I use both. With a lot of repeats on the delay it gets kind of crazy though. In that case I go 'verb into delay for a thick layer of ambience, or delay into verb for something more controllable. Long 'verb into long delay is one of my favorite way having noise on tap.
I prefer have them in parallel, some delay&reverb units have this option (for example NUX Atlantic), and it sounds the best, you get exactly what you want from both effects. But i use stereo (i have a small child and i play 99% of the time on my headphones with torpedo captor after my HRDLX4) with delay & reverb after speaker load. But if ill have to go back then i think reverb last is kinda better and more natural, because in natural space delay repeats are affected by the diffusion that natural reverberation gives. And also it was used like this forever, because most amps have build in reverb, and ppl use delay pedals before it. Ofcourse i don't know anything about the subject but i wanted to say something that makes sense (at least for me).
Reverb into delay, usually. Long time ago I had a rack that went stereo into two cabinets. I had two Quadraverbs and sometimes I sent reverb into one and delay into the other, but usually went reverb>delay and the delay ping ponged between the cabs.
More or less by accident, I put my Faux Tape Echo after reverb today. And I thought to myself, "sounds better, innit"? I couldn't help but google the thing, and now you've confirmed my findings. Thanks a lot!
I'm going to randomly just say that I've got a Tumnus (best overdrive I own) and and an Ego (best compressor I own) and I couldn't be more satisfied. You make damn good pedals.
I run it like you do with two amps using the reverb chamber on the first amp. On the delay side, I run a modulation effect into the delay, a Boss DD-2. 2 OD's are in front before I split using a MimiQ.
Thank you for doing this video. The literal side by side comparisons with minimal but meaningful commentary is great. I'm a huge fan of having the ability to maintain dry signal with effect signal, so I think I would naturally gravitate toward the final rendition of separation into two amps... But this video confirms it for me. The closer I can get to that, the better. Its nice to get new ideas.
I’ve been using an ABY before the amp, end of the chain and sending one to a dry amp and then other to an amp with an effects loop with the delay into Reverb, for a wet/dry sound. Once I can get another amp I’m going wet/dry/wet and will experiment splitting the Reverb and delays to each wet amp
When running an amp, I usually put all my reverb, delay, and modulations in the effects loop. I run them Mod., Delay, Reverb. I do have a Quad Box from Morely, to use multiple guitars and amps but I didn't have any pedals that ran in stereo. One amp had higher gain than the other, but each had chorus/reverb built in, and one had delay mixed with chorus . P.S. I got a huge chuckle out of the graphic of the Gorilla Amp! That was my first amp, I still have it. A GG-20!
I have my preferences for pedals order, however, I once saw a young blues trio live. The guitarist had a "roaring" solo tone which I dug. Turns out he had a reverb pedal before his OD pedal!!! Just goes to show.
For everyday playing, delay > reverb as the reverb tends to smooth out the edges of the repeats from the delay. When I'm filling both the lead and keys roles in a band, reverb > delay > delay > reverb for a big spacey sound
The 2 amp version is sweet. It’s clear but yet complex. But I can’t say I like one any more than the other. All are interesting and usable sounds. I look at them as flavors. For practical everyday purposes, I generally go delay before reverb. Love your vids, podcasts, pedals, etc! Thank you for sharing!
I run 2 amps wet/dry. My wet amp has 3 pedals in it's loop. Boss BF-2 into Boss DD-7 mono-in/stereo-out to a RV-500 which then goes back to mono. Like this I get delay into verb, or delay into verb into delay and much more. I have the possibility of running 8 delays and 2 reverbs in any combination possible. Even more fun running it in stereo.
Stereo into two amps was really interesting, because in headphones, the delays sounded like they were actually echoes reflecting off a surface in the distance.
