We've stayed in Kaanapali 3 times and in Wailea once. Wailea is so much more upscale, we would never stay anywhere else. Loved it. I should say though that we are taking our grandkids in December and will stay in Kaanapali. When it is just the two of us we will always choose Wailea over Kaanapali. Doesn't seem to have as many kids. I also think Wailea is more expensive. As I recall we paid about $650 a night for our room versus $450 at the Hyatt Kaanapali.
the video didn't stress that enough. Wailea is for solid upper-middle class folks -- when I say upper-middle class I'm talking about 4-year+ degree professional couples earning 450k+/year combined at least. Although, Kihei directly north of Wailea is pretty affordable and has some crummy people but that to me adds character when you want to go around. Between airfare, resort hotels and shopping/eating/activities a family of four can spend 30-40k easily staying for two weeks in Wailea and imo it's worth every penny. Or you could get a cheap air bnb in Kihei just north of Wailea, eat at food trucks/cheap restaurants and do mostly beach stuff on the cheap and have a great time, and every option in between.
Been to Maui 17 times. Have stayed in both locations but we prefer Kaanapali and always stay at KBH. We always take a day trip or two to Wailea during our stay.
Been to Maui at least 20 times and have done both and I definitely see the benefit of both, but for us there is no place better than Wailea. It's quieter and slower paced and since we are not new to Hawaii tourists, that's the place that we get the best Hawaiian experience. Also we've stayed at the Grand Wailea, the condo above the Grand Wailea, The Four Seasons, the Fairmont, and the Wailea Villas as a family of 5. The villas were a surprise favorite but pricey. But my recommendation is the Fairmont. My kids are older so we don't need to deal with the chaos of getting chairs at the Grand Wailea anymore, but the Fairmont is equally luxurious, but much quieter.
Both, there’s so much to do on Maui. Divide your time and do the activities close to your accommodations. Don’t spend your whole vacation in the car, except to do the road to Hana.
So happy to have found your channel- love your energy! We visited just about 6 weeks ago for 14 days, and split our time between the areas. If money weren't an object, I'd probably stay in Wailea for future visits. We stayed at the Fairmont, and while the service was great, I'm not sure I'd justify the cost again. That said, we are coming back in August, staying (again) at the Hyatt Residence Club in Kaanapali. We stayed last time, and you can't beat the 2 bed accommodations with a huge lanai. We also have a 3 year old, so the Kaanapali area affords a bit more for him to enjoy. We ate at the Seahouse restaurant the last night of our recent visit, and I think a stay right on Napili Beach might be up next years trip- felt much more relaxed and I loved how the little resorts were set up right on the beach. Thanks for the videos- I'll keep watching as we get closer to the next trip. Mahalo! PS- how I wish the average room rates you mentioned in the video were even remotely the same, $$$ these days!
I know! Room rates are up 43% this year compared to 2019. Napili and Ka'anapali does have a better vibe for the kids. We love Wailea but yes, the cost is hard to justify but good for a honeymoon or anniversary trip. Thanks for sharing and for watching!!
I came across your channel over the weekend while planning my Maui Honeymoon and this video just made my decision on where to stay so much easier! Thank you so much for sharing! See you in Ka’anapali this October!
No place better than Grand Wailea! Especially for the kids and grandkids! The pools and water parks are amazing there. Next door to the shops at Wailea. Can’t go wrong!
We actually like to split our time between Wailea and Kaanapali. We usually go for the resort experience for half the trip and typically go to Wailea. Like you said you get a more luxury experience in Wailea, and we think you get the best family experience and the Fairmont. It is absolutely amazing for Families with essentially an all suite set up. We have found we like the vacation rentals in Kaanapali a lot more than in Wailea since you are more likely to find a good vacation rental on the ocean in Kaanapali, and there are more driving adventures in West Maui vs South Maui, so we feel less inclined to be at a resort when we're in West Maui.
We love staying at the Kaleialoha condo’s - they’re right by the ocean! Cheaper than hotels and much more intimate than the giant hotel feel (my preference). And it’s by Kaanapali so it’s perfect!!
How do you choose!!?? ..... I've stayed at Grand Wailea and Ka'anapali Beach Resort. I agree that Ka'anapali has fantastic beaches. Wailea is definitely luxurious with a selection of top-notch restaurants spread out across the resorts. I'd recommend Humble Kitchen, Ferraro, Monkey Pod (more family-friendly), and Whales Tail for a smoothie and snack along the beach.
