That last joke :"I want a divorce", "me too, I'm starving" is a reference to how Chichi and Goku got married. When they were children, Goku promised Chichi he would marry her when the latter asked him but when he met with her a few years later he admitted the only reason he swore to it was because he thought she was talking about food. In the end, because he promised her, he decided to keep the promise and marry her anyway.
I always wondered if the original dub (japanese) phrased his reasoning any different In the english dub, as I recall, after initially admitting that he thought marriage was some kind of food, Goku eventually gives a small speech about how 'sometimes his brain doesn't know what he's saying, but his heart does' and properly(?) asks Chichi to marry him--- as if, in the end, he really did love her and was cognizant of love and romance, atleast to some basic degree
@@mylightobscures Goku initially thought “giving your hand” to someone meant receiving a meal, which is why he promised it to Chi-Chi. The dub’s portrayal of Goku’s acknowledgement of the promise and proposal to Chi-Chi is much more sentimental and romantic than in the original manga/Japanese anime where he basically says to her “well I did make a promise. So, you want to get married?”.
@@mylightobscures As iconic as Dragon Ball’s English dub is, it can’t be ignored that it took liberty with some lines and would add lines into scenes that contradict or change the context of the original text. Z’s dub gets it the worst in that aspect compared to OG Dragon Ball, with Bulma in the dub telling the others that she knew Goku since he was five years old when she actually met him when he was twelve or how the dub makes it seem like Goku wants Krillin to let Vegeta go so he can know what it’s like to receive mercy and thus inspire him to turn over a new leaf one day when in the original he asked Krillin to let Vegeta go so Goku has a chance to fight Vegeta again.
@@MichelGG117 While I will admit that Dragon Ball Kai isn’t perfect, I will whole heartily recommend that English dub over Z’s dub for any newcomer to the series because of its more faithful translation and improved vocal performance from the returning cast members.
“You see PRINCE Vegeta you aren’t dealing with average Saiyan Warrior anymore.” These words which he spewed out so much against Frieza have FINALLY bit him in the ass.
Broly "What is a king to a GOD?" Vegeta "What is a god to a non believer!?" Vegeta's theme music starts to play Vegeta proceeded to get absolutely wrecked in a single attack almost instantly Broly "Do you believe now?" Vegeta "uuh, huhh...... so cool." I have said before and I will say it again, the script that Team Four star writes is astoundingly good. This is one of their best yet!
8:50 THAT is Mercenary Tao, or Tao Pei Pei. He was a villain in the original Dragonball series, an internationally feared assassin known best in the setting for being the brother of the Crane Hermit, the longtime rival of Master Roshi who trained Tien and Chiaotzu, and for being the killer of Mr. Satan's own master after the two of them got drunk in a bar and insulted Tao's hair to his face. The reason he looks like that, though, is because Goku kicked a grenade into his face during their second fight, and he gets trauma flashbacks at the mere thought of Goku, or as shown in a later filler episode, of Gohan for the near-perfect physical resemblance. He's actually one of the strongest Humans ever in the setting, for as memeable as he's become in the years since (I won't spoil it, but you really should watch his filler appearance during the Cell Games, it's one of the most over-the-top 'F*ck This Shit, I'm Out' moments in television history). Edited for grammar error.
@@BJGvideos spoiler of the filler arc below It's basically a Gohan arc where he helps an old man and his granddaughter against Tao, who is now working for a scam organization (they promised the public they had a bunker to protect them from Cell, for a price) and Gohan revealed the scam. Also it's goku looking for the dragon balls prior to the fight with cell and tao knows he can't beat goku so he challenges him to puzzles and if he wins he gets the dragon balls, but they try to run away while goku solves them It doesn't sound so interesting but I recommend watching it, it's very entertaining
So, for some context, all the people that Goku questioned about South Galaxy were actually his old enemies from the original Dragon Ball. Mercenary Tao, Piccolo, Tien, and Pilaf were all enemies of Goku when he was a kid. Tao was the guy with the weird mask over his eyes, and you haven’t seen Pilaf at all. Pilaf was also the very first major villain in all of Dragon Ball.
As an extra layer to the joke, while Goku isn't one to hold a grudge - as him now being friends with Tien and Piccolo would show - it's kind of hilarious that the TFS version seemingly deems "that monster Pilaf!" as especially villainous, when Pilaf and his henchmen were essentially comic relief from the get-go, never to really be taken seriously.
Fun fact: the responses Gohan and Goku came up with to describe Broly (a genuine demon, a true freak) were actually Broly’s responses in the original dubs.
That conversation with Cell is one of the funniest things TFS has ever done, and I can't even tell you why. I just know it makes me laugh every single time.
"He's so cool, But he's so goddam Dumb!" Every Broly fan ever... until the new movie came out and gave him a new infinitely better backstory and personality
@@anthonydeadman Huh? He was agreeing with the guy above. He still thinks Super Broly is better, he just doesn't think it's "infinitely better". You misread hardcore.
@@kmgyening I do think something was lost with super broly as while he is sadistic he’s not as overtly sadistic as Z broly. But infinitely better ain’t far off
Quick notes regarding the ones Goku visited before going to New Planet Vegeta; - The cyborg-human guy is called Mercenary Tao. Goku fought him when he was a kid. He was an extremely infamous and powerful mercenary at that time, and Goku actually got his butt handed to him the first time they fought. However, in their 2nd meeting, Goku had gotten stronger and Tao tried to blow up Goku with a grenade, only for it to be returned right back into Tao's face, resulting in his cybernetics. They met again later when Goku had become an adult at the Martial Arts Tournament where he (again) got his butt handed to him, but this time by his brother's old apprentice, Tien. After that, Tao hasn't exactly been fond of any of the Z-fighters, and especially not Goku (as you saw ^^) - Pilaf is a character that takes too long to describe properly. In a very short summary, he was a goofy character in Dragon Ball who tried to take over the world with his two henchmen, Mai and Shu. Goku and his friends ran into him multiple times, which always resulted in Goku somehow ruining everything for Pilaf. In canon, Goku never really considered Pilaf a threat, and doesn't in fact remember him in Dragon Ball Super. TeamFourStar making him seem like Goku's biggest and most hated enemy is a creation of their own (and I personally love it.)
