This series is phenomenal but be prepared to get angrier at the officials lol. It gets pretty grim, but this is honestly some of the best television I've seen. I can't WAIT for this energy for the TLOU.

I had a good friend in grad school who had been a doctor in Minsk when this happened. He died young from a rare form of thyroid cancer that was not so rare among people near Chernobyl. Minsk was in the path of the radioactive cloud. He was killed by this, leaving a wife and child. He was one of the nicest people I had ever met, dead way before his time because of incompetence.

You are in for a unsettling yet beautiful ride! I'm glad new folks are hearing about Chernobyl thanks to The Last of Us, imagine being a fan of this director because of this mind-blowing mini series and then finding out he is making a TV series of my most loved video game. I cannot be more excited! Also the music score for Chernobyl is haunting as hell, it perfectly gives you that horrifying sensation of being hunted by the invisible killer that is the radiation. Anyways, awesome reaction to 1x01 !! You'll definitely deserve more subs.

Yeah I'm suprised I have taken so long to watch this mini series tbh.
I always knew about it and knew it was something special but for some reason never took the dive until now! And like you said since The Last Of Us is coming out I thought now would be the perfect time to watch this masterpiece!

What wasn't shown in this series was that although the state knew about the disaster, public celebrations of May 1st were allowed to continue in nearby cities when all this radioactive material was in the air.

You deserve way more subscribers than you have, binge watched your House of Dragon which was brilliant, Chernobyl is heart breaking and infuriating at the same time. All actors in this series are superb as is every episode. The attitude of the officials remind me of Titanic when they didn't put enough life boats onboard because it was 'unsinkable,' with Chernobyl they didn't prepare for a disaster because it wouldn't happen!

Yeah I wont lie, I was pissed off the entire episode. I was internally and physically screaming at some of these political officials! I guess the disaster wasn't just the meltdown but also to do with alot of the individuals involved with it aswell! Such a great show so far.

The railroad bridge scene, the bridge was a pedestrian bridge standing 25 feet above railroad tracks. That bridge became known as the "Bridge of Death" because every person on that bridge that night, every man, woman, and child, about 40 of them, was dead within a month.

I think they exaggerated how quickly some of the effects to exposure would show up, at least for some of the people, but there's no doubt some of them received massive doses. Also, it's getting the point across that this is a super dangerous situation.

I remember when this happened...it was truly horrific and scary. What I want you to remember as you watch this is that No one one Earth had ever dealt with this before. Even the people in charge didn't know what to do/how bad it was. That crap happens when humans think they can control something like nuclear energy. There is obviously some very VERY hard to deal with stuff coming up. I'm not sure you can get prepared for it. But just to reiterate....no one, especially the general public, knew the extent of the dangers of exposure or the long lasting effects. Just a few scientists knew and as you can see, they weren't listened to.(not to be rude, but mostly because of the politics where this took place). FYI: radiation pretty much melts you from the inside out....like, it destroys you at a cellular level. This show is absolutely stunning!!!

I was alive at the time and remember all the experts on TV telling us that there was no way a reactor designed that way could explode. On paper it was considered impossible. That is why engineers and physicist's protest so fiercely. According to everything they know, it can't be true.
I live in Norway, so our view was NATO's view, right? I lived in an area that due to geographical features and weather patterns got some of the heaviest concentration of fallout outside of the disaster area, even higher values than Poland, concentrated over a few square kilometers.

@@boltzzs that’s a really good idea actually, I always find most people are convinced this isn’t dramatised. One thing to know is that the thick black smoke shown is also dramatised, in real life it was far less, and it was a sickly gray colour, you can easily find real footage on RUclips, just search “Chernobyl helicopter footage”, also a fun fact the phone call to the fire department is 100% real, you can also find it on RUclips.

This a really good series...one of the best ever made...but the producers did get some things wrong. Some things were changed intentionally for the purposes of storytelling, and the makers of the series put in a series of notes at the end of the last episode of the series explaining some of them. However, I do recommend you check out the History vs Hollywood article on Chernobyl when you are done watching the whole series, so you can find out about the other things that the producers got wrong that they do not admit to. Definitely wait until you are done with the series so you do not spoil anything for yourself. ✌💯

They actually do admit to it. Listen to the official podcasts accompanying each episode, they are available on YT. Mazin goes into great detail as to how and why he changed or omitted things. Some things were done because of time constraints, others because TV is a visual medium and you have to somehow get across to the viewing audience what is going on. For example, the thick black billowing smoke you see coming from the reactor was in reality only a light fog. But how do you convey to the audience that, despite that you cannot see much of anything, really bad stuff is pouring out of that crater? By using the thick black smoke column.

I don't think that "officials" don't believe that things are bad--they KNOW it's bad. But this was the USSR--nothing was ALLOWED to be bad if it's under the control of the State. This happened just before I graduated college and headed to Europe for two months. I cannot recall any of this--some things were still kept quiet. So damn scary.
