From Slater Designs
The FRK Plus is a classic squash tail, high performance shortboard, refined and calibrated over the past three years with Kelly, Brodi, Betty Lou, and
others.
This new squash version of the FRK is meant to be ridden slightly shorter than the original FRK round tail. It has all the original on-wave benefits of the original FRK with a touch more release through turns that comes from the squash tail and minor adjustments to how the concaves and fin placements relate to the increased surface area of the squash when compared to a round tail.
The feedback on this shape has been that it has a super quick rail to rail responsiveness mixed with extremely good drive and release: Most intermediate and above surfers will appreciate the FRK Plus for the way this shape gets out of your way to the point that you don't even notice it's there - it feels like the most high performance expression of your intentions possible.

Nice!
Thanks!
These are epic! Keep them coming Wooly
Thanks mate 🤙
Great work Wooly!
Thanks! 🙏
Thanks for the review wooly . Yew !
🙏🤙🤙🤙
Another nice review
Thanks 🙏 mate 🤙
That board looked spicy Wooly 🔥
Nice. Looks like it can work in less than epic conditions too.
It’s does but better in a powerful wave with a good bowl.
Rippinggggg 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
🙏🤙
Looks solid waiting on that Monsta 10 review wondering how these two boards compare
Similar wave range but the Monsta 10 probably surfs down a touch better than the Slater.
Both are great boards!
@WoolyTV How would you compare FRK+ to Flatearth? I have FE and the board is totally versatile and maneuverable. Do you think this board is a good addition to the quiver? I remember you were surfing FE at 6’0 36L and you mentioned that you would size it up to 6’1 without losing its performance. Would you size up FRK+ with extra foam from 6’1 to 6’2? Thanks Wooly for sharing your useful reviews with us!
Hi mate
The FRK plus is way more of a performance board compared to the FE. The FE would work in a very wide range of conditions whereas the FRK plus needs a good quality wave to get moving. I found this one to be the correct size for me. I would not go up as this size did everything I needed from it.
Awesome review, as always. Would you pick this board over the sci-fi in ok to decent surf. Also, do you think sizing up 1 size would be too much?
Thanks 🙏. Yes I prefer this one over the Sci Fi in good waves.
The Sci Fi would probably grovel better. This one is a high performance board 🤙
So sick I was waiting for this, when is the volcanic coming out?
I’m not sure mate. We have the Ibolic ones in the shop and the look/feel great. I’m sure they will do it in Volcanic at sometime.
Looks really nice. Very similar in outline and bottom contours to one of my favourite boards for good waves a 6'2 Firewire/Pyzel Amigo (FST)...is that board brushed carbon?
Volcanic construction made with basalt
@@WoolyTV Cheers Wooly, just watched a video explaining the tech and it appears it literally has volcanic rock infused with the glass and also basalt which is said to give a similar to carbon strength and weight perfomance. Very interesting, I thought it was a marketing name but apparently there is literally volcanic rock used in the construction. Man how the fark did they come up with that LOL
@@VirtualHorizonz it’s super strong too. Barely have a deck dent on that board
@@WoolyTV Nice 😀🤙
I've got a 6'0 FST Amigo my fav board to, what fins do you ride in yours?
FireWire really needs to think about how they name models. Something like FRK “+” and “too” fish are not friendly for the search engine.
I searched for the board yesterday to look for some reviews and did not see your video. Anyways, I still bought it. 😂
You have a good point there! I always put the brand name in first then the model and that usually gets my what I need.
massive backside mooves🤟.how do you like the volcanic in comperesion to the LFT and Helium 2?
does it feels lighter and glexier then the LFT?
The volcanic feels nice and solid under foot. Probably closer to a PU feel than the other construction.
Didn’t look like a fin problem on the right, it looked like a exit rocker problem. It was super slow in the wraps and bogged. But large fins should give you more lift and drive. I’d say it’s a tail rocker problem. It went top to bottom well on the left because of the tail rocker but it went shit on the right cause you weren’t surfing it as vertical.
Changed the fins to a medium and it went good in smaller rights a couple of weeks after the review. It’s got a single running the whole way through and a fair bit of tail rocker so it needs a bowl to work in but the smaller fins helped me get a better direction change on my forehand. The left was steep and way more powerful than that lazy right I surfed on the review.
Heya Wooly, love the reviews !
I have a Flat Earth and a 6"4 Chilli Faded 2 (pretty much chilli's version of the Ghost I reckon)
I want something to fit in between these two for down south and Indo.
What's your thoughts between The FRK you just tested, Monsta 10 or Pyzel Shadow, or any other recommendations?
Hi mate
I would probably fill that gap with the FRK plus or a Monsta 10. Both would do the job well.
If you would prefer a PU for that size surf then I would look at the M10 but if you like the feel of the epoxy then the FRK would be sick 🤙
@@WoolyTV cheers bro, will have to hold and give both a feel up to decide, sorta thikinkg the M10 may be more forgiving which defo helps this average Joe 🤣
Love the firewire tech in indo glass though !
@@joshsmith7999 they are both great performances boards. I have completed the M10 review, that one will be next or the one after
Hi Wooly,
Comparing the FRK+ and the Red Tiger; which of the two would you say is more of a step up which is more suitable to shoulder to way over head waves?
Per your opinion, will any of them will work on smaller waves?
Hi mate
Neither of them are really a ‘step up’ both more of a performance board.
The FRK + really needs a good quality wave to get moving so I would say the Red Tiger surfs down a little better. Both of them go well in overhead surf! Similar wave range but I think the Red Tiger has the wider wave range.
@@WoolyTV Thank you so much Wooly for your clear answer; you have really helped me in choosing between the two. 🤙
As an important side note I really like watching your content and great reviews, keep them coming...
I'm not sure, I can't place it, but I think I've seen other boards where you've surfed with way more flow. The backhand was on, but on the rights the snaps the board had an awkwardness to it.
Yes I agree, I had a set of fins that were too big in when I was surfing the rights and this board works better in good quality, size surf. If I was riding an over head right I think you would see an improvement.
Hey Wooly…I was tied between the FRK+ and the JS Monsta 10 or one of the Xero models….how do they compare? Similar rocker to the Monsta 10? I’m loving the FRK+ but still thinking about a JS….
Hi mate, I havent measured the tail rocker in either board but the FRK has plenty of tail rocker and a single concave through the whole board where as the Monsta 10 has a medium tail rocker and a single/double concave.
Monsta 10 and FRK plus will need a quality wave to get the most out of them whereas the Xero Gravity will surf down well in smaller surf. Hope that helps
@@WoolyTV Thanks Woolley…I had in my head that the Monsta 10 rocker would be more extreme than the FRK+, with the Monsta being JSs main performance shape with the exception of the FMN…I can surf the FRK+ in smaller surf as long as there’s a bit of shape to the wave so am wondering if it’d be the same for the Monsta 10? From Kale Brocs review it seems like I could….
Be a good board to try one day
😂 you will one day
@@WoolyTV hahahaha
Did you feel any difference between this volcanic technology compared to helium?
which one is your preference
Could it be that the firewire trend is to make all boards now in volcanic and ibiloc, removing the helium?
Yea I think that’s what’s happening. I liked it better than the helium construction. Very strong and also high performance. I have used the ibolic construction and that feels better than the helium too. 🤙

