  • Creating Perlon Inspired Minimal
Run by Zip and Markus Nikolai, Perlon has been arguably the most important and forward-thinking minimal label of the last 20 years. In this tutorial, we look at what makes the sound of the label so unique - focussing specifically on some of the early tracks that were key in its development. We then break down a loop I’ve made and look at some techniques we can use in modern production to achieve this sound.

Top notch video! Please try to create Dimbiman style, it's really unique (e.g. Early Bird Hype, V, Planet Curry etc). Great sound design, great groove with interesting micromanagement play with percussion details that build a catchy beat.

@@studioorbituk great that you appreciated. I also forgot to mention his use of vocal samples and micromanagement with them, he was a singer in late 80s and early 90s, so I think he kept interest in playing with vocal sounds in his unique manner. You can hear his maximised strange sound in the track “Tebh theme”. Top notch hihats (they give perfect “rhythm within a rhythm feel) and odd vocal cuts.

Big thanks for the videos! I've been taking plenty of notes. Quick question: what kind of Mac computer are you using? Does your CPU usage ever get heavy when producing full tracks?

Currently using the 2022 M1 Pro Max MacBook Pro. Never had any issues with CPU dropouts or crashes. Great machine!

How were you able to view the UAD presets? Did they update the UI?

With UAD Spark you can click the preset box and it opens up the preset selector window on the side
