      The mouth piece of the water bottle has to touch the water, if it doesn’t the trap will not work. Might take days just to catch one. Just don’t let the water go above the mouth piece part, the trap has to look like a funnel

  • @TheOnlyBowl
    @TheOnlyBowl 3 месяца назад +86

    It works better if the mouth of the bottle isn't touching the solution. That way they can't fly out once they're in.

    Thank you so much Rebecca! I had what it seemed like an infestation in my kitchen. I placed 3 of the bottles around my kitchen. As soon as I placed them I saw the flies starting to get attracted to it. After 2 hours I check the bottom of the bottles and half of them were already there! I left it during the night and I just woke up and we are flies free. Thank you ❤

      @@emilygabaldon5404 same. I left a damn banana peel in a Walmart bag I was using for trash in the kitchen overnight. Went to grab the back the next day, saw what I first thought were knats, not many. Soon as I moved the bag, about 50 of them came flying out. I tied it up real quick, as I could see a bunch still in the bag. Then they were just everywhere after that.
      Found this video, put a couple in my kitchen. As you said, within 30 seconds I had 5 or 6 of them already coming to the bottles. After 3 days of using them, changing them out each day, they are now completely gone. I even caught one normal fly, as well lol
      Truly did not think it would work, let alone work this well. If they are actually fruit flies you have, this 100% works. If it's not working for you, it's probably not a fruit fly you're dealing with.

    I hate how they target my face and dive bomb me They come out of nowhere. I believe the drains could be the issue.

    • @melissaolson6108
      @melissaolson6108 Год назад +21

      Drain flies can be removed by putting 1/4 cup of salt, 1/4 cup of baking soda (mix these two) in your drain, then add 1 cup of vinegar. Stopper the drain and flush with boiling water the next day. You may need to repeat this a couple of days. I usually add a squirt of Dawn or Lysol to the drain, after the dry ingredients, before the vinegar.

      @@LeoBoxGaming I don't know what window mosquitoe blockers are...so you mean a screen? In theory a small enough screen would work, but household drains have drain stoppers in the middle. So you can fill the sink with water. So I don't know how you would adfix the screen securely.

    HEAR ME OUT: I did some extensive testing dealing with my terrible fruit fly infestation and gathered quite a number of insights:
    1. Do not use the inverted top of the bottle, it's not necessary. I did a direct comparison and the bottom of a bottle filled with the solution actually worked better than the full construction that I tested alongside! The inverted bottle top method is great for catching wasps though!
    2. You don't need a huge trap, you rather want to place a number of traps around your apartment.
    3. The amount of solution you use doesn't matter that much. If you use a large cup you just need more of the solution. It's the surface of the solution that's important, not the depth. So make sure to use a small vessel that you can fill up almost to the rim because if there's a big rim, the fruit flies will just sit there and probably even feast on the vinegar solution that spilled on the rim when building/filling/moving the trap. You can actually use a number of espresso cups. You won't need much solution and you can put them in a number of places.
    4. If after a day or two you think you catched almost all of them, don't remove the traps! The fruit fly population will grow again if you don't leave the traps for another few days! Maybe even leave one trap somewhere discreet indefinitely and change the solution from time to time.

    It doesn’t have to be Dawn, just any dishwashing liquid will do. The soap is a surfactant (chemical that lowers surface tension). If you do not add the soap, the fruit fly may just sit on the surface of the liquid and fly away. If you add the soap, they will not be able to float on the surface, they will sink and drown.
    Just use a shot glass, don’t need to use a funnel, they just fall in the liquid.

      Ok, so for the past 3 years every summer I get the pleasure of going to war with these little bastards. The apple cider vinegar method does work but there are some important things to understand. 1) Flies only go into these traps if they have no other choice. No other option for food. Gotta keep kitchen, trash can, and drains crazy clean. 2) Clean the trap daily and put fresh vinegar in it. Otherwise, it will stop working. Also, not a bad idea to swap out baits from time to time. I found fruit juice to also perform exceptionally well. 3) Try to avoid putting loose food in your trash can if you can. Stuff things that are likely to draw flies into large air tight storage bags and then toss in the trash can. Makes starving them out much easier if you're already keeping the kitchen clean.
      If you can't keep loose food out of the trash can, double bagging your trash so any that may have started breeding in your trash can get trapped inside and can't get out to infest the outside trash can. This is important because if they infest the outside can they will just come into the house from outside. Especially when the trash is collected weekly. Hope this helps.

    Those flies eat meat as well! I forget to put some leftover fried chicken in the refrigerator and several days later those things laid eggs all over my leftover fried chicken as I saw their little maggots wriggled all over the leftover fried chicken! Those things eat anything!

    Don't let the neck of the inverted bottle touch the liquid as in the video! as the fruit flys can't get in past the liquid leave at least 10 centimeters gap 👍😊

    I have traps with apple cider vinegar and dish soap and the fruit fly doesn't get near it the fruit fly has been living longer than fifty days four months I tried spraying it with my bleach cleaner and it didn't work and it has been growing I'm worried because I have a baby guinea pig scratching his ear there is no way it could be laying eggs because there is no other fruit flys just one so I don't why the fruit fly would be bothering him

    • @curiouscharacter1

      I think maybe you should Google "fruit fly" images. Fruit flies don't show up one at a time; it's usually 100 or more. These guys look like gnats; only 2 or 3 millimeters long. You might be looking at a house fly.

      @@curiouscharacter1 there was a infestation in my house and I was spraying a bunch of them with bleach cleaner and it was killing them the female was the only one left and I knew it was a female because it kept laying eggs in my guinea pigs ears my boyfriend started cleaning my guinea pigs ears with peroxide and cotton swabs and she was flying above the cage watching him and then it started flying around my house from room to room I saw it inside my bathroom one day on the wall above my toilet and I sprayed with the bleach cleaner and it didn't die that guinea pig died that is why it wasn't flying around the cage anymore we got a new guinea pig and it wasn't bothering this one because it was the only one inside my house three weeks ago it started flying in my boyfriends face and he killed it and I do know what fruit flies look like I had a big infestation going on in my house

      You're wrong. I left some vinegar (no water) with a drop of soap out on my counter, the next day I counted 30 dead fruit flies. Out of maybe one to two hundred that formed when I went on vacation and left fruit in my garbage can. I started leaving out 2 traps and they were all gone in a few days.

      Any dishwashing liquid will work. Just don't overdo it. The idea is to break the surface tension so that once landing on the surface the little bugs sink at once before they have a chance to escape drowning by flying away.

    This is a counter productive idea 😂 the flys are there because you have open container of apple cider 😅which is gross to see them every day and deal with that grossness.
    If you don’t want to see them, don’t leave around cut and open sugary stuff to begin with, even to trap them 😅 this is just sounds ridiculous 🤣
    This is similar to leaving money around to catch thieves.
