I just quit my job earlier today. It was a good job, high salary, my results were always on top and I’ve worked my way up and was part of the group of leaders. But yeah, I quit - and it feels GREAT!
Thanks for commenting Miso, that gave me a notification that sent me back to this old comment! A year has gone by since I quit and I actually ended up starting my own business! I am so damn proud of myself!
Congratulations Christie! Really great insights here. "Constantly working in a 'survival mode' environment is at best uninspiring, and at worst exhausting. The hard truth is that many organizations operate in survival mode."
This made me cry. But I’ve learned a great deal from this and now have the power and courage to walk away from a toxic work environment that I refused to leave for the illusion of financial stability and safety. Thank you for this.
Wow. She just described the reason why i left my job. I felt great knowing that i am not the only one in the whole world who despite being good at my work, chose to leave. But,i am glad that i made such a decision.
True absolutely agree, I quit my job for the same reason. I was not valued nor respected in my job, I called it quits, enough is enough, can't take it anymore, can't work in a toxic place anymore.
I absolutely cannot stand my job. I’ve done it for over 10 years and it’s always been horrible. The human mind/body can truly withstand a lot. I’m getting ready to put my notice in and it will be one of the happiest days of my life.
Where you able to quit ? Same boat I’ve only been here for about a year and I’m already to check out there’s no way I’ll be able to stay any longer I’m just tired and burnt out bad
@@SharlenesJourney Yes, I was able to quit and I am glad I did, but I had been suffering from clinical burnout for quite some time before I quit. I honestly have no idea if or when I'll ever be able to go back to work. The best advice I could give someone is to leave as soon as a job starts getting bad. It will never get better and just continue to get worse. Prioritize your health and quit right away. Do not wait until you're suffering from burnout because you may never fully recover. It's an uphill battle and all for a paycheck.... what a waste. I wish I could go back in time and quit sooner or have never even worked there to begin with.
@@Pikachyu13 i quit without having a secured job to go to,but that was ok with me because i needed some time for me to work out and ease my mind.A construction job that i had about 5 years ago took me back within 12 hours of me contacting them 😊 i am better in all aspects at this point.
@@armand0reyna456 now that's what I like to hear!! I keep reading "don't quit your job without another lined up" "it's a red flag" "dont have gaps" but no one considers the environment being super bad and taking a toll on the employees mental health. I would love to do what you did, but I've only worked retail and all environments have not been the greatest sadly... I'll keep looking, but thanks for the small, unintentional encouragement!! 😊
Employees and leaders is not the same as employees and “bosses.” Not all bosses are leaders. When no one leads, that’s when a work environment becomes toxic.
Got that right...it is the person that makes the position, rather than the position making the person. Positional leadership is the weakest form of leadership (if it is leadership at all)
I stumbled upon most of these comments and these are the signs that I asked for, I think. I'm so burned out now with my job and sometimes I don't know if I'm still doing the right thing for myself. But more and more, it makes me realize that I'm causing more damage than doing good to myself by still pushing even when I'm too exhausted. God, I wish I had all the courage you guys have. 😭
Become good at what you do. After that you will quit all the time and opportunities will keep coming. Learners or half skilled people will have a harder time quitting.
Often times I've quit a "good job" because of a subversive co worker who finds ways to covertly bully me. Talented people don't need jobs that enable less experienced, less talented employees who don't deserve the job in the first place to harass people who are worth more money value wise.
After 3 long months of desperately searching I finally found a new job and put in my 2 weeks. This is the worst job I’ve ever had in my entire life. Horrible culture and leadership that sees us as machines and not people with families or emergencies. We had every type of disrespect and neglect you can think of. Health code violations, paychecks always wrong, scheduling errors, no benefits, no PTO, retaliation for calling off, working people 24 hours. We had a new supervisor every month or 3. It was awful. I was depressed for so long. I stopped eating and felt sick every day. Please quit a bad job, it’s not worth your health and peace. Great video Asè
When you are the star performer, management gets the bonuses not you. They push you harder and harder to produce the numbers and you just get so stressed out you hit a brick wall exhaused wondering "why am i doing this?" I'm not going to get a bonus or even more than a 15 cent raise for the year. But your boss is happy cause he got the $500 bonus on his next check not you.