There is a filler episode before the Cell games where Gohan meets Mercenary Tao. Mercenary Tao was so afraid once he realised whose son Gohan is that he grabbed a tree threw it and jumped on it to get away. As another commenter wrote he was like "F*ck This Shit, I'm Out".
I mean Broly was so crazy popular after this movie that he got two sequels and another movie in the dragon ball super series that makes him canon. As well as giving him a backstory that isn’t Goku cried and that traumatized him as a baby
People are gonna say that the crying baby thing was in the real movie too, but it's actually a mistranslation not present in the original Japanese dialog. There's big post on Kanzenshuu titled "Does Broly even remember Goku as a baby?" that pretty clearly explains this, but to summarize, in the original Japanese dialog, Neither Paragaus nor Broly ever states that Broly actually hates Goku, rather merely that Goku's presence trigger's Broly's abilities ("Does this mean that Broly's instincts as a Saiyan have been awakened by Kakarot's power"), and likewise, it's never said the crying is the cause of it, rather that scene is presented as just how the two were born on the same day and fated to fight, and that Goku's strong wailing making infant Broly sob in spite of the latter being so much more powerful represents Goku's determination ("Broly and Kakarot were born on the same day, one right after the other....the threads of destiny have once again intertwined here" and '[Broly's] just been born and yet his power level is already 10.000...[Goku] power level of only 2, made [Broly] cry!...His power level may be low but that kid at least has guts!")
@@TheForeheadOfDoom666to be fair, I haven’t seen either of those and I love the new one. But I’ve also been a fan of the series for 15 years and just play the games.
I said what Vegeta said in this movie when I saw the Broly movie and saw Gokus POV during his fight with Broly in the new movie- "I never knew I needed something so much until I received it."
Only the people who've watched the original know the significance and irony of that line, not these lazy bums who refuse to watch anything and treat this as the replacement. The reason you are laughing and they are laughing is COMPLETELY different.
So long story short: Any Saiyan with a pure heart that is strong enough can become super saiyan, but Broly is the “Legendary Super Saiyan” that appears every 1000 years.
The whole “he’s so cool but he’s so dumb” reflects the general consensus towards Broly. The Goku crying thing IS a major part of his background, but the original Broly film is often retroactively associated with the failings of the following 2. Here are the meanings behind each part of Broly’s character moments/traits: - Broly associates Goku’s crying with the worst moment of his life. He was denied his birthright by strength, cast off to die with only his father, and even lost his home - Broly has been manipulated since childhood, hence the control on Paragus’ hand which would forcefully make Broly docile - Part or the initial reason Broly snaps is because of his initial staredown with Goku. Broly tried to dominate him by flexing his ki/pressure, and Goku more than easily matched him - Broly overall reflects Saiyan culture to its natural conclusion. Saiyans believe in might over right and the birthright of the mighty. Broly is the strongest and yet Goku simply rejects that as a reason to stand down, likewise, the more the Z warriors resist, the more Broly would devolve as his sense of reason gave way to his ego - This is also reflected with Broly’s clothing. He’s adorned in gold and fine robes to reflect how “regal” he would be by Saiyan standards. As the most powerful, and as the legendary super Saiyan, he would likely have been the new king by choice if not by force (and acceptance of that force by the public), or even simply because he’d likely have been the one to kill Frieza - You can also see the Saiyan side of him as a conquerer, sadistic destroyer, and even his fighting style which is more brutal than the standard Z warrior. Much more akin to Bardock and Future Gohan by comparison. - the original film is not where the “kakarot” meme originates, as Broly could still form clear sentences and had a sense of humor. When asked for mercy he replied “Mercy? Is that another word for coffin?” - Broly’s fatal wound from Goku punching him, was in the same place he was stabbed (which was successful as a child) so the theme of destiny comes back into play. Destined to be the strongest, destined to with his father as a reject of the saiyans Overall there’s some depth to the original Broly movie. I’m very tired while typing this so I might have missed some stuff AND worded this poorly. I hope I gave the gist of why people vouch for Movie 8 Broly specifically. Even then I prefer DBS Broly personally, but I understand why many don’t. I still prefer movie 12 Gogeta’s seriousness to any other portrayal, despite DBS Gogeta not being too far off overall. Thanks for reading!
Pilaf is the least imposing/effective of the antagonists Goku brought up in that scene. That's why it's funny that Goku would describe him the way he did.
Ahh Broly, the movie that stirred up so controversy that 25 whole years later they gave it a complete reboot and made Broly Canon. Glad to see you react to this and can't wait to see you react to the newest one!
I was just about to comment this. Broly was so well-received that Toriyama had to invent a whole new subtype of Saiyan to explain him, and then he had to reboot him when Super started making movies that were canon. The man loved the character so much. XD I don't blame him. Broly is a pretty awesome concept for a character. And I'm glad the 'Goku cried for 3 hours' motivation was removed when he was rebooted.
@@AdeptusCaeiusIII Toriyama only made his design, not the writing, and he's only been canonized because Super is all about audience pandering and Toei knows full well how popular he is in the west.
