Tanks very much, just about anything can be cut and polished , the size is the liming factor and this one is close to the max. The softer materials are the harder ones to polish.

just a quick tip for dop transferring: when remobing the first dop on such a large specimen you can simply take it to the saw and cut off the top of the dome where the dop is epoxied. Then just heat up the removed head without worrying about heat transfer to the other dop. Probably save 15 minutes.
Right , I actually did that on the the large portuguese cut I did last year . on this one it didn't seem too much excess material to bother with, plus you have to be careful not to scratch the pav. or polished girdle when you take it to the saw. I just did another large Portuguese quartz but this time I did a better preforming job so the crown end wasn't as big. thanks for commenting.
@@tennpikr74 A while after I posted that I had a sudden concern about cross contamination from the saw blade/water. I suppose you'd have to be extra careful about cleaning the specimen before grinding. Lovely work, by the way. You, and other youtubers like yourself, have inspired me to design a cut of my own. and I can visualize the finished form already. I'll begin researching how to make that table of angles and depths.
@@garrettragsdale4826 hello, i do clean the stone somewhat after sawing but im not extra careful since when i start the grinding im always using a very coarse disc so i never have had contamination on those discs that i know of. congrats on designing your own gem cut. one of these days i may try also. thanks for your comments. do you use any computer programs for designs?

I have one maybe dumb question, have you ever tried to use sealing wax instead of epoxy glue? It departs a lot easier, and you can use it multiple times unlike an epoxy glue.
Thanks very much, i use faceting wax almost everytime but this big gem , i wanted no chance of failure so i used the glue. I do agree the wax is much easier to remove .

Man I am in such awe of your skill and I only ask this out of curiosity, but what were those little seemingly subsurface scratches on the bottom of the gem when it's rotating on the rotating presentation platform at the end? 23:16 it's pretty apparent, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. What is that? Imperfection in the glass?
Thank you. There are imperfections that seemed to be invisible early on then appear as i cut further. They look like hair like inclusions. I did have lots of scratching issues with the cutting and polishing , you might be seeing tiny scratches also.

Maybe different sizes, different qualities up to very expensive versions with better gems and maybe tiny little gold coins or something lol. There are quite a few of us IT nerds with expendable income who would absolutely love the idea of owning our own little actual treasure chest with actual treasures. is it just me or in the segment where you are showing the gem off outdoors you can see some marks on the table that indicate you had contamination in your final polish compound of a much coarser grit?
That is what glass will look like when the sunlight hits it just right. Those marks are invisible everywhere else but direct sunlight. If i had polished further with 100 k or 200k diamond those might not be visible.in the sunlight . Thats my take on it anyway.
That is amazing I love to cut lab made obsidian that is a so good 😊 to see someone else cutting the same style of mineral the saying more to life than a diamond you have prove this that is a ripper well done.

@@danielvecchi9939 No, i have not tried a vinyl lap, actually i have not seen any available. That would be a lap to be used for soft gems which i have not cut many. Im getting good results with the laps i use now. The easiest i have polished would be sunstone feldspar, topaz, zircon, garnet. the harder ones are peridot, cubic zirconia, sapphire, quartz.
Wow that's a whooper! Polishing must have been tedious. I'm wonder where you got your splash guard 3D print? I'm tried of bulldog clipping my splash guard for girdle cuts and I'm ready to chop it up.
Hello, yes polishing and cutting the table was a real bear, it took around 4 to 4.5 hours total. I thought i would never finish the polishing. the splash guard gate is from a faceter named terry gump, here is his email: tfg.lapidary@gmail.com. Thanks for watching.
After you get the facets cut to the 600 grit stage you must prepolish at 3000 or 8000 grit. You can buy precharged laps here: www.shop.lightninglap.com or you can buy copper or zinc laps that you apply diamond paste to. Once you have prepolished the stone i use a lightning lap cerium oxide lap to final polish. The zinc and copper laps can be purchased here: www.gearloose.com. happy cutting.

Yes , not a true gemstone. it is virtually worthless. I did this purely for the challenge of cutting a very large piece. Im just used to calling them all gemstones. I had to choose the glass as anything natural or a precious material would be unobtainable in this size or astronomical in price. I guess i might have been able to find a piece of cz but then it would have cost at least $100 . This piece only cost about $8.00.
this might be a stupid thing to ask but im designing a watch for my brand and I was wondering if their was a way to to tunnel in a 4mm by 12 gold word inside something like moissanite aha :P
Your lap must be a newer one . My 260 is well worn but still works ok for this material. Once a lap has worn down it will start leaving a smoother finish.
Watched this video about 3 times now for reference and it's been a huge help! 2 questions: Did you use a jig to set your dop stick and let the glue harden? Also what kind of dop stick are you using? Thanks in advance!
hello, i did use the jig while the glue was setting up, i used a cone dop as the sphere is round and it would work the best. After i slid the moving part of the jig together to touch the sphere , i have to keep moving the whole thing and turning it so that the glue wont run off or to one side until it set s up, usually about 2 min. or less and it stops flowing. after that i mixed up more glue and built it up around the dop. i didnt want to take any chances for it coming loose.
@@tennpikr74 Okay that makes sense. I have been using my lathe to keep it turning for me, but it's a rather large machine so I would like to find a more practical way of setting the dop stick. Any links to a recommended jig that I could buy? Thanks for the reply!

You say that you ran into several problems with this "gem" because it was a 5.5 on the Mose scale. Is that because the "gem" is to soft or to hard? I know the Mose scale goes from 1-10, with diamond being 10 and ruby/sapphire being 9, and most steels bring in the 5-6 range.

You should make a stand that can fit around the lantern/or lantern can rest in between and get another scaple. To rotate between hot and cooled blades

My 1000 grit polish looks like your 240 grit polish. What am I doing wrong?
Your lap must be a newer one . My 260 is well worn but still works ok for this material. Once a lap has worn down it will start leaving a smoother finish.

What machine do you use? I am wanting to cut a large stone that cannot be smaller than 40mm finished.
I use a facetron machine, The finished stone was 48 mm in diameter.

Yes , the softer gems can be troublesome to polish as they scratch easier than hard ones.

it's looks black but small size pieces it's actually yellow