You just described working for companies where the cashiers have to sell credit cards. I work for a company like that and doing that makes me wanna wish for a nuclear winter. I hate it with a burning passion! It is one of the reasons I want to quit!
I straight up quit my job today 🤷🏾♀️. I just dont feel like a fit and nor do i like the feeling of being trapped. I feel like I deserve better and I rather wait until I find my CAREER where I dont feel trapped
I am about to quit my job because I can't stand it anymore. 1 month left. Before I'm quitting, I have plan everything, start to doing my own business. Wish that I can be successful and I wish every broken people who read this also become successful. 🙏🙏🙏
I quit my job for mental health reasons. I got great feedback from clients and colleagues. I was being paid reasonably well. In the end, there were too many broken promises. I knew I deserved more and I was never going to get it. I had to see other (less competent) people get promotions because of their connections. The atmosphere was also toxic. I left and have no idea when I will be able to get a job that pays anywhere near as much. But...I had to do it.
And there I was beating myself down for having quit top positions over and over, again. Glad I stumbled upon this, and the list that follows. Thanks TedEx Christie Lindor, thank you for your message.
but who ever created workplace 2.0 doesn't understand that people need their personal space to thrive and do their best creative work in an office. It's that lack of cubicle or office space that makes me want to leave my job because they think we will be more collaborative. Let me tell you … I do a great job without my next cubicle mate rambling on in my face about her work or babbling on the phone all day to colleagues.
Exactly that's one more reason i quit cz taking away our cubes and personal space and privacy making a giant open floor plan...especially during covid?
I’m so glad I stumbled across the TED talk. I am a female automotive technician. I rebuild transmissions. I have worked hard to learn what I have and to get to where I am now. I currently work for someone who micromanages everything I do. Nothing is ever good enough. I feel as though he is always looking for something I’ve done wrong and never notices all of the things I do right. One minute everything is fine and my boss and I are extremely close, the next minute he can be having a bad day and decide to take it out on me. I know that I am a good employee, I just feel like I am drained and have anxiety about going to work.
I know how You feel, I quitted because I Made so many extra hours to hand over projects or reports needed but it was never enough and there were always claims like this was suposed to be ready yesterday, this was had to be ready at 5 not at 7, I gave My very Best and sacrified Even weekends, I had just enough
Most leaders I have met are beyond clueless when it comes to what their employees think/want etc....but then again it is the employees job to find a leader that they identify with.
Date: May 26,2021 I hope that I can quit my job and I don’t just want to quit I want to walk away from the 9-5 for good. I am just tired and burnt out I’ve had enough. I am not getting anywhere in life. In return I’m just becoming more and more burnt out and drained. I’m praying I can escape these handcuffs. I wasn’t put on this earth to be someone else’s employee I want to be my own boss 💯
I am here because I will be quitting my PhD (which is fully funded scholarship and also highly paid which is extremely hard to come by) because the working culture is very toxic. I know I can find something even better that will make me much happier in the future. It might take a while but i have to believe in myself
Most leader today doesn't know how to lead. The wrong people are getting promoted. If your good at your job, you get overloaded with the expectation of doing your job and most of someone else's. No appreciation, little to no raises or bonus and in my case asked to continue working at this high level at a lower salary, then reading that upper level managers got huge pay increases. I QUIT! Thank You but no Thank You. As a company they talked about all the things she mentioned but it was only talk!
You are right! a lot of corporations say they are here for the employees and appreciate all we do but the actions are opposite. more tasks less pay and less flexibility becomes the norm. They treat you like a machine. Was told by a boss, people leave companies because they are impatient. NOT true! ppl leave when they stop growing and feel stuck but the company refuses to promote or create more opportunities. ppl will go where they are valued! only way to grow in today's world is to move companies
True, one supervisor of mine is lazy and useless at work and the other supervisor I work with recently is good and helpful to me, always assist me when I need help and I’m still new to the store
I was teaching on a permanent position in a state university for two decades. The toxic work enivronment, like the one elucidated by Christie, affected both my mental and physical health and my family life. Quit it couple of months back despite a decade left and I needed the job so much.
This lady described the company i just quit to a T!...toxic environment, lack of leadership. Bullying, and no room for advancement for hard work...i found a new company that all the employees respect the owners and was welcoming to me when i joined the team... it was a very very strussful time for me to decide to quit after 7 years of loyalty that they did not apreciate...glad i built up the courage to leave that toxic environment with no future!
