CLIP DESCRIPTION:
During a peaceful prisoner exchange, Benjamin (Mel Gibson) recognizes Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs), as the man who murdered his son, and the two officers have a tete-a-tete.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.

“He can’t be touched” I like that General O’Hara obeys the rules of war and chivalry here. An English gentleman in a war.
I think everyone in the entire 'meeting' scene was great. Respect given and civility by two heavily opposed leaders.
@@picallo1 well said
Cornwallis and O'Hara looks more civilized than Tavington.
They accepted Martin for meet with them to their place.
Rofl... "An English gentleman in a war". That only exists in fictions like this movie.
@@miraakdovahkin6878 During colonial times it was actually quite common. Officers were meant to uphold 'honorable' combat. Not allow executions, brutality etc. Which is why Mel Gibsons character is upset, they werent doing that.
"Stay that sword Colonel!" Best voice ever!

it literally took me almost 20yrs to figure out what he said, lol
Ha I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
That actor was brilliant in this scene
It’s actually SHEATH that sword colonel
That part had me laughing he was so calm then immediately is yelling at him to put his sword away 😂
“You know, it’s an ugly business doing one’s duty, but just occasionally, it’s a real pleasure”. That line right there deserves an Oscar. That is bone chilling
I would have said something similar; not because I meant it but because I know it would provoke, and that's what Tavington was after.
Nothing about this movie was Oscar worthy. Let us be realistic here.
@@cuylshepherdton7437 yeah it was not historically accurate but there was some nice eye candy, aka Jason Isaacs.

Jason Isaacs is an incredibly underrated actor. He would have been a great Bond.

I love when the General YELLS at Tavington "Stay that sword Colonel"...LOVE IT
That was always one of my favorite parts too.. the dude played the part of an officer who was used to having his orders obeyed without question to perfection.. He looked awfully pissed at even having to explain himself to the Colonel, even though he didn't have to.
Plus i love it how the British officers were civilized even in the presence of an adversary. Gentlemanly warfare right there.
When?
Actually it is "Sheath your sword Colonel" Sheath means cover or case for a blade. The word is noun and verb.
@@marcmauhay the last remnants of the mercenary code and the Laws of War
Most of the time in movies they would deliver that line like, “Before this war is over *dramatic pause* I’m going to kill you.” But Benjamin just states it plainly, casual, and with conviction. He’s not trying to scare Tavington, he’s just giving him the facts. Powerful.
Indeed. Kinda like in Gladiator where Maximum tells Commodus he will have his vengeance in this life or the next.

I don’t think I’ve ever hated a villain in a movie this much in my life. Jason Isaacs did a fantastic job. I wanted to jump inside of the screen and jam his eyes in.
He, Kevin Bacon in Sleepers and Kurtwood Smith in Robocop.
I wanted to jump inside the screen and do........ something else with Jason Isaacs! Hahaha.

deliberately thinking of the most enraging and offensive statement he could possibly make. Mel didn't initially respond or turn around when he called to him, so he decided to get really vicious to provoke a response
@@stonem0013and what a response he got! One that came true too!
It's an excellent line from the hero of the film, a proud man doing what must be done.
1:14 I love the way that Gibson turns and cants his head as in "are you serious?!" Jason Isaac's and Gibson crushed the acting in the film.
yeah I like his expression, it's not anger or hatred, it's more like annoyance
I love how Tavington was trying to provoke Martin into doing something stupid, but Martin knew his game and kept his cool. Amazing acting!
He wanted him to take the bait so he could kill him but Martin was too smart for that
Brits get mad at this movie but it rly only portrays Tavington as evil, the other Brits either don't like him or aren't down with his tactics
Jason Isaacs should have been up for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his amazing performance in the Patriot.
Agreed and I wonder why he wasn't nominated because he would have won that award.
Probably because it happened in a Rowland-Emmerick film.
Who did he play?
yeah, Jason Isaacs is really a great actor. But, I believe he is too short in his height. English thing, I guess?????
@@rachelsheppard9122 Uhhh, no. Not even close.