On the pedalboard of my dreams I like taking a smooth rich plate reverb and running an echo plex type delay into that smooth rich plate reverb aw the creamy rich goodness
I'm with you Brian. I prefer the seperate delay and reverb signals into a stereo mix. This is similar to what I use in the DAW. But for live use, the truth is I run mono delay(s) into a mono reverb into a single amp. El Capistan set to toggle between slapback tape echo - or lush, ambient delays (via Favorite switch) into a digital reverb set to big plate or spring reverb that is only sometimes on (for surf tunes etc) into the amp - which also has a warm, fairly intense, but very shallow reverb (almost like a 'slapback' reverb) set. It's a quick, easy setup and I still have all of my timed based effects covered. Keep up the great work mate. The outtakes are a crackup too :)
This how I see the application of both of these. Reverb into delay helps you to extend the tail of your playing. It’s much more subtle, but it is a great sound that you can count on. For delay into reverb I feel like it has a bot more of an ambience to it. It’s much more noticeable so for something rhythmic is makes more sense because the delay is much more noticeable in this wiring. But both sound awesome, why do people find it necessary to argue about this stuff.
I have good luck running tc mini spark boost, tc delay (Doug Aldrich) tone print into a digitech hardwire reverb on the plate setting. All knobs at 11 o’clock on reverb. I step on the mini spark for leads. It doesn’t color my tone. 🤘
Chuckled at the Gorilla amp on the 'diagram' screen. A sweet 5 watter is what I started with. If you only used a Memphis Strat copy instead of a Firebird X.
In the circuit in your Ethereal pedal, does the delay going into the reverb, or vice versa? That pedal produces some beautiful sounds! I’ve been loving playing with it.
God damn I love your videos! I opt for delay after reverb. That said. I’ve typically ran mono but now I’m running in stereo. Quasi like your current favorite way. Using the oc10 I run left channel through everything effect wise. Then send the right into a second loop into the second amp using stereo right. I’m loving it though I’m still messing around. Gear is fun! Unrelated but riddle me this. Why aren’t Rivera amps more popular?! I’m completely stunned how phenomenal those k tre are!
i have a rev pedal set for shimmer. i put the delay after it to enhance the shimmer and the delay is in tap tempe which gives the shimmer morer control and length. (then the amps reverb is on after this
The correct way is one in the front one in the effect loop at least three boosts on the pedal board for looks never plugged in and just for flavor an eq between the pick and the guitar.
I use the eqd dispatch master which has reverb and delay, it sounds really great to me. I never thought about reverb before delay but I bet it works well for longer delays with repeats. It has more definition. This is a great vid!
I have a stereo effects loop on my amp, and a stereo delay that lets me set the left out put channel to dry, so I have the left channel (dry) into reverb into left channel return in the loop. The wet delay signal goes into the right return.
Using my fender amp as an example... Fender designed the reverb circuit to feed into the vibrato circuit; therefore, reverb should always feed into delay, tremolo, etc.
I find delay into reverb is great for standard rhythm playing or some lead guitar parts as well but the reverb into delay gives it so much more spacial dynamics. For 16 years I have played absolutely nothing but delay into reverb and never questioned it because "thats how its supposed to be". Now that i am more experienced and branching out from my usual heavy metal playing I am discovering so much more that I ultimately can use with almost any genre of music.
Currently i run my amp on stage just for my dry sound, and have stereo delay/reverb running into DIs into the PA, and because of the sheer amount of delay /reverb i use, I've got 2 delays (running series or parallel depending on what patch I'm using), into reverb, into delay again! It makes such an insane wall of sound it's great, probably never gonna be able to gig it though because the board weighs a tonne 😂😂
I have always liked the trails of the delay to have the verb ADDED to them. It seems if I wash the whole delay and tone of the rig with a "too present" verb....it 's hard to get it to sit in a mix . jm2$
This is a great video. Thanks for doing it. I have mild reverb on my amp. I've using a Boss Waza Craft Delay. Just bought a Fender Marine Layer Reverb. I'm going to try reverb>delay>reverb. Let's see how it goes. Yours sounded fatter going R>D>R.
What you were going to say is "oh, btw, my left is your right and vice versa". ;) Cool vid. The stereo delay/reverb at the end sounded really nice in my good headphones. I've been experimenting recently with the order, and I'm still not sure. As you say, there is no wrong way. Which leaves a lot of room for experimentation and creativity. Which is nice. :)
I'm using my Stereo Phaser to split the sound that's coming out of my reverb and run those two channels each into a separate delay - each slightly off-set to one another for a really wide sound.
My signal chain is about as "textbook" and vanilla as can be. Tuner>wah>dirt>head>fx send> chorus> delay>reverb> fx return> cab No frills, no weird stuff
Two amps has really helped me find my sound. I'm 61 & play well. But it is a challenge for me to improve on touch. Boss is a good product. Can I ask what two amps you are using?
