  • As your engine runs it produces heat, soot, and grease. The oil in the engine collects all of these and passes them into the oil filter while also supplying lubrication to the various moving engine parts. But in doing so, it breaks down and loses the ability to do its job as well. Thus, changing the oil and its filter become necessary.
An engine oil change is one of the most important bits of maintenance you need to do to your vehicle. Depending on the vehicle, engine oil changes need to be performed every 3,000 - 10,000 miles, and regardless of mileage, once per calendar year.
While you can take your vehicle to a local shop for a quick oil change, they're posted price is usually for a 4-quart change, and then the needed 5th or even 6th quart that most modern engines require are absurdly marked up in price, making that "$30 Oil Change" suddenly hit $50 or more. Not only that, but the base price is for a lowest price oil and filter, which is better than nothing, but certainly not what you really want when it comes to your engine lasting a LONG time. So, take the time to invest a couple of low-cost tools and do those oil changes yourself. In the not-that-long long-run, you'll be saving money on regular vehicle maintenance.

I always use a box end wrench when changing. Sometimes that soclet can tilt a little and cause it to slip. Over time you end up with a rounded off oil drain plug. The last thing you need. Box end wrenches just work so well for this application. And I always prefill my oil filter. There is a reason why oil filters have a anti drainback valve. The manufacturer does not want your vehicle to have a dry start which is what you get with a dry filter.

    A few recommendations here:
Remove jewelry such as rings and watches for safety purposes, so they don’t catch.
Wear mechanics gloves to protect your hands and long sleeves to protect your arms from sharp objects, heat from the vehicle and hot oil.
    Wear safety glasses.
An extension for screwing off the drain plug is not needed. If fact, it made things worse, as per the video, with spilling of oil, including the potential of the drain plug landing in the bucket of hot oil. After loosening the drain plug, you can slowly unscrew the plug by hand, with gloves on, then quickly remove the plug away from the drain hole when it is free from the threads.
Better drain basins are available and cheap. Some are equipped with a drain saddle for the dirty oil filter when it is removed from the vehicle.
The drain plug doesn’t have to be reinstalled before draining the oil filter. In fact, you will get additional drainage of old oil from the drain plug hole when the old filter is removed.
Start with clean surfaces and avoid cross-contamination. Engine bays should be cleaned before oil changes, reducing the likelihood of contaminants introduced into the engine while the dipstick and oil fill cap are removed. The dipstick should be removed and cleaned of old oil, before dipping it back into the engine freshly filled with new oil.
As others have pointed out here, checking oil levels when the engine is running is a no-no.
If you take roads less travelled, you’ll want to ensure that oil changes are done properly!

Don't use a bucket to catch the oil, use a standard oil catch pan, not that expensive. Easier to poor out oil into container when done also.
Also, you NEVER check your oil with engine running. Let your engine run 1 minute turn it off, let it set a couple minutes then check dipstick.

Can I drive to my mechanic a few miles away if my oil dipstick is on MIN?

Wouldn't you get an inaccurate oil stick reading if the engine is running, because the oil wouldn't be in the oil pan, it would be circulating lubricating the engine parts....

You should check it while the engine is warm. By checking it while it’s running cold immediately following the oil change, it gives you a solid reading without having to let the motor run for a few minutes and wait another 10-15 once turning it off. Just a small time saver is all.