😂😂😂😂😂
Lol
"Stay that sword, Colonel!"
Love that delivery
Loved O'Hara in this scene! The way he says "He has shown no aggression here" always struck me as his way of telling Tavington 'Try me, boy!'
When Tavington yells at Martin's back, "YOU! You're the ghost, are you? I remember you!" General O'Hara looks at Tavington like, "What on earth is he doing????"
@lindaoneil5085 I think he was wanting a gun or saber duel.
@@aaroncampbell2180 I think Tavington was trying to provoke Martin into doing something foolish with all those redcoats around. Tavington did taunt Martin by saying, "On that farm, with that stupid little boy!" before Martin turns around to confront him.
After he softly says “ soon”...
The look of pure madness & vengeance within Benjamin Martins eyes.... excellent scene. One of many in this movie.
Jason Isaacs should have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Col. Tavington.
That's true! He's the reason why I loved this movie! He evil and attractive the same time.
That was funny part in the movie! Cornwallis is always shouting at Tavington. 😂😂
Jason is once said in a interview, that he was taller than Mel. But Mel told him that he should be taller than him cause he's the bad guy. 😁😁 shows that these two actors had good chemistry off camera.
@@divdivassassin7076 Hence your name.
@@divdivassassin7076 Mel is about 5'8" so not so tall anyway. Many would be taller.
One of the best parts about this scene is that the line "why wait" along with the "soon" response were completely improvised. The scene was supposed to end on "before this war is over I'm going to kill you," but Jason Isaacs reasoned that given Tavington's role & background (not to mention the lines of redcoats at his back) he wouldn't have been afraid of Martin at all, much less silenced by his threat. So he continued to try and provoke, resulting in a very nice moment of contemplation from Gibson before his final reply.
Another good thing about it is that death stare that Gibson throws right before turning away. It's blink-and-you'll-miss-it, but it's pure genius.
@@XanderVJ That death stare reminded me of "Braveheart"...he must have used it in that film, somewhere.
Awesome performance by both veteran actors...
That dialogue between them had almost unbearable tension
@@XanderVJ yes! Love it.
Another great detail about this scene is that Jason Isaacs was very self-conscious of the fact that he was taller than Mel Gibson, and tried digging a ditch in the ground between takes. Mel caught him and said "What are you doing? You're the bad guy. You're supposed to be bigger than me."
1:46 love love LOVE this little detail right here. You can tell he's thinking "why not?." I've lost everything, I've lost my wife, my son, my home, all because of THIS man right here...you can see he wanted to...but he didn't, he waited until the right moment to fulfill his desire. Love this part, and Gibson is an incredible actor.
Eh, his wife died before the Revolution
Tavington had nothing to do with his wife's death. And he hasn't lost everything because three of his sons are still alive at this point.
@@Electricshrock yes, but he clearly had an immense desire to attack this man in this moment after he murdered his son and then boasted about enjoying it.
It's not explained why his wife died, but it was most likely in childbirth or disease
I just love that moment where Gibson walks away from him and opens his eyes wide, just for a milisecond. You can just sense the rage that he is holding back in that quick glare.
Exactly what I was thinking! Mel's facial expressions are what I enjoy about this actor. Brings much more to his roles with this than a lot of other actors.
Gibson was always a boss
@@renekackline2377 very true. I love this about his playing. But Jason Isaacs is also very good at this that's why I love dialogues between them in this movie, there is going so much on in their eyes and face. Brilliant acting.
He had that same glare in "Braveheart".
"Did he die?" best line delivery by Jason Isaacs ever!
Ikr, I love him
Jason Isaacs for a bond villain would be perfect.
I though Mr.Potter will be there to save the day was the best line I think I wrote the Rival line for it
Nikki Williams And for a cobra villain too that he could pull it off as Major Bludd from G.I. Joe.

I loved Jason Isaacs performance as the antagonist in this film. Whereas Mel Gibson is just a fantastic actor and he was brilliant in this film as well. Loved the exchange of dialogues between Benjamin Martin and Colonel Tavington❤️
0:37 the moment you realize the actor playing the general is almost guaranteed to be a highly accomplished singer in real life
Went to see this movie initially to see Mel....Completely forgot about him when I saw Jason. What a man....
I first watched this movie when I was in 8th grade and Jason Issacs' character was my favorite. His performance in this movie is fantastic and it's the main reason I re-watch this movie to this day.
Absolutely love how he whistles for the dogs knowing Cornwallis can’t do anything about it! Also, you can tell that O’Hara has a distaste for Col. Tavington. Even in the deleted scenes you can tell he disapproves of how he acts.
Tavington's fellow officers disliked him also; they didn't talk to him, and regarded him with contempt whenever he walked into a gathering of officers. By Tavington's brutality toward the civilian population, he was giving his fellow brothers-in-arms a bad reputation, which they did not appreciate.
And how Tavington acted was grounds for a court martial or a gun duel to restore the honor of the army.
There is so many unique things about Jason issacs. He's voice, acting, aperiance, and talent.
His dogs running out the gate is truly a feel good moment.
Some talk of Alexander
Some talk of Hercules,
of Hector and Lysander
and such great names as these.
I laughed so hard when the dogs came running
As the old saying goes:"They knew what side their "Bread" was buttered on! By then, they'd come to absolutely adore this very honorable American! They refused to leave his side! They were, as Canines go, the total expression and proof of loyalty and love to their new Master!
Jason Isaacs has always been impressive. I was hoping that he would be tapped to play Grand Admiral Thrawn for any live-action version of that character in Star Wars, personally.
OOoh he would be perfect for that role!
He can't, he's already the voice of the Grand Inquisitor
At 1:14 when Gibson turns around whit that grin, and confident look on his face...
My eyes are teary by laughing...
How the dogs follow his whistle !😂😂😂😂
He got his prisoners, fooled enemy by giving them "Straw Prisoners Officers " in exchange...
And he took the beloved dogs of General 😄😄...
A treat to watch...
The “why wait” line is the most badass of the scene.
I would say "Before this war is over I am going to kill you" is the most badass line of the scene. The confidence in his voice was incredible, and he did end up killing him right before the war ended.

