  • The video shows the different steps of cutting and polishing a gemstone, faceting in particular. Im cutting a large piece of quartz in the portuguese design. I use a facetron machine . The various laps used are nickel bond diamond laps, 100, 260, 360, 600, and 1200 grit laps. The prepolish lap i used is a lightning lap 3000 grit lap.
    The polishing lap i used is a gearloose lapidary creamway lap. The stones finished weight was 192.5 carats and the total time cutting was 30 hrs. and 35 min.. There were 5 tiers of facets on both the pavillion and crown. Total number of facets on this portuguese
    cut design is 177.
    update: 3/12/19 : I have corrected the color of the captions in all my later videos. they have a black background around the letters.

    This is a really transformative cut for common quartz. Usually quartz just comes out looking like cut glass, but this cut really takes advantage of its superior refractive index and really makes it glitter, even if it isn't a stone known for any kind of fire. Lovely.

      Yes, its a great cut , in person its better even.

      Right! I know! Anything that comes from the ground with such precision is desireable. Then a man takes it, appreciates it, and crafts it for his liking. Amazeing.

      Stuart Hollingsead yes but a ruby has a crystalline form as it’s molecules arrange themselves perfectly. Jasper is less elaborate as it forms in bulk pattern. As far as cut stones, I agree with you 100% but you can’t ignore the original beauty a naturally faceted ruby or any gem for this fact, bestows on its discoverer. I like em raw and natural. I would rather a natural facet over a man made facet pattern unless the natural form is flawed. These are my opinions take care and be kind to one another

    • @OnceShy_TwiceBitten
      @OnceShy_TwiceBitten 5 лет назад

      @Stuart Hollingsead only ill informed actually believe its just that. there is more value, look at the hardness, its harder. a diamonds brilliance is generally better. they are rarer. they also have more uses as well,. diamond is used in lots of cutting applications. etc etc. also they have uses in lasers and such as they work different than quartz etc etc. (rubys do as well) they each have dif purposes.