'When Broly?' was a running joke in the TFS Community for the longest time, cuz everyone loved the old Broly so much without ever thinking about him critically that they would just ask the team at conventions all the time.
"Princess Tru~nks!" - "Please no..." - "You lied to me!" - "I did No. Such. Thing!" - "You Dirty Boy!" - [Moment of Silent Horror] - "Goku! Get Me Off This Planet Right Now! I'm Serious! Instant Transmission Me!" ~ (20:26) This still gets me laughing like a hyena. The sheer horror Trunks had (lol) 🤣🤣🤣
If you're wondering who the asian cyborg is at 9:00, that's Mercenary Tao, an assassin that was sent to kill Goku during the original Dragon Ball show. He is actually one of three characters to have canonically beaten Goku. That being said, this happened way back during the second arc of the show when Goku was still a kid. The man has been _woefully_ outclassed by Goku since he defeated him the first time.
18:33 another little reference. Some very young kids were interviewed at school about what they wanted to be when they grew up. The responses got viral on the internet because of one particular answer In between 2 kids saying they wanted to be an astronaut, and a cook, along with the respective drawings of how they would look as an astronaut or a cook, there was the drawing of a very buff guy. This kid said that he wanted to be Broly when he grew up. Why? Because "Broly's power is Maximum"
I remember growing up thinking it was so silly that Broly hated Goku because as babies, Goku cried too much. Later on I watched a Netflix series about this child that tried to kill his sister because she cried too much. The boy never acted on it , the series had something to do with mental disorders. I quickly thought of Broly & went…”oh…my…god” 😂 The new Broly’s backstory is technically better writing but I’m kinda gonna miss that untamed rage 😡
That is a condition called “Misophonia;” essentially hearing a certain sound for too long at a young enough age can cause the “fight-or-flight” instincts to go into overdrive whenever near the source of the sound. That can result with the victim either running away from the source or going into a blind rage against the source.
The guy that was non stop screaming when Goku teleported to him, with the robot eyes was Mercenary Tao. He was a minor antagonist who left a big impression. Greatest fighter in the Red Ribbon army (well, not technically a member, being a mercenary) and he beat the dogshit out of Goku when they first met. Nearly killed him. He was bested by his own hubris
1. If you remmeber Broly was referenced in the first Bardock movie, bei g the Saiyan baby next to Goku with a power level of 10K 2. The DBS movie that effectively reboots Broly's character and makes him canon is *so good* and it genuinely makes Broly a better character
The Story Goes Broly is *literally* the end product of "special strength" aka "bless their heart", a fan asked Toriyama what Goku would have been like if he hadn't bumped his head and met Chichi, and Broly was born.
The funny thing is Z Broly talks a lot more than most people give him credit at least in his first movie, it's just a lot of the things he says are sadistic. He's even more knowledgeable than some describe him, such as when he knew the space pod can only hold one person and his father was going to abandon him and when he knew Goku was absorbing energy from the others.
The guy screaming his head off is Tao Pai, a Mercenary and Martial Arts Master in the OG Dragonball. When Goku was a kid, Tao tried to kill him with a grenade, so Goku kicked the grenade back at him and it blew up, nearly killing him and forcing him to replace like 90% of his body with cybernetics. He was screaming because he is forever terrified of Goku and thought he was back to finish the job.
Oh snaps! This is the one I was waiting for! Broly is now canon in the Dragon Ball series. However, his backstory changed for the better now. Regardless, the abridged version was hilarious! Hope you two like it! 😂💪
Broly was probably everyone's first time while watching this series that a power-up felt like....a power-up. I mean the guy EXPLODES HIMSELF. His body tears itself open
Just noticed chi-chi says theres only 2 and a half saiyans on earth. Even if shes not counting future trunks. That means she completely forgot about baby trunks who is also half saiyan
ACTUALLY contrary to popular belief, Goku’s crying is like a traumatic trigger for him. Because he was crying AS he was being stabbed (the knife did not break in the anime).
I really hate to contradict you because it is a good explanation but there’s nothing in the actual text of the film or the supplementary material to prove or support that explanation. Is it possible that is what they intended? Absolutely but given the lack of evidence to support it, it’s fanon
@@grigori9061 Everything about the actual story is Fanon. They don’t even explain why he hates him other than MAYBE that they were born on the same day. The other idea that it’s just the crying is equally unproven. But at least mine makes contextual sense considering it’s far from the first time a character has had PTSD.
As far as I'm concerned, this movie has the single funniest scene in all of DBZA. That scene where they all attack Broly and the music and sound effects cut out and you just hear a bunch of grunting and light slapping sounds.. Kills me every time.
You're dead on about TFS using Vegeta as a mouthpiece for the fanbase in this movie! Fun as this movie is, you'll be pleased to know it's non-canon and the new Broly introduced in Dragonball Super has a *much* better backstory to him!
29:13 the other world tournament is a fighting tournament were all the dead people of history participate to see whos the strongest one. Thats why South Kai has more options now, because everyone in his galaxy is now dead.
If you liked DBZ Abridged, they have a series where they go through the entire story of Final Fantasy 7 in a similar manner. It's called Final Fantasy 7 Machinabridged.
Mercenary Tao was one of the villains of the villains of the Red Ribbon Arc in the original DB. Pilaf is the villain of the first DB arc. Tien was introduced as an antagonist and he was trained by Tao's older brother (the Crane hermit/Roshi's rival). Goku is the reason he's a cyborg now (he killed a lot of his enemies as a kid- hence the footage of Gero's son in a previous episode). Piccolo was the final villain of DB. Obviously, none of them has the power to destroy a galaxy.
