Bugs are not what you want to find in your house. And fruit flies are especially annoying because it doesn't take long for them to take over your kitchen. Luckily, there are several easy ways to get rid of those pesky critters. So here are some tips on how you can keep them out of your sweet summer treats for good!

    SYMMARY:
    - The funnel trick is a magic trap for fruit flies, and it’s kind of a fun DIY project.
    - Start by grabbing a tall vase or jar to use as your base container.
    - Next, you’ll need to choose your fruit fly bait. Fruit flies go after anything sugary.
    - Now, roll a piece of paper to create a funnel shape, and tape it so that it keeps its form.
    - Stick the narrow end through the top of your base container so that the funnel is resting in the opening.
    - Finally, set your fruit fly trap near the infested area - perhaps near your fruit bowl, garbage, or sink.
    - There's a similar method but with a little less crafting. All you need do is put ripe or rotten fruit in the bottom of a medium or large bowl.
    - Throw in a sweet liquid as well, maybe soda or syrup.
    - Cover the bowl as tightly as possible with plastic or Saran wrap. Grab a fork and poke holes around the top of the wrap.
    - This is the same idea as the funnel method - we’re luring the fruit flies to a bait that they can get to while making it harder for them to escape.
    - Take 2 medium-sized jars and fill them with fruit rinds and peels. Cover the mouths of your jars with clear stretchy plastic wrap.
    - Poke a small hole, perhaps with a toothpick, in the middle of the dents; this is where the fruit flies will enter the trap.
    - When you notice fruit flies in one jar, put it in the freezer. This will freeze the flies and their eggs!
    - The one sure-fire way to prevent fruit flies in the first place is to store your fruit properly.
    - Once the fruit is ripe, it’ll last much longer when refrigerated.
    - Even if your bananas are black on the outside, still try refrigerating them - this may save the tasty inside.
    - Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit stop ripening after they’re picked, so these can stay in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

I’m having a terrible time this summer with fruit flies. I’ve been taking care of my aunt who is having chemo, and haven’t been home much. I accidentally left an overripe watermelon on my kitchen table, and by the time I discovered it, I had probably 1,000 flies. I’ve caught hundreds of them on sticky traps, but they just keep reproducing! It’s driving me crazy

I had success with a jar trap using a funnel made from a resealable bag and a rubber band. They like the smell of vinegar (hence their name, vinegar flies). I have used ACV, red wine or balsamic vinegar, and even leftover wine or tawny port.
I find that keeping my fruit bowl in the fridge helps. I also freeze citrus fruits in pieces, frozen lemon in cold drinks and frozen oranges for a cool summer snack. Old bananas and berries can be frozen for baking or smoothies.

Another way to get rid of fruit flies is to get a styrofoam plate and some oil.
1.Add a little bit of oil to the plate
2.mix the oil around so it’s everywhere on the plate
3.Then if you see any fruit flies, swat them with the “oily styrofoam plate” and they will stick onto the plate

I wish the people in these comments gave more honest reviews cause I’ve been trying this method for months and many of the flies just crawl right out. Its like this stuff is feeding their young because all fruit is covered up and they now live in my bathroom as well.

I feel you. I wonder why its always just one tiny fruit fly that just loves to walk along your skin and is afraid of nothing even if you move around a bit - of course it will fly if you approach it on purpose. They were never interested in people before so I am surprised.
Oh and one more tip. Just put some peels to a fruit plastic bag that is not totally sealed and has many folds on the entrance. Then shake the entrance and they fly deeper into the bag and close it tight. Voila! You got them all caught - except the one that prefers people to fruit peels, which goes over my head and yeah, it likes to literally just wander along your skin (propably ears too?) even if the skin is clean and dry. I do not really understand why. But the normal fruitflies are pretty easy to catch. And do not wash the fruits you put to the fridge. The moisture will turn into ice in there fast.

Unfortunately I have a problem with fruit flies but it's not due to fruit getting left out, it's because of something that's left its residue on and in my sink... -_- so until I figure out how to fix that, these traps will come in handy.

A margarine tug with 2 inches of wine vinegar and several drops of dish liquid. Covered with saran wrap, punch a Bic pen through in 6 places. Cleaned out the kitchen in 2 days. Don't make holes too big. 1/8 - 3/16 diameter.

I make a small hole on the side of a plastic pill bottle with a burning hot nail or a drill bit, then pour a small amount of vinegar at the bottom of the bottle, put the cap back on the pill bottle and I have a very effective trap. I used to make the hole in the lid but found that in the side works better.

What they didn’t say was that they twisted their funnel to a fine opening tapered at that end. The flies can squeeze through by compressing their wings but can’t fly out.