I just love they obey the rules and honor regarding a gentleman and civilized behavior.

I loved that line
There is really special about the way Jason Isaac talks when he acts, his does not move his mouth much but i can feel the intensity. Same with his role at Harry Potter.
Jason Issacs just excels in these roles 🤣
I have long feared that my sins would come to visit me and the cost is more than I can bear.
I told God to forgive me of my sins so your not alone.
Jason isaacs single most underrated villain actor of all time
The sheer amount of evil you could feel in issac's on-screen presence is simply unmatched, strongly deserved a oscar for his role in this film.
That's historically accurate though
I love how he delivers, "did he die?" So nonchalant.
Seriously Jason Isaacs stole so many scenes in presence he was in such a great actor!
The Brits were quite honourable in this scene, honouring parley and releasing the prisoners as agreed and Benjamin Martin goes and stabs them in the back.....
This was after Cornwallis had reprimanded Tavington for his "brutal tactics" saying to him "history judges us not only on the outcome of the war, but the manner in which it was fought."
Almost feel bad for the British.
The art of war: "You mistify, mislead and Surprise the enemy?" And the Americans are darn good at it.
Yeah, he did that because the British didn't recognize the militia folks as POWs, but as war criminals that were going to be executed. Bravo on Tavington tricking the British to free his men!
I would have loved to have watched Jason Isaacs as James Bond.
I think he wouldve smashed it as a bond, he carries himself, a bit like tim dalton.
“You know, it’s an ugly business doing one’s duty. But just occasionally, it’s a bit of a pleasure.”
Jason Isaacs is an ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL Big Bad villain! Terrific scene!
No one is mentioning the glimpse of crazy in Gibson's eyes right before he turns around?
That fire in his eyes after he says "soon," right before he turns away...marking
One of the greatest villains ever. Jason Isaacs should have won an Oscar for best supporting actor. It’s a crime he wasn’t even nominated.
I love Jason Isaacs. A very underrated actor.
Benjamin is such a great character. He shows great forbearance here despite his terrible loss and Tavington's taunt on top of it.
No doubt he would make good on his promise to kill Tavington, and I like how he states it matter-of-factly, like it was a certain event.
I know this movie has some serious faults, but if we can look past them it's an incredibly moving and inspiring story. Not usual for the hero to lose two of their kids, but it's important here as it conveys how the stakes were high for Americans.
Tavington is a incredible villain, truly cold hearted, but Jason Isaacs makes him so interesting somehow... the audience is transfixed. Such a great actor in anything he does.
The level of rage he has where it looks like calm should scare any man. The Colonel knowing what he took from him, pushing those buttons and only seeing him choose his words collectedly with no fluctuation in his tone and for it not even make him flinch when spoken. Those are two men who have mastered hatred.
Incredible scene between two men on opposing sides of the war of independence. One staring at the other. Calmly stating he will kill him soon enough. The way he said it truly was very convincing that he meant it. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨
1:13...I always like how Mel turns around and he’s like “why you gotta say that”.
It reminds me of the original Batman turn
did anyone else notice that split second of crazy eye mel gibson gives right before he walks away? i literally just noticed that
I liked some of the fighting in this film, especially that one scene where Gibson went to down on the British with a tomahawk.
I don't care what anyone says about Mel Gibson, this movie is a masterpiece.
"Stay that sword Colonel!"
I’ve always thought that actor Peter Woodward who portrayed Charles O’Hara in the film had a regal, posh and aristocratic British accent. Nobody, not even the Queen speaks or enunciates English in such a proper way as he does.
"Queen" being your boyfriend, correct?
I will have to look at that movie again. Did not notice but i was pretty young at the time

The eyes when he says “soon” almost seem like he’s fantasizing about the terrible things Ben could do in an instant. Like a sense of love for the mental torture he just laid out. Mel is a hell of an actor.
It's sad how the dogs run off lol. That was actually a genuine and beautiful gesture of respect between enemies to return them which Cornwallis appreciated but then running off ruins it.
Cornwallis was intelligent and it can be assumed that in that moment he at least suspected for the first time that he'd been had.
One of the favorite movies of my childhood, along with True Lies, Bloodsport and Delta Force 2.
I love this movie and this scene. One of the best villains ever.

I never noticed the tightening of Gibson's eyes after he says "soon". It's like he's seriously contemplating killing the guy right then and there.
I just love the moment when the British generals face look so angry when the dogs were running away ....
The dogs are the stars in this clip. 😆
Interesting part I just noticed, Tavington exhales ever so slightly after Benjamin turns around and leaves