Also, Vegeta was channeling the fan base. DBZ fans had a love/hate going with Broly until his character was rebooted in Dragonball Super. DBS Broly on the other hand is very compelling by comparison, and he's in arguably the best Dragonball movie.
You have to know this: The DBZA Crew was dreading this movie. For years, Fans were NOT shutting up and constantly asked for it 'WHEN BROLY?!' They knew there were such high expectations because the old Broly, even though it was a very flawed movie had a very strong fanbase and they really were stressing themselves out writing the Script for this. Takahata010 - voice of Cell and many others explicitly said it was one of the hardest undertakings of their whole Careers as writers and voice actors. So it is really heartwarming this had become their most viewed movie ever.
Ah yes. Broly. A villain who constantly evolves and grows as the fight is progressing. So cool. But also, his main drive is a memory of a crying infant in a pod next to him. So dumb. I liked that we got to see Gohan and Trunks do the Masenko together. That was nice. Little Future Student and Past Master interaction. Well, Past Master of the Future. Future Master of the Past. Complicated. Moving on, Broly was eventually redone and made canon in a movie many, many years later in the Dragon Ball Super canon.
The guy screaming at 8:49 is Mercenary Tao, a character from OG Dragon Ball who showed up again in Z during Cell Games filler. The reason he's screaming is because the last time he saw Goku, the monkey tailed boy... Oh hold on, let me check my notes real quick... Ahem, he "Wrecked his shit."
A lot of the references here are kinda hard to get without expansive knowledge of the franchise, so here are some hints. - The cybernetic guy is called Tao Pai Pai and he was a mercenary hired by the Red Ribbon army to kill Goku in the og Dragonball. He beat Goku in their first match, but Goku won the rematch and kicked a Grenade in his face. He later returns as a cyborg but gets beaten by Tien. He is also the brother of the master of the crane school of martial arts, who was a long term rival of Master Roshi and trained Tien and Chiatzou before they defected to Master Roshi. Tao Pai Pai returns in a filler episode in Z where he meets Gohan and gets afraid cause he looks a lot like Goku. The other guys mentioned are also all villains from the og Dragonball. - When Goku says "I was gona save this for Cell, but"... is a reference to what happens during the Cell games, wont say what for obvious spoilers. - The "pretty sure the next movie is yours" is a reference to DBZ Movie 9 where Gohan takes over the main role, sadly TFS never got around to make it - the other world tournament is a reference to a filler in Z that occurs after the Cell games - Chichi wanting a divorce and Goku thinking it's food is a reference to how they got married. In the og DB Chichi as a child asks Goku to marry her and he agrees because he thinks marriage is food. Later Chichi returns to fulfill the promise and Goku agrees to marry her because he didn't want to break it.
i love the part where gohan and trunks both hit broly with the masenko because that’s piccolo’s move. piccolo taught it to gohan, and future gohan taught it to future trunks.
@9:00 the reason thats funny is because thats one of Goku's villains as a kid. He screaming because Goku is the one who messed up his face with a grenade which why he has robotics eyes and ears. After Goku killed The Red Ribbon Army (DBZ verson of Nazi) he went in hiding knowing how terrifying Goku can get once hes angery
If you get around to watching the “Dragonball Super: Super Hero” movie it focuses a lot on the familial ties between Piccolo and Gohan. The English dub even has Piccolo refer to Pans (Gohans daughter) teacher by name, which shows how often he’s the one to pick her up from school. Goku and Vegita appear in the movie, but they aren’t involved with the main plot at all.
Ya know I always took broly taking gokus crying as a ptsd trigger for the day he was born. like he recognized his ki signature. He was stabbed thrown in a ditch then had his planet exploding on top him. All in less than 24 hrs. Then he was experimented on by his father to be controlled and if he gets too angry he has to release energy so he doesn’t explode. Honestly the dudes kinda like vegeta was in the sayian arc. Just was more savage brutal and badass lmao
The original line from the movie was literally in response to 'you're a monster!': 'No... The DEVIL!' So, in the Death Battle, Broly steals Hulk's line 'You wouldn't like me when I'm angry', and Hulk steals Broly's line 'Not a monster. The Devil.' There are a lot of fun easter eggs people use to reference the original Broly movie. 'My power is maximum' is another one that is memorable.
Little hidden joke most people won’t get. When chi chi said to goku that she would show him. Tfs had a gaming channel thing going on at that time called “goku gonna show you” Would recommend their gaming channel stuff in the “renegade for life” playlist. Gold
In the canon of the Broly movie it was more like his Power was rising so much that he was on the verge of exploding at all times. So it wasn't really Goku that defeted him with a punch, it was more like because Goku pumped more energy into Broly, that Broly could not contain the power anymore and started to explode. At least that is what makes the most sense. As far as I know they really went with the whole "How can his body contain this much power?" In any other way, no one would have won against him The beating they got in the movie was even greater. It is also debatable if Broly is Stronger than cell just because he fought against all of them at the same time which none of the fighters in dragon ball normally do (Also pretty controversial at the time). Even if the fate of the planet is on the line.
Basically Goku hit Broly's old knife wound out of dumb luck, and that caused a breach that made Broly go critical like a reactor and explode from his own power blowing from the inside out.
Some context for "Coulda been Beerus?" Beerus is the Universe 7(the universe Dragon Ball is set in) God of Destruction. He is the fucker of Goku's shit and the strongest God of Destruction. He's is a pivotal character in Super. Basically takes Goku and Vegeta under his wing. Well Whis does but I know Beerus secretly likes them. Also I'd like to shout-out Connor McKinnley. He voices Paragus and is apart of the Unexpectables DnD Podcast. Dude is a really good voice actor he's also apart of The Ties That Bind DnD Podcast. He plays a human Warlock and I cannot iterate that he is a really good voice actor.
