Had a feeling I could "be someone.. be someone.. be someone"..as a black woman I can tell you to hear her sing that line.. used to tear into my soul... So to see her get that credit 35 years later.. it makes me shudder...'She was Right'😢
One of the best songs ever- and your thoughts warmed my heart - God made you someone special - ❤
It is great that she won another award. She did win a Grammy for the vocal performance all those years ago, too. (And she has 3 more.) Voice, music, lyrics, and that extra "something special". She's got it all.
u soooo right!!
It tears into my soul.
Yes, this song has always been so deep and real.
I saw Tracy perform this song with my dad many years ago. Timeless, raw, haunting, and beautiful. Deserves all the renewed love.
It’s funny the things you remember, I recall one morning, 1994 or so, this song played exactly as my alarm sounded getting up for 7th grade….And I sat there for 5 minutes and will never forget that moment in my life….
I mean, as somebody who is pretty gay for music/songwriting this may very well be the best song ever written from a lyrical progression standpoint and just as a story. You can take it apart like a movie and find more things as you go back and relisten and just the more you listen the more you find this really perfect balance. If art is about reaching into someone and MAKING them feel moved then one can see how this might be the greatest song ever written... Up there with "landslide"... Hmmm which ALSO got a country cover about 30 years after it was originally made. Weird.
Where was this?
I recall when I brought the CD and was not the most careful with handling it as it always seemed to end up with scratches. What would I do, just go back to the store and purchase the CD once again and then I would mishandle it again and back to the store. Every now and then I would need my Fast Car fix and I would have to have that CD. @@IanWelchel
Omg your dad got to sing this song with Tracy? How’d that happen? Must be surreal!
Trust Me, Tracy didn’t need this award to be recognize. It’s a great accomplishment and another notch on her belt for sure. But those who know the GREATNESS that is Tracy Chapman aren’t surprise, she’s a LEGEND!!! 🙌🏾🖤👑🙏🏽
I'd have been shocked if she had turned up, she really doesn't care about accolades and trinkets at all.
Well said! Just got the Greatest hits in today!

Congrats Tracy Chapman on your win of this beautiful song “Fast Car”. Finally, Finally, Finally, Finally, after 35 yrs, she is recognized for her amazing writing abilities in creating this heart felt song! Well deserved!! was hoping she would be present to accept her well deserved award & sing it live!!!! No one can perform it like she can, no one! She put her heart and soul in writing the lyrics, while performing this song years ago, she lived through what she wrote about! She has such an angelic amazing voice!!! Congrats Tracy Chapman. I’m a Cleveland OH native and sooooo proud of Tracy!! Again Congratulations🎉🎉🎉❤️🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love this song and have other work by Chapman. But it didn’t take 35 years for her to be recognized - she and this song won many awards when she originally wrote and released it. It is being recognized again because it was discovered by a new audience.
tracy won a grammy for this song and others for this album. why do you people act like the cma is her first time being recognized?
Yes she was recognized the year it came out by winning Record of the year and Song of the year at the Grammys. Record of the year acknowledges the song writing. She was also recognized for her writing Give me one reason” which was also nominated for song of the year . Girl has 13 Grammy nominations over the years.
Finally? Were you around when it was first released? It was a huge hit--on the top 40 radio stations every hour. From Wikipedia: "Fast Car" received three Grammy Award nominations: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the latter of which it won. It also received an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Female Video in 1989.
This is the 1st time the country music community acknowledged the greatness of the song.
I was hoping she was there to accept!!! I knew she would win. WELL DESERVED, WE LOVE YOU TRACEY CHAPMAN, YOUR AN ICON & THIS SONG IS MY FOREVER SONG
How did you know she would win. What you did know is she should have won 35 years ago... and was hoping she'd win tonight as a black female music writer of just plain good music. 😮
you think she'd actually show up for and sit through the cma awards? lol.
@@orangemoonglows2692 I'm thinking after all these years she was thinking what are the odds. Music is music I'm African American black woman raised in the projects in N.Y State and I have enjoyed the CMA's in the past. All Black people don't like the same thing.. look at Darius Rucker... who knows what Tracy would choose to sit through?? What we do have here though is a black woman who's talent of writing good music has been recognized and appreciated across the color and culture lines and for that we should appreciate talent as talent.. and... hold back on our judgment... of other people's choices..IMHO
@@damita4336 what do you mean how did i know? 😂 Its an awesome song. You obviously dont know your facts, this song won her a Grammy in 1989. But NOT in Country music why would it win a CMA in 1989 lol
@@orangemoonglows2692 sure why not!!!