It took a few years to dawn on me. My headache wasn't time sensitive, it was location sensitive. No matter which shift, it started about 5 miles before work and ended 5 miles after.
I quit my last job because of this exact reason. One day I walked into to work and I just couldn't take it anymore. So I quit without notice, yikes! Not the smartest move but I had enough... Looking back the only thing I regret about leaving that job was not giving proper notice. As after taking a break i am now looking to getting back in the job market and i am a bit worried as to how this will affect my job search. Wish me luck everyone:)
Giving notice would apply to an individual working in a position in a thriving culture. When the culture is brutal, toxic, rude, and uncaring-- you don't owe them one more second of the goodness that makes you a fabulous person. Pack your personal belongings and just politely excuse yourself. The freedom begins the moment you're no longer enslaved within toxicity!
Me too without notice and the leader and visor is not even bother to message me after that hahhha that's why it's not worth working in company where you don't feel anything but tiredness
The 8 to 5 office concept is obsolete. Too many wasteful meetings, too much chit chat, too many phone calls and too many interruptions. Not adding the long commutes to the equation. People become zombies desperate for distractions and thus learn to put up in a toxic environment. Life could be simpler but there will always be a few to ruin for the rest unfortunately.
Yes this my job has turned into zoom meetings everyday. Even in the meetings I have checked out they say things but I’m not even listening. Work just feels like a place of stress it’s not the same anymore. So much micromanagement and unnecessary workload and long hours. It’s too much to handle and I don’t want to be part of that lifestyle .
Some leaders in the companies, believes the more you talk, the more you get reward. Coz of this, hard working employees get depressed and decide to walk out the door. But guess what, after they left the company, leaders recognized and remember them every day and also they learn the talky people have no values to the company, which is too late! thanks for the post. Jhoni from IBM Texas
I quit my job which paid me well , job i loved most cause it allows me to put my ideas into action .but the culture of the company slowly kills me. until i can no longer bear it. i was crying almost daily, i cant sleep anymore.
I could have written your comment. I am very close to quitting now. Did you get happier once you quit? Whenever I am ready to make the move, I think that maybe things will change and get better...
@@hananalshameri2050 It was worth it because it helped me get of my anger and my stress. I am much happier and more confident and I sleep better and don't overeat or drink since I left the toxic job. There is no regrets of course, but you have to be prepared financially. I had to use some savings and my new job does not pay as much. You might have to rework your budget until you obtain a high paying job but the health benefits are priceless. Good luck!
My previous manager's leadership made me feel like I had the best job ever. His successor makes it feel like the worst job ever. We went from a culture with a flat hierarchy, open collaboration, and endless possibilities, to small, isolated silos, with the new manager creating a foggy, chaotic, goose chase where the focus of everything seems to be his needs before even the clients. It is shockingly difficult to get anything done in his image.
I just filed my resignation letter today. 5 years here and I have not been promoted and recognized by the management. I'll showcase what I can offer to a different company who will appreciate me.
I’m working in a very busy restaurant to pay off my university debts. I’ve had people try to bully me and bring me down constantly but I’ve pushed through all the bull**** and I’ve now gone from bar work to full time server, which I make more money from tips. I’m using this as a survival job but I know I need to leave at some point to pursue what I really want to do. It’s making that decision to leave, I’ve never worked in a more f****** up work environment with such toxic people who have been given supervisor and assistant manager jobs. It’s really effected me mentally and I’ve burnt out. It doesn’t matter how strong you may think you are, a toxic work environment and gang mentality can really mess you up. I know I need to get out but watching this talk has really clarified what I’ve been thinking the past few months.
Christie , thank you. I’ve been in insecure job positions, yet, on average, and now, I’ve mostly been in positions of more empowerment. Your messages resonates with both facets: my insecure, impostors-syndrome self, and my “I can, have a voice here” This is a great message to get through. Thank you
In the process now of leaving a 'good job' and going independent. Going to send this video to the company CAO on my last day lol. This is totally bang on
Thank you for this Christie! I experienced extreme burnout as an employee last year that, others on the outside thought I had the perfect job (the pay, the title, etc.), but being the overachiever I am and my drive to learn and teach others and make a difference was such a passion, the environment I found myself in was detrimental to my health and sanity. I was stuck in a dysfunctional toxic and non-directional environment, and I felt hopeless that I couldn't solve everyone's problems (because I was known for fixing anything!)......I was forced to take the burden of others who refused to do more than the bare minimum, and although had the "title" to make a difference, was not supported to enforce nor encourage change for the better.... I no longer loved my job, lost all hope and confidence.... and I could no longer work in that type of environment... I have to have purpose and see direction, drive, and support of those I am to be working with or answering to. I am still in recovery from the PTSD it caused, and I am starting my own business so I get to choose who I will work with and the culture I allow around me.
