FRUIT FLIES ARE NOT THE SAME AS GNATS. Since you used the terms interchangeably in this video, which is it, exactly, that you're showing us how to get rid of? Is it fruit flies or gnats?
Slice of lemon in small cups woth saran wrap across top, poke holes, after several have gone in trap, pop in microwave for 30 seconds. It kills them and makes your kitchen smell lemony fresh
Microwave doesnt kill them. I used to put my food in the microwave to avoid them getting on my food. But they find a way in anyway. So i used to microwave before i opened the door but theyd fly out after microwaving them. What i found out according to a science video is theyre too small including ants to absorb the microwave. It just passes them. Apparantly
The dish detergent reduces the surface tension on the liquid inside the trap and makes them sink better than just plain vinegar alone. I had them about 2 years ago.
Did it with a hose from a vacuum. Sucked them suckers up SO fast. I then baking soda vinegar cleaned drains and covered all water sources including toilet lids and sink/shower holes. Sprayed out the dishwasher with vinegar then Lysol wiped surfaces and it was a one two punch and done situations and very little time besides simple wiping even in the fridge I used baking soda and vinegar then cleaned the surfaces with sanitizer and dried them well before closing up the fridge. But no kill is coolest if you can use panty hose and a vacuum or something like that to temporarily trap and release it’s a hack I’ve tried out of “sheer necessity” 😅 It can simply come down to how many lil dudes ya got due to what have you’s n such and give it your whole heart❤ Much love! Great video!

People that leave fruit in the kitchen get fruit flies and people that grow plants near a window get gnats. They are two different insects. Vinegar, soap and water works great on fruit flies for me.😃
this looks good , as he mentioned getting rid of the food source is the best thing to do , that could be any thing from standing sink water , to rotten potatoes, fruit etc , empty beer/wine bottles, or jam on your counter. they don't need much food to keep multiplying. gl
My problem is I can't find the source. All fruits and veggies go in the fridge and the garbage goes out. I'm not infested like your home but every day I see a few flying around. The traps are set. Wish me luck.
I found them in the salad inside the refrigerator . So , I cut & rinsed the lettuce and dried it off then , I put the lettuce along with paper towel inside an air tight container . I plan to do that with the cabbage and carrots . I’m already using thick plastic produce bags for all the fruits too ! I have to monitor the refrigerator to look for rotted fruits and vegetables and immediately get rid of them and keep the refrigerator as dry as possible .
I have used this particular method as well as to get rid of fruit flies, so far I did manage to catch two fruit flies in my living room. I have made some more of it and put in the kitchen as well as the bathroom plus put one in my trash bin 🗑️.I will continue monitoring if there is any more fruit flies getting caught by this situation.
I lived in a town that had an art district. Few streets with small restaurants also and all had outside patios. Entire town was in old orange grove section of Orange county Calif. Many still had orange trees in yards but never picked the fruit. Rotten fruit on ground. So if at outside patio of restaurants we all put napkins over our red wine. One wasnt so bad and I asked what brand the traps were that I saw hung up inside and out and noted they worked so well. Waitress said oh its not the trap. We put red wine in them!
In my experience, you want to dilute the apple cider vinegar down a bit. I still havent gotten the ratios right but 3:1 vinegar to water seems to be descent at the moment. The thing is, straight vinegar is too strong and there is a tendency to actually repel the flies rather than attract them. Thats just been my experience. Let me know if yours is different. Id honestly like to get some verification on that, because there might be something else going on here. One thing I have noticed though is that store-bought traps will have a fluid sold with them, which smells a lot like apple cider vinegar but will be a lot more watery looking; I dont know if this is a refined recipe, or if they're just getting cheap, or if there is an entirely different chemical in it. But it kind of suggests to me that Im on the right track. The store-bought stuff is way more effective though; still dont know why.
