My reaction to Season 1 Episode 1 of Chernobyl. Wow, what a captivating first episode. Going into Chernobyl, I was aware of some of what had happened in Pripyat a few decades ago. Still, watching this re-enactment of the events was incredibly immersive, gruesome, sometimes blood-boiling (for obvious reasons), but I can't wait to see where the rest of the miniseries goes!

Even though a history buff myself and reading all about Chernobyl from books and some documentaries , the series still helped to understand the horror of the situation. This is one of the best series on historical events.

Note: Dyatlov was not an asshole who wanted the operators to break the rules. He made sure everybody followed the rules. The reactor blew up because of shoddy design.

There was the inevitable criticism of the dramatic liberties taken, but the author of the primary source book for the series, Svetlana Alexeivitch, responded by saying of the critics, "Imagine history in the hands of such people."

"He deserves death". This was not said in Malice for Dyatlov, Death would have been a mercy as he was riddled with Cancer.

I was in high school in Kentucky when the accident happened. Glad to know it's not completely forgotten by the younger generations: it makes me feel like I'm one billion years old when I have to explain what happened in 1986, it was such a huge event at the time.

It's not taught to younger generations. I was a baby in Europe when this happened but went to middle and high school in the US and it was not even mentioned. Same with the incident in the US in 79.

It amazes me how many people still know so little about this when it was such a horrific event. I'm from Switzerland and we actually learn about it in school. They also distributed iodine pills to every household, schools etc. and people were instructed to only use them when the government advises you so (which luckly never happened till this day.)

Everyone with a name in this episode is a real person. Dyatlov really was like that, according to his surviving colleagues. He thereatened people's jobs. Most of what happened is historical, down to the 1K and 200 Roentgen meters. Concerning the denial: You had to pretend that the Soviet Union was a worker's paradise where nothing every went wrong. If you raised an issue, it was your fault. They set out to build a tractor factory. Work fell behind, but no one wanted to take the hit, so the paperwork moved on on schedule. Eventually, the fire marshall showed up to inspect and found a cement slab. Concerning the lack of alarm: People were told that radiation was a good thing, a sign of progress, and if the Americans nuke us, Civil Defense has it covered.

The nuclear power plant was named after the city of Chernobyl because Chernobyl was a much older city. The city of Pripyat was built at the same time as the nuclear power plant and was still very young

as someone that actually knows quite a bit about nuclear physics (although i am not expert on it) and also quite a bit about the soviet union but didn't know too much about the chernobyl incident besides what little my mom told me about from what she experienced of it, i absolutely loved this show, it was pretty much perfect for me

Its incredibly difficult for us as Westerners to appreciate the culture at play here.
Its all very much, do what you're told, don't ask questions, don't contradict or question your superiors.
When something goes wrong, everyone is looking to pass the buck and find a patsy to blame.
The American nuclear accident at 3 Mile Island had the exact same problems.
People were downplaying, underestimating, lying, trying to pass the buck and that makes it harder for those at the top to grapple with the problem.
    Incredibly frustrating.

It's a shame how uneducated, especially the younger generations are on Communism and the culture, behavior, and consequences of such..ive seen many confused people watching this. Like, it's the Soviet Union, of course they handled it this way. To be fair though we aren't much better in the West 😂

Definitely looking forward to watching the rest of your videos on this. I was wondering though, seeing dozens of these Chernobyl series reaction, no one here post 2020 made a connection with another event that caused a global catastrophe, even more deaths, and was largely if not entirely caused by propaganda based, one party system favouring 'saving face' over saving human lives both in and outside its country...System whose initial reaction was to cover everything up and hope no one notices and silence those who recognise what had happened...until it was too late - COVID 19 pandemic.

Every single character named in this episode was a real person, and the unnamed/unseen plant workers are also real. Like, for example, the seriously wounded guy they find in the rubble is meant to be Vladimir Shashenok, who died of his injuries a few hours later in hospital. And various people keep asking where Khodemchuk is during the episode, referring to Valery Khodemchuk, who was never actually found; it's generally assumed he was killed instantly in the explosion, and is buried somewhere in the wreckage.
Hell, in the second episode someone offhandedly says "My friend was a security guard that night, and now she's dying" and that's also historically accurate! Two of the security guards that were on duty that night died of ARS, and they were both women.
Also the significance of everyone vomiting and having red skin is because that's the immediate symptoms of being exposed to heavy radiation - their faces are red because they're getting radiation burns, and vomiting is a symptom of ARS. So when you're working at a nuclear power plant, there's an explosion, and suddenly everyone's turning red and stumbling around vomiting... you know you've got a serious problem.

Right now you can't go to Chornobyl Exclusion Zone because there's war going on in Ukraine. With russian troops starting their invasion through the area, capturing Chornobyl NPP (stealing stuff and forcing NPP workers to work 24/7), digging trenches in Red Forrest and catching radioactivity. They've been completely thrown out of the area since then, yet end of war is still not yet in sight.
If you actually would want to go there, bear in mind that you have approximately 25 years max to do so and enjoy Pripyat ghost town, because there's plan to demolish the whole town within the next 20 years, or it might crumble on itself within 30, making harmful dust clouds.
As a gamer, you might wanna check Stalker franchise out which is based on Exclusion Zone, every installment have NPP and most of them have Pripyat, with ukrainian devs making actual trips to do adapt it faithfully. Stalker 2 is going to be released this year should no development complication happen.
    Cheers from Chornobyl child.

I want to remind you that this series is a work of fiction, and contains many errors, so I recommend reading the essay by Dr. Robert Peter Gale, "Chernobyl, the HBO miniseries: Fact and fiction" in The Cancer Letter.

I wouldn’t say it’s “errors”they’ve made changes to keep the show entertaining, not make a documentary, and that was a right call, I’d say this show made more people aware of what happened than any documentary would ever do.
