I was in college in 1987 and just getting back into comics when this came out. There was nothing like it at the time you can imagine how cool this was at a time with minimal collected editions. I hoped these would be successful but had no idea! I was able to use them to fill in runs of unaffordable books. I was able to get FF 51-300 over the years and the Masterworks gave me access to 1-50. Hope they are always in print!

Dang it Omar. I have the omnibus, the epic collection, some of the original issues, the Penguin book, the Mighty Marvel Masterworks - and now you're making me want to buy this! Can't resist Classic Spidey.

Received mine yesterday. It really is lovely. The updated artwork in ASM 1 & 5 is sometimes subtle, but definitely noticeable. Finer line weights and better detail. Occasionally a color adjustment. Thanks to Cory Sedlmeier and everyone who is driving this Back-to-Print initiative.

I bought the 1st 28 Marvel Masterworks. Even then it was cheaper to buy them because the price of the actual comics was very high. My copy of this particular Marvel Masterworks retailed for $29.95. What I found interesting is on the cover the background behind the title “Amazing Fantasy “ was a sky blue instead of the brown as it appears on the actual cover.
Also of note is on the end pages they would show a picture of the current Masterwork and the cover of the next Masterwork.

I've been buying SOME of the MMW's since day one. I kept buying the X-Men ones, but... now I'm pausing, because Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, etc cover everything in omnibus format. It's killing me to break the run, though!!!

  • @markzimmer5467

Not quite a Masterworks collector since day one; I didn't find out about them until they had published the first three volumes back in 1987-88, but I've been getting them all ever since. Looking forward to the big improvement over my 1988 edition!!
The brown at the top of the cover to Amazing Fantasy 15 and the forest green on the cover to ASM #1 are spot on to the actual 1962 floppies, so it has my seal of approval.

Disappointed to see that they have not used the photographed copies of the original printed editions as they did with the Taschen edition. Similar to your comparison with DVD/Blu-ray, I feel the Taschen is like the using the film negative, and the (Re)Masterworks is like a digital upscale. Sure it is the same image, but it doesn't represent the true originally printed comic.

Looking through the comparison, I didn't notice anything completely different, besides minor changes here and there. I truly appreciate the work that the Marvel team performs to restore these books, but I don't see myself getting an entire set of these instead of the "Amazing Spider-Man" omnibuses I already have. That said, I have the Masterworks from Volume 18 onwards, so I love the format and will continue to reap the benefits of it. But for these minor changes, I don't think I can justify spending the money.

I remember back in the day when my local comic shop had these HARDCOVERS for $10. Sure if was random volumes, but I didn’t care (probably still wouldn’t tbh). I still remember how pissed I was when it went up to $20, then $30. Now they don’t have a single one lol, but PLENTY of omnibus (some at a discount).

I rewatched this video with my 1987 masterworks and compared the same pages that Omar flipped through and I was surprised to see how different the coloring was. For example: that comparison with Aunt May’s hat from issue 1 was green with a purple trim in the ‘87 printing compared to orange and red in the new printing. Background colors, the sky, walls, clothing etc, were different on many panels. I guess if I want more accurate colors I’ll need to update my old Masterworks as the new ones come out.

Naaah.. I didn't see enough reasons to change with this my 2015 copy.. the details you have pointed out are not significant at all to me. One of the biggest differences is, I don't know if you have noticed, the cover of Amazing Fantasy! Look at that building to the right behind Spider-Man! It's like in a completely different angle or something. But it's definitely bigger in one of the versions than the other! :)

Thanks for the review. In my mind i was thinking that 'Remasterworks' meant they would be using touched-up all original scans like in the oversized Taschen books. I guess not. Although it is good that the fidelity is better.

The announcement of this reprint initiative (along with Amazon destroying Comixology)got me back into collecting MMWs in a big way. I had a small collection of black and silver volumes over a decade ago, but I was a poor college student and as they fell OOP I felt I needed the money more. Now with more disposable income I’ve decided to restart with a marble cover collection so I’m now keeping up with current releases and working backwards, and ordering all the new reprints. Such a good time to jump in! I hope demand keeps up.

I remember when the first volume came out. I was hooked. I loved the endpapers that showed the next volume. I missed out on some of the Comicraft issues and some of the original reprints (which bummed me out) The long pause between the original run and the restart in 2003 was torture. I wish they would add more of the Atlas and Timely comics, but I guess it is called "Marvel Masterworks". At this point, I have all but given up on getting any more of those eras from Marvel. At least DC is reprinting their GA and SA in Omni format. They are not as well done as the MM series, but I still get those cost prohibitive issues. Yet another shout out to finish off the GA and SA books please. (Sgt. Fury, Young All-Stars, Marvel Comics, Howling Commandos etc.)