Awesome. We are staying in Kaanapali in the last week of May and we are excited to see what the island has to offer! We’re hoping that we will be afforded more options as the pandemic begins to wind down a bit.
Very nice couple. And informative. Planning to stay in Lahaina in December. Traveling from California. Never been to Hawaii and taking two toddlers along. Can’t wait. Aloha 🌺
You are going to love Hawaii! Thanks for watching and you picked a good place to stay with toddlers. We hope to see you at Lahaina's Baby Beach. Check out our article if you are looking for things to do with the kids: thehawaiivacationguide.com/things-to-do-in-maui-with-kids/
Oh thanks for posting this. We had tickets to go this past April and staying at Napili Point. We always stay near Kaanapali. Next year when we go, we will definitely check out Wailea on day trips. Can’t wait for 2021 already!
When my family and I stay in Maui we stay in our villa which is the Westin kaanapali villas which we’ve been staying there since I was in kindergarten until two years ago when we stayed in waileia for a few days. I like how in kaanapali tpit seems to be more childhood friendly with wailers village and where the Westin villas are located but in Waileia I like how the waves are very big and how you can’t go very far out into the ocean and it still will be shallow. Although I do prefer kaanapali over waileia.
Love watching you guys. Very practical informations. My family just got back from Maui last week. Second time here , initial plans was at Kauai but due to stricter rules and vacation time from work getting closer , we decided to go back to Maui. Stayed this time at Westin villas at Kaanapali . Plenty of stores open to buy poke , shaved ice, loco moco and all this different Hawaiian dishes. Even got to do whale watching and then the next morning, just a walk from our hotel to the beach, was a whale, spouting water. Very exciting . And most importantly , the kids were able to play golf at Kapalua golf course . Their reason in joining us on this trip😉. Best time to go visit Maui is now, not as crowded yet & less traffic. Weather was perfect and everybody had a good time . We are already planning for our next Hawaiian trip and of course, I will be getting information from you, Jordan & Erika! Please continue sharing your experiences with us, I really enjoy your videos. Good luck and MAHALO🌻🌻🌻
Unless you are booking a condo for 4+ days, avoid those with BS cleaning fees and/or high "resort rates", etc. Our favorite event on Maui is the free Slackkey festival. I hope it returns.
When we went to Maui we stayed in the Grand Wailea which is a nice and private resort that offered a beach with great snorkeling and reefs to visit, also an activity pool with bars and slides for people to enjoy. This is the more kid friendly hotel in Wailea and offers rooms and condos. Staying in the condos offered us a beautiful sunset along the resort.
We were scheduled to go to Tulum Yucatan at the End of january (yes, 5 days from now) and the sudden change in covid testing requirements and quarantine for international travel made us rethink and pivot to a possible vacation on maui. We shifted plans and found an affordable condo and flights and car...but I have NEVER even thought about going to maui....so, i had NO idea what to do, expect or consider...BUT, I found YOUR amazing videos and they have so helped me make informed decisions, be prepared for travel requirements (preflight covid testing) , where to shop for food, what beaches, snorkeling and just generally what to look for and enjoy in the Lahaina area. Thank you again and again...
I have been to Maui many, many times. I used to live on Oahu for 13 years so have been to all the outer islands numerous times. I must say that Maui is my favorite island! We always stay on Kaanapali Beach ... we used to stay at the Westin until we had a child and now we stay at the Hyatt. The Hyatt has great swimming pools and a great water slide for kids. I found the south side of the island a little too quite for me. I want to have a little activity at night. I can't wait to go back in a few weeks!
We split our last trip between the two areas: first Kaanapali where we did a lot more activities (whale watch, snorkeling, west maui loop, etc) and then spent the back half of our vacation in Wailea, where the focus is much more geared toward putting your feet up on a deck chair with a drink and a book as you watch the whale spouts and wait for the sunset. We love Ka'anapali but prefer Wailea since it's so close to Kihei and generally just more centrally located.
Honeymooned in Wailea @ 4 Seasons & loved it, but we’re returning with the kids to stay in Kaanapali and make the drive to Humu’s for our anniversary dinner!
We've visited Maui three times and always stay in Wailea. We are planning a trip this year in May and we may try Kaanapali now that I know there's some what of a nightlife.
The main difference in the vibe is Wailea is old money and Kaanapali is new money… literally and figuratively. We will likely stay at Kaanapali again but brunch in Wailea.
I stayed in Kaanapali and it was right next to a Round Table Pizza. I was in Heaven. Never stopped eating pizza while I was there along with good Hawaiian BBQ.
