- Ants in the garden are not always a problem - a little annoying, and they can help to spread aphids. However, if they begin to cause too much of a nuisance (or, as in this case, loss of sales!) it's time to get rid of the ants. Here I'll make up a simple ant trap that will help me to get rid of the entire colony if I do it right.
Here's a follow-up video to answer some of the common questions: • Get Rid of Ants: Q&A a...

What is borax?
It's a naturally occurring salt of boron, often sold in North America as a laundry additive. I answer some questions about it in the follow-up video: ruclips.net/video/Wfj-naVG8yM/видео.html

Not be confused with Borat, it was a movie that may kill ants with laughter as well.
Carpenter ants invade our house every spring; we always put commercial traps out for them but they always return. Luckily I watched this video last year and tried this method. I followed the instructions exactly -- I almost ran to the store for frozen waffles before I remembered I had some old pancake mix -- and was rewarded this spring as for the first time ever, no carpenter ants. Thanks!
I don't even use waffles. I just poor a little bit in a milk jug cap. They still find it and take it back to the nest! Viola!

@@nocnoc9931 nope, no dead or dying trees. We always have ant hills, small, in the yard. We either get the tiny red ants, or the big black ants. This stuff works on BOTH!
Exactly, when I saw a massive army of ants marching down my sidewalk, carrying what I thought to be a food source, ended up they were eggs, I immediately thought, "exterminator and $$$, but would they really exterminate? Or regulate? Exterminating isn't a great business model ironically, for an exterminator, Jason just saved me some prescious $$$ I can use to put gas in my work van, this video is everything that's good about social media.
If exterminators ever get a rep on K street, this would be banned. I wish there was no censorship on social media and the powers that be would let us watch anything, and make our own choices, this is a perfect example, if the government was involved in exterminating ants, we wouldn't see this, ya off the wall comment, but that was my first thought after seeing video, "what if government had approve how we dealt w/insect infestation, sad but true we're heading there
Thank you for mentioning the effectiveness on carpenter ants!! DE has worked great on tiny ants, but carpenter ants not as well. I will use this boric acid mix now. Folks, note this boric acid works GREAT on roaches too -- used in apartments years ago!!
Worked in 8 hours when everything else failed. THANK YOU!!!
Wow, did you come along at the right time. I just found whole invasion of ants in my raised garden and had no idea what to do. THANK YOU!!
Spray or pour cheap vinegar around areas you do not want them to go. It wont kill them or fix the problem permanently, but they hate the smell of vinegar and stay away from it. They work by sense of smell and the vinegar throws them out of whack.

Even in the middle of winter, people can have ant problems after bringing potted plants inside their house. Thanks for your excellent video and all the best.
Very well done! Short, sweet and informative. Thanks for posting.
Thank you soo much for this tip. I have so many ants in my garden, especially on the ground.
I had a moderate to severe ant issue in multiple rooms of our house. I did this except that I used brown sugar. Within 12 hours significant difference. 24 hours three fourths managed. Under three days ants gone throughout the house!
Thanks going to give it a shot.
Did you only put one container in the house? Or several in different rooms?
What did you do ?
I would definitely put out several traps if you have issues in different rooms.....You will control the issue quicker. You don't want them making trails all over the place...other ants will follow the trails like a highway. Be sure to wash walls/floors where they've trailed....Terro Liquid Traps work awesome as well if you want a chemical trap.
This is a great way of doing it. Using bait traps require extreme diligence in making sure they never run out of liquid, until the queen (or queens) have perished from ingesting the poison (borax), and is why most people don't think bait traps/liquid work. Using the waffle pretty much solves that. Very useful tip, thank you.
Best used ever for those crappy super processed waffles LOL... I'm going to try it with bread as the sponge and solid for the babies!
Man!! Best way iv heard someone explain on how to get rid of ants. U should be a teacher!

