A big sounding spring reverb into a compressor into a Big Muff sounds absolutely HUGE - compressor adds even more sustain to the reverb trails, added to even more by the Muff, which also distorts the trails and disguises the reverb as fuzzed out extra long sustain
It's good to be back, gang! I took some time to work on a video topic that I'm really stoked about. The magic you can achieve by running both a reverb at the front and the end of your signal chain. I hope you learn something from this video, or you at least enjoy the compositions in there. If you do, then please consider leaving a like, comment or share the video with your partners in tone. Endless gratitude to you all - Stefan
One thing that can be fun with a "boring" analogue synth is to put a reverb before distortion. So maybe put another reverb after that again? Yes, I'll try.
@ThePedalZone awesome video. I’ve come back to watch this a few times. Question: would you say there are any options for people that want an early chain reverb to do well in both categories “1 sustainer” and “2 shoegazer”? Need something for sustained modulation as well as that wall of heavy dirt that also adds sustain. Thanks again for the great demo videos and all the knowledge. Best pedal demo channel on RUclips.
Hey bro! Just picked up the new CXM Chase Bliss - Meris CXM 1978 reverb collab and it made me think of you. I’ll check to see if you put out of demo for it yet but if you haven’t you should. If there was ever a reverb pedal made for your style of playing, it’s the CXM.
Before: I'm finally done with my pedalboard. I don't need any more pedals. After: WELL I GUESS I NEED ANOTHER REVERB NOW. Serious cool video. I never knew how to create some of those textures.
I come back to this video every few months. Usually when I'm curious about something reverb related and then I usually stay to listen to the whole showcase 😅
out of the literal thousands of guitar effects and pedal videos i've watched over the past two decades.....this was one of the coolest, most interesting, varied, informative, fun, inspiring, and efficient videos I've ever seen. amazing
Stefan, another thing that makes this video so good is that a lot of us already have a substantial collection of pedals and are trying to wean ourselves off bad cases of GAS. This video, which highlights great use of existing pedals and is not simply a demo of the next "must have" pedals, breathes life into what we already have on our boards by providing inspiration to try new combinations of old favourites. I am not aware of anyone else doing this and I hope you find an expanded audience due to your efforts.
Stefan please make a patreon. I wanna throw money at you. You could do a more nerdy breakdown of pedals, showing what knobs you are turning and talk about why/what it is doing. I just got a Hedra and had extreme anxiety trying to figure out all the extra effects. I had to put it away in shame for another day. This happens a lot, so learning more about pedals and what the knobs are doing would be nice for complex pedals, or simpler ones for pedal newcomers. Or you could just put up little 1 minute clips of a pretty riff. It would be really nice to finally have some of your beautiful music. Or put up nothing and let me pay you because I think you're neat. I love what you do, please never stop
At first I was thinking oh boy... He just really likes reverb... But once you hit the early chain I immediately realized the usefulness and beauty of your point. Your playing of course illustrates it best. Rock on brother and thanks for your passion!
Thank you for making me feel less bummed out about all the cool reverb offerings that are NOT available in stereo. Perhaps I can get a dark world after all :)
There's definitely nothing to be bummed out about when it comes to mono reverbs. They sound absolutely otherworldly huge when fed into a stereo delay or stere reverb. Dark World is really cool and unique, that's for sure.
I’ve been a lifelong metalhead and experimental musician. The more I get into pedals, the more my style is changing. I’ve been looking to justify keeping my Avalanche Run while incorporating an additional verb in the chain. Thank you for this!
Thank you, my friend! Means a lot to me. I really enjoy making these tutorials. So it's awesome to hear that they are enjoyed on the other end of the screen as well 😊❤🙏
5:23 blew my mind! That is so cool. (Runs off to grab Dweller, Gravitas, and Fathom!) I'm sure I've said this before but i learn so much from how you combine pedals and techniques. I can't think of any one else who does this so well. Thanks Stefan.
I've long been running my Dark Star at the start of the chain, wedged between two drives. Bit of Keeley Caverns at the end of the chain for added sweetness.
This is great stuff, seriously. I found myself just lost in those post rock tunes everytime, forgot that this was a demo/tutorial. On that note, a tutorial on some of your ideas, composing, chords, anything really, would be so great.
Seconded. I would love a tutorial or description video of composition and playing thoughts. That and a behind-the-scenes production of these videos, video, are on my wishlist. I'd honestly even subscribe to a Patreon feed if these were on there...
Nothing beats a great 'Tonal-Teamwork'-episode! You inspired me to put my overdrive at the end of my signalchain, which has completely transformed my playing.
I wasn’t excited when I saw the title of this vid... but after watching it was actually one of my favs! I love the “step by step” on how to get those complex sounds! Inspired me big time! I just got done with a two hour creative ambient jam (by myself haha) to end my evening. Thanks man and job well done, again!!
I recently found your channel and now I can’t stop watching your videos. It’s like you’re in my head and it’s awesome. It’s also your fault I now own an Afterneath and a Moog expression pedal. Thanks a lot!
