It’s funny the things you remember, I recall one morning, 1994 or so, this song played exactly as my alarm sounded getting up for 7th grade….And I sat there for 5 minutes and will never forget that moment in my life….

I mean, as somebody who is pretty gay for music/songwriting this may very well be the best song ever written from a lyrical progression standpoint and just as a story. You can take it apart like a movie and find more things as you go back and relisten and just the more you listen the more you find this really perfect balance. If art is about reaching into someone and MAKING them feel moved then one can see how this might be the greatest song ever written... Up there with "landslide"... Hmmm which ALSO got a country cover about 30 years after it was originally made. Weird.

I recall when I brought the CD and was not the most careful with handling it as it always seemed to end up with scratches. What would I do, just go back to the store and purchase the CD once again and then I would mishandle it again and back to the store. Every now and then I would need my Fast Car fix and I would have to have that CD. @@IanWelchel

Well deserved!! was hoping she would be present to accept her well deserved award & sing it live!!!! No one can perform it like she can, no one! She put her heart and soul in writing the lyrics, while performing this song years ago, she lived through what she wrote about! She has such an angelic amazing voice!!! Congrats Tracy Chapman. What we do have here though is a black woman who's talent of writing good music has been recognized and appreciated across the color and culture lines and for that we should appreciate talent as talent.. and... hold back on our judgment... of other people's choices..IMHO

I love this song. I remember it when I was a kid. Great great song. Tracy Chapman did a great job originally and Luke Combs did a great job covering it.
Having said that, how on earth didn't "Wait in the Truck" win? That song is probably one of the best country songs written and performed in the last 50 years. It's literally what country music started as and brought it to the forefront. It brings out so many emotions and it hits home for so many people going through an abusive relationship. The chorus at the end brings chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it. Hardy and Lainey definitely deserved it.

They didn’t expect her to be there lol and she’s a folk singer not a country singer so she only got the award once someone made it country

35yrs ago is so crazy. Thank the stars for Luke 👍👏 A bit of a story about the song: a few yrs ago a neighbor, a Millie, said I'd know about an old song he heard that he really liked
He said the lyrics went "so we can drive all night". I said oh yea, great song, 'Fast Car' by TC. He was really thankful.
The next day at a local resale store, lo and behold there was one of her CDs. I don't remember which one, but it didn't have FC or Gimme a Reason. I bought it. I didn't see him a few days but then ran into him. I gave him the CD. He'd DL'd some of her music already too. He really liked it
Mind you, he's a Millie. The urban pop, Latinx, hip hop scene is their wheelhouse.
What's funny is in 14yrs I'd never seen one of her CDs there. I saw him about 3 weeks later and he said he loved the CD. He was also surprised Tracy was a she, but that's ok.
Then I heard that distinctive guitar riff a few mos ago. I was delighted to hear it covered and it was so good. You could tell it was very meaningful to Luke. It's very touching.
I'm so so happy for Tracy ❤🎉🎶💥