Have you surfed Flat Earth? It's my all-road, HPSB. Would the FRK+ make a good difference on 7ft waves? xrs
The FRK+ will handle and out perform the FE in overhead surf. ruclips.net/video/UN9PDRkxyso/видео.htmlsi=ak88KqnPEiVVW5mo

do you feel its user friendly ? need a board for good waves, and my decent wave board, Pyzalien 2, which i loved and was super user friendly, gave up recently...
I found it easy to ride especially in good quality waves. It doesn’t like fatter slower waves at all.
@@WoolyTV perfect, because thats not the kind of wave i want to ride with it at all. Compared to the sci fi 2.0 or even pyzalien 2, how easy to ride it is at the right wave range ?
@@KC-ro9ro much better than a Sci-Fi. Very different board to a P2 but a similar wave range.
Review DHD utopia pls!
Hi mate
That’s not on the cards in the near future. Maybe down the track but I have 10 or so boards backed up.
a good board for Bali 🤟🏻 !?
Yes it sure would be.
How did you get this color?
It was a special make up that the guys gave me. That’s the Volcanic construction that they are using on other models but not the FRK just yet.
@@WoolyTV🎉
Hi ! Witch one do you prefer between FRK + and JS Schooner ?
Very different boards. Schooner is more of a step up the FRK plus is a performance board. The FRK excels in head high surf where the Schooner likes bigger waves 🤙
U sized wrong, should have been on 64. Best shorty ever.
Volume was perfect for me. For the type of waves I surfed it was spot on. Paddled well and surfed great.