I should know by now that your videos should only be watched at the end of the day, and never ever on a lunch break while working from home...I mean I need to work and now all I want to do is go and play and try some of this out...thanks for the bucket-load of ideas and sounds to explore!!!!
Sounded excellent in my headphones. Thanks for sharing, I've never even thought of putting a before and after reverb inline... goes to show even after 50 years, you can still learn.
You definitely taught me the way with the afterneath early in the chain... the softer decay is perfect for elongating that signal so you can phase, and cut and tremolo it up! I remember you doing a video about mods after the reverb a while back and it really has been a game changer!
Wow! Again, WOW! Much like other comments, I kept my reverb toward the mid to end. But now, I will go beginning and end with varied settings. Thanks for getting me out of my 'verb rut!
Time and time again you make really beautiful music with your demos. This one really reminds me to simplify my setup. I’ve got multiple huge boards and I’m better off writing when I focus on just a couple of tones and pedals rather than stacking 10 different pedals and just making a mess (sometimes fun but always chaotic and only rarely useful).
Another great video! I run a Ghost Echo up front into my fuzz into the Ringworm into Rainbow Machine into a few delays then a T.C. Electronics Surfrider set at 80% wet into a Drone Rainger into Overdrive into the Tensor into the Obscura Delay into the HOF2 reverb into the Particle finally into the Kafka reverb. Never can have too many delay or reverb pedals! Awesome job, Stefan, keep it up 👍
Man, the video is lovely, as yours always are. It definetely solved some of my doubts, signal chain wise, and I can't wait for some other contents like this. You keep fueling my love for pedals, but most important, justify my money spending haha. Which pickups are installed in your Tonfuchs? Your guitar sound at 11:06 is great even without pedals.
Thank you so much for this inspiring, thought-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable video! Would happily watch more! I have been stuck in the “reverb at end of chain” mindset, even though… {1) I have a large Temple pedalboard with multiple “MOD” units along the side that are simply stereo 1/4” jacks that can be inserted anywhere I want in the signal chain. I have my “go-to” pedals on the board, and this allows me to insert pedals at whatever point the jacks are placed in the chain. {2) As if that wasn’t enough, I have a Morningstar ML10X switcher that I set up with three (or sometimes four) stereo loops (i.e. one for “tone,” one for delays/chorus etc., one for reverbs). That allows me to configure the various loops in serial (but able to change the order in the sequence), or parallel, or any combination. (3) Combining (1) and (2) allows me to add external pedals nearly anywhere in my chain. Your video has inspired me to get much more experimental how I use all that freedom, including moving at least one of the insert points much earlier in the chain (where I thought things would always be pretty much the same). Thank you so much!!!
Honored to hear that my video gave you some newfound inspiration. And your setup sounds really cool. Flexibility like that definitely deserves to be experimented with. Have fun, buddy! :)
One of my fave from these setups has to be the bitcrushing reverb going through the aqueduct! This just give off that nostalgic lofi vibe going on and can be perfect to a cyberpunk film as well! Awesome vid about reverbs man!
Cheers! Probably my fave as well, alongside the Procession into Thermae. But yeah, Dark Star always adds the brooding lo-fi vibes, and some vibrato just makes it all move in a wonderfully nostalgic way.
Great to have you back! Reverb early in the chain is definitely cool, lately I've been using the Spring Reverb in the Koma Elektronik FieldKit FX first in line when playing with synths and everything else after that. Nice and spacey 👌
Thank you again, that was super helpful. Going to put my Afterneath at the front of the chain now, makes perfect sense. This is the best of your videos so far though - because I have several of the pedals already lol and don't need to buy any more ;-) Cheap day out...
When you introduced the last "Transformer" section you said it will be "synthetic" and i thought; oh scary ! i usually don't like it ! ... but the last part with the dark star pedal was pretty interesting i must say ! one thing is for sure you have great taste for ambient/shoegaze/postrock pedals
Hahahah! Of course. You don't even have to try that hard 😂 This was just my preferred way to do it. For me personally it has a lot to do with the density of the different sounds. If you're using a really dense, saturated distortion (like the KMA Wurm in this video), then brighter and less diffused verbs tend to get me to where I want to go. But if I'm using a more open lower-gain dirt sound, then wonderful results can be achieved with murkier and diffused verbs. I'm really happy you enjoyed the video. Means a lot to me ❤
I'm glad you think it's so important. Personally I think reverb, the way it's used in this vid, is the most musically destructive effect I've ever heard.
wow this is awesome, right now i only have verb at the end of my board, but i agree with ya, it's the best effect of all. thanks for another amazing and informative video, man!
Thanks Stefan, so inspiring! I've been using a Kemper Profiler exclusively for FX up until recently when I started adding pedals that I found couldn't be replicated on the KPA. Your video made me realise that there might be more to experiment with on the Kemper playing with the order and different mix levels of various FX.
Great stuff as always Stefan. Yeah I've always been a reverb at the end guy, but lately, with all the incredible options for different reverb types, there's no reason to not have one at the start of my chain also!
Heather Moder 1 second ago Good to see you back man! Your stuff is top notch and so inspiring and helpful to me musically. Great info and hope you feel refreshed!
