Super critical, must have skill to avoid those long WOS or POS (Walk or Paddle Of Shame). Thanks for the tips! I still have some friends that are having issues with this procedure. You da man!
Thank you, Highrocker! I probably focus too much on upwind sailing, but I think that has a lot to do with my own personal trauma my first few times out with the wing lol A more detailed schlogging upwind video to follow but, in the meanwhile, I hope this breakdown can help your pals out!
Lol, I paddled several kilometers in total during a single day yesterday! :) it is indeed Paddle of Shame! It used to be quite windy but as it was my second session I only learned how to move downwind, thus I paddled all the day like crazy. 😅 Can't wait to get back to the water. Thanks for this perfect explanation! My arms hurts so much now that I know exactly what I'll be practicing the next 😂
Most important lesson of the day after learning what you showed them is to not bother going out again in such light conditions, cannot progress any further.
Unfortunately, this was the clip I had to work with. Also, going upwind in light wind is actually a pretty critical skill in these parts (inland desert reservoir). You are correct, though; it took me a whole season to figure out that if there isn't enough wind to fly the wing, don't even bother. Just sit on the board, work on your tan, and wait it out for a breeze to get you back home (hopefully on foil, but even off-foil) rather wasting energy holding the wing up.
Hey Daniel. The board we were both riding in the video was her Lahoma inflatable wingboard with a full foil underneath (I know b/c I lent it to them). I have seen a tiny few people here trying to learn on SUPs with fins, but I always discourage that. It's better than nothing, but not much better lol
like others have said, it's almost impossible to go upwind or anywhere if there isn't enough wind to at least float the wing. You did great with what you had to work with. I made this video a few days bac on the same subject. ruclips.net/video/DrlLZGeyFxk/видео.html You need to generate some board speed to enable the mast to give you lateral resistance. Once you're moving you can rotate your body upwind wind and pull in slightly with your backhand. I would also say that kneeling on the board is going to be a lot more comfortable than squatting.
Great videos. I am day two on the water so really good info. Getting upwind is a challenge. I also will be trying the squat start. Thanks!
needed this video today. thanks for such a detailed breakdown and analysis
Ben and Anna this has to be one of the best videos I have seen to help beginners to learn to maneuver the board upwind. Congratulations to both of you
Thank you for viewing and the kind words!! Hopefully, you guys can be out on the water at the same time soon!

Yes but at least he won’t have to chase her too far! Good lesson.

To go upwind you need to have wind. This is the most important
Good point, although being able to go upwind in very light wind is a good skill to have (especially here)
Is the board Anna was using a sup with a foil or just a sub with a fin?

@@awkwanice tutorial. as a beginner, is it okay to just keep my goofy stance going upwind and downwind?
What size wing are you using? 5m?
When I was demonstrating, I was borrowing their 6m, whereas Anna was using their 4m

I am trying to turn my iSup into a wind-sup, by adding some sort of ventral fin to reduce drift, anyone tried the same with any success?
