PERFECT ADVICE, our first trip ten years ago was 7 days on the big island and then 7 days in Maui and 10 years later we’ve never went any another place other than Maui. It is literally the perfect island that offers so much.

It’s great when I can extend, but usually I have other meetings that limit my opportunity to extend. (And it’s miserable when I can’t extend, 30-35 hours round trip travel, for 2 nights). This would have been our 6th visit, 7 if you count the Big Island when the volcano popped! We had thought about Oahu but one look at the traffic and highrises was enough to make us think Toronto with palm trees.....no thank you, been there, done that! Watching your videos makes us homesick for Maui. After all our visits we have made some really good friends there and miss them dearly. I am surprised that you didn’t mention renting a condo as a self catering option. We have done that for every visit, so what if you have to make your own bed and cook a few meals, it’s far more economical than using hotels and definitely has the advantage of space . Hopefully when things improve we will be back next year. Aloha.

@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Thank you! And yes I hope I can get the opportunity to get back after this first trip! Your videos are really getting me impatient to arrive!
Hello is it better to travel by plane to Honolulu and go to Maui or travel to Maui straight. Because the travel time straight to Maui is 22 hours while in Honolulu is 16 hours
once you arrive in Honolulu, it depends on your connecting flight to Maui. Hawaiian and Southwest have flights that leave about every hour. So, it may be 3 hrs to get from HNL to OGG.
You need a trip to Maui! I'm curious about Molokai too as Erica has gone but I have not. Lanai is worth the trip, check out Erica's latest post on Lanai if you're interested in going: thehawaiivacationguide.com/is-lanai-worth-a-day-trip/
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide We've been vacationing on Maui for years. And a couple of years ago we finally did a day trip to visit Molokai. It's a quick flight from Maui... which also offers some great views! You can park at the commuter terminal (for a fee, of course but not too pricey). If you're looking for excitement, Molokai is NOT the place for you. With a population of just over 7000, things are quiet and laid back. No big resorts, no traffic lights (pretty sparse traffic overall) and a grand total of 2 gas stations on the entire island! A couple of small grocery stores. Not much in the way of shopping but some nice small restaurants. On our visit, our plan was to start the day on the east end of the island then work our way west to catch the sunset. Heading east, just keep going until the road ends at Halawa Valley. The road is narrow and twisty but offers beautiful scenery. Kalaupapa National Park is a must... the overlook of the peninsula is amazing. The west end of Molokai is the dry side so the landscape is much more the open, grassy variety. We hung out for a while at the beach but it was quite windy that day, and the idea of driving those unfamiliar roads in the dark wasn't appealing so we didn't make it until sunset but headed back to town. We did find some ice cream and a nice spot to end the day. A nice surprise was our flight back to Maui. There was a total of 4 passengers on our flight and even thought the flight was scheduled for a specific time, once everyone was present and accounted for we took off and headed for "home". So if you get the chance, Molokai is definitely worth a visit.
Lanai is totally worth spending a day if you have 7+ days in Maui. We take the ferry over and rent a jeep from a local. Snorkeling just off the ferry is great and the island feels deserted. Love it!
Mahalo! We're group of 15 people and still deciding what island to visit.. and this is very helpful! Thanks so much for this video. Do you think air bnb would be best for us in maui.. or just do a hotel??
I thought the two islands you'd recommend tourists not visit would be Ni'ihau and Kahoʻolawe haha. Have you been there as well? Also, love the neighbor island b-roll you guys included in this video! Great content :)
Haha, I wish we could visit the Forbidden Island and a former missile firing range. One can take a helicopter tour to Ni'ihau or a hunting safari but that isn't our thing. Challenge accepted on visiting Kaho'olawe! I hear they let volunteers go out to help reforest the island. That is up my alley. Aloha, Jordan
Just found your channel and love it!! I absolutely agree with this video!!! I’ve been to Maui a few times and plan to come back next summer with family who has never been. I love the Kaanapali/Lahaina area. I’m looking for a rental home near the beach for 10-12 people or individual condos for 4-6people. The issue I’m having is finding an affordable spots!! Any recommendations of rental homes or condos or hotels with kitchens where we could rent 3??
Hi Carrie! Thanks for watching. We actually have a blog post being published next week on the best options for large groups so I'll leave you a link for that post when it's up. The Westin Nanea Villas has villas that hold up to 9 adults. You could also book 3 condos at the Napili Surf or Napili Shores. We have a video on Napili...it's a wonderful place! Take a look at that video. Just 10 min north of Kaanapali and the prices tend to be a little more reasonable there.
Thanks so much for the response! I can’t wait to see the blog post and the watch all your other Maui videos!! I had watched the Napili one and I believe it said the beach was rocky and more for surfing. We have small children so definitely want something sandy and swimmable.
@@carriegiordano5257 Napili Bay is perfect for kids with its sandy beach and manageable waves. We take Henry there often. Perhaps we were talking about Honokeana Bay as that is all rock but perfect for sea turtle snorkeling. Hope that helps and we will share that link when we have written the article.

