    The second, "healthy" plant has more frequent and complex melodies. It seems like there is a lot less activity in the first plant, but the sensors also look to be different. What was the reasoning behind using two different types of sensors?

      Deftreaktor great observations and great question. The toothless alligator clips were used on the injured plant because removing electrode pads from a plant with holes on its leaves would likely result in torn leaves.

      I would be careful with jumping to conclusions here. If I understand correctly then this device is only picking up one voltage. What you hear in this video is already aestheticised by pitch and melody quantizing, choice of instruments, effects, etc, etc - that's what the guy in the video is talking about when he says "harp and flute sound set". It is a free (i.e. arbitrary) musical interpretation of one single voltage source forced within a certain melodic grid (aka "scale", which ofc are human made conventions who are also pretty arbitrary from a plant's perspective, except for maybe some few intervals like octaves and fifths). It's a nice toy that puts out meditative drones or an interesting tool for sound design, but it is not a scientist in a box. I suspect that the empiric observational significance of this "sound set" audio output is close to nothing. To say something substantial about the state of your plants you'd have to look at patterns of the actual voltage signal from your plants and put that into context of the situation around them over a longer period of time. Listening to meditative tunes may help you to lighten up your mood while working, but MIDI sprout won't do the work for you.
      I'd be more interested in the controller abilities of this device. At least it seems to be more interactive than sending noise through a sample and hold module. But on the other hand: For that price I could get almost five dual sample and hold modules :D

    Both plants are vibrant and strong and have beautiful songs. The sick plant does not have the same energy as the healthy plant. The sick plants melodies have a slower rate than the healthy plant which vibrates faster. Thank you.

    healthier plant played in a more continuous flow. "un healthy" plant felt like it was struggling to produce sound, with many quiet pauses, as if to build the momentum to resonate. Bass notes in the healthy plant sounded soft and effortless, whereas in the unhealthy plant, they sounded heavy and blunt.

    Just found your channel, loving the content so far, have been researching similar audio sampling and data gathering etc. Just wondering about EM interference and possible cross talk with the gear set up. Is there a way to isolate the system or use a granular live filtering system to ensure your not picking up side channel interference? Then again side channel vector effects may be relevant to the research as well.

    How are you setting up the Sprout to modulate the arpeggiation and effects?

    • @PlantWave
      @PlantWave  7 лет назад

      Hi Will. The MIDI Sprout puts out both note and CC messages. The CC messages come out on CC80 and can be mapped within a Digital Audio Workstation (in our case, we use Ableton Live) in order to turn knobs on digital instruments and to change effects. In this case, I have it mapped to an arpeggiator and some reverb, which changes the pacing of the notes and adds depth to the texture.

The MIDI Sprout produces both note and CC messages, each controlled by variation of data over different resolutions of time. So, in this way, the effects are not distractions, but detail! wonder if the healthy plant knows that the dying plant is food for it and all its neighbors....
    wait a sec... this premise of assigning arbitrary musical instrument sounds is distracting to the notion of understanding electronic voltages in plants, and how midi commands work. Its just too many arbitrarily assigned variables. And a missed opportunity in not creating interesting, maybe multi-layered, meaningful relationships with our knowledge of plant life and the instrument/sound sources. I mean why not oboe and crunchy death-metal guitar samples?
