I just saw them sing this in Las Vegas. They are currently part of the 'Happy Together' tour with The Turtles. Check it out if it comes to your area. ✌️
40 years working construction I can relate to this so much. When I left the jobsite no matter how hard I worked went home to my wife and children. Everything was so much better when I saw their smiles and felt their hugs.
Package and warehouse work for me for over 16 years. Before that I worked in the restaurant industry. Hard work both times. While in college I worked on campus, did temp jobs and was in the Marine Corps Reserve. I can definitely relate to this song.
I heard it for the 1st time in the late 70's on the car radio over a decade after it hit the charts & loved every second of it! It was easy to figure out the title & I bought it ASAP as well!
I was 10-years-old when I heard this song on the radio back in 1965. I can still remember it so well like it was yesterday. Today's music cannot hold a candle to a song like this.
Back when this song came out I was a flat busted kid working construction welding steel up in the sky from 7 am until 5 pm. I think I was making about $2/ hr. I'd leave the job site a 5 and the local radio station played this song just about everyday at that time. I'd head to the ballpark and earn another $20/game catching for a semi-pro team. I couldn't get tired and lived life wide open because with the war looming in the near future, who knew how much future there would be. I had a long- haired girl waiting for me and we've been married 53 years now. Survived a lot since then. Raised our kids and now have six grandkids. I still haven't retired and I work everyday. I do get tired though!
Wow, you sure told quite a story in the few sentences you shared. I do hope you're able to retire and enjoy the fruits of your labor when you choose to!
Just three years later, 1968, I was a teenage combat soldier in the Vietnam War. For some reason that war locked my mind into music from those years. ... A great video and a great song. Thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate those that care about soldiers that were in combat. For some reason it took 2 months for your message to get to me, I have no clue why.
It could be my imagination, but it seemed to be more about talent and music quality then, than the focus on image & appearance which seemed to start with a trickle in the 1970s.
@@joefaller4525 I see what you're getting at, but one could make the argument that celebrities have always been concerned with their image, including but not limited to changing their names to make them sound less "ethnic," putting out that idea that everyone was happily married or at the very least heterosexual (going so far as to set up beards and sham marriages), that they were not only Anglo-Saxon protestants but also regular churchgoers, teetotalers, middle-class, average Joes, etc.; publicists and public relations people have been around for some time now. What they were trying to hide or emphasize has changed somewhat, although not altogether, and perhaps it is that starting in the 1970s they just began being less inconspicuous about it.
A 'Rust Belt' classic before we even knew we were living in the Rust Belt (Great Lake States). I was probably around 7 or 8 when this came out and I loved it then and always have, the tone , the beat, the rhythm, the vocals, it just audibly painted a steel gray smoky sky and the emotions that go with that.
I met these guys back in the 70's/80's. My boyfriend, at the time, was their equipment manager. Really nice, down to earth bunch of guys. Love their music.

My God. I REMEMBER seeing this video on television. In 1965, I was just 11 years old. I really liked their sound. When I shared the lyrics of the song with my dad, "They're gonna raise the time for the pay I get," he said, "They better get a better union."
Just saw the current lineup of this group a few days ago performing in the Happy Together tour with the Association, The Cowsills, Gary Puckett and the Turtles. Maybe not all the original guys but a great concert. I've had this song in my head for days now!
Music of this quality just doesn't exist anymore. Back in the day you'd have 30 people in the same studio. Brass section, string section session musicians which gave us this rich sound. Times have changed sadly.
I don't know. I try not to fall into the trope of "Back in my day ..." There is a lot of good music out there today, just as there was a lot of bad music back then. Good music is still out there and can be found, you just have to look for it. My two cents.
I remember back in the mid 90s I worked in this horrible warehouse as an order picker. This song came on the radio a few hours before quitting time on a Friday. Me and a couple other guys formed a line and started singing along while tossing boxes around. The foreman was PISSED. Came over and broke it up real fast.

"Tradin' my time for the pay I get

The only bad thing about this song is it's too short.
I just sing it more often to compensate for the brevity. Taught me how to Yodel.

Great song with a sound that can be described as The Four Seasons meets Petula Clark meets Gene Pitney!
1966 - what a tremendous year for rock & roll.