We took Henry at 20 months and we had fun. That said, we stuck to the easy paths and didn’t do much hiking. It was fun, but different. There are some great things to see that are very accessible with just a short (safe) walk.
Great video! My husband and I are planning a trip for around September/October of this year! I know that time will be here before we know it, how quickly should get to actually booking places to stay and flights?!
Aloha Katelyn, good question. We recommend booking flights as early as possible and hotels. Southwest allows booking 6-months in advance and other airlines a year. But with cancellation policies more lenient at hotels and airlines, you can watch prices and shop around more. Sept and Oct have the fewest visitors so you may be able to find some hotel deals.
We are planning my nieces 16th birthday and she really wants to go to Hawaii. This would be our first visit to Hawaii ever and we don't know which islands to visit. Which would you guys recommend to visit that is family friendly?
Oahu is our pick due to the price, activities, and resorts for families. Check out our article for more details. thehawaiivacationguide.com/best-hawaiian-island-with-kids/ Maui is also a good pick. Have a great trip! Your niece will never forget her 16th birthday.
Hi! You'll need to fly between most of the islands. It's usually a quick 20-45 minute flight (depending on which island). Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest fly between all of the islands.
I've been to Maui 4 times over the past 6 years. I love the island. I haven't been to the other islands because once I land on Maui, I dont want to leave.
I disagree on Maui for the first time for one reason...if you go to Maui first, all the other islands will be a let down haha. I did Oahu first and loved it because I had never been somewhere tropical. Going there was awesome and it was all I knew up until then about Hawaii. But going to Maui and seeing more of a blend of traditional Hawaii with some of the modern city life, seeing the amazing beaches, experiencing all the wonder that Maui has to offer really made it clear to me that Maui has all the best that Hawaii has to offer and I had such an appreciation for it because I had already experienced the big city lifestyle of Honolulu. Maui is by far the best island overall and is my absolute favorite! But I'm glad it wasn't first or else the others would have been a bit of let down in overall experience for different reasons, though we love them all for different reasons
Haha, I thought we had a rebuttal! Good point, going to Oahu and then the other islands makes for a different experience (appreciation). We loved living on Oahu but Maui offers a blend of both as you say. Thanks for the comment!
@@pluginreport7304 you guys did a great job on the video and I completely agree with it. I think each island offers something very different. We're going back to Oahu and Maui this winter so I can give better comparison then haha. We haven't really gotten too far outside of Honolulu yet, so we can't give a fair assessment of the entire island until we do
@@pluginreport7304 Maui is definitely our favorite island by far, especially west Maui. We hope to live there or at least buy a vacation property there one day!

