The Magic of Making Sound

  • In Hollywood, everything is magic and make-believe, even sounds. When you watch a film that immerses you completely in its world, you’re probably hearing the work of sound artists. If the work is done right, you won’t be able to tell that the “natural” sounds on screen are manufactured with studio props. That's the challenge for Warner Bros. Foley artists Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang. Theirs is a practice in recreation, one creative element at a time.

      I think we forget that all of the mics in production are used for dialog, so they are all close to the actors recording speach. The mics on the cameras arent used because they pic up all the unwanted sounds and the sound isnt as crisp or dynamic. By adding sound in post, each audio has its own track so you can control each individual element better for a more dynamic shot.

      @last call no, i was responding to the first comment! Maybe it didn't come across as I meant it... the first comment said, the used the real sound things make, but how could you use the real sound of a things or animated animals, that would never be able to do such things? Because that just never happens in real life so they have to make the sounds for that! I already knew about Foley artists before this video :)

  • @blzedbeats5186

    It's not about faking the sounds... it's about improving the quality of the movie/video..
    They make these for the details you hear but probably missed or don't care about.. the actual audio from the video would probably sound like shit.

    • @nothingleft3473
      @nothingleft3473 5 лет назад +25

      I don't agree. Why not just mic up the natural sounds as they are happening? They have boom mic guys, so I don't understand why not. It'd save alot of time and money in post production too and you'd actually get the authentic sounds.

    • @CorboWill
      @CorboWill 5 лет назад +131

      @@nothingleft3473 One issue that comes up is when the shot is too wide to even have the boom operator close to the sound. This is often dealt with by getting the Foley from the same location as the shot was taken. But more often than not, film sets are busy and loud, and there just is not enough time to have everyone wait and be quiet while the sounds are recorded. The other big issue is that a location has a lot lot lot of natural sounds, like cars, construction, wind, and people that aren't in your shot. A recording studio will let you capture totally clean audio.

      If you need a specific busy traffic sound, yeah you need to go out and record that. A street in India sound very different from a street in Chicago.
      Or human chatter or crowd sound. Going to a crowded stadium and record the sound is much more efficient and real than layering two person talking over and over again.

      RTD No, you're wrong.
      It should be what sound better. Because sound like lights or music is there to set an ambiance and sometime to pull a message.
      In a dramatic scene, silence, then cocking of a gun, cracking of wood, a droplet of blood. Just imagine.
      In this case, it's more important that each sound is strong, carry a lot of "imagery" in the mind of the spectators, rather than being the actual reality sounds.
      Also, has it is said in the end of this clip, sounds have to fight screentime with dialog and music.

      I know some of the effects of video games, they have been using modern Foley things as well since the N64/PS1.
      I know for the first Tony Hawk Pro Skater game, the sound artist had a bunch of surfaces in the back of his house. That is him you hear riding the skateboard all over to get the right sound. Of course he never had been on a skateboard before, so most of the pained effects are him accidentally wiping out and recording it.
      Now for something from last year. In order to make the meat exploding sounds of the Mancubus in the new DOOM 2016 game, they slathered steak with a bunch of honey, blew it out of a vuvuzela and into canned soup to make gory sounds.
      I have no idea how they come up with some of these sounds. Corn starch in a bag for snow. What.

    For people wondering why this is necessary, there are quite a few reasons why this is still done for films and TV shows.
    Firstly, movie sets are noisey. There is noise from equipment, from crew and from uncontrollable background noise from the set location. This is the same reason why even the dialogue is commonly rerecorded later in a process called ADR.
    Secondly, recording these sounds in a studio means that you have more control in the aesthetic of the soundtrack. An example of this would be in comparing the sound for a movie fight scene, where the sounds are very exaggerated and hyped, and a real life fight.
    Thirdly, it's important to keep the dialogue audio and the Foley/sound effects audio recorded separately from each other. This is so that the dialogue tracks can be removed and replaced for dubbed foreign translations. This would not be possible if the audio was recorded as is on set, as the dialogue would be present in the recorded SFX.