I agree, I water it down a bit and use dish soap with a fruit smell like orange. It attracts them within minutes and I put the sticky traps near or attach to the cup I use to catch them faster.
in my experience if you have gnats its because you havent looked hard enough and found the problem. been chasing gnats for a week this time and found where the kids had put a bag of potatoes in the bottom of pantry where we keep the plasgtic bags from groceries and had been there for a while. got rid of the old fruit and got rid of the gnats
This does work very well, the problem we have also is finding the source because we keep everything put up and we even rinse out any containers or cans that go in the trash to try to remove any food or juice. But we live in an apartment building with a total of 8 and I believe some are coming through the drain pipes. I will try the idea of putting the vinegar down the drain and I think I'll also start closing the when not in use. Thanks for the video and the ideas😊
In you video you're calling them Gnats...you are correct...not Fruit Flies. Gnats like cold...they will go into your refrigerator or freezer and die. If you have window AC units get rid of them as soon as you can and your Gnats will be gone!
There is and always will be only one way to beat a fruit fly problem. Remove the moist breeding material. They need undisturbed fermentation to multiply, find the source and clean it up once per week and they're done. Anything short of eliminating the larvae feeding material is a waste of time.
A Venus won't be that effective if at all! The flies are too small! I think a pitcher plant will be better! I had a Venus and it didn't do a damn thing about the gnats, mosquitoes or fruit flies!
Once you have your hand on the wineglass with the flies inside, you could fill your sink or bathtub with water and put your hand with the glass in there, so you will be letting them go underwater instead of setting them free to breed outside.
This worked the first time I did this years ago, and then I think they actually got smart because they never go in anymore. 😂 I’m gonna try straight up wine and see if test works better for me.
you are right they are smart, I just saw them sitting on the margin of the bowl, some walk a little distance and walk right back. No Luck!, but will continue to try this technique
I’ve been using this method for a couple of weeks and I catch plenty of them in the traps BUT more keep coming. I see no decrease at all. I have no fruit or any food sitting around, I wash every dish as soon as I use it, and trash gets emptied several times a day. Very frustrating and NOT as easy as you make it seem!
There will be a source somewhere if they're still coming even after traps are set and no trash in the house. They can be very difficult to get rid of especially if you've been overrun with them.. but they won't stick around for nothing and new ones won't appear for no reason. Fruit flys are all about smell and they go with what attracts them. It could be that you have removed all possible sources and its the apple cider vinegar in the traps which are now attracting new ones? Maybe after you next empty the traps...don't set any new ones, make sure everywhere is clean, trash out etc... give it a day and see if they are still coming.
YESSSSSSSSSSSS finally someone with the same problem as me lol. Dude I had hundreds last summer and just like you I have ZERO sources that I can pinpoint. At one point I had cleaned my entire apartment head to toe and kept it that way for a week or two and still hundreds spawning in. The thing is, I read everywhere that they require soft gooey stuff to lay eggs in and that material literally doesn't exist in my place. If it gets as bad this summer as it did last summer, I'll prob just move units. Oh yeah and the apple cider vinegar basically had no effect, like it only killed a dozen at a time. I will say that the sticky tape that you hang from ceilings had a massive effect, not that it mattered much since they still came in droves but yeah. When winter comes here in MN it gets rid of them, but past couple days I've seen a couple and I'm just flabbergasted at the persistency of these damn things.
@@kevinarriaza1951 And here is Texas, we havent had a bad winter in a couple of years, so these things are just relentless. It's a major problem here in North Texas.

Funny .... this AM I watched a vid on trapping Fruit Flies, good ole YT algorithm fed me more Fruit Fly videos of course! Then I realized one was from 2 yrs ago by my favorite Florida Realtor channel!! LOL.
Lysol All-purpose cleaner is good after you set your traps for stragglers. I use Lemon flavor. Just make sure you wear a mask, the wide spray and mist from the bottle kills them in seconds.
I had a really bad infestation in my place, but I beat it with traps like these. I used yoghurt cups, so I didn't have anything to clean after. I would put plastic foil over, then fasten it with 2 (!) rubber bands, and then poke holes with a match since that seems to create the perfect size and shape of a hole. I have not tried using vinegar and dish soap, but it's probably the better way to go about it. My traps kept them alive, and... you don't want that. I put banana peels in there. It lured in 50-80 within days, but after 5-7 days, larvae would hatch in there. They are nasty as hell and they can creep back out through the hole or squeeze past the rubber band (but not through 2).
I just used a plastic water bottle, cut the top off a few millimeters past the top cone funnel part and turned it upside down on top of the rest of the bottle fill with apple cider vinegar, seems to work pretty good too.