So now I know about Belton Brick reverbs and using multiple reverbs, nice one! Great video as ever, very inspiring, thanks for putting it out. Now I have to buy a Mercury 7 :)
I really appreciate all the examples! Phenomenal job showing that Reverb is probably the most dynamic effect there is. Might try to put the Slö at the beginning and the Fathom at the end? Plan on getting the Avalanche Run eventually because I really like how it pairs with Pyramids
I just got the Red Panda Particle V2. I put this in front of the effects loop chain. It seems to do a lot of what you're talking about. I have a Boss RV6 at the end. Your stuff is always so beautiful. Thanks!
I only have 1 reverb pedal, but I have 3 delay pedals in my chain, i might put my short tape delay pedal in front and see what happens. This video really has me thinking about the placement of all my delays!
Very interesting video!! I have two end of chain reverbs (Walrus Fathom and Walrus Slo), but after seeing this...I definitely want to look into a front of chain reverb that preferably has a freeze function.
Nice! Think you could achieve what you're after by moving the Slö to the front. But if you like that as an end-of-chain verb, then check out something like the OBNE Dark Star as an early-chain verb. It's just stellar for that job.
Wonderful demo of my favourite effect type! You know... I always watch your demos at least twice. First a quick look when you upload them and then when I have some relaxing time drinking some coffee or a beer I really enjoy them! For 100% wet, I always use the Avalanche run. For me it's the best reverb on this.
This video assumes we all have multiple reverbs and effect pedals just laying around. And you would be correct.
Yay! Reverb!
Such a great/funny comment :) because it’s so true
😂
😂
I have both the MS-50G and the MS-70CDR. Done! 😎👌
ThePedalZone: "This is Why you Need More Reverb"

Don’t forget about reverse reverb full wet for that MBV glide 😎 cool vid !
Indeed! Reverse reverb is fun. Just used it in my Keeley Loomer demo
I've always kept 'verb strictly at the end of my chain. Was really cool to hear all these different tones, great as always man!
Happy to hear the video was able to give you a new perspective on how to use reverb :)
This guy is my new favorite pedal guy. He's not only knowledgeable, he's also got a great vibe amd personality.

I didn't realize I needed a new distortion pedal, but that KMA Wurm has me feeling things.

Any modulation after reverb is killer, but yes, Chorus is indeed exceptionally great for it
Eyyyyye! Get my j Macsis Jazzmaster today. So excited. Great vid, love the tonal teamwork’s!
Sweeeet! It's a really great guitar. You're gonna love it. Happy you enjoyed the video!

Good to see you back man! Your stuff is top notch and so inspiring and helpful to me musically. Great info and hope you feel refreshed!
Love the quality and touch of humor. Great video Bro.
Thank you! Really appreciate that 🙏
So now I know about Belton Brick reverbs and using multiple reverbs, nice one!
Great video as ever, very inspiring, thanks for putting it out.
Now I have to buy a Mercury 7 :)
Superb demonstration of the variables and their results.
I’ve been in a creative rut for a bit but this just pulled me out of it. Thanks again Stefan
That's incredible to hear, man! Honored you found the video inspiring
Definitively, Inspiring. Thank you Stephan.
So happy to hear you enjoyed the video and found it inspiring 🙏
I really appreciate all the examples! Phenomenal job showing that Reverb is probably the most dynamic effect there is. Might try to put the Slö at the beginning and the Fathom at the end? Plan on getting the Avalanche Run eventually because I really like how it pairs with Pyramids
Trying the same two myself, are you liking that order? I just bought them so any suggestions would be accepted.
You never cease to amaze, Stefan, please keep up the great work!
Thank you so very much! Incredibly kind of you 🙏
I love reverb and this video is just so inspiring. Thank you, Stefan!
I use the strymon nightsky, then the timeline and then the bigsky. How crazy this sounds together. Plus on the iridium you have room reverb
I love this style of tips and tricks videos. I've been thinking a lot about pre-gain delays and you gave me some ideas on what to try :D
That's awesome, man! Early chain delays are cool to experiment with as well.
Dark Star>Aqueduct>Mercury was goddamn gorgeous. Gonna be switching around all my reverbs tonight
Thanks, man! I was really pleased with that combination as well. Means a lot that you found it inspiring and helpful ❤
Nice to have you back! Now I can just get cozy and enjoy your music!
Oh man I think I have seven reverb pedals already. I love reverb so much.
Can never have too many reverb pedals 😊
I just did the double reverb with my iPad apps with modulations & reverse delay. Wow!
Awesome!! Sounds like you're having a lot of fun with these ideas and concepts 😊
This was fantastic, truly magical sounds. Thanks Stefan.
Thank you! I'm really happy you enjoyed the tones
Very nice. Thanks for sharing your tips. I'll try this with the limited pedals / gear that I have and possibly even in Ableton with VSTs as well.
I play bass, instead of guitar, but this gives me some fantastic ideas! Thank you!! Great video
Rad! I'm sure you'll make some earth-shakingly awesome bass-scapes 😊