@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thank you for sharing! I will definitely check it out. We've got 6 full days (I never include travel days haha) on Oahu. Outside of that, I'm looking forward to snorkeling Hanauma Bay and hiking to the top of Diamond Head again. We don't actually have anything else set that we want to do yet, so I will for sure check out some of your videos so we know where to go and what else to do!
Hi! Question for you. We went to Maui in Oct of 2019 and loved it!!!! We want to come back for our 45th anniversary in 2022. Can you make day trips from Maui to Hawaii? My husband would love to do the volcano tours but we don't want to have to find a second hotel and so forth. Thanks!
Good question as day-trips are possible. I'm sure there will be more frequent inter-island flights by 2022 once things get back to normal. You could fly into Kailua-Kona with over an hour drive, see the park all day, and drive back. It would be a long and busy day but doable. Volcanoes National Park has a lot to see near the visitor center but you may not have time for Chain of Craters Road.
Why is "Not jungly" a con? And there IS jungle on Maui, just not as much as on Kauai or Molokai. I actually kind of preferred Maui over Kauai for this reason, because it had more varied landscapes. Kauai was TOO jungly in my opinion. But it's not like Kauai doesn't have other habitats, and I probably wouldn't mind so much, if the jungle didn't have an effect on the climate. So I agree with you about the weather on Kauai. This is one thing I didn't like. Waimea Canyon looked so amazing in the pictures, and the island's weather completely ruined our trip there. That being said, Maui was the first island I visited as well, and I think it's a great place to start. It has a little bit of everything, and the beaches, swimming and snorkeling are better than on some of the other islands, but now after visiting Kauai, I feel Maui is too touristy and commercialized. I also felt it was a bit lacking in wildlife. Kauai like you said is much quieter and more authentic and better for nature lovers, but the swimming isn't great, so a week might be a bit too long. And yes, I do recall our package to Maui being quite expensive. I disagree about pairing Maui with Oahu. We ended up taking a ferry to Lanai for a few hours, and I'd personally recommend taking a ferry to Lanai and Molokai. Why go through the hustle of flying, when you have three islands right next to each other. And this way you can experience two completely different sides of Hawaii. But I certainly wouldn't spend more than a night on either. They have some interesting sites, but like you said, they are undeveloped and difficult to get to. Oahu, eh...... Oahu has cool sites, but I feel it's too crowded and modern and too much of a tourist trap. I've heard it feels more like a big city than a relaxing island. We almost went to Oahu, but I'm glad we opted for Kauai instead, as we read afterwards that a lot of the main sites and trails on Oahu require reservations now, at least a month in advance. Plus, I keep reading about conflicts between Native Hawaiians and White people. Oahu used to be cool, but now it's gotten really lame. I think Big Island is also a strong contender. That was the first one my dad went to, and it has a little bit of everything. It has resorts, but also still has that rugged and authentic vibe, and you can drive for mile without seeing a single soul. But most people seem to go to Maui first, and I personally think Maui is fine for an intro island.

So... Have been to the islands about two dozen times. They are all great. We tell everyone: "Don't go to the Big Island!" No fun. Having been to all the islands except Lanai and Molokai we now go mostly to the Big Island. But, we are stupid. Don't go to the Big Island. Really. Nothing to see there... any other island is better... really... trust me...
I would not choose Maui. I would recommend Oahu or the Big Island. Maui is the only place I felt unwelcomed and while some locals were great, most, inlucding in and around Ka'anapali does not like mainlanders from the U.S. They make it known.

I would recommend doing Maui on another trip. You have a full schedule already with three islands. Enjoy the other islands without trying to put another one in there. Have a great time! You have a wonderful trip planned for the holidays!
Thank you for your help!!!
I've been to Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island. I would love to go to Maui. I'm curious about Molokai and Lanai so I would like to go to those islands.
Have the group watch our video on that question: ruclips.net/video/wgg_4sRXV2Y/видео.html
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thanks for your quick reply and a very helpful video.. I think we're going for a hotel!! Yayyy!!
Awesome!
Can you recommend a resort to stay at in Maui, with the Hawaiin experiences. THis will be our first time.
The Kaanapali Beach Resort by Outrigger provides activities like a hula, the tradition of lei greeting, and other Hawaiian activities.

Hello! great advice! I just wondered whether it’s safe to take an 18 month old and a 5 month old to Volcano National park?
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thank you!!

Love Maui...my only tattoo
that's so awesome
Hi!! Loved the video 🥰 never been in Hawaii before. How do you get island to island?
Hey! How do you guys feel about Pāhoa, Hawaii?

We've got 6 full days (I never include travel days haha) on Oahu. what is the best island for February? As in which island is hottest this month?
they all have the same temperature. You will find the high 70s in February. Go to Maui for the peak of whale season
I've lived in Maui for one week, unfortunately l had to leave the island for work in the mainland if not my boss would fire me.
10 days was not enough on MAUI!!
It’s never enough!
Mosquitos love me and attach me the minute I am outdoors. Are some islands more prone to mosquitos than others? How bad is it in Oahu?
not bad on Oahu, more in the jungles up on the mountains. You won't get them around the resorts, in waikiki, or the leeward side of the islands.

So... Have been to the islands about two dozen times. They are all great. We tell everyone: "Don't go to the Big Island!" No fun. Having been to all the islands except Lanai and Molokai we now go mostly to the Big Island. But, we are stupid. Don't go to the Big Island. Really. Nothing to see there... any other island is better... really... trust me...
I think that there are at least 2 islands there that you cannot visit, right?
It really is shocking how expensive Maui hotels are.
yeah, crazy isn't it?

lots of gyms on the islands.

I would not choose Maui. I would recommend Oahu or the Big Island. Maui is the only place I felt unwelcomed and while some locals were great, most, inlucding in and around Ka'anapali does not like mainlanders from the U.S. They make it known.
I don’t know, as a kid, Maui was my least favorite island.
It's expensive for the tourists, not the locals.