Not necessarily. The eggs are probably on something we don't eat and don't even realize are there until after they've hatched and spread wings. Joe Biden wrote a paper on fruit flies at West Point just before he invaded Poland.
Thank you, I'm going to try this. I've been spraying the inside of my trashcan with my horse's fly spray and I notice they especially love to invade my wine glass in the evening. I have a wine glass sippy cup I've resorted to just to keep them out when I am not drinking from it. This is an annual problem and they have typically hung out from August through till October. It's hell. I'm going to try making traps. Do you think traps would be even more effective with red wine instead of vinegar?
If you set a trap of any sorts (they seem to absolutely love pumpkin spiced beers as I found out) you can also instantly eliminate them as they rush w.e it is you have set up, and if you happen to have a larger handheld butane torch... such as the ones used in kitcnens and bars, you can slowly get up close to the savages while they are going for the bait and roast them rather easily and very quickly. Even if a few escape and try to fly away.. as they are no where near as elusive as a stand house fly... you can use the same torch and hit them mid air rather easily lol makes for an interesting game of one way tag haha
Torch them for real. I do the same for many insects I go to warehouse with. Roaches, spiders, fruitflies, house flies

Listen, this gnat problem is really working my nerves. I've used smoke... But never a flame 🔥.... This will be the perfect amount of fun and danger. 😂😂😂
Put some juicy fruit like a lemon on a baking sheet in the oven with the door open. When you see a bunch of them....slam the door shut and turn on the oven. Repeat as needed.
Wow... over a year and no response. I also want an answer to this question... off to Google I go ☝. If I had to guess I'd say standard or malt vinegar is too strong and maybe repels them so diluting with water might work?
@@andysmith5464 They like Fermented anything. Wine, beer, cider vinegar. try adding a piece of banana peel💥 or some sugar, honey,or maple syrup to the vinegar. Or any rotting fruit. 🤞🏼❤
I personally try to spraying them with Raid, I get a you miss me. I see them in front of the T.V./ they mess with me when I'm trying to sleep, If I set aclean plate out here they come, so I am trying what you suggested with hotel 🏨 plastic cups 🥤 that comes with plastic, I have no liquid apple cider, but I am using apple cider pills that has expired. I hope it works, and I have one mosquito 🦟 in this house 🏠 I hope it catches all of them 3 fruit flies, I have the smell good trash 🗑 bag's with no trash in the house/ fruits are bag up.
My fruit fly problem has been going on for 1 week, in basement, kitchen, garbage can, bathroom. I've used ACV traps and can't get rid of them. Same amount everyday. I cleaned my garbage can, new bag and still not better. I put all food in fridge, cleaned counters. Found a possible source (opened 7up can from 2 months ago filled with pop and emptied it.) Still just as bad. I have used a fruit in a jar as well. Catches the flies but not enough. What am I forgetting or not doing a thorough job with?
For fleas, fill a pie pan half full of water and add about a half tspn of dishwashing liquid...stir gently to mix it. Set the pan on the floor in an out of the way spot and put a high intensity reading lamp about 9-12" above it. Fleas will come to the heat source (lamp) and jump into the pie pan and drown. Stay safe!
I just moved to the south from the northwest and it’s a bigger problem out here. Back home I could just get rid of anything sweet and fermenting and they would be gone in a short amount of time. Not here.
If you have a really bad infestation, you can add another element. Place your vinegar trap, let it sit for a while until they all find it, then pop up and spray them with alcohol and watch the whole colony drop out of the air. Cleanup is a little messy.
Are these the same gnat things that are coming out of my window ac unit? Every year I get them crawling out of it & no matter how many times I clean it they're still there.
use mosquito repellent ( good night liquid) it works like a magic , we have tried everything and got tired of this little monsters and we thought lets try repellent and it killed all the flies within an hour.
I have a lot of gnats at least I think that is what they are flying around in every room in my house. I do not have fruit in my house I do not leave food out so I do not know where they're coming from or how to get rid of them are even if they are gnats they're just little bitty black a bunch of bugs flying around but they're in every room in my house please help
He said fruit flies don’t bite, lol! I have been bitten by them countless times. Not only do they bite you, they use stealth by biting you in your lower legs and feet if they’re exposed.