Thanks for sharing and a good tip. Napili is one of our favorites too! Such good deals and the vintage resorts are cute. Did you see our video on Napili? ruclips.net/video/nHmT6EQdHzU/видео.html&t
I visit a timeshare every year in Kihei. Easy access to both areas. I think Kaanapali is more friendly and accessible. The beach walks in both areas are beautiful, but Wailea has fences and signs 'hotel guests only', while Kaanapali seems open and welcoming. Just don't try to park. Ulua is my fave beach. I truely enjoy my visits to your beautiful island and look forward to seeing you in 2021 hopefully!
Grand Wailea for families is by far the best. The pools and beach are superior without question. I lived on Maui and experienced the majority of properties and would choose Wailea every time.
Grand Wailea has the best kid's pool on Maui, watch our stay at the Grand Wailea here for those who are interested! ruclips.net/video/AwCKHnzHMQ4/видео.html
As noted, Wailea is a bit more expensive than Kaanapali, and that seems to go along with a slightly different clientele. Kaanapali seems to attract more families with children plus younger folk interested in the nightlife in nearby Lahaina; Wailea still has lots of families but also more older couples. Of course, if you have children old enough to enjoy water parks, the Grand Wailea has a terrific setup, great fun for kids and parents alike. Keep in mind that, along with slightly lower cost of accommodations, it is easier to find less expensive restaurants in the Kaanapali area. Another small but possibly important difference is traffic, something most people would want to avoid on a visit to Hawaii. The area around Kaanapali/Lahaina can get pretty busy compared to Wailea.
I would stay in Kaanapali in the summer over south shore just in case of a fire like I experienced in July 2019. All the smoke was heading south. I stayed Kihei but spend a night at Westin in Kaanapali cause of closure of the roads.
We stayed there a couple weeks ago! Quiet and intimate place. Nice pool, beautiful gardens, and easy and fun to hop in the Tesla to go to the beach. It may be too quiet for some but great for a honeymoon.
Definitely Kaanapali … the further north you stay on Kaanapali the more trade winds you pick up …. Not a bad think as the sun is intense and the breezes kill the humidity… Wailea is too hot for my tastes … no wind at all let’s the humidity climb a little
You can't go wrong with either - break up your trip and spend time in both areas. For a nice bonus, spend a night or two just North of Paia at the Inn at Mama's Fish House.
Hi guys! Love your smiles and you present very well! Just a thought. You live there and should be experts on island and city pronunciations. I know I'm being picky and I mean no disrespect but IMO you should pronounce the the areas in the Hawaiian pronunciation when applicable. I think many travelling there for the first time would be interested in knowing the pronunciation. I know I did! Anyway, you guys are awesome and I really enjoy your videos! Good luck to you in the future!
Thx for these great videos! Trying to plan a trip in early August 2021 for 6 days Maui and 6 days Kauai. First timers. Teenage kids. Which one is a better location for trying to do as much as possible on Maui. I.e., best location island wise? Same with Kauai... Poipu or North Shore?
is there a way to get up to the crater for sunrise without renting a car and driving yourself? Do hotels or any other things have shuttles? I don't want to drive up by myself
Aloha, yes there are local tour operators that will pick you up at your hotel, provide breakfast, take to to the summit, and give a tour also. We like Hawaii Tours (Go to Maui --> Attractions --> Haleakala National Park --> Sunrise Tour) but there are other operators also that you can check out. thehawaiivacationguide.com/HawaiiTours
I have found some air bnb's on the east (wet) side of the island that I am considering for our honeymoon. We are planning to rent a jeep, but do you think that it would be an inconvenience to pick a location so far from these populated areas?
How far over? Paia and Haiku or good locations but Hana is too far. Make sure it is a legal rental, short term rentals aren’t allowed in areas in upcountry or north shore.
Thanks for the video! Do you guys prefer Kaanapali over Kapalua? Debating at staying at the Westin vs. The Ritz (never been to Hawaii so want the best experience possible!)
The Westin has a better pool and is walkable as it’s in central Kaanapali. The Ritz is quieter and has DT Fleming beach down the hill. We like Kapalua and Napili beaches a lot. We have some new videos coming out that will show them more. Hopefully that helps!
We're thinking about doing four nights in/near Wailea-Kihei (to give us time to go to Molokini and perhaps a Lana'i day trip whose ferry leaves from around there). We also will try to do Hakeakala during that time though I know it's a long, circuitous drive from there. Then take the Road to Hana and spend a night around there before heading back across for two last nights in Ka'anapali would that be a reasonable itinerary?