If I run 2 amps I tend to do a wet dry configuration . On a single amp I tend to run my delay into the reverb as the delay is the last thing in my pedal chain and the reverb is in the amp. I run my pedal boards most of the time , gain stuff 1st modulation stuff 2nd and delay stuff 3rd or last . I've thought about building a effects mixer to run them all parallel but have the option to run gain stuff into the delay but by the time I do that I could just buy something that already allows routing like that .
Use a delay with direct out, and put the wet signal into a reverb. It’s like a gangster version of pre-delay reverb. And use an RV-6 in delay mode so you have a delay on the reverb on your delay. And then midi sync the first delay with a tremolo and put that on the end of the wet signal chain so you can basically sidechain it and cut through the ridiculous mess of delay and reverb.
Thank you, that helped alot. I seem to understand better when you explain things. I just wish that brain fart at the end had a little reverb and delay 🙀
Oh dang! Just realized i am always in parallel because it's on daw sends. I may have to try some other routings. With my amp i always went delay then reverb. But i mostly record now.
Interesting stuff. I reflexively put the reverb last, but it seems putting delay last might give me a more natural sound, like the way a large room/stadium would sound, which is my preference. Gotta try this now!
I’ll be that weird guy and say this, try tremolo as the last in the chain. After delay and reverb. To stay on topic, I liked split stereo, sounds wonderful and fresh. 👍

In 45 years of playing I've tried just about everything...in every way. For me it works best with delay into reverb.
Reverb into delay, usually. Long time ago I had a rack that went stereo into two cabinets. I had two Quadraverbs and sometimes I sent reverb into one and delay into the other, but usually went reverb>delay and the delay ping ponged between the cabs.
I’m kind of a new player (6-9months) and new to effects... But I tend to go to the reverb into delay.
More or less by accident, I put my Faux Tape Echo after reverb today. And I thought to myself, "sounds better, innit"? I couldn't help but google the thing, and now you've confirmed my findings. Thanks a lot!
After years of delay into reverb, you just convinced me to try it the other way. Thanks Brian!
Delay into reverb. I treat delay as the effect and use the Reverb as a way to tune for the room or where the part should fit in the mix.
I love shimmer reverb into delay into spring reverb myself
This is incredibly useful. Switched my delay to after reverb and it sounds MUCH better for the setup
I'm going to randomly just say that I've got a Tumnus (best overdrive I own) and and an Ego (best compressor I own) and I couldn't be more satisfied. You make damn good pedals.
More definition Reverb -> Delay, darker sound Delay -> Reverb, usually do the latter, now definitely trying the former!
I run it like you do with two amps using the reverb chamber on the first amp. On the delay side, I run a modulation effect into the delay, a Boss DD-2. 2 OD's are in front before I split using a MimiQ.
One knowledgeable dude right here folks! thanks mate.. I know if I ever decide to pedal it up, I def know where I'm goin.

Thanks so much Brian for your Demo and advice. Great playing Brian 🎸❤️👍
I have delay, into delay, into delay/reverb, into delay, into reverb, into delay!
I use the Ethereal pedal and it sounds awesome. Great information, I've found there is no right or wrong, just the sound you're looking for.
Delay into Verb! Final Answer!!! For me it get a little lose and washy the other way around. Keep the vids coming!
The way you started this video was great thank you!!!!!
I require two amps. Smash one in two the other. But I just learned from this video that the two amps sound great as a chorus together. Beautiful!
Lately, I've been messing around with delay -> reverb -> delay like Devin Townsend. Fun stuff.

ohhh i totally dig the 2 amp setup ya got there in my ears
Until now I've always done delay into reverb. The sound I liked most is when reverb and delay were in parallel. That's definitely something to try.
Mastermind, thank u for videos and everything else u have done for us all…
thanks 4 dis episode brian i love ir experiments
On the pedalboard of my dreams I like taking a smooth rich plate reverb and running an echo plex type delay into that smooth rich plate reverb aw the creamy rich goodness

2 Amps is nearly perfect!
When you put some Vibrato on one amp (just a bit), it's ultimate stereo
Best kind of reverb and delay is both after the amp, with reverb both before and after the delay.