Yes! They Do Bite😢 I had a raised bump on my face last year and one this year. Brats! Wipe your face after eating fruit. Especially Kiwis and Watermelon. Both are high in Fructose 🥺😡
Between having guinea pigs, treats, hamsters, ferrets, and a cat... suddenly I got a huge infestation! Worst thing about these nasty creeps is that they leave spots all over the walls of you have a larder number of them
Those are fungus gnats. They nest in plant potting soil. They are black in color with long legs. They are attracted to the color yellow, carbon dioxide, and light. They like moist warm places to nest. A possible trap for them is a jar or wine glass filled with water, sugar and yeast. The container should be topped with a yellow funnel. When watering the plant reduce the amount of water to the plant and mix an insect growth regulator into the water before watering the plant.
hi I've been using the vinegar trap for a while now and my house is still full of them especially in my kitchen. I've cleaned my kitchen and all my work surface's and i'm still getting them. I don't have any fruit or veg lying about. Don't know what else to try. any suggestions for what else i can try?
Why not just put a little bit of red wine in a glass then cover it with plastic poke holes they seem to be attracted to that more than anything that I have?

Not necessarily. The eggs are probably on something we don't eat and don't even realize are there until after they've hatched and spread wings. Joe Biden wrote a paper on fruit flies at West Point just before he invaded Poland.
Yes, the government now encourages us to eat bugs.
And in their last few minutes of life, they go out happy and drunk on their asses!
Do i mix the vinegar and the soap or do i just pour it in the cup
Thank you, I'm going to try this. I've been spraying the inside of my trashcan with my horse's fly spray and I notice they especially love to invade my wine glass in the evening. I have a wine glass sippy cup I've resorted to just to keep them out when I am not drinking from it. This is an annual problem and they have typically hung out from August through till October. It's hell. I'm going to try making traps. Do you think traps would be even more effective with red wine instead of vinegar?
Someone on another video said red wine can be effective as well
Use red wine vinegar 😆
It works better.
Try zevo from Walmart
If you set a trap of any sorts (they seem to absolutely love pumpkin spiced beers as I found out) you can also instantly eliminate them as they rush w.e it is you have set up, and if you happen to have a larger handheld butane torch... such as the ones used in kitcnens and bars, you can slowly get up close to the savages while they are going for the bait and roast them rather easily and very quickly. Even if a few escape and try to fly away.. as they are no where near as elusive as a stand house fly... you can use the same torch and hit them mid air rather easily lol makes for an interesting game of one way tag haha
Dude is out here chasing fruit flys with a flame thrower!
@@williestarke 😂😂😂😂😂
@@williestarke LMAO. Get some!! Take no prisoners !!
Torch them for real. I do the same for many insects I go to warehouse with. Roaches, spiders, fruitflies, house flies
Listen, this gnat problem is really working my nerves. I've used smoke... But never a flame 🔥.... This will be the perfect amount of fun and danger. 😂😂😂
Wow, the trap even stripped out the apostrophe from the "I'll" in the title!
Put some juicy fruit like a lemon on a baking sheet in the oven with the door open. When you see a bunch of them....slam the door shut and turn on the oven. Repeat as needed.
I am not using that oven again. 😂😂
I don't have apple cider vinegar, will vinegar do the trick also??feedback please & thank you!
Wow... over a year and no response. I also want an answer to this question... off to Google I go ☝. If I had to guess I'd say standard or malt vinegar is too strong and maybe repels them so diluting with water might work?
@@andysmith5464
They like Fermented anything.
Buy some raid fly sticks
Same for me. They just keep multiplying
@@bonnie_nelmslike gremlins 😂😂😂
I go crazy because of them too!!! Nothing helps. 😈
Or you can put a few slices of bannana in a jar and add a paper funnel into the jar for a live trap. I like to feed them to my frogs.
Great fruit flies removrl video
I don't have fruit flies, but I've been at WAR with fleas since October
For fleas, fill a pie pan half full of water and add about a half tspn of dishwashing liquid...stir gently to mix it. Set the pan on the floor in an out of the way spot and put a high intensity reading lamp about 9-12" above it. Fleas will come to the heat source (lamp) and jump into the pie pan and drown. Stay safe!