We are planning a vacation with our 12 year old son & 14 year old daughter and wanted to know which area would have more to for them, or the better/more fun resorts? Also, do you think Maui would be the best island for them, or do you think Oahu or one of the other islands would be better? Thanks!! Great video!!
We think Maui is best for families. we have a video to explain why ruclips.net/video/K68f8_1xyyQ/видео.html&t. Maui will have the most for them to do. Second would be the Big Island with all the great tours they offer.
failure because they didn't say which they prefer. in other words, if they were to book a room at either location where money was no object which would they pick?
My daughter and fiancé are trying to find a honeymoon spot for September 2021 but won’t be old enough to rent a car Will they be able to get around without one? Love your content!!!!
Check out our video on renting a car on Maui, we share tips and other transport options they can do. It all depends on how many activities they want to do away from the resort areas and budget to spend on Uber or use the bus. ruclips.net/video/f0JuYwfNvhM/видео.html
At the end of your videos you make it seem like we can ask direct questions about planning a trip to Maui but i cannot figure out how to do this . Please advise thanks
We're happy to answer direct questions if we can! You can either leave a comment with a question here or email us (thehawaiivacationguide@gmail.com). You might also find more helpful information on our website thehawaiivacationguide.com
I like Ka'anapali more for that. It is a faster walk to Wailer's Village and there are more restaurants there than the Shops at Wailea. Also, Ka'anapali shopping is more lively.
We've stayed in Kaanapali 3 times and in Wailea once. Wailea is so much more upscale, we would never stay anywhere else. Loved it. I love Wailea. The Grand Wailea was the best family vacation we've taken! 😊💗

Kihei is my favorite area . Location, location ,location. Shopping and eating is close. Equal distance to all the attractions.👍😀
Kihei Cafe is our favorite breakfast spot on the island.

Ka'anapali all the way for me, LOVE the Hyatt.

Westin Maui my family choice.
Orrrr Stay in Kihei!! WE just got back from Maui, and LOVED our condo in Kihei :)
a great place to stay!
@Silvia Hoard it was Kihei Beach Condominiums. Ali'i Resorts was the property management company we rented it through
Had a April 2020 trip planned but.....covid19. We plan on coming April 2021 to celebrate 15 year anniversary and renew our vows. I pray we are able
Congrats on your 15-year anniversary! The odds are looking better that you can come in April, and have a lot open around the islands.
I’m disappointment because the debate continues😂🤙🏽
We split our last trip between the two areas: first Kaanapali where we did a lot more activities (whale watch, snorkeling, west maui loop, etc) and then spent the back half of our vacation in Wailea, where the focus is much more geared toward putting your feet up on a deck chair with a drink and a book as you watch the whale spouts and wait for the sunset. Four Seasons Wailea, the best of best!
Great content, thank you! We like Kana…lots to do! I especially like the adventures and tips on rental car companies.

We've visited Maui three times and always stay in Wailea. We are planning a trip this year in May and we may try Kaanapali now that I know there's some what of a nightlife.

Great video. We're heading to Hawaii next month. We island hopping and spending 2 days in Maui.
Have a great trip. A lot to see in two days, enjoy!
Kihei! Snorkeling at McKenna landing. Miss it so much! Thanks for sharing.
we agree! McKenna Landing made our top 5 for snorkeling locations on Maui. Check out that video!
Both are great, but I love Kaanapali... can't wait to get back. Just gorgeous.
@Silvia Hoard Aston at Papakea, very nice resort.
The main difference in the vibe is Wailea is old money and Kaanapali is new money… literally and figuratively. We will likely stay at Kaanapali again but brunch in Wailea.
I have stayed in the Westin and Sheraton.
I love Kaanapali and Lahaina/
Do you live in Lahaina.
I always look forward to it. Mahalo!
Which was better westin or sheraton?

I love Westin!
Thanks for the videos we will be there in exactly 365 days to celebrate brothers 21st and we are getting married out in Maui. Countdown has begun
Congrats on the birthday and wedding plans! Have a great trip. We will have a lot more videos out this year for your trip!

Wailea already booked as long as COVID stays calm.
West maui for sure,Kaanapali the most
The Grand Wailea and Four Seasons Resort (the best two resorts on Maui) are both right next to each other on Wailea Beach.
Do you have any recommended Snorkel Set that is good quality?
Would love to know what you think of Hotel Wailea, staying there in early October for our honeymoon!