17:52-18:03 Actually, this is Beerus's theme, hilariously enough. That nane really isn't going to matter to you, though, because he doesn't show up until Super, which DBZA didn't touch beyond a few clips. Tbf, he was also name dropped in the DBZA version of this movie. In the original, he didn't exist yet, so he wasn't lol.
couple of fun facts: The line "My power is Maximum" is a reference to a news article, where a kid was asked who his favorite fictional character was (or super hero or something along those lines) and he said Broly, "because his power is maximum". accompanied by a childs drawing of broly, it was pretty funny and cute lol. also, this is not a Team Four Star story, or made up for comedic purposes. unfortunately, the ACTUAL lore of this movie, is that Broly hates Kakarot, due to his constant and endless crying in the maternity ward. that is literally it. he is an awesomely designed character, but his backstory is beyond stupid. thats why people like DB Super Broly a lot more, they retconned his lore and made him much cooler. sidenote: do you all plan on watching the Cell VS Videos? i hope so, because they are great!
You know, as I continue to follow this amazing reaction series of yours, I'm beginning to think that Hellsing Ultimate Abridged by Team Four Star might just be the next series you guys should give a go. Something tells me it'll be a hit. 😂
As you may have guessed, Abridged Broly is full of in jokes related to the original Broly movie, its sequel, and general fan reactions to Broly the character. -Basically, viewpoints on Broly are severely divided. Some people love him for being so ridiculously strong (cut from the Abridged is him tanking a Kamahameha blast point blank without blocking with zero effect: they just cut to him grabbing Goku, which happened afterward) and having some killer lines (When called a monster, Broly replies he is 'Not a monster, but the devil', which gets a joke in the Abridged). The other side is that Broly is one dimensional and everything wrong with Dragon Ball Z, all sizzle and no steak, having no character beyond being impossibly strong, muscled beyond belief, and screaming, as well as having a ridiculous motivation. Of course, when the movie originally released, it was the former that was much stronger, which led to Broly being the second villain to get a sequel movie (and technically a third) and showing up in all sorts of Dragon Ball side media, which prompted even more backlash from those who dislike him. -So, of course, when the Abridged series started in earnest, Team Four Star was constantly asked "When are you Abridging Broly", which got shortened to meme shorthand of "When Broly." This gets referenced in the episode, where Broly is all NOW BROLY. -The 'Broly hates Goku because crying baby Goku traumatized baby Broly' is, as others have said, the plot in the original movie. Yes, seriously. Hence Vegeta, who in the OG source material is just absolutely terrified to the point of being unable to fight because Broly is THE Legendary Super Saiyan, is representing both viewpoints of Broly's likers and dislikers: "He's so cool, but he's so stupid!" The characters all saying how they wanted past movie villains to come back is again riffing on the viewpoints of Broly non-fans and their opinion on Broly's overhyped fandom and paper thin character. -Tied to the above, in the OG movie Broly is IMMEDIATELY hostile when Goku shows up, but Paragus has put a mind control crown on his head to keep him under control, but after hearing Goku's saiyan name he finally gets so mad he overwhelms the crown and transforms in rage. The Abridged makes him calm and snarky and not recognizing Goku as Kakarot until the name is said, at which point he snaps, mocking, again, the rather stupid motivation of the OG source material. -In the OG source material, the dagger didn't break, and so Broly was stabbed, but he was so strong as an infant he survived and managed to subconsciously save himself and his father when Freiza swiftly blew up planet Vegeta very shortly afterwards. The problem was that Broly was so insanely strong Paragus couldn't control him, hence South Galaxy was destroyed and Paragus put the mind control crown on him. This is a joke on the basis that Goku ignored being shot as a kid when Dragon Ball was much more cartoony, and by that logic Broly would be immune to a simple knife. -The film makes "Legendary Super Saiyan" a wholly separate power up state, whereas Goku and co are just using "Super Saiyan", which is a 'lesser' power up that all Saiyans can theoretically access. Legendary Super Saiyan is demonstrated by the green aura (mentioned in the film) and tinge to Broly's hair, and the absolutely gigantic muscle growth: it basically functions like the Super Saiyan Grade 3 we saw Trunks try and use against Cell, except with zero loss of speed. While I don't believe it is canon, some sources say that the state acts like a perpetual motion machine and once entered just keeps increasing without limit or end, hence Broly's power is virtually limitless if he has enough time. When Broly returned for his sequel film, he demonstrated use of the basic Super Saiyan form as well before again powering up into Legendary. -There's a meme in Dragon Ball fandom of some kid who for a school assignment (for 'who do you admire' I think) wrote down "Broly. His power is maximum." This gets multiple jokes made about it in the abridged episode (and in the credits song sung by Lanipator). -In the OG movie the group were just having a party in the park: Abridged changed it to "Yajirobe and Korin's wedding", the relationship also being a complete invention of the Abridged series. The small green aliens were just traditional enslaved victims in the OG movie, instead of eager masochists (and yeah, Broly still blew up their planet). -Goku going around talking to Cell and Mercenary Tao (a Dragon Ball pre Z villain) is added by the abridged team. All of the movies are essentially non-canon, as they reflected what was happening in the manga at the time of release, and most of the movies (save 5, 9, and 13) basically pretend like the villains who were in the canon series just weren't around. -Broly being reduced to just saying "Kakarot" at the end is a riff on Broly's second film appearance, where he's gone so mad that, whereas in the first film he could speak and got some great lines, in the second film all he could do for the most part is snarl and scream "KAKAROT(TO)!" over and over, which was used as more evidence by Broly's dislikers of how inferior a character he was. -Goku saying "I think it's your movie next" is a fourth wall breaking riff that the next film, Movie 9, had Gohan as the main hero. UNFORTUNATELY... -Between burnout, constant issues with copyrights, and the fact that they foreshadowed Movie 9 for YEARS (with Abridged making the villain of 9 literally sealed inside King Kai's little planet and getting occasional lines all the way back when Goku first meets King Kai), Team Four Star ultimately gave up the Abridging of the series after completing Episode 60 and the Cell Saga, and hence, we never got Abridged Movie 9, so now that line is much harsher in hindsight. Basically, Team Four Star felt that they simply could not live up to the hype they'd accidentally created. There was a fan project that took a crack at it, though. -It's never been exactly clear how Goku defeated Broly; even summaries on wikis don't nail it down. I believe it's suggested that Goku gathered all the energy of all his companions and his own, and punched Broly in his 'stomach wound' where he was stabbed and somehow 'injected' all the energy into Broly, and that proved to be too much for even Broly's body and the combined energies exploded him from within, or the two energies basically fought 'inside' Broly and the combined hero energy won out (some translations of Goku's line after Broly explodes is something along the lines of "Our power won!") Basically Goku exploited that Broly had no regenerating ability, but again, it has never been made solidly clear exactly HOW the punch defeated Broly, which, again, is fuel for the dislikers: it took a deus ex machina to beat him. -In any case, when Dragon Ball decided to revive the character of Broly in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Akira Toiryama himself explicitly reworked his origin and character to try and deal with the criticisms. Most say he succeeded, and hence DBS Broly is a completely different character from DBZ Movie Broly and while DBZ Movie Broly is non canon, DBS Broly is considered to be so.