ProFlex is your best friend😊
Crazy that they even go after used tea bags
I just moved to the south from the northwest and it’s a bigger problem out here. Back home I could just get rid of anything sweet and fermenting and they would be gone in a short amount of time. Not here.
Is it normal to have them in really cold weather?
How long does it take to notice them gone
If you have a really bad infestation, you can add another element. Place your vinegar trap, let it sit for a while until they all find it, then pop up and spray them with alcohol and watch the whole colony drop out of the air. Cleanup is a little messy.
Very militaristic...I love it!!!🤗😂
I've had more fruitflies this Fall than ever before. They are even dying in the refrigerator!
Are these the same gnat things that are coming out of my window ac unit? Every year I get them crawling out of it & no matter how many times I clean it they're still there.
Thanks for the info!
why didnt this work for me? One time i made a trap and caught 30+ but then next time i did it the exact same way and got like 2-3
May be they watch video on RUclips
use mosquito repellent ( good night liquid) it works like a magic , we have tried everything and got tired of this little monsters and we thought lets try repellent and it killed all the flies within an hour.
I'm struggling ... they are crawling over the saran wrap ... I see them go all the way into a hole and then come back out. What am I doing wrong?
Do they have nutritional value? Do you know their glycemic score?
If you collect them together after catching them they make a very nice Broth .
Thx. Great vid.
You never put dish soap in the trap you made?????? Did it work???
The world thanks you !
Thanks for sharing ireally appreciate and it will really help me becoz ihave this is issue of flies in the house and are two money
thought i had lice while i slept til i figured out it was those things disrupting my sleep.
I have the exact same problem with my friends, they all flock to the wine
I have a lot of gnats at least I think that is what they are flying around in every room in my house. I do not have fruit in my house I do not leave food out so I do not know where they're coming from or how to get rid of them are even if they are gnats they're just little bitty black a bunch of bugs flying around but they're in every room in my house please help
Buy a few bug zappers
Thank you. 🇨🇦
How about wiping a thin layer on the inside of the wrap? Ty
How they breed is in when you water your plants in the soil of your plants they breed
Use something you can throw out, and wash down the entire kitchen once they gone, fruit flies can carry lesteria, colera, salmonella and so on.
Recipe for fruit fly pie
Just found the source. A bag of potatoes in my potato bin . Good lord!!!
What wine would you recommend? LOL
If wine works so good, why not use that instead of apple cider vinegar?
I can’t find the source of them either. The only thing I have around are plants- not fruit plants- I have evergreen plants
5:40 This joker is just catching the same fifty flies over and over again. Release them out on your porch.
😂
😂😂😂
He said fruit flies don’t bite, lol! I have been bitten by them countless times. Not only do they bite you, they use stealth by biting you in your lower legs and feet if they’re exposed.
Exactly they certainly do bite. I'm dealing with these flies and they are so annoying. But I'm working on resolving the issue.
They do bite yes sir
Yes! They Do Bite😢
I had a raised bump on my face
last year and one this year. Brats!
Wipe your face after eating fruit. Especially Kiwis and Watermelon.
Both are high in Fructose 🥺😡
I’m having a terrible infestation rn I’m going to get some wine
talking about traps begins at 3:00
Thank you
Between having guinea pigs, treats, hamsters, ferrets, and a cat...
suddenly I got a huge infestation! Worst thing about these nasty creeps is that they leave spots all over the walls of you have a larder number of them
That should say rats not treats
They love my ferret cage too lol
My bugs aren't exiting my house alive.. they come in, they signed an agreement to perish...
This really made me laugh
Thanks from BC Canada
My source was a pot of soil I had sitting in the kitchen🙄
Be awesome if that worked for yellow flies 😎
They don't work in Britain our flies are too clever 😂
I didn't have any other way to contact you. We are big fans and miss you. Is everything ok?
The best and Happy Holidays to you and family
Thank you !
Thank u!!! You explain it very well
Good tip Mississippi !
Why not just put a little bit of red wine in a glass then cover it with plastic poke holes they seem to be attracted to that more than anything that I have?
They dont bite you? Where do you live???
How about the drain pipe flies...they seem a lot harder to get rid of.
I vacuum them up, relentlessly.
Big pot of boiling water down the drain