Congrats Tracy! A phenomenal artist whose music stirs the soul.
I remember going to a 10,000 Maniacs concert in Philly in 1988, .and she opened. My college friends and I did not know if she was male or female. All we knew, is that we enjoyed her more than the headliner. When she sang this song..sitting by herself on stage with her guitar..we were blown away. So glad she got this award..even though it is 35 years too late.
You know she got a Grammy for the song in 1989 right?
I think she was more androgynous than anything, almost David Bowie in reverse if you will but beyond musically gifted nonetheless. Once she started singing there was no denying what gender she was. She wore dreadlocks way before the Millennials and Gen Z hijacked them and made them a fashion statement. Silly kids.
No, I did not. Thank you for informing me. @@chris2236
They sound alike
Multiple grammys....
My favorite artist. Her albums were the soundtrack of my life. Saw her once at a small venue. Her kind and humble presence is echoed in her music. Love and miss her so much; but I respect her decision to live outside the noise. I hope whatever she is doing these days, that she is happy and peaceful and enjoying her life. She has been a blessing to us all.
Tracey....you need to know just how loved and admired you really are...💖💖😚
Tracy Chapman deserves this recognition, and her version of her song is supreme: Love.
YES!!!! Give Tracy her flowers while she's still with us!!!!
This song got me through 16 hours days at a remote site in Kabul AFG in 2009 and 2010. I will forever associate it with those long brutal work days as a contractor.....Congrats to TC.
The entire CD got me through my wknd commute to Law school back in the day. I had it in a loop so it never stopped playing.
Thank you for your service. I'm glad that you had a "fast car" to help get you through! 😊
Glad you are here with us. Please take care of yourself 💜
Thank you Luke Combs for helping reintroduce the world to the legendary Tracy Chapman and her iconic song that to this day still holds up well. Whether you love or hate his music, Luke Combs recognizes that Tracy deserves recognition for her amazing work. I’m so happy she is able to see how beloved she is. I have always loved Fast Car and have great memories of singing it in the car with my dad so this is a very proud moment for those she inspires. ❤
Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" is part of the fabric of my life. Congratulations to her 🎉
I hope everyone who hasn’t yet, checks out the whole album of Tracy’s that Fast Car is on. It’s truly incredible. So many tracks that don’t get the recognition they deserve like If Not Now, For My Lover… The whole album is a masterpiece 🙌
Now I am going to play her songs today but I have to ensure to get my work done early. I work remotely. If I tell Alexa to start playing it, it will sap my entire day.
@@imhereforitall9218 hope you got a chance to play them 😁
100% - I remember my parents playing the vinyl and also VHS tapes of the concerts ❤. We would sing and dance our hearts out
She's got her ticket... that song hits hard. Behind the Wall. Sorry. Whole album is next level
Time for a deep dive into the catalog of this soulful artist. Everything old is new again!
Her song “The Promise” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Agreed. New Beginnings saved my life.
I have been a fan of Tracy Chapman's since I was a child. Fast Car & Give Me One Reason are timeless & such grooves. Love this for her!
So happy this song got the renewed attention it deserves! Saw Tracy Chapman perform it back in the late 1980's. Loved it then and still love it today!
One of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. The version from 1988 by Tracy Chapman. She was a big deal in the 80s. I have a picture of her still hanging in my place, because that album was one of the most beautiful and poignant albums of all time.
Do list down the other songs in your top 5, would be worth for me to try to listen to! Thank you!
@franksengatti5499look her up on Wikipedia. Her list of industry awards 35 years ago is long, deep, wide, and those of a genuine superstar.
This song reminds me of my dad 🥹 He kept this song on repeat when I was a child. I see myself forever riding in the memories of that Fast Car. Thanks Tracy and Daddy!
Tracy!! I'm overjoyed. So well deserved. 💜💜💜
I loved that song when she put it out initially. Luke did that song justice for her second timer around. Congratulations Tracy!
Congratulations to a lady who has a voice that delivers. I am glad her lyrics can still move the hearts of so many people.
this has always been one of my fav songs she has so much soul, i remember her and clapton preforming together. so happy she is finally getting her flowers
Congratulations to Tracy Chapman, very much earned!