We stayed there a couple weeks ago! Quiet and intimate place. Nice pool, beautiful gardens, and easy and fun to hop in the Tesla to go to the beach. It may be too quiet for some but great for a honeymoon.
Wailea is very nice like Rodeo Dr of Maui but We noticed it was more cloudy and rainy on that side of the island at least during this month.
Definitely Kaanapali … the further north you stay on Kaanapali the more trade winds you pick up …. Not a bad think as the sun is intense and the breezes kill the humidity… Wailea is too hot for my tastes … no wind at all let’s the humidity climb a little
good point, further north in Kaanapali means more rain showers and wind. We love the area as it is greener but expect some warm showers and wind
We’ve stayed many times over the years in both areas and have found Kaanapali windy on the beach.
thanks for sharing your experience!
Toss up!
Both are fantastic, if I had to choose for next year i'll go with Kaanapali.
Home Sweet Home!
Wailea no question! We got married at the Four Seasons Wailea!
Very accurate.
Bar hopping up and down kaanapalli fun times
The Grotto is eager to welcome visitors back...
In July we are staying 3 night in Waliea, 2 in Lahaina, and 3 in Hana.
have a great trip!
🌴🌊🌴🌊The Andaz is my favorite
That’s a gem. Good luau
It’s up in Kapalua..for me..
good pick!
You can't go wrong with either - break up your trip and spend time in both areas. For a nice bonus, spend a night or two just North of Paia at the Inn at Mama's Fish House.
YES! That sounds like the perfect trip.
Uz 2 do a magnificent job.
Thanks! We are working on improving our pronunciations! we are using ʻŌlelo Online.
Love all the Hawaii content. What hotel on Kaanapali Beach is your favorite?
We like the Westin the most for the pool and property. Kaanapali Beach Hotel is the best value hotel.
Hands down Kaanapali is the best.
is there a way to get up to the crater for sunrise without renting a car and driving yourself?
Andaz at Wailea!!
I booked a Airbnb in Kihei for this October. Five nights for $650, seems like a good deal.
sounds like a great deal. October is a good month to go.
I like upcountry.. makawao 🤙 too Hana ANYDAY!!!
I'm with you, 100%
Have they finished the construction at the Shops at Wailea?
Thanks for the video! Do you guys prefer Kaanapali over Kapalua? Debating at staying at the Westin vs. The Ritz (never been to Hawaii so want the best experience possible!)
The Westin has a better pool and is walkable as it’s in central Kaanapali. The Ritz is quieter and has DT Fleming beach down the hill. We like Kapalua and Napili beaches a lot. We have some new videos coming out that will show them more. Hopefully that helps!
Anyone else only see and hear Paul Rudd when he talks?
Does anyone recommend staying in Wailuku? Any disadvantages or advantages?
Do you need a car to drive around mauwi or just stay in the resort? We plan to visit around 2nd week of october
It is easier to explore with a car. Here are tips for maui without a car thehawaiivacationguide.com/how-to-get-around-maui-without-a-car/
failure because they didn't say which they prefer.
in other words, if they were to book a room at either location where money was no object which would they pick?
Also you swapped Kaamapali and Wailea sunny days, small mistake that does not matter at all, ha!

What hotel on Maui feels the most Hawaiian? Like you know when you are in Hawaii when you stay there
Ka'anapali Beach Hotel gives that vibe.
Upcountry MAKAWAO.. ON TOO HANA . HANDS DOWN !!
stop at mama's first ... yumm
Wimbledon West still there?
Ka’anapali is sooooo last decade :)
I’m going to kaanapali tomorrow
Any resort recommendations for Kaanapali for a July trip with 3 young adults (20, 18, 16)? Our family’s first trip! Thank you!
The Westin properties have nice pools and beaches. Sheraton, Hyatt, and Ka'anapali Beach Hotel are all good picks, hard to go wrong with any resort.
Hey guy’s my favorite hotel on Maui is grand wailea
The Grand Wailea has a wonderful pool, they are remodeling the rooms now!
which is the best area for walking to shops and restaurants?
I like Ka'anapali more for that. It is a faster walk to Wailer's Village and there are more restaurants there than the Shops at Wailea. Also, Ka'anapali shopping is more lively.
You guys have beautiful teeth!
I prefer Kihei, central and lots of local places to walk to.
Thanks! Kihei has a loyal following!
Hello, what’s the Covid restrictions now in 2022.
Thanks!
Covid restrictions ended in March. No talk of new ones. Travel safely. A lot of folks still where masks by choice.
Good)