I honestly feel like there SHOULDNT be a culture. It feels fake, cringe, and it just feels so forced. My current job is just simple. I am trusted to do my job, no quota, no deadlines. They trust in me, don’t manage me at all, and I in turn do honest work. I honestly think that my job just put so much thought and time into who they hire, that they know 100% how that person will work that it works so well.
Yes, you do have a point. I currently work on a corporate which have a cringe & fake culture. There are intercom emails almost every month to reminds about the company's value, even forced to follow their social medias where the posts are the company's value again. It's so boring and rigid.
I am just tired of the 9-5, petty managers and people. Been there and done that with the career ladder and I found that the view is not that great, in spite of the money.
I love the view on work culture. Oh yes, that description is spot on. I’ve done some demeaning work; yet have found myself happy at the end of the day due to work culture. And have had jobs that should be dreams come true being the exact opposite. All due to culture. Culture is how you keep me at least.
omg the thing she asked to imagine is exactly what i am going experiecing. My boss is great and supportive, not riff with colleagues, im really good at my job and my boss and other superiors knows it and still i feel like quitting. I am actually and omg the points she says so validate me. Thank you for taking the time to figure this out and sharing with the world. We need to know what is the problem so we can have a solution.
There is a big lie that everybody can be replaced. Managers and executives use that tool as a contingency for staff turnover. I agree that you could replace anyone but I don’t believe that there is no loss in doing so. A good performing vested employee it’s an asset for the company no matter how you look at it. If you bring a new one I don’t care that they come in from Harvard or Oxford. You will need to invest money in training and getting them to the level of the person that you lost.
I work in outsourcing company and I really felt every word of this speech. Planning to quit soon without any job lined up because I can't go on like this anymore. Hoping for the net to appear!
3:00 - this is a brilliant comparison... A company culture conveys information just like DNA in a body. Talk about an "ah ha!" moment... incredibly and unavoidably true. Awesome talk!
Well done to Christie Lindor for delivering such a well organized speech. I watched it twice and I did not see even for one second she made a mistake. I agree that the company culture is set by employers and must be regulated by leaders. By position, I am a manager, but in reality I am just a super staff. I really wish that my employers understand the concept that we need to evolve in order to step out from the survival mode. I know that old fashioned semi dictatorial boss-staff relationship works. But, it is such a stressful relationship especially for the subordinates. Some people needs room to grow, and some happy with the routine. I need to grow.
I work in medical and have for over 11 years. I am sick of it. I am at risk of getting called at any time. I have given it a good run, but this is the year something changes. I'm sick of dying inside every time my phone rings or a new policy comes out.

When one door closes, you will find another one opens. Sometimes the hardships you may come across going through this transition can be a moment to reflect on yourself and your overall situation. Never give up. You will be just fine in the end. Nothing feels better than to tell your supervisors, to go fu©k themselves. Something we all want to do, but suppress on a daily basis. About to apply for a new job for the same reasons. We are not alone.
Never take a job, just because of the money. Lesson learned.
100%.
Better to live within your means.
I’m learning this right now
5:56 The main reason that a poor leader might encourage mediocre performance is that he (rightly) sees top achievers as a threat to his authority.

Im about to quit too this week

@@armand0reyna456 did you have another job lined up before you left? Or did you do an intensive job search while unemployed?
I was in the same predicament on my last job a n d see it happening at my current job
Got that right...it is the person that makes the position, rather than the position making the person. Positional leadership is the weakest form of leadership (if it is leadership at all)
This is the reason why I have 3 more days left, I felt so happy and full of life after giving notice! Spot on explanation 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Currently planning on leaving my job because of this. Our leaders don’t lead and I can’t stand behind them anymore.
I left my job which I loved, and was great at it, because of company's culture.
