I”ll never forget watching this scene in high school where everyone, especially the boys, were cheering for Atticus to just punch that douchbag after everything he’s done. But when Atticus cleaned his face, glared at Bob Ewell, and walked away without never losing his dignity, the whole class was in awe for how cool Atticus made it look. To defeat someone without throwing any punches. Atticus Finch, you truly earned your place in the American Film Institute’s #1 Hero.

@@vgg31 totally agree with you there. I think Bob Ewell just wanted to provoke Atticus enough that he'd stoop to Bob's level and spitting in someone's face is about the lowest thing you can do. I've had the same happen to me when I used to work in customer service this dirty bastard spat in my face over something trivial and my reaction was like a bomb going off and acting dignified went out the window!! I won't repeat the language I used but the air was blue! The guy legged it as soon as I went to come out from behind the counter and he's lucky the door was locked because me unlocking it gave him time to run and get away. Had I got my hands on him it would have been a murder scene. It's the most disgusting thing ever to have someone spit in your face it really shows their contempt for people when you cross that line and go that low.

Atticus would have broken Bob Ewell in half .

Atticus could've have flattened Bob Ewell with a single slap. You can see for a moment that he wanted to, and cowardly Bob sensed this. That Atticus held back says everything about the strength of his character.

I remember watching this scene in class and when Bob spat in Atticus' face, I said out loud "That's just disrespectful" and my teacher was like "You're right." THE DISCUSSION AFTERWARDS THO!!! Everyone was upset that he didn't knock him out but we understood why he didn't and we all agreed that spitting on someone is beyond disrespectful and to flinch after you do it is a cowardly move.

Atticus is amazing. When I read the book, I was more on empathizing the kids more. I know how Atticus was, but seeing the movie helped me grasp him better. After getting a little older, I feel like I could get his perspective better. That one saying about understanding others by walking in their shoes may be a part of it, but with age.

I didn't like him, but I hated Frank Bennet in Fried Green Tomatoes even more. Supposedly, the actor (Nick Searcy) isn't much different from the part he played. Maybe, that is the reason why he played the role so well.