I've been using this recipe for a couple of years, minus the waffle. Works extremely well. I put it on cotton balls.
This works great. I had a very large nest in the back yard. A nest of big black ants. The hill was about ten inches high and very active. It took about a week and they are gone!
I get red ants every now and then where I live.
I boil a pan of water, add Dawn dishwashing soap, and then pour it over the ant nest.
Problem solved.
Now be proud!
...
@@im1who84u boiling water does work for the symptoms but they just move on, and also this destroys your plants and grass.
@@lolwtnick4362 I've never had the "them" move on because there are no living ants left to move on after they've been "treated".
There is some localized damaged to that small spot of grass, but it does recover naturally.
This same treatment also works for in-ground yellow jackets. Of course for yellow jackets there are some extra precautions and procedures you would want to follow.
First, before you even begin to approach the entrance to their in-ground hive/nest, you want to wait no less than two hours after the sun has completely set.... and even then you want to approach with caution.
Pre plan what you are going to do and do it quickly. Have everything you need at your finger tips, and plan your escape route.
You may even want to practice your plan, less the water, in another similar area nearby.
I would use a five quart pan of boiling water and a good squirt of Dawn dishwashing soap.
Approach the entrance.
Pour the water in the hole.
Cover it with a six inch square screen.
Place bricks or rocks on the screen to hold it down.
Walk away and go in for the night.
Check it out the next day and evaluate your results and see if further action is necessary.

A wasp trap placed on the ground works as well. Like wasps they go in but seem to not go out. They drown in the sirup. Will not kill the colony but thin out very affective.

Awesome! Thanks Jason. I also learnt a couple of weeks ago by smearing Vaseline around the trunk of trees/bushes it will stop ants carrying sucking insects up there to make them honey due. I noticed ant activity on my lime & bay tree. I did the Vaseline trick & now two days later no ants - Yay 😁
Thanks Heather. Good to know.
Chewsy Pets ?? Maybe you have different ants 🐜 there than we do in New Zealand? I have no ants stuck but they have all gone & I did put big blobs on 😮
Please don’t use Vaseline where there might be birds flying by. If the birds get Vaseline on their wings, they will die a slow death.
Keep an eye on the vaseline. I was reading the comments on an article just recently where someone had used vaseline around a tree. It affected the bark & caused it to ring bark the tree, subsequently killing it. I would imagine some trees are more susceptible than others....

I've been looking for an effective yet not too synthetic ant poison as of late. Found it! Thank you!!!
Diamateous Earth, food grade. I sprinkle it on the kitchen counter, then smear to make a film. It scrapes their belly out. Made from harmless crushed sea shells. Found their nest in the vent opening to crawlspace. Put it there liberally. Can order from Walmart.
Also makes good roach killer. Mix boric with the sugar and add flour. Then slightly moisten and roll into balls. Place them under sink or wherever needed. Just make sure your pets or kids can't get to them. If your house is off the ground put some under there too.

I'm going to have to try this. I bought my house three years ago and have been battling ants almost the whole time.
Find the ant hill, mix 1/2 cup dawn dish soap in 2 gallons of water. Stir the mix well and then pour the mix down the ant mound. You may need to treat the mound 2 or 3 times before the entire mound is completely dead. I had so many fire ant mounds at my new house and in a couple of weeks there were no more ants. This mis will not harm good insects or damage plants.
This Dawn dish soap, highly diluted in water, also works (AS A SPRAY) on flying pests . . like wasps (we call them yellow jackets in Texas) . . . it's rather run to combat the lethal pests with CHEAP (inexpensive) but LETHAL firepower . . . MUCH cheaper (and also much less toxic) than expen$ive flying insect killer sprays... and like I said .. . much more fun.
(Connecticut) We also call them yellow jackets up north.

We're talking about carpenter ants here, I have finally gotten on top of them but must be diligent to treat for them twice per year, make sure all areas of home are sealed and freshly painted. I've never had an issue with ants inside my house, thank goodness, but they have done extensive damage to my home over the years and given me lots of work and stress.
I do something similar: I mix even parts of Borax and non-dairy coffee creamer, grind them to even consistencies with a mortar and pestle, then put it on their trails. You can often see them carrying it back to their colony, which also gives away their entrance to the house so I can seal it after they've ended their parade. It takes 1 to 2 weeks to completely eradicate them, but it's pretty effective. You can also take some narrow masking tape, bend it to a right angle and make a little shelf to put it on. This is helpful because, in the country I'm living in, they come through the walls.
your method doesn't work if you have to continue doing it.