This song has been a part of my life since I first heard it on the radio. And the fact that it has come around again on the awards circuit is just a testament to how beautiful and well crafted the song is. Congratulations Tracy!
She is making millions since she owns the rights to the song
That’s awesome 👏
As she should. She's a phenomenal songwriter
Exactly.
She was always talented and phenomenal musician. Why it took so long to get recognised is beyond me. Congratulations ❤
My childhood song...and now the song i sing everyday 2 remember my childhood and so much ive been threw and over come !!! Thank u nana ..and my uncle jimmy... for putting music in my soul **😮
Congratulations to Tracy and Luke - thank you for a beautiful song ❤
Love TRACY. This song just hits no matter how your mood. Is and I d I love blasting it in the car.💞💞
I always loved this song and it was so fitting for millions wanting to escape to a better life.
Glad to seeher getting her flowers. Such a special song for so many people ❤
Tracy's music, words , thoughts ....WERE OBVIOUSLY WAY WAY WAY AHEAD OF HER TIME ...but what warms my heart that her music is still and more than relevant TODAY 35 years after she introduced us ....LISTEN TO HER WHOLE ALBUM ...ITS IS AMAZING!!!
Oh my gosh, I am so proud of my Mother Tracy Chapman for winning a CMA award for her song, "Fast Car". She's been a hard worker all of her life and it is very honoring to me, that she has won another award after all of these years.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ She's so blessed❤❤❤
?
Congratulations! To you n the Entire family. My favourite song.
The song always looks fresh when being played. The sound of guitar strings very awesome.
I think she’s the most private person EVER. I have loved her music for years. Go Tracy.❤
Tracy is phenomenal. Underplayed as hell in her day tho.
Under played in her day?? Dude the song was on the radio every minute back then and went on to win the Grammy for song of the year snd record of the year!
@@davidsilvas6396but that recognition didn't come from the country community.
Don't want anyone else singing it but her she's amazing ❤❤❤
Congratulations to Tracy Chapman she wrote an amazing song!!
Tracy has always been a hero of mine. She is so amazing. I started tearing up when she started telling Tracy’s thank you speech. I wish she was there.
Am I in the Twilight Zone or what? I used to rock to this song and CD on my wknd commute to Law school back in the day. This song was and still is the sh*t. It won her a Grammy and now a CMA award. This universe never ceases to amaze me. With everything going on in the world this just makes me believe this world is a special place for us all. The good, bad and the ugly. God Bless.
I remember when this came out and my mom getting this at Musicland…35 years ago isn’t that long
35 years later, Tracy chapman wins song of the year for fast car congratulations
ive always admired her talents. congratulations Tracy im so happy for you.God bless you more

Old but gold.....❤️💯🎶still my all time favourites ❤️ congrats Tracey Chapman
Congratulations Tracy, Fast Car was a wonderful song when you released it & it’s nice to hear it revived for a younger audience as well!
Thank you so much Tracy Chapman for bringing such a wonderful song to this world. I like Tracy’s and Luke’s versions equally.
Timeless classic
A heartbreaking song that should've been honored years ago. Thank you, Tracy.
She won three Grammys for that song and the album it was on. People forget she was honored when it came out. She deserves this second round as much as the first.
@richardspada3777 Thank you! How much you want to bet she won't respond to you after that lol
Tracy sang this song from the first person. Luke sings it from the third person. They are both beautiful, but the original video of Chapman will never leave me. That she was recognized by the CMA is staggering and wonderful.
A great song is a great song. I think his version is very basic and it still made a hit.
This warms my heart ❤️
Congratulations👏🏻👏🏼👏👏🏽👏🏾👏🏿
All that you have is your soul, another good song
This is amazing ❤
Tracy absolutely deserves this honor... that being said... it's a pretty hilarious commentary on where Country Music is that they're awarding a thirty five year old song with the "song of the year" award.
It's a great song, and that's why Luke recorded/released it. Don't see humor in that....just an ability to see a great song.
Why would it be funny? Tracy Chapman wrote a TIMELESS song that people all over world, genres, and decades later can still relate to.
The CMA song of the year award goes to the songwriter. The country version was released this year by Luke combs. but the award still goes to the songwriter.
@@FrauIndian It's funny because it didn't receive any recognition for CMA when it originally debuted in the 1980s. It was a popular song back then too. It was nominated for multiple Grammy awards.
@@Gxportwell of course it didn’t because no country music artist covered it back then.. why do some just love to make drama where there is none to be found?
