good to know. Thanks! I believe there is also the side discharge which has another function and I believe that's to prevent grass build up on your deck.

    My battery has been dying within 20 minutes and I’ve only used the mower twice. My grass has been tall and I am cutting it down to two inches so I think that may be the problem. There seems to be little airflow in the drum and grass builds up quick. Any tips?

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  2 года назад

      Roy, first I need to ask you some questions. You say you have only used the mower twice. Twice this season, or like you just bought it brand new and it has only mowed twice ever? Are you cutting it on the # 2 mark? Do you have it set to mulch, or are you bagging it? And is the battery actually dead, or is it just shutting off from working too hard?

    • @RoyRidgewater
      @RoyRidgewater 2 года назад

      @@AroundTheHome1 I bought it about a month ago. I’ve only used it twice so far. I have it on the mulching setting right now. I wanna say the battery is dying so quickly because it’s working too hard

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  2 года назад

      @Roy Ridgewater that is possible. Though, even the few times that I really worked mine and got it to shut down because I just bogged it down too hard the battery still lasted over half hour. I mean, it is possible that you are working it even harder. Do you have a really thick grass like Bermuda? Do you have a power gauge on the battery?

    How about battery maintenance.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  Год назад

      You know, that is a good question. When charging the battery it is best to let it cool down a bit before charging it. If you don't have time to wait, these EGO chargers have fans in them that blow air through the battery to help keep it cool while charging. When they are done charging, take them off the charger and store them in a cool, dry area. A shelf in the garage is just fine. The EGO brand batteries will automatically take themselves down to a 30% charge after no use for over 30 days. This is a hibernation stage for the best storage of Lithium Ion batteries. All you need to do is put them on the charger for them to charge back to full and you are ready to use again. I hope that answers your question.

    I bought one in July 2022. It's now November 8th 2022 and the battery is failing. It will only cut a very small front lawn before it's 3/4's done. It occasionally stops and displays four RED lights instead of green. What's worse is that EGO's help line is too busy to answer. I used the call back feature on the assistance line and it's now been three days with no call back. I'll be going back to gas very shortly. Not impressed and we feel that we were scammed by EGO.

      I know their customer service is not what it should be, but if you registered the warranty and did buy it from an authorized dealer then they will take care of that defective battery.

      That is bad, and I understand. I didn't have problems when I contacted customer service about my battery, but that was a couple years ago. Sad to hear that it is this bad. Did you not call a second time in case the call back feature just glitched?

    • @AroundTheHome1

      And I'm just going to say this. It sounds like you were waiting for a reason to go back to gas. I honestly have never heard of anyone calling the company when something went wrong with their gas mower. Does that even happen, or do they just take it back to the store. I honestly see many people bringing back gas powered trimmers, chain saws, and mowers back every year. I am not trying to sell you on this system, but I have used it for that past 4 years and except for one battery I have had no other problems. I can't tell you how many people I see every year in the Lowe's return line with gas powered equipment needing to return it. I do hate that you have had a bad experience with your EGO equipment.

      @@AroundTheHome1 Rest assured I didn't put out almost $1000.00 Canadian dollars with the intention of going back to gas. I bought the mower because it was quiet. I never expected a battery that was this poor. And why wouldn't I call the company assistance line? That's what it's there for; that's why they ask you to register the machine. Been a week now and no call back. That tells me all I need to know. This is an experiment (an expensive one) that has been a disappointment.

      @@AroundTheHome1 Thank you, I can normally repair petrol mowers etc but would have to take this in to be repaired. The motor works as it still drives along but the blade wont engage.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  3 года назад

      Well, if you have to take this in vs repair it yourself, then yes that will most likely be more expensive. So, the self propelled, drive motor still works. So, power is still getting through the main circuit board most likely. Could be a bad sensor or safety switch. Do the headlights come on? And comparing the repairs on the electric vs the gas is like apples and oranges. Sure, the gas does not have a circuit board to go bad, but the electric doesn't have a head gasket that could go bad nor rings that could burn up.