Don’t know if y’all caught it, but the credit song was sung by Lanipator. He’s pretty good at singing, and said he had to try really hard to make Krillin’s karaoke be off key
Mercenary Tao(the guy that was screaming while Goku was talking to him) was screaming because of PTSD. He used to be a regular human assassin. Then Goku happened.
New Vegeta, named after planet Vegeta, Re-named after King Vegeta, father of King Vegeta the second, father of King Vegeta the third, Father of Prince Vegeta who we all know and love
The guy who was screaming is actually a guy from the original dragon ball series......Goku beat him up badly that's why he's screaming about seeing him again.
Ok so if it makes it feel any less stupid, there’s a popular headcannon going around about why Broly is so triggered by Goku that I’d like to share: Basically, it’s not (only) that Broly hated hearing baby Goku’s nonstop crying, it’s also that he associates that crying with the traumatic events that followed afterwards. The execution attempt by King Vegeta, which in the actual movie he managed to pierce baby Broly’s stomach and leave a scar (which is also the reason he went down after Goku punched him there with everyone energy), then being dumped in a hole like trash along with his father and finally being left to die as planet Vegeta explodes and then saving himself and Paragus by a hair’s breath. Yeah, I’d too have enough PTSD for the next twenty lives, don’t you think? P.D.: Now that you've met Z Broly you should totally check out the short film: Legends: A Dragon Ball Tale sometime in the future
The original music for when Broly turns legendary is Pantera 10s and fits too well (in the English dub) How I was introduced to heavier music than hard rock
I always wondered if the original dub (japanese) phrased his reasoning any different
In the english dub, as I recall, after initially admitting that he thought marriage was some kind of food, Goku eventually gives a small speech about how 'sometimes his brain doesn't know what he's saying, but his heart does' and properly(?) asks Chichi to marry him--- as if, in the end, he really did love her and was cognizant of love and romance, atleast to some basic degree
@@theassortedhobbyist Aw man... I figured as much
@@mylightobscures As iconic as Dragon Ball’s English dub is, it can’t be ignored that it took liberty with some lines and would add lines into scenes that contradict or change the context of the original text.
Broly "What is a king to a GOD?"
Vegeta "What is a god to a non believer!?" Vegeta's theme music starts to play
Vegeta proceeded to get absolutely wrecked in a single attack almost instantly
Broly "Do you believe now?"
Vegeta "uuh, huhh...... so cool."
I have said before and I will say it again, the script that Team Four star writes is astoundingly good. This is one of their best yet!
They are very clever they used the chorus of the Kanye West/Jay-Z song "No Church In The Wild" and made it sound cool
Those lines are so epic they should have been in the actual movie.
Fun fact: TFS originally wanted Markiplier to voice Broly. But that didn’t happen because of Mark’s busy schedule.
No efn way for real?!
That would have been glorious!
Seriously? Huh that’s an interesting thought.
Wait really? Not gonna lie hearing him voice broly would've been magnificent
Markiplier has been on record saying he likes DBZA specifically the portrayal of Goku.
I love that filler episode. It's a shame most people skip it.
I really enjoyed that filler arc as a kid to be fair
I only read the manga. Can you tell me what he does during that? You can space way down so they can avoid reading it.
@@BJGvideos spoiler of the filler arc below
It's basically a Gohan arc where he helps an old man and his granddaughter against Tao, who is now working for a scam organization (they promised the public they had a bunker to protect them from Cell, for a price) and Gohan revealed the scam.
Also it's goku looking for the dragon balls prior to the fight with cell and tao knows he can't beat goku so he challenges him to puzzles and if he wins he gets the dragon balls, but they try to run away while goku solves them
It doesn't sound so interesting but I recommend watching it, it's very entertaining
@@aelere7702 Oh awesome
So, for some context, all the people that Goku questioned about South Galaxy were actually his old enemies from the original Dragon Ball. Mercenary Tao, Piccolo, Tien, and Pilaf were all enemies of Goku when he was a kid. Tao was the guy with the weird mask over his eyes, and you haven’t seen Pilaf at all. Pilaf was also the very first major villain in all of Dragon Ball.