Amazing Artist.Stellar Song.
Thanks. Bou't dang time. Love to all❤
🖤 That's awesome!!! I've loved her music since I was a child.
Congratulations Tracy!
I am happy she decided to be “unable” to be at the CMA. I have a guess on how she feels about all of this and still have to say “thank you”. Love you Tracy. ❤
You're being unfair. She declared that she was happy for Luke, she agreed on the version and she thanked him for making new generations aware of her song. She has the rights of all her songs, no one would record them without her consent. And in her days she was recognized and holds several Grammy awards. She is the elevation and grace in person, though incredibly private.
Yessssssss 🎉🎉❤❤
I just heard that song this year , and loved it . And i really enjoy when she sings it , not when its song by the other guy .
Damn I wish she would have been there.
Ive always loved this song from the first time I heard it. And I have fond memories driving around while singing it. Well deserved award
This song was always my favorite riding in the car with my mom when I was little
So awesome 🥰
And the award was presented by the legend that is Bill “Whisperin’ Bill” Anderson… how cool was that!?
Wait what? This is awesome!
GO TRACY!
So happy for her
Beautiful beautiful 😍 ❤
Wow..congratulations Tracy.
I love this song. I remember it when I was a kid. Great great song. Tracy Chapman did a great job originally and Luke Combs did a great job covering it.
Having said that, how on earth didn't "Wait in the Truck" win? That song is probably one of the best country songs written and performed in the last 50 years. It's literally what country music started as and brought it to the forefront. It brings out so many emotions and it hits home for so many people going through an abusive relationship. The chorus at the end brings chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it. Hardy and Lainey definitely deserved it.
Great song
It is ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!! SHE is amazing
Well, Luke cover her song and got Artist of 2023. After 30 years, they give her. Adios. Shame on them. I'm glad she was not there. This reminds me of of Elvis stole.. never mind
I saw Tracy perform in a small cafe - maybe 20 people were there - in Westwood, Los Angeles California. The show was amazing!! It was 1994-1995.
My uncle and couple of friends call me Tracy Chapman. 🤷🏾♀️....I was annoyed by it when I was younger.....but you know what ....I learned to love hearing here name.
About time!
Deserved.. Time over.... Congrats Tracy!!
beautiful song
The song may have been done in 1988 but it's still just as good in 2023 as it was written and sung in 1988.
Awesomeness, much congratulations
Tracy chapman is truly a legend. CMA recognizing her after 35 years and expected her to be there physically to take that award?. Naah
They didn’t expect her to be there lol and she’s a folk singer not a country singer so she only got the award once someone made it country
35yrs ago is so crazy. Thank the stars for Luke 👍👏 A bit of a story about the song: a few yrs ago a neighbor, a Millie, said I'd know about an old song he heard that he really liked
He said the lyrics went "so we can drive all night". I said oh yea, great song, 'Fast Car' by TC. He was really thankful.
The next day at a local resale store, lo and behold there was one of her CDs. I don't remember which one, but it didn't have FC or Gimme a Reason. I bought it. I didn't see him a few days but then ran into him. I gave him the CD. He'd DL'd some of her music already too. He really liked it
Mind you, he's a Millie. The urban pop, Latinx, hip hop scene is their wheelhouse.
What's funny is in 14yrs I'd never seen one of her CDs there. I saw him about 3 weeks later and he said he loved the CD. He was also surprised Tracy was a she, but that's ok.
Then I heard that distinctive guitar riff a few mos ago. I was delighted to hear it covered and it was so good. You could tell it was very meaningful to Luke. It's very touching.
I'm so so happy for Tracy ❤🎉🎶💥
🙏❤Tracy Chapman 🎉
She doesn't need this stuff. She is our legend since the 80s.
Real Artist live 4 ever❤❤
Wish she would tour again.
Amazing🎉🎉🎉
Yayyy🎉🎉🎉
Long time coming. Took to long🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Congratulations 🎉
HAPPY ❤
Bill Andersons song "I Cant Wait Any Longer" needs to be covered so it can win all highest honors CMA 2025
So well deserved what a great song love you to death keep it up!!!
A long way from busking in Cambridge Mass!
I am so Happy for Tracy Chapmans recognition. She seems solid and never went "pop" to make a hit!
Congratulations but wish she’d been there !
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this. I wish she had been there. How great does Whisperin’ Bill Anderson look, by the way?
Why am i crying?