This is what’s happening to me now

Excellent eloquent presentation. I quit my job recently and this video serves as a confirmation from the universe that I made an excellent decision.
They push you harder and harder to produce the numbers and you just get so stressed out you hit a brick wall exhaused wondering "why am i doing this?" I'm not going to get a bonus or even more than a
15 cent raise for the year. But your boss is happy cause he got the $500 bonus on his next check not you.
That's what I'm going through right now.
That’s why I resigned last Friday.....
This was/is a great talk. Ms Lindor has nailed down to core issue in many organizations.
I am about to quit my job because I can't stand it anymore. 1 month left. Before I'm quitting, I have plan everything, start to doing my own business. Wish that I can be successful and I wish every broken people who read this also become successful. 🙏🙏🙏
I just sent my resignation letter today. Praying for your success!
@@librarosas1105 I hope you'll be success too😊
I quit my job for mental health reasons.
This sounds very similar to my situation.
I did the same thing today. I want to focus on my business and goals
LEAVE YOUR JOBS AND PURSUE YOUR DREAMS! JOBS ARE ONLY TEMPORARY STEPPING STONES. YOU ARE NOT ASSETS!
And there I was beating myself down for having quit top positions over and over, again.
Glad I stumbled upon this, and the list that follows.
Thanks TedEx
Christie Lindor, thank you for your message.
but who ever created workplace 2.0 doesn't understand that people need their personal space to thrive and do their best creative work in an office.
Am going through a job with a challenging culture. Am resigning and this video has helped..thanks
Know your worth , look for another job more pay and your worth.
Oh my god . The best analysis I've ever heard about good people quit job. Thanks so much for that video.
Of course Psychos and Narcissists getting promotion
This is one of the best things I've listened to in a long time. I have reviewed it several times, spot on. WOW !
Hands Down... This presentation was right on!!!
People they don't quit companies but Leaders... Nailed it
I handed in my resignation today. I do agree with her
It took a few years to dawn on me.
How did it go? Did you find a new job?
Does the employer give you two week notice when firing you?
@@krisangel7080 exactly! They don't care they will replace you in a heartbeat.
Young lady, you have hit the nail on the head.
Great perspective 👍
@@sandrafledglingmixologista2221 I am trying to QUIT now, tell me how it is with you now, did you regret it? Was it worth it?
@@hananalshameri2050 It was worth it because it helped me get of my anger and my stress. I am much happier and more confident and I sleep better and don't overeat or drink since I left the toxic job. There is no regrets of course, but you have to be prepared financially. I had to use some savings and my new job does not pay as much. You might have to rework your budget until you obtain a high paying job but the health benefits are priceless. Good luck!
@Mariel varon same bro.. After doing work sincerly,,, if the management is just waiting for the mistakes we do and shout,, it's a crime..
Dam this is spot on. Must be an epidemic.
This is a great presentation and excatly why I started my own practice to help people dealing with workplace stress and anxiety.
Mrcityhorror I left the restaurant industry because of the gang bullying.
And physically too.
Great speech, Christie is spot on. I really enjoyed this.
Christie , thank you. I’ve been in insecure job positions, yet, on average, and now, I’ve mostly been in positions of more empowerment. Your messages resonates with both facets: my insecure, impostors-syndrome self, and my “I can, have a voice here”
This is a great message to get through. Thank you

I’m ready to leave my job life is too short to continue to work at a job that makes you feel miserable. I’m so done.
I walked away as an ICT engineer. Refuse to be a corporate battery for other people's dreams
From 1 to 10 , this talk deserves 100
One of the best ever TEd speeches i heard till date.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks for providing info for those of us looking to quit our job.
I'm throwing mine very soon and i can't wait. See you on the other side
Culture is the DNA of a workforce...Love it!!!
This was on point. Required viewing for all employees, leaders and small business owners.
Thank you for this message!!! I dont want that kind of WORK SURVIVAL MODE FROM NOW ON.
My mental health comes first, therefore I will not hesitate to leave a hostile environment.
I’m sending this to management on my last day at my current job!
This talk is excellent. It needs more views. More people need to hear what she is saying.
I work in medical and have for over 11 years. I am sick of it. I am at risk of getting called at any time. I have given it a good run, but this is the year something changes. I'm sick of dying inside every time my phone rings or a new policy comes out.