He would’ve asked Monster Carrot but ya know.
@@bradcarver8127 I think he died when Master Roshi blew up the moon in OG Dragon Ball

"Our talks are nice."

GO BROLY GO GO
Quick notes regarding the ones Goku visited before going to New Planet Vegeta;
- The cyborg-human guy is called Mercenary Tao. After that, Tao hasn't exactly been fond of any of the Z-fighters, and especially not Goku (as you saw ^^)
- Pilaf is a character that takes too long to describe properly.
Pilaf Gang is basically what would happen if the Team Rocket trio from the Pokémon anime was the entire organization and Meowth was an imp.
I mean Broly was so crazy popular after this movie that he got two sequels and another movie in the dragon ball super series that makes him canon. As well as giving him a backstory that isn’t Goku cried and that traumatized him as a baby
OH MY GOD HES SO. GOD. DAMNED. COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT HE'S SO DUMB!
Huh, the English dub fans would’ve had a better response to Broly if the translation team properly translated the movie.
The way you guys have actually fallen in love with the series and it’s characters I’d love to see your reaction to the 2019 Broly Movie
They gotta watch buu saga and dragon ball super for that
@@TheForeheadOfDoom666to be fair, I haven’t seen either of those and I love the new one. But I’ve also been a fan of the series for 15 years and just play the games.

I said what Vegeta said in this movie when I saw the Broly movie and saw Gokus POV during his fight with Broly in the new movie- "I never knew I needed something so much until I received it."
Abridged≠Dbz
9:35 "you're gonna be the death of me"
Foreshadowing 🤣
Only the people who've watched the original know the significance and irony of that line, not these lazy bums who refuse to watch anything and treat this as the replacement.
The reason you are laughing and they are laughing is COMPLETELY different.
TFS just hating Broly resulted in one of the best things they've made.
8:59 Definitely a “only saw Z, who this?” moment.
Lmao
So long story short: Any Saiyan with a pure heart that is strong enough can become super saiyan, but Broly is the “Legendary Super Saiyan” that appears every 1000 years.
The whole “he’s so cool but he’s so dumb” reflects the general consensus towards Broly.
The Goku crying thing IS a major part of his background, but the original Broly film is often retroactively associated with the failings of the following 2.
Here are the meanings behind each part of Broly’s character moments/traits:
- Broly associates Goku’s crying with the worst moment of his life. He was denied his birthright by strength, cast off to die with only his father, and even lost his home
- Broly has been manipulated since childhood, hence the control on Paragus’ hand which would forcefully make Broly docile
- Part or the initial reason Broly snaps is because of his initial staredown with Goku. Broly tried to dominate him by flexing his ki/pressure, and Goku more than easily matched him
- Broly overall reflects Saiyan culture to its natural conclusion. Saiyans believe in might over right and the birthright of the mighty. Broly is the strongest and yet Goku simply rejects that as a reason to stand down, likewise, the more the Z warriors resist, the more Broly would devolve as his sense of reason gave way to his ego
- This is also reflected with Broly’s clothing. He’s adorned in gold and fine robes to reflect how “regal” he would be by Saiyan standards. As the most powerful, and as the legendary super Saiyan, he would likely have been the new king by choice if not by force (and acceptance of that force by the public), or even simply because he’d likely have been the one to kill Frieza
- You can also see the Saiyan side of him as a conquerer, sadistic destroyer, and even his fighting style which is more brutal than the standard Z warrior. Much more akin to Bardock and Future Gohan by comparison.
- the original film is not where the “kakarot” meme originates, as Broly could still form clear sentences and had a sense of humor. When asked for mercy he replied “Mercy? Is that another word for coffin?”
- Broly’s fatal wound from Goku punching him, was in the same place he was stabbed (which was successful as a child) so the theme of destiny comes back into play. Destined to be the strongest, destined to with his father as a reject of the saiyans
Overall there’s some depth to the original Broly movie.
24:00 my favorite part of the movie the sounds of them trying to hit him just gets to me everytime
@@AdeptusCaeiusIII
Toriyama only made his design, not the writing, and he's only been canonized because Super is all about audience pandering and Toei knows full well how popular he is in the west.
'When Broly?' was a running joke in the TFS Community for the longest time, cuz everyone loved the old Broly so much without ever thinking about him critically that they would just ask the team at conventions all the time.
22:49 Unfortunately TFS never got around to do the Bojack movie so Gohan didn't get his own movie in abridged.
Ah Goku.. typical bad father. Making promises he can't fulfill to his son 😢
Mercenary Tao, or the screaming guy, is an OG antagonist from Dragon Ball and some DBZ filler episodes
22:47 the most regrettable line ever
Yeah, sucks they built up Bojack for years, but no movie, but these things happen
"Princess Tru~nks!" - "Please no..." - "You lied to me!" - "I did No. Such. Thing!" - "You Dirty Boy!" - [Moment of Silent Horror] - "Goku! Get Me Off This Planet Right Now! I'm Serious! Instant Transmission Me!" ~ (20:26)
This still gets me laughing like a hyena. The sheer horror Trunks had (lol) 🤣🤣🤣
Broly's power level was 10,000 when he was born. For reference, Bardock had the same power level when he died.
The responses got viral on the internet because of one particular answer
In between 2 kids saying they wanted to be an astronaut, and a cook, along with the respective drawings of how they would look as an astronaut or a cook, there was the drawing of a very buff guy.