...
ie. playing an actual massive arena.
i have a rev pedal set for shimmer. i put the delay after it to enhance the shimmer and the delay is in tap tempe which gives the shimmer morer control and length. (then the amps reverb is on after this
I was literally looking for some input on this 2 days ago, this was uploaded at the perfect time lol
Brian, you're awesome.
The correct way is one in the front one in the effect loop at least three boosts on the pedal board for looks never plugged in and just for flavor an eq between the pick and the guitar.
My effects loop chain: reverb > reverb > delay > delay > drive > phase > trem > reverb > flange, so I've got most iterations possible.
I really like the parallel... definitely need to try it!
I use the eqd dispatch master which has reverb and delay, it sounds really great to me. I never thought about reverb before delay but I bet it works well for longer delays with repeats. It has more definition. This is a great vid!

Great vid guys! Stereo setup was very cool 🤘🏼
With two amps sounds phenomenal!!!
The "dry-thru" idea was cool!
I'm using my Stereo Phaser to split the sound that's coming out of my reverb and run those two channels each into a separate delay - each slightly off-set to one another for a really wide sound.
For recording i use 2 amps with different delay times. for playing live, one amp with 2 delays and reverb on the loop
Very very helpful, thanks a bunch!!!
Red Panda Context v1 into Skreddy Echo into Immerse MkII.
My signal chain is about as "textbook" and vanilla as can be. Tuner>wah>dirt>head>fx send> chorus> delay>reverb> fx return> cab
No frills, no weird stuff
Excellent video!
Until now I just played a really reverby guitar with an analogue delay into a digital echo. I'll have to try this
Thanks, I've been running a parallel setup, wondering if I was crazy.
I like using a stereo chorus as an amp splitter. Makes my strat sound much bigger
I agree with you.
Two amps has really helped me find my sound. I'm 61 & play well. But it is a challenge for me to improve on touch. Boss is a good product. Can I ask what two amps you are using?
@@davehersey4494 I use a 75 Fender Super reverb and a Blues deville. I use an attenuator on the super as well.
BRAIN ur a very smart good ball
Beautiful tone from that guitar/amp dude
that wampler spring reverb sounds good

i always used the delay last but i think reberb last at chain sound was warmer
Gorilla Amp! I spit my drink! Lol
Great to see the gorilla ay! Lol
Hahahahha
I feel like reverb adds where delay multiplies, so if you're tryna get more trails, delay should go last.
The reverb delay sounds nice
Love these videos
The Firebird X in the diagram is killing me
Reverb into delay 2:02
delay into reverb 2:21
With Reverb and tremolo parallel you can get a nice range of effects
I like two amps with a slight delay between them.
I like the 2 amp configuration but what about reverb into the amp and delay into the effects loop of the same amp?
I really like that guitar. Can you give me some information? Thanks
I love it, made by whitfill guitars, it’s a les Paul scale, set neck
Beautiful
The hand jester is respond/activate.
Delay into reverb for me BUT in a DAW I'll just put them in as sends so they're parallel and I'm too lazy to series them.
Two amps, one only dirt pedals (Fender tweed type amp) and to the other (Marshall style) delay into tremolo into reverb ...
It was worth getting the headphones out. @ 5:52
I usually run delay into reverb. I think I'm going to have to try parallel!
We want a tour of that pedal cupboard!
Show us delay and modulation before distortions.
Make sure the diagram has a Chapman stick into a Danelectro Honeytone.
how about distortion into compressor pedal vs compression pedal into distortion
Already got it on the channel, ruclips.net/video/Dn5tOKzGoXI/видео.html
Delay into reverb (cause Dan and Mick said so 😏). Have tried the split two amp thing and it sounds amazing! Wet dry is the best.
I’ll be that weird guy and say this, try tremolo as the last in the chain. After delay and reverb.
To stay on topic, I liked split stereo, sounds wonderful and fresh. 👍
*Subscriber 91.001* 😊
TY for all your great vids.
Learnd a lot.
I'm watching your channel for a long time but never subscribed, don't ask me why???
As a delay and reverb addict i have a small board with 7 delays and reverbs having always 1 reverb before the delays and 2 after.
So i can decide with a click 😆
Thank you!
I can dig it, but I've met studio engineers that will give me a look if the reverb is not the last in the signal chain but I may try this when they ain't lookin. Btw, the first pedal on my board is my ego compressor. They have no problem with that.