By the way, the music that plays when Broly transformed is called Beerus's Madness
1. If you remmeber Broly was referenced in the first Bardock movie, bei g the Saiyan baby next to Goku with a power level of 10K
Broly's casual voice had my dying of laughter xD LIke WHY did they go with that haha
True bro was saying some weird shit in og
Yeah 2nd coming and Bio Broly kinda ruined him forever, OG Broly was fire, aside from the backstory.
Pilaf, Mercenary Tao, Tien, and King Piccolo/Piccolo Jr. (Our Piccolo) were the main antagonists of each saga of the OG Dragon Ball series (Pre Z).
Goku's big idea to find out who destroyed South Galaxy was to ask all the previous Earth-based villains from DBZ and original Dragon Ball...
Oh snaps! This is the one I was waiting for! Broly is now canon in the Dragon Ball series. However, his backstory changed for the better now. Regardless, the abridged version was hilarious! Hope you two like it! 😂💪
He's so cool but he's so dumb!!

ACTUALLY contrary to popular belief, Goku’s crying is like a traumatic trigger for him. Because he was crying AS he was being stabbed (the knife did not break in the anime).
😨

The scariest part about this scene was that broly KNEW trunks was a boy.

Fun fact, Krillin singing horribly is hilarious considering Lani is an amazing singer.
I love kens reaction to Broly before he transforms.
In one of the English dubs, Vegeta called Bardock a great scientist (he wasn't, and the line is a meme in the fan base).
Also, Vegeta was channeling the fan base. DBZ fans had a love/hate going with Broly until his character was rebooted in Dragonball Super.
DBS Broly on the other hand is very compelling by comparison, and he's in arguably the best Dragonball movie.
You have to know this:
The DBZA Crew was dreading this movie. For years, Fans were NOT shutting up and constantly asked for it 'WHEN BROLY?!'
They knew there were such high expectations because the old Broly, even though it was a very flawed movie had a very strong fanbase and they really were stressing themselves out writing the Script for this.
Piccolos endearing parenting style is actually something they picked up in Dragonball Super.
How many caught the king kai foreshadowing... "He'll be the death of me"
"Oooh HARDER DADDY!"
"Now that one was what you thought it was..."
LMAO
- The "pretty sure the next movie is yours" is a reference to DBZ Movie 9 where Gohan takes over the main role, sadly TFS never got around to make it
- the other world tournament is a reference to a filler in Z that occurs after the Cell games
- Chichi wanting a divorce and Goku thinking it's food is a reference to how they got married.
The best thing about this special when broly said "broly's wife?" Trunks didnt deny it prison style he's broly's bitch now
"That man is going to be the death of me" Oh king Kai you poor fool lol
The original line from the movie was literally in response to 'you're a monster!': 'No... The DEVIL!'
So, in the Death Battle, Broly steals Hulk's line 'You wouldn't like me when I'm angry', and Hulk steals Broly's line 'Not a monster. The Devil.'
There are a lot of fun easter eggs people use to reference the original Broly movie. 'My power is maximum' is another one that is memorable.
Little hidden joke most people won’t get. When chi chi said to goku that she would show him. Tfs had a gaming channel thing going on at that time called “goku gonna show you”
Would recommend their gaming channel stuff in the “renegade for life” playlist.
The spot Goku punched him was also the place Brody was stabbed as a baby, so there was that too.
Basically Goku hit Broly's old knife wound out of dumb luck, and that caused a breach that made Broly go critical like a reactor and explode from his own power blowing from the inside out.
22:46, this aged perfectly 🙂
The guy guy that was seaming was a villian from the original Dragon Ball that took place when goku was a child.
"I think it's your movie next"
Oh how sad that line has gotten at this point
9:00-9:08 That's Mercenary Tao, a villain from OG DragonBall.
Whenever I rewatch this movie, I like the Broly song at the end even better than before.
Nick's delivery really is Maximum in this!
couple of fun facts:
The line "My power is Maximum" is a reference to a news article, where a kid was asked who his favorite fictional character was (or super hero or something along those lines) and he said Broly, "because his power is maximum". accompanied by a childs drawing of broly, it was pretty funny and cute lol.
also, this is not a Team Four Star story, or made up for comedic purposes. unfortunately, the ACTUAL lore of this movie, is that Broly hates Kakarot, due to his constant and endless crying in the maternity ward. that is literally it. he is an awesomely designed character, but his backstory is beyond stupid. thats why people like DB Super Broly a lot more, they retconned his lore and made him much cooler.
sidenote: do you all plan on watching the Cell VS Videos? i hope so, because they are great!
You know, as I continue to follow this amazing reaction series of yours, I'm beginning to think that Hellsing Ultimate Abridged by Team Four Star might just be the next series you guys should give a go. Something tells me it'll be a hit. 😂
The "my power is maximum" jokes were based on a child's drawing of broly with the text "his power is maximum"
Funfact: The Maximum bit is from a kid quoted in a newspaper about what superhero he wants to be. He said Broly because his power is "Maximum."
A God to a non-believer... Is still a God... Over a fool.
The guy who was screaming is actually a guy from the original dragon ball series......Goku beat him up badly that's why he's screaming about seeing him again.
What is God to a non-Believer?
What is a non-Believer to a God?
and let me just check and..........yep shemoshins are among the most replayed.
Ok so if it makes it feel any less stupid, there’s a popular headcannon going around about why Broly is so triggered by Goku that I’d like to share:
Basically, it’s not (only) that Broly hated hearing baby Goku’s nonstop crying, it’s also that he associates that crying with the traumatic events that followed afterwards.
The original music for when Broly turns legendary is Pantera 10s and fits too well (in the English dub)
How I was introduced to heavier music than hard rock
Vegeta actually represented the entire fandom here XD
You aren’t dealing with the average saiyan
Vegeta: noooooooo
